“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21That powerful truth from Jesus captures the heart of FaithFi's mission and vision. If money issues are ultimately heart issues, then we need more than financial tips—we need a heart change that helps us see God as our ultimate treasure. Today, Taylor Standridge joins us to explore the deeper purpose behind FaithFi and how you can partner in that mission.Taylor Standridge is the Production Director of FaithFi: Faith & Finance and the co-author of Look At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and Anxiety. When Your Peace Rises and Falls with the MarketIt's pretty ironic that the stock market graph sometimes looks like a heart rate monitor. The point? Many people's emotions—and even their sense of hope—are tied to their financial situation. When the market dips, so does their peace. But Scripture offers a better way: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God” (Psalm 20:7).If your peace mirrors the market, it may be a spiritual warning light. Scripture calls us to set our minds on things above, not on the volatility of our savings accounts. Why Our Mission at FaithFi MattersAt the core of FaithFi is a calling to help people glorify God through wise financial decisions. But our vision shapes how we do it: to see every Christian view God as their ultimate treasure. In Jesus's words during the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 6:21 tells us, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Christian finance is about more than avoiding debt or giving to good causes. Those are great goals, but Jesus is calling us to something deeper: to reexamine what we treasure in the first place. It's not about giving more, it's about loving God more. That's why even the Pharisees, who gave plenty, were still rebuked—because their hearts weren't surrendered. When Christ becomes our greatest joy, giving becomes cheerful, not dutiful. The Daily Struggle: Trusting God or Trusting in WealthOne of the biggest struggles we see on the show frequently is the tension between trusting God and trusting in financial security. The culture says to get more and upgrade everything. But the gospel calls us to steward our resources for God's Kingdom. Ultimately, money can never define our worth—it can only serve as a tool when our identity is rooted in Christ.Wisdom Over Wealth: What Ecclesiastes Teaches UsThis book reminds us that wealth, possessions, and even success are fleeting. Apart from God, they're meaningless—just vapor, or ‘hevel' as Ecclesiastes puts it.But when we view money as a gift from God, not the goal, its purpose becomes clear. Ecclesiastes invites us to stop chasing what won't last and start investing in what will. That's why we're excited about the release of our latest study, Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on Money, authored by John Cortines. Ecclesiastes speaks so much to our modern struggles with wealth, showing us both the futility of placing our hopes in riches and the true path to a life grounded in God's wisdom. You'll find that this study will challenge you to rethink your relationship with money and inspire deeper trust in God's provision and sovereignty. To get your copy, you can either pre-order it at FaithFi.com/Shop or request a copy to be sent to you when you make a gift of $35 or more to the ministry of FaithFi at FaithFi.com/Give. Practical Tools for a Biblical Approach to FinancesFaithFi isn't just about biblical theory—it's about real-life application. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." - Isaiah 55:8-9You don't have to study Scripture long to realize that God's wisdom differs sharply from what the world considers wise. John Cortines joins us today to talk about the nature of wisdom, and spoiler alert— it's a Person, not a thing.John Cortines is the Director of Grantmaking at The Maclellan Foundation. He is the author of our new study on the book of Ecclesiastes, Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on Money, as well as the co-author of God and Money: How We Discovered True Riches at Harvard Business School and True Riches: What Jesus Really Said About Money and Your Heart. The True Nature of WisdomIn our modern world, we often equate wisdom with knowledge, education, and the ability to make good decisions. While these aspects are certainly part of it, Ecclesiastes teaches us that wisdom is far more than intellectual mastery or a collection of best practices. In fact, wisdom is not just a set of principles—it is a person. That person is Jesus Christ.Throughout Ecclesiastes, the Preacher (likely King Solomon) wrestles with the big questions of life: What is our purpose? Where can we find joy? How should we handle money? The book explores the various paths people take—seeking pleasure, accumulation, and status—but ultimately concludes that all these pursuits are vanity, or "chasing after the wind."The key takeaway? True wisdom is found in fearing God and keeping His commandments. But it's not merely about following rules—it's about cultivating a relationship with God through Christ.Ecclesiastes isn't just a book about the limitations of human wisdom; it points us to the deeper truth that wisdom is found in a relationship with God. Near the end of Ecclesiastes, we read that "the words of the wise are like goads," and these words come from "one shepherd."Interestingly, this shepherd's identity is made clear in the New Testament, where Jesus identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd in the Gospel of John. Not only does Jesus impart wisdom, but He is wisdom. In Colossians, we learn that Jesus is the one who orders and sustains all things—He embodies wisdom.Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 1:30 that Jesus became "to us wisdom from God, righteousness, and sanctification." This concept shifts our understanding of wisdom from a set of teachings to a relationship with a person.Ecclesiastes and the Limitations of Human WisdomEcclesiastes acknowledges the limits of human wisdom. Even Solomon, renowned for his wisdom, struggled to make sense of life's paradoxes. He sought knowledge, but it never gave him lasting meaning. In fact, knowledge alone cannot answer the deeper questions of life, such as suffering, uncertainty, or death.True wisdom isn't found in education or achievement; it's received from outside ourselves. Proverbs 9:10 states, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," and in the knowledge of the Holy One, there is insight. True wisdom is about trusting in Christ, who alone leads us into all truth and understanding.Walking in Wisdom with ChristIf wisdom is a person, the way to grow in wisdom is to walk closely with Jesus. John offers some practical ways to deepen our relationship with Christ and grow in wisdom:Spend time in God's Word: Not just for information but to encounter Christ and be transformed.Pray and seek His guidance: God promises to give wisdom to those who ask for it.Live in obedience: Wisdom isn't just knowing what is right; it's living it out.Surround yourself with wise counsel: Engage with fellow believers who are also walking with Christ.Trust God in times of uncertainty: Lean on Christ in suffering and hardship.Develop a heart of gratitude: Recognize and enjoy the simple gifts God gives us each day. These steps, though simple, shape our lives and our relationship with God. They allow us to grow in wisdom and understanding as we live in step with Christ. The Connection Between Wisdom and FinancesOne area where wisdom plays a critical role is in our financial lives. The way we handle money is closely tied to our spiritual journey, and the book of Ecclesiastes speaks directly to this. Money is often viewed in our culture as a means of fulfillment, but Ecclesiastes teaches us that wealth is a tool, not our source of meaning. In Ecclesiastes 11, we are reminded of the importance of generosity: "Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days." Giving reflects God's nature and His wisdom, and it produces Kingdom fruit. Generosity is a key part of living for Him.Ecclesiastes teaches us to appreciate the simple gifts God provides, while also reminding us that money and possessions are fleeting. As we apply the wisdom of Christ to our finances, we see the balance between frugality, generosity, and enjoying the blessings God has given us.The Ultimate Wisdom: JesusAt the heart of Ecclesiastes—and of all Scripture—is the call to fear God and keep His commandments. In the New Testament, we understand that this means following Jesus Christ, who is wisdom incarnate. Our pursuit of wisdom isn't about accumulating knowledge or living by a set of moral principles. It's about knowing Jesus personally and living in relationship with Him.If you're seeking wisdom, the answer is not found in more knowledge or better strategies—it's found in Jesus Christ. As we follow Him, we grow in wisdom, and our understanding of life's challenges—including money and possessions—becomes clearer. Wisdom is a person, and that person is Jesus. For those interested in diving deeper into the book of Ecclesiastes, our new study, Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on Money, offers a comprehensive exploration of this biblical text and its profound teachings on money, work, and contentment. It's often said that wisdom may create wealth, but wealth rarely creates wisdom. What's more valuable, wisdom or wealth? Before you answer, consider that wealth is fleeting, but wisdom is never lost. John Cortines joins us today to discuss why wisdom over wealth is always the right choice.John Cortines is the Director of Grantmaking at The Maclellan Foundation and previously served as the Chief Operations Officer at Generous Giving. He is the co-author of God and Money: How We Discovered True Riches at Harvard Business School and True Riches: What Jesus Really Said About Money and Your Heart.A Study in Ecclesiastes: Wisdom Over WealthFor the last year, John has been working on an in-depth study for FaithFi titled "Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on Money." The study is designed to help believers align their financial decisions with biblical principles. At the heart of the study is a profound truth: while wisdom and wealth are both valuable, only wisdom can preserve life.A Tale of Three Siblings: The Power of WisdomTo illustrate Ecclesiastes's message, John shares a real-life story that highlights the stark contrast between wisdom and wealth:Three siblings each inherited $1 million at age 18—a life-changing sum. Yet, their paths diverged dramatically:The first sibling followed a path similar to the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32), squandering their wealth and ending up in financial ruin. The second sibling made some wise decisions but ultimately spent beyond their means, leaving them with little to show for the inheritance. The third sibling sought wisdom, meeting with godly mentors and hiring a Christian financial advisor. They learned about generosity, investing, and stewardship. Today, they glorify God with their finances and have built a stable foundation for the future. This story powerfully illustrates that wisdom can generate wealth, but wealth rarely generates wisdom. Why Prioritizing Wisdom MattersEcclesiastes sheds light on this principle in Ecclesiastes 7:11-12:"Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits those who see the sun. Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: wisdom preserves those who have it."John shares three lessons from this passage that we can take from this:Wealth is useful, but it is temporary.Wisdom is lasting, offering protection, guidance, and life.Without wisdom, wealth can be destructive. While Scripture never condemns wealth, it warns us to prioritize wisdom above financial gain. Thanks to compound interest and investments, wealth tends to grow exponentially throughout life. However, wisdom doesn't grow automatically—it requires intentional effort. If wealth outpaces wisdom, it creates danger. But when wisdom leads, it preserves our life and financial well-being.This is especially critical during sudden wealth events, such as receiving an inheritance, a bonus, or selling a business. Without wisdom, wealth can disappear quickly. So, if wisdom is more valuable than wealth, how do we pursue it?Wisdom isn't just a set of principles—it's a person. 1 Corinthians 1:24 refers to Jesus as:"Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God."True wisdom begins with knowing Christ. It's about seeking Him through prayer, studying His Word, and surrounding yourself with godly counsel.Wisdom Before Wealth: A Message for ParentsFor those preparing to transfer wealth to the next generation, we must prioritize passing down wisdom first. The great wealth transfer is happening all around us, but money without wisdom can be destructive. Parents should talk about finances, generosity, and stewardship long before an inheritance is passed down. Here's how to transfer wisdom before wealth:Start financial conversations early, even with young children.Encourage responsible financial habits.Model biblical stewardship in your own life.Consider gradual giving instead of a lump sum inheritance. The worst approach is to write a will, wait until you pass away, and hope your kids figure it out. Open the conversation today. The Larger Message of Ecclesiastes: Jesus is Our Ultimate WisdomThroughout the book of Ecclesiastes, there are two major themes:The Shortness of Life—Ecclesiastes mentions death in 11 out of its 12 chapters. This isn't to bring fear but to remind us to live with urgency and purpose. Aligning Finances with Faith—Money is a tool, but it must be managed in light of God's eternal kingdom.Life is short. Let's honor God with our time, talents, and treasure. Wisdom is ultimately found in Jesus Christ. When we align our hearts with Him, our finances, decisions, and entire lives are transformed. Let's pursue wisdom over wealth, knowing that true riches are found in Christ. As you consider your finances, ask yourself:Am I pursuing wisdom as much as I pursue wealth?Am I making financial decisions based on biblical principles?Am I preparing my children and loved ones to handle money wisely?Money is temporary. Wisdom is eternal. Choose wisely.FaithFi's Newest Study: Wisdom Over WealthIf you'd like to dive deeper into FaithFi's new study, Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on Money is available for pre-order now at FaithFi.com/Shop. 6 Bad Investing Habits to Quit with Mark Biller

They say that winners never quit and quitters never win, but that's not really true, is it? What if you're trying to quit a bad habit? It's not only okay to quit a bad habit; it's something we should always strive to do—especially with investing. Mark Biller joins us today with a list of bad habits you should quit if you find yourself doing them.Mark Biller is Executive Editor and Senior Portfolio Manager at Sound Mind Investing, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. Go Ahead, Be a QuitterIn a recent article titled “Go Ahead, Be a Quitter” at SoundMindInvesting.com, six bad investing habits are discussed as they explain why quitting them can lead to better financial outcomes.1. Quit Standing on the SidelinesOne of the worst habits in investing is not starting at all. Time is crucial for building wealth, thanks to the power of compound interest—often referred to as the “8th wonder of the world.” Investing in well-managed, growing businesses, primarily through stocks, has historically provided returns that outpace inflation. So, instead of staying on the sidelines, become a part-owner of corporate America by investing.2. Quit Waiting for a “Low-Risk” Entry PointTrying to time the market is nearly impossible. Waiting for the “perfect” moment often means missing out on valuable time in the market. Over any five-year period, a diversified stock portfolio rarely loses money and frequently produces high returns. Consistency and patience, rather than timing, are the true keys to long-term growth.3. Quit Looking for a