The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 2: While speaking at a campaign event in Ohio over the weekend, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump predicted that there would be an economic “bloodbath” for the automotive manufacturing industry if he didn't win the 2024 presidential election in November. Democrats and dishonest members of the media took the statement out of context—instead suggesting that Trump had openly called for a “bloodbath”, or a massacre, should he lose. A selectively trimmed nine-second clip was reposted by numerous social media accounts belonging to members of the political left, including: Biden-Harris HQ and Joe Scarborough (who quickly deleted his post). The strategically edited audio inaccurately makes it appear as though Trump is calling for violence. On Monday, morning shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC all promoted the fake narrative as well. While appearing on Fox News with Jesse Watters, independent journalist Michael Shellenberger warned that progressives, as well as members of the media, have focused on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's “bloodbath” comments as an excuse to censor Trump and his supporters—labeling them collectively as a “violent threat to democracy.” In a new “opinion video” for The New York Times, journalists Adam Westbrook and Lindsay Crouse attempted to debunk the idea that the deep state is a threat to American civil liberties—and they did so by traveling to Huntsville, Alabama? The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (03/19/2024): 3:05pm- On Tuesday, the Supreme Court decided to temporarily permit Texas's Senate Bill 4 to take effect. The bill makes it a crime for migrants to illegally enter the United States—allowing for Texas officials to arrest and/or deport anyone who recently entered the state unlawfully. Adam Liptak of The New York Times writes: “The Supreme Court temporarily sided with Texas on Tuesday in its increasingly bitter fight with the Biden administration over immigration policy, allowing an expansive state law to go into effect that makes it a crime for migrants to enter Texas without authorization. As is typical when the court acts on emergency applications, its order gave no reasons. But Justice Amy Coney Barrett, joined by Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, filed a concurring opinion that seemed to express the majority's bottom line. They were returning the case to an appeals court for a prompt ruling on whether the law should be paused while an appeal moves forward, Justice Barrett wrote. ‘If a decision does not issue soon,' she wrote, ‘the applicants may return to this court.' The three liberal members of the court—Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor—dissented.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/19/us/supreme-court-texas-immigration.html 3:30pm- What is Texas State Bill 4? Maria Mendez of The Texas Tribune writes that the “law would make it a state crime to cross the Texas-Mexico border between ports of entry. If a police officer has probable cause to believe a person illegally crossed the Rio Grande, that person could be charged with a Class B misdemeanor, which carries a punishment of up to six months in jail. For subsequent offenses, the person could be charged with a second-degree felony and face up to 20 years in prison. If the migrant is convicted and has served their sentence, a judge would be required to order police to transport them to a port of entry. A judge could drop the charges if a migrant agrees to return to Mexico, and police could turn over migrant families to Border Patrol agents to avoid separating children from their parents instead of arresting them.” You can read Menendez's full report here: https://www.texastribune.org/2024/03/18/texas-sb-4-immigration-arrest-law/ 3:40pm- Craig Rucker—President of The Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT)—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a lawsuit his organization, alongside The Heartland Institute, recently filed against the Biden Administration “seeking to overturn their approval of Dominion Energy's plans to start construction of a massive offshore wind project off Virginia that ignores the obvious harm of the endangered North Atlantic right whale. The project consists of the 176 giant wind turbines—each tower taller than the Washington Monument, with turbine blades longer than a football field—to be constructed in the open ocean 25 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. If completed, the project would be the largest of its kind in the world. This Dominion Energy project is one of many offshore wind projects mandated by an executive order issued by President Biden, declaring that a ‘climate crisis' exists that ‘threatens mankind's existence.'” You can read The Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow's (CFACT) full statement here: https://www.cfact.org/2024/03/18/coalition-sues-to-block-virginia-offshore-wind-project-to-protect-the-right-whale/ 4:05pm- While speaking at a campaign event in Ohio over the weekend, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump predicted that there would be an economic “bloodbath” for the automotive manufacturing industry if he didn't win the 2024 presidential election in November. Last year Disney announced a new director for its Star Wars film franchise—Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Obaid-Chinoy has won two Academy Awards for short-films examining injustice in Pakistan, but does that make her the ideal selection for a sci-fi franchise? Obaid-Chinoy said that her goal as a filmmaker has been to “make men uncomfortable,” but aren't most Star Wars fans just looking for an enjoyable two-hour movie? Is Disney destroying the Star Wars franchise?

