Katharin spent the first 25 years of her career owning and operating Medi-Spas and Clinics in Canada, USA, South America, and Europe, with a subspecialty in advanced foot care. Always dedicated to education, training, and mentorship, in 2000 Katharin launched the North American School of Podology (NASP), offering a range of educational services to promote best practices, policies and standards for the pedicurist and foot care specialist. In 2007 Katharin recognized the need to increase the awareness and importance of healthy feet due to lifestyle changes and founded Footlogix, the world's first and only Pediceutical foot care line, with the simple philosophy to elevate the pedicure industry and provide professionals around the world with the means to give an exceptional foot care experience. Wir reden zu wenig über China, das muss man ja auch mal sagen. Gut, dass Journalistin und Fernost-Expertin Katharin Tai uns zu einem Picknick besucht hat. Als Science-Fiction-Film, der eigentlich keiner ist, haben wir uns 2046 angesehen und liegen diesmal nicht so sehr im Klinsch wie in der letzten Episode. Dafür schlagen wir einen großen Bogen vom Film über China, noch mehr China, Linearmedien zur Ein-China-Politik. Gregor sagt, diese Einleitung war etwas holprig, aber das passe ja zum Start-up-Thema und ich hätte noch schreiben sollen, dass wir das bereits vor Weihnachten aufgenommen haben. Für Folge 23 hat mich Katharin Tai zum zweiten Mal besucht. Sie war bereits in Folge 8 zu Gast. Damals kündigte sie an, im Rahmen ihres Studiums europäisch-asiatischer Beziehungen für ein knappes Jahr nach China zu gehen. Nun ist sie zurück - Anlass für ein neues Gespräch. Seit der letzten Folge hat Katharin zunehmend die Laufbahn als Journalistin eingeschlagen, berichtet über Asien im NZZ-Blog »Das Teehaus« und ihrem Podcast »Fernostwärts«. Wir sprechen über Debattierclubs, chinesische Kritik an Demokratie, staatlich gewünschter Harmonie, (Selbst-)Zensur, WeChat, Essen und ihre Pläne in Oxford.

Wir waren beide im Nordosten Chinas: Nils beim Eisfestival in Harbin und Katharin an der nordkoreanischen Grenze.

Wir hatten eine längere Pause eingelegt, weil wir beide viel unterwegs waren. Katharin erzählt nun erstmal von ihren Reisen im Februar 2015, die sie zuerst in die tibetischen Regionen Chinas geführt haben.

Fernostwärts VICE-Style, unser neues Format – live, vor Ort und in Farbe – schickte Katharin nach Hong Kong, um sich hautnah ein Bild von #OccupyHK zu machen. Hier schildert sie nun ihre Eindrücke. Am 18. November 2014 wurde zwar ein kleiner Teil der Barrikaden am Rand des Hauptcamps in Admiralty geräumt, diese Folge ist aber trotzdem noch aktuell, da ein Großteil des Camps weiterhin steht.

Katharin hatte dieses Jahr ein Seminar über Tibet und erzählt Nils davon – es gibt einen kleinen historischen Rückgriff, danach geht es hauptsächlich um die Entstehung des aktuellen Konflikts zwischen der VR China und Tibet.

Auf der sprichwörtlich letzten Kölner CCC-Mini-Konferenz SIGINT2014-04-25 15.03.21 habe ich Katharin Tai (@Whitey_chan) kennengelernt. Katharin schreibt unter anderem für die taz und ZEIT Online über Netzpolitik und nordostasiatische Kultur und Politik und studiert in Frankreich europäisch-asiatische Beziehungen mit Schwerpunkt Internationales Recht. Wir reden über Cosplay, Demokratie in China, Leben in Shanghai, das Simultan-Übersetzen von Vorträgen (zum Beispiel dem Glen-Greenwald-Talk auf dem 30C3) und ein unverschämt leckeres Bananen-Brot.

Fast ein Jahr verbrachte Katharin in China. Lernte dabei selbst Chinesisch und unterrichtete Deutsch. Von ihrer Schule in Shanghai aus unternahm sie viele Reise unteranderem in die Gansu-Provinz in Zentralchina und nach Taiwan. Katharins Blog mit Reisebrichten findet ihr hier.