Reason to SellEvery financial expert seems to have a new doom-and-gloom prediction, but tuning into this noise can hurt long-term gains. Inflation—not market downturns—is often the biggest threat to wealth, and stocks are one of the best defenses against inflation. Instead of looking for reasons to sell, commit to investing long-term and avoid unnecessary panic.4. Quit Making Things ComplicatedAvoid drowning in economic forecasts, technical analyses, and frequent trades. Instead, pick solid investments and hold on to them. The simpler your approach, the easier it will be to stay the course.5. Quit Obsessing Over Short-Term ResultsChecking your portfolio daily can lead to emotional highs and lows, tempting you to trade based on short-term results rather than long-term goals. Instead, limit your portfolio checks to avoid unnecessary stress and stay focused on your broader financial objectives.6. Quit Worrying—Trust and Invest with PeaceInstead of letting fear drive your investment decisions, remember 2 Timothy 1:7: “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Trust in God's provision, follow His principles, and invest from a place of peace rather than anxiety. For more on these principles, check out his full article, “Go Ahead, Be a Quitter,” at SoundMindInvesting.org.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm considering withdrawing $20,000 to $30,000 from our $148,896 IRA to help purchase a new one-floor home for my husband. What are your thoughts on this, and what would the tax implications be?I need some money to keep safe and liquid, as the high-yield interest rates I've been getting are about to go down. I may need to use this money to buy my mom's house for my sister in the future. What would you recommend as a safe investment option that can still provide a decent yield while keeping the money accessible? My wife and I are looking to invest in a faith-based way, focusing on index funds and ETFs. Do you have any specific low-cost, faith-aligned recommendations we could consider for our investment portfolio?I want to share how reading the True Riches book has changed my husband's and my approach to finances as a church. At the most recent Kingdom Advisors Conference, John shared an incredible story about some friends of his and an inheritance decision they made:“I've got some friends who are a super sharp young couple in their 30s. His Father shared that he was about to give them a vast, multi-million-dollar inheritance. Amazing! But they had been reflecting carefully on money and faith for months. They said, ‘We are so grateful for this, but we're already OK. And if we got this money, we'd start to rely on the shifting sands of this money for our security, instead of the firm foundation of Christ.'Long story short, they worked with his Dad to use that money to advance God's Kingdom through giving. I was blown away by that decision.”Three Ways That Jesus Interacted With Wealthy PeopleSo, if we go through the four Gospels and find the times Jesus interacted with a wealthy person, it happened a lot. He had a pretty unique pattern, and it was three things:LoveInvitationChallengeSo for us, in our wealth today, Jesus loves us, invites us, and challenges us.  Jesus said You can't serve God and money. Money promises us Pleasure, Possessions, Protection, and Position, but it can't give us those things. We have to look for God to get them eternally and in truth. Is Jesus challenging us to sell our possessions and give everything to the poor? While he might ask us to do that, this is the only time Jesus tells anyone to sell it all in Scripture.Zacchaeus gave away half of his wealth, Peter left his boats, and Nicodemus, after the crucifixion, spent a fortune on the burial spices for Jesus, gaoing public with his faith. The beauty is that it will look different for each of us as we read Scripture carefully and listen for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. But we can be sure God will challenge us to mobilize our wealth in this world to bless people and to bring Him glory. How can we use our wealth to honor God and bless others? We want to invite them into a deeper, right relationship with God and others. There are four areas where we can do this:Family: Caring for those we are responsible for is godly and right.Generosity: Scripture is clear we're called to invest money into God's Kingdom work.Hospitality: In today's isolated culture, opening your home and sharing meals with people is a radical and good step.Employment (if you own a business): God calls many of us to employ others in good jobs in healthy, God-honoring work environments. When we use our wealth for the benefit of others, it makes us richer spiritually. God is with us in that. How can people can learn more about biblical generosity? There's a great ministry that works closely with Kingdom Advisors. It's called Generous Giving, and its video stories of Christian givers could greatly encourage anyone. Going to GenerousGiving.org, you can find dozens of sermons, stories, and resources to encourage you.