The Equalizers

The Equalizer Season 2 Episode 17: Solo Aired on CBS: February 18, 1987 Directed by: Alan Metzger Written by : Carleton Eastlake Featuring: Lindsay Crouse, Kevin Spacey, Austin Pendleton We get it. A lot of us aren't really in the mood to watch Kevin Spacey in anything. And if you are, it'll probably be to watch some classic 90s movie, or to hate watch K-PAX. So instead of writing about him (though he does give a top level EQ villain performance), we'll focus on the romantic sparks flying between Robert McCall and guest Lindsay Crouse, much more complex than the typical damsel in distress. Good plot, good characters. Sure it had an inevitable action scene in an abandoned warehouse, but even the warehouse was better than average, some top tier catwalks. The Equalizer came out of their epic two parter with guns (and grenades) a blazing. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com

It's Quitting Season with Lindsay Crouse“When the system doesn't historically stand for you, why sacrifice yourself to uphold it?” Today's guest, Lindsay Crouse, is as close as it gets to a “quitting expert” in her role as writer and producer at The New York Times, and in this episode, we're talking about some key things she's learned and observed through her award-winning coverage. When female athletes at the top of their game like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka start saying no, what larger truth does that indicate, and what does it mean for the rest of us? What is the sunk cost fallacy, and how does it make us justify staying in situations we want to leave? What happens when you become a martyr to grit? Why do we celebrate endurance, especially as women, when quitting can actually be self-protection? The intro ends, and the interview begins, at 00:16:15.About Lindsay Crouse:Lindsay Crouse is a writer and producer in the Opinion section of The New York Times. Drawing on her own experiences as a competitive marathoner, she has spearheaded coverage of women athletes at The Times; the Emmy-nominated video series she produced in 2019, Equal Play, broke news by centering female athletes' untold experiences and led to widespread reform in women's sports. Now the Co-Executive Producer of Op-Docs, The Times's series of short documentaries by independent filmmakers, she has produced more than 300 films, winning four Emmy awards (15 nominations), five Oscar nominations, and two Peabody awards—including the 2022 Oscar nominee “The Queen of Basketball.” She is the author of the forthcoming book“The Case for Quitting.”Support us:Quitted is listener-supported, made possible by us and by you; you can support this podcast by joining our Patreon community at patreon.com/quittedMusic: Michael Blumenfeld, mikebloomstudio.comSound engineering + edits: Adam Day, https://www.adamdayphotography.com/Producer: Cathleen KisichHost: Holly Whitaker, https://hollywhitaker.substack.com/Host: Emily McDowell, https://emilyonlife.com Become a Quitted supporter on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The demands society places on women—the choices they make about their lives, their relationships, and their appearance—can be overwhelming.  Lindsay Crouse exposes those expectations to the bright light of day and forces all of us to consider our own roles in them. Crouse is a film producer and senior editor at The New York Times.  A Rhode Island native, she graduated from Harvard University, where she competed in both track and field and cross-country sports events.  She helped produce the 2017 documentary 4.1 Miles, which won an award at the 2017 Peabody awards.  Crouse first wrote about the female athletes who wanted to become mothers and faced pressure to continue competing and training that would jeopardize their health and pregnancy outcomes in October 2014.  In May 2019, she reported on Nike's lack of maternity support for the female athletes it sponsors.  She produced a video interview and wrote an op-ed, about distance runner Mary Cain, entitled “I Was the Fastest Girl in America, Until I Joined Nike,” which was critical of both Nike and its chief coach, Alberto Salazar, for the grueling training methods and negative culture that profoundly affected Cain's mental and physical health.  Following the publication of the article, Salazar was permanently suspended from participating in track and field events by the U.S. Center for SafeSport, a nonprofit that protect athletes from sexual, physical and emotional abuse.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A cornerstone of this podcast is the power of sport to catalyze personal and societal change, cultivate confidence, and ultimately transform lives. But what happens when sport breaks you?If you've listened to my conversations with Lindsay Crouse and Lauren Fleshman, you know this story is all too familiar within athletic institutions—particularly Nike. Today's guest is busting this paradigm.Meet Mary Cain.Established as the fastest girl in a generation by the time she reached high school, Mary was only 16 when she qualified for the Olympic Trials. At 17, she became the youngest American track and field athlete to make a world championship, competing in Moscow in the 1500 meters.Olympic glory seemed a foregone conclusion. Until that is, she joined Nike's elite Oregon Project team run by infamous coach Alberto Salazar. And that's when everything changed.Under severe pressure from Salazar and others to lose weight, her mental and physical health began to crumble. Ultimately, her body collapsed—and her running career behind it. Then she just disappeared.Until November of 2019 that is, when Mary broke her silence on what happened and why, bravely exposing the abusive system that derailed her in a New York Times Video OpEd entitled, “I Was the Fastest Girl in America, Until I joined Nike”.Here's the thing about Mary: she's emerged from this whole experience stronger—both as an athlete and as an advocate resolute on creating positive change for the next generation of female athletes. Now 25, she continues to run while serving as the New York Community Manager for the running apparel brand Tracksmith. In addition, this podcast announces her new role as CEO of Atalanta, a new NYC-based elite running team & community non-profit Mary founded with the dual mission of promoting running community, inclusivity & diversity, while also rewriting the rule book on professional women's athletics.Today we get into all of it.To read more click here. Jake Tuber is a part-time graduate school professor, a former college teammate of mine, and the creative force behind the Endeavorun Running Retreat. He is a sprinter turned distance runner with a story about how his first real injury caused a downward spiral amid the pandemic. Jake doesