Today, Kelsee tells us how to make the most of our workouts as women and she answers her most frequently asked questions like: How do we reduce our chances of injury? Should we rest our injuries or work through the pain? How quickly do we decondition if we take a break from training? What role does diet play? And what about rest? From her own experience as an athlete--running ultra-marathons and 50-mile races--and as a top-notch trainer who has worked with the best, Kelsee offers important insights and tips for training for optimal performance and health. "I'm addicted to social media. I love it and I hate it." "Making friends as an adult is so damn hard." These are some of the most common issues that I listen to from my therapy couch, as the majority of folks I serve are between the ages of 22-40. My conclusion is that what we deeply desire as a generation is: INTIMACY. Not the hot and heavy, sexual intimacy, but a sacred closeness with other humans. with FRIENDS. We're not sure how to make new friends or sustain the existing connections we do have. And social media isn't helping like we hoped it would. In this episode I'm bringing a new spin to the conversation around social media and adult friendships, offering some guidance based on my experience and ideas I've changed my mind about, and shedding some light on the difference between "vulnerable" sharing online versus true intimacy IRL. So you scheduled your first therapy appointment and you want to know what comes next. OR You're on the fence about therapy, because you aren't sure what will happen in the sessions. Is the therapist going to make you talk about your childhood and analyze your dreams while you're laying on a couch? The process can vary a little from therapist-to-therapist, depending on modalities being used, what issues have brought you to therapy or your therapist's personality, but I want to tell you exactly what will GENERALLY happen if you sign up for therapy with me, from the moment you reach out to schedule, to the very last session we have together, and everything in between. In this episode I'm gonna tell you what questions I ask on my intake form, how long therapy might take, what happens if you regress in your progress, and even what you're paying for behind the scenes beyond the 50 minutes that we are together. Today we are looking at a more sustainable approach to becoming your best self. This episode weaves together some practical strategies with contrarian concepts regarding the ideas of commitment and personal change. Learn: How to commit to a vision rather than getting lost in the commitment to tasks. To build habits upon habits, 2 at a time. To maintain healthy habits even when life throws a curveball. How to tap into the "wise-mind" in order to stop bad habits. Why "WHY" isn't that important for initiating change. A better way to use sticky-notes for habit formation. What is a spectrum of improvement and what makes it so effective. And remember that you still deserve to enjoy your life in the present, before you've actualized all your goals. ------------------- If you are a resident of Indiana and are interested in hiring Kelsee as your therapist (virtually or in person in Indy) visit her website: www.hemlockcounselingservices.com To connect further with Kelsee, find her on instagram @kelseekeitel and @evergreenthinkingpod or visit the show's website: evergreenthinkingpod.com ---------- Thanks to LMNT for keeping us hydrated and on our a-game, in the office and on the bike. I see a lot of well-intended attempts at boundary setting. And it makes me proud! Setting boundaries is tough, and for many of us recovering people-pleasers, it is even harder. But there a crucial key that MOST folks are missing in their boundary setting: consequences. By missing this step, it is nearly impossible to enforce a boundary. In this quick and practical episode, I'm going to walk you through my 3-step, gold-standard formula for communicating a boundary in a way that is easy to establish and even easier to enforce. We'll pay special attention to the missing key- consequences, and get you set up this holiday season to use boundaries with confidence, whether thats with family and loved ones, or in the workplace. Welcome back for another live mental health sprint coaching session! This is one of my most popular coaching offerings and we are letting you listen in as a fly on the wall! In todays session you'll meet Lauren Kasinger who is an independent, thirty-something, experiencing some big life transitions including making some career and education shifts. Lauren and I were high school classmates (and dance team and colorguard teammates actually!) but Lauren now lives in Florida, where she is a single mom, military veteran (thank you Lo!!!!), former body-building figure competitor, and all around one of the kindest people you'll meet. Lauren's episode is a prime example of what it looks like to work with me in more of a maintenance mode. She has been doing a TON of personal development and growth work, and at this stage, I really get to affirm and encourage her that she is still on the right path towards greatness. You'll notice that through my questioning and comments, most of the wisdom here comes FROM Lauren TO Lauren. I am basically her professional hype woman (my favorite role to play in people's lives). Some of the very relatable themes that we'll discuss include: what to do when your community changes, or when people close to you don't approve of all of your decisions, how to lean into your own interests and resist people pleasing, and how to navigate being a content independent single woman amongst a community and culture that insists we need a partner to be complete. This episode is minimally edited, per usual, so that you can really get a feel for the cadence and real human stuttering and real-time contemplating that we'll both experience as we work together. --- To hire Kelsee as your mental health coach, nationwide, visit www.hemlockcoachingservices.com or connect with her on Instagram. Clichés are clichés for a reason. They stick. And while I wouldn't consider these topics necessarily cliché, when I notice a recurrence of something, I take note. These are the 5 conversations I have weekly (sometimes even daily!!) in my practice as a licensed therapist. I hope that in sharing these conversations, you will feel a combination of validation, encouragement, challenge to edification, and an understanding that (if these topics resonate with you) these are COMMON and you are not alone in your experiences. Like i said...weekly, sometimes daily!!! The Conversation topics include: Urgency as the Enemy Mind-Reading is NOT a superpower Ignorance Truly is Bliss, but Insight is Power. Its Not All About You (and that's a good thing) Body-First-Regulation BONUS: Fidget For Life. In addition to these topics, this episode includes fun little life updates, my mountain bike trip to SLC, and a triathlon training update: how my first Olympic distance went, my new plan for training moving forward, how I'm taking my own medicine. As mentioned in this episode, I was recently a guest on The Average Climber Podcast (another Plugtone Collective show) to discuss mental health as it relates to rock climbing and outdoor athletics in general. It has been well over a year since we've had a guest on the show, and there is no better way to invite someone back in than for a live mental health sprint coaching session! This is one of my most popular coaching offerings and we are letting you sit as a fly on the wall! In todays session you'll meet Sarah Gardner who is a small, service-based business owner in Indiana. Sarah's business is called Immersive Sound Experiences, where sarah offers sound bathing, which is a passive meditation practice that utilizes beautiful sounds from chimes and singing bowls to help participants ease into a calm state, literally shifting your brain waves and activating the parasympathetic nervous system. While Sarah and I have discussed business many times before as peers, this was our first time doing coaching together. You'll notice through laughter that Sarah and I already have some rapport! Sarah came in with some creativity blocks and uncertainty about how to make her business financially sustainable. She was also experiencing some mindset blocks such as perfectionism, being hard on herself, and some icky feelings about selling a service due to a dissonance between wanting to sell a valuable service, while also having a social-justice heart for making this modality accessible. Something that came to light was some of the assets that sarah has but hasn't been utilizing to their full potential and some deeper insights as to why that might be. My goal with Sarah was to ask questions that would spark some of that creativity back, empower her to be innovative and explore new angles of her biz, and uplift/encourage her that she has more resources and capability than she might feel right now, and to help challenge some of her mindsets around selling. One of my core coaching philosophies is that every individual has exactly the resources they need within themselves, if given the right support to uncover it. Consider me, the excavator of your potential. I think this episode will be relatable to many people- ESPECIALLY if you are listening and are business-minded or are a helping professional. OR if you are curious about what a coaching session might feel like. Adaptability is essential for evolution and survival. In early development, we adapt out of necessity. As we age, though, adaptability becomes a choice. Until...that is...the choice is made for you. We can adapt on our own terms or we will be forced to adapt. This is a major theme of business-ownership, but also life, and Kelsee is exploring it on the podcast today. She will also be carefully sharing about an adverse experience she is currently navigating, what she is learning about relaxation, how she is caring well for yourself right now, and how she discerns when/what to share about her life, as she explores the theme: vulnerability and why she doesn't use that word to describe herself, contrary to popular assumption. This isn't your typical deconstruction of faith story. Kelsee wasn't raised particularly religious. Faith in the Christian god was something she leaned deeply into and eventually out of on her own. Around 2018, at about the age of 24, Kelsee left Christianity. Heavily involved in the evangelical church, and a ministry leader, this was a major life transition that would be the catalyst for many other transformations in Kelsee's life. While this is a part of her story that she shares openly, this is the first time she shares the whole story in detail publicly. This episode is raw and unscripted, with the intent of sharing the before, during, and after of one person's religious deconstruction. Kelsee hopes that by hearing her story, listeners will know that they aren't alone in their deep questions of faith, and gain a few tips on how to navigate this kind of transition. Although Kelsee no longer identifies with the christian religion, her intent is not to change anyone's mind, rather it is to give them permission to explore what feels true and authentic to themself and pursue a life of meaning. As she says in this episode: Just like your physical health is YOUR physical health, and your mental health is YOUR mental health...Your spiritual health is YOUR spiritual health. Extra Miles with Kelsee Keitel is a bonus, solo segment of Switchback: An Outdoor Community Podcast. In these segments, I'll be sharing more specifically about mental health- the bio-psycho-social issues that impact our daily lives, from my perspective as a humanistic mental health professional. My goal, like with the regular episodes, is to encourage you, challenge you to think deep, and reflect on your experiences. This episode is an introduction to Inner-Child Work and an example of Inner-Child Healing in my own life! I'm sure you've heard of this concept on a podcast, TikTok, or from your favorite Instagram Therapist. Maybe you're into it or maybe you're skeptical! Wherever you are, I wanted to provide a simple introduction to what Inner Child Work is all about and how to incorporate this work into your everyday life- no therapist required. I've experienced many forms of this work in my life, but the most recent example has come through my history of riding bikes. Get ready for some embarrassing, never-before-shared stories from throughout my childhood and early adulthood. I hope you'll see through this example that inner child work doesn't *have* to be clinical and serious. And you don't have to have a history of trauma to benefit from this work. Inner Child Work can be organic, fun, and highly intuitive. In this episode I refer to my 33 journaling prompt download, which you can access by Subscribing To My Newsletter . You can learn more about journaling in general by listening to This Episode. My goal, like with the regular episodes, is to encourage you, challenge you to think deep, and reflect on your experiences. We're starting this one off with a little recap of my recent trip to Colorado. Then we're talking all things Journaling! I'm sure you've been recommended by at least one person in your life (an influencer, a friend, family member, colleague, or even a therapist like me) to give journaling a try. As I've been chatting with folks and reflecting on my own journey, I'm realizing that there is often a lot of barriers to entry (or to sustainability) when it comes to establishing a journaling practice. And I think that many of these barriers are a result of having a skewed idea of what journaling is "supposed" to look like. In this episode we're breaking down these specific barriers, and completely dismantling the image of journaling that many of us have in our minds, and providing practical solutions to the hurdles that we experience with this helpful exercise. And if you experience any kind of ADHD symptoms, I'm sending some special love to you this week :) And to get the juices flowing, I'm providing you with a totally free but super valuable list of 33 of my favorite journaling prompts/exercises along with a recap of the anti-rules for journaling that we cover in this episode. Extra Miles with Kelsee Keitel is a bonus segment of Switchback: An Outdoor Community Podcast. In these shorter segments, I'll be sharing a lot more about mental health- the bio, psycho-social issues that impact our daily lives, from my perspective as a mental health professional. My goal, like with the regular episodes, is to encourage you, challenge you to think deep, and reflect on your experiences. On a recent poll on my instagram, someone asked me how to be less critical. I loved that question, and I wanted to share my response, and elaborate on that idea. So….how can you be less critical? My answer to criticism is to put curiosity before judgement. This works for self-criticism, as well as being overcritical of others. Tune in to learn more about how to actually apply this concept to your life.