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm retired and have a 401(k) from a previous employer from about 15 years ago. Should I take that 401(k) and move it into an IRA to have more control over it?I have about $50,000 with Vanguard in an IRA account and another $20,000 in a 401(k). Up until about three years ago, I made good money with Vanguard in my IRA account, but in the last three years, I've gone nowhere with my investments in a targeted retirement account. I would gain a little bit and lose a little, and that's all it would do. So I put it all into a money market account, but I wanted to know if you had any suggestions, like what type of account I could put it into to start making some gains.I have a Social Security Question for my sister who turned 60 in December. Her husband passed away about eight years ago, but she's still working full-time. Can she collect on her husband's Social Security in whole or part where she's still working? My husband passed in 2016 and at the time, we had an 18-year-old and a 25-year-old. A couple of years ago, before everything went crazy during the pandemic, I was able to refinance my house to get a lower rate. My house has a rate of 3.75%, and at the time, I thought I was helping my children by putting their names on the deed during the refi. However, I've been hearing a lot about capital gains taxes, what will happen to them, in the event of my passing, and if the house is evaluated at more than what we paid for. I just don't want to put them in a situation where they will owe a lot of money. Was I wrong for doing that? If so, can I reverse it with little or no problem simply by paying to have it reversed?Resources Mentioned:True Riches: What Jesus Really Said About Money and Your Heart by John Cortines and Gregory BaumerGod and Money: How We Discovered True Riches at Harvard Business School by John Cortines and Gregory BaumerGenerousGiving.orgSound Mind InvestingRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. In this episode, Jeff, Jeff, and Greg discuss: What he learned about God and Money at Harvard Business School. Utilizing our successes for God's purposes. Where to find your true value. Anchoring transparency around money in gratitude and celebration.   Key Takeaways: There are 2350 verses about money in the Bible. Everything we have truly belongs to God. This is a point of divergence between practice and belief. “How much do I get to keep?” is a more accurate question than “How much do I need?” because God is a generous God and wants to bless us with more than we know. Giving is a joyful act of worship, not a rulebook or rote formula. It is an opportunity to recognize God's character as lavishly generous and reflect that character back to Him.  "One of the biggest benefits of this financial finish line is that it does allow us to give more, and that's great, but more so it protects our heart from the damage that happens over multi-decades being surrounded by our culture's worship of Mammon." —  Greg Baumer About Greg Baumer: Greg Baumer is co-author of the books God and Money: How We Discovered True Riches at Harvard Business School and True Riches: What Jesus Really Said About Money and Your Heart. Greg and his co-author John Cortines are passionate about helping individuals and families experience more wholehearted life in Christ by better understanding the generosity of God and His invitation for us to live generously. Mark and Sharon Taylor own a successful real estate company in Florida. However, halfway through their career, God gave them a wake up call that completely changed their priorities. Since that time, Mark and Sharon have become passionate about the advancement of the gospel around the world and using the wealth and success God has given them to fuel that mission.  Not only has God dramatically changed their focus and trajectory, but He has challenged their children too. Mark and Sharon frequently involve their kids in their business ventures and giving decisions and have learned a lot along the way. More recently, Mark and Sharon have been walking through the process of giving away a large property that they own. They worked with the National Christian Foundation to navigate their complex gift and broke down what the process looks like from the inside.  Mark and Sharon had plenty to say on topics like being generous with a fluctuating income, handling windfalls, thoughts on legacy and inheritance, giving as a family, and making complex gifts of property and appreciated assets. Listen now to hear all they had to share! For this episode, we're taking a break from our typical interviews to cover a number of questions that have come in to the podcast. We're lucky enough to be joined by repeat guest John Cortines to help us explore some of these ideas. John is the Director of Generosity for the Maclellan Foundation and past Chief Operating Officer of Generous Giving. He is also coauthor of the books God and Money and True Riches, along with another of our past guests, Greg Baumer. If you want to hear John's full story, you can find it back on episode 13. The questions we covered in this episode are:  [6:45] I live in an expensive part of the country. How would you account for this in setting a financial finish line? [16:56] If I set a finish line, how do I account for things like inflation, growing family, kids getting older (and more expensive), etc? [25:19] I recently received a large inheritance, although I am already in a decent financial position with a mortgage but no other debt. How would you handle that situation with a finish line in place? [33:47] God has really stretched me in giving out of my income, and that process has been very rewarding. My husband and I want to start giving out of our savings too. Do you have any advice? [38:36] Do you think that everyone should have a finish line? If you have a question of your own, there are a number of ways you can jump into the conversation. First, you can join our facebook group to find other likeminded people discussing all aspects of generosity and impactful giving. You can also check out the Finish Line Forum. If you'd prefer to send in your questions directly, you can reach us via our contract page.  QUOTES TO REMEMBER “There's nothing right or wrong about living in a high cost area.” “This is a matter of walking the adventure with the Lord, seeing what he's called us to, and yeah, sometimes making tradeoffs.” “Your finish line will need some continuous tweaking. It's not meant to be set in stone for the rest of your life.”  “What are those dollars doing in an investment account that you don't need versus what could those dollars do if they were injected into the kingdom?” “There's a real pride in thinking you can out-invest God.” “I can figure out how much is enough income, but how much is enough security?” “Nobody stumbles into enough.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW God and Mammon by Andy Crouch at the Faith Driven Investor's Conference Larry Burkett's list of the 2300 Bible verses on money The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Forum BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Acts 5:1-6 | Ananias and Sapphira But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and with his wife's knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.” 5 When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. 6 The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him. WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Scripture records that women were among the first supporters of Jesus' ministry. Let's look at the beginning passage of the Parable of the Sower in Luke 8. It reads: After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means. From Mary Magdalene, a first patron of the early church, to Lydia, an industrious entrepreneur who strategically funded early missions women historically have been generous wealth creators and stewards. Year after year, research conducted for the Women's Philanthropy Institute (WPI) reveals that households headed by women at all levels of income and wealth are more likely to give. More than 7000 women of faith participated in the research, which provided the following insights: KEY INSIGHTS FROM STUDY OF RELIGION RESEARCH ●Christian Women are Generous with Their Time and Money: They are 300% more generous than the average population with their money and 400% more generous with their time. ●Discipleship Plays the Major Role in Shaping Generosity Among Christian Women. Research revealed that women with a strong understanding of Biblical teaching on stewardship gave higher percentages of their income away. ●94% of women we surveyed wanted to give more than they currently give. ●There are 3 common challenges that hindered women's desire to give more: ○the lack of financial planning ○the lack of clarity of their purpose/passion for giving ○and lack of accountability partners ●The study also revealed the most women felt they could give more and that they desired to give more. ●Women with a Strong Sense of Calling/Purpose Are More Generous Than Those Without.Women with the highest score on personal sense of calling gave on average 13.7 percent of their income to charity while women with the lowest scores on this scale gave 9 percent on average. Now, let's define what a giving passion is. It's a need that we care about so deeply that we are willing to sacrifice to address it. ●While purpose is permanent, passions often change over time and season of life ●As our relationship with God grows deeper, our passions align more with God's passions ●We learn what God is passionate about as we read the Bible ●Authors Greg Baumer and John Cortines in their book True Riches, say it this way Throughout Scripture, God reveals three top priorities three big things He's up to in the world. He invites us to help with each of these, and we get to join our eternal dad in doing his work. As we take on these tasks, God grows our capacity to love, breaking us free from indifference. ●Understanding what God cares about certainly gives us better direction for our areas of passion ●These three big things from scripture are: ○serving the poor, ○saving the lost ○strengthening believers QUESTIONS TO HELP IGNITE PASSIONS Answering these questions may help women (and men) ignite their passions: ●What would I do if I knew I could not fail? ●My friends would say my soapbox is ●What brings me to tears breaks my heart pierces my soul? ●I always dreamed I would impact the world by ... LISTENER QUESTIONS On today's program, Rob also answers listener questions: ●Where should you give your tithe if you're between churches? ●What can you do to improve your credit score? ●When is it wise to refinance a mortgage? I am so excited about today's episode! Today, Will and I are going to be sharing about how we are debt-free again, as we just paid off our house! If you followed us for a while, you know, we are passionate about financial stewardship and financial freedom, and you also might know that we paid off our first mortgage when we were just 25 and 26 years old. And today we will be telling you a little bit about our journey and how we went back into debt for the house we live in now and how we were able to pay that house off this year. Our hope more than anything is that you would be inspired and know that with some hard work and intentional planning, this could be possible for you, too. Greg Baumer, a graduate of Harvard business school, has had a successful career as Chief Growth Officer of a healthcare startup called naviHealth. In his early career, he focused on the high life, going to expensive dinners and vacations with his wife, Alison. However, a class at Harvard called God and Money flipped upside-down his view of money. Always a faithful tither, his question changed from "How much do I need to give" to "How much do I need to keep?". He is co-author of the book God and Money, along with previous podcast guest John Cortines. He has a deep wealth of experience on financial finish lines and speaks around the country on the finish line concept and generosity. Listen now to hear his story! QUOTES TO REMEMBER "We were dutifully paying our 10% tithe, but there was no worship in it. It was not a way for us to interact with God, it was more like the cost of admission we paid God every week so that we could spend the other 90%." "Everything that we have truly belongs to God." "It is so helpful to have done the work in advance around the finish line concept, because then when the money comes, it is relatively straightforward to allocate it across the categories of giving, spending, and saving." "Generosity is not a choice that we make one time, but rather a choice that we make daily in gratitude to Christ for his generosity towards us." "The wrestling with the Holy Spirit, with your spouse, in the counsel of other wise Christians, is in fact the point." In this episode, we have the chance to talk to John Cortines, coauthor of the books God and Money as well as True Riches: What Jesus Really Said About Money and Your Heart. He currently serves as Director of Generosity at The Maclellan Foundation and has also served as the Chief Operations Officer of Generous Giving, a nonprofit dedicated to opening the conversation about generosity. He shares his story starting with a six figure salary out of college on the fast track to early retirement before radically changing his perspective on wealth and faith during his time at Harvard Business School. He and his coauthor Greg Baumer have written and spoken widely about the idea of a financial finish line, and we had many questions for John about the subject. QUOTES TO REMEMBER "Generosity is actually a mechanism for getting closer to God, and it brings joy, and it brings freedom, and it opens up a whole new avenue to purpose in life." "We had come into a study of God and money to ask, 'How much so we really need to give?, but God flipped our perspective to, 'How much do we need to keep?'" "Rather than saying 'What do I want to give money to?', say 'What does God's Word direct me to?'. And then, in the process of giving to that, to actually cry out to God and say, 'God, I don't have your heart, but I believe you can shape mine and make it more like yours.'" Kealan and Cody break down the question, “How do I choose a finish line for my spending?”. A majority of the time, when someone's income goes up, their spending goes up some degree as well. But when we really think about the idea that everything that we have belongs to God, we realize that there is only so much that we need for ourselves and our families. A finish line is the maximum amount we need to support ourselves and our families each month. If God blesses us with any income beyond our finish line, we set it aside to give away as God leads us. There are a number of practical considerations when choosing a finish line, and the guys break each of these down one by one. NOTE: The Finish Line Pledge was formerly known as Aspiring to the Median. All references to Aspiring to the Median and to www.aspiringtothemedian.com are interchangeable with the Finish Line Pledge and www.finishlinepledge.com. The former IMPACT program has since evolved into Finish Line SPRINTs.  QUOTES TO REMEMBER: “If you think back through the Bible narrative, even back to Genesis 1, God creating everything from nothing, it seems obvious that everything belongs to God, but that's often not how we intrinsically think about our finances.” “There's an intense physical ownership that we feel when it comes to our money.” “When we see ourselves as a manager of something that belongs to God, the question starts to change from ‘How much do I owe back to God' to ‘How much of God's wealth should I be taking for myself?'” “Money and wealth are very powerful, and there are two sides to that coin” “One thing that is clear is that our wealth on this earth certainly will not follow us to Heaven” “You never see a hearse followed by a uHaul” LINKS FROM THE SHOW God and Money by John Cortines and Greg Baumer The IMPACT program BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Ecclesiastes 5:12 | No Satisfaction in Money Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep. 1 Timothy 6:9-10 | Money is a Root of All Kinds of Evil 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. 1 Timothy 6:18-19 | Don't Put Hope in Wealth 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. Matthew 6:19-21 | Where Your Treasure Is, Your Heart Is 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 25:35-40 | What You Did for the Least of These 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.' One of the biggest factors in our lives is not talked about enough, and that's money. Isn't it weird how money is kind of secretive like that? I don't know. Money affects so many aspects of our lives: it affects our work, the need for money often keeps us trapped in our jobs, motivated to work harder and smarter. Money opens doors in our work and allows us to try new things, or the lack of it takes a physical toll on our bodies and our emotions. When we're stressed out about money, it manifests physically causing us to lose sleep and worry. It's kind of a big deal. Money also affects our play. Thankfully playing is free 99, you don't really need to spend any money to have some quality fun, hallelujah for that. I remember making mud pies as a kid in my backyard and that was fun, but we do have to save up to go to Disney World or if you want a season pass to the museum, you have to buy it, and you also have to take time off of work to take extended time to play, which is incredibly important to do. So there are some financial factors that do affect our play. So I want to have some more conversations here about money because it's important and I just want you to know, I am always open to hearing from you. What do you want me to share when it comes to money or in this podcast in general? Seriously, email or find me on social media and tell me, I really would love to know, which is why I made this episode because one of the questions I get asked all the time is, Hey, how are you doing in your Dave Ramsey journey? Many verses in the Bible talk about money, and for some, the teachings can be conflicting. On one hand it says it's the root of all evil; but it also talks about ways to use your money to a blessing to others. Money is also  discussed in the Bible as there's a direct correlation between the way we handle our money and our faith. When it comes to money, we will either worship wealth or worship with our wealth. These conflicting ideas led two young Harvard MBA graduates explore the intersection of faith and money.  John Cortines and Gregory Baumer, through their book, “God And Money: How We Discovered True Riches At Harvard Business School”, tell their story of God's transforming power and how it changed their lives and their relationship with money. Now from their second book, “True Riches: What Jesus Really Said About Money and Your Heart”, we have the honor of co-author Greg Baumer here to share with our listeners his journey towards wealth and stewardship.

Thoughts from this episode: A faithful reading of scripture leads not to the question, “How much should I give?”, rather, it leads to the question, “How much do I need to keep?”. If God brings more, it's not to increase our standard of living, but rather increase our standard of giving. Tell stories of radical generosity. Generosity that soothes the soul and heals the body is generosity that is integrated into one's lifestyle, material to the giver, and joyfully done from an attitude of abundance. If you can't trust the church with your money, why are you comfortable trusting them with your salvation? But what if we're missing the bigger picture when it comes to generosity? What if it's not about money at all? But he didn’t give much thought to the intersection of faith and money until 2014 when, in the rather unlikely setting of Harvard Business School, he began a searching exploration of these spiritual questions. John believes that God calls Christians to a far more radical task than building wealth. He calls them to give abundantly, and to lay aside their tendencies to become spenders or savers. In this episode, the guys explore the story of two Harvard Business School graduates who were confronted with a biblical view of money that changed their lives. In the first part of the episode (01:12-09:51), Tim and Jon talk about what the Bible says about money. On one hand it says it’s the root of all evil––kind of intense. But on the other hand it also talks about ways to use your money to bless others. How does the Bible ask us to view money? In the next part of the episode (10:08-22:15), Jon talks to John Cortines and Gregory Baumer. John and Gregory were two young, successful Christians making more money than most of us can dream of. They were faithful Christians tithing to their church regularly, but when they took an elective class at Harvard Divinity school about God and money, everything changed for them. In the next part of the episode (22:42-37:26), John and Gregory talk about how God completely flipped the way they think about money on its head. For a project in their class, they sent out an anonymous survey asking how much people make, save, and give. The project took on a life of its own, and they were left with some startling results and convictions. In the final part of this episode (37:58-1:02:40), we get to see how John and Gregory walked out their newfound convictions. They acted in faith and trusted God with their money in an extreme way. Their obedience wasn’t always easy, but when they trusted God beyond just cutting a ten percent tithe check every month, they experienced true joy and freedom.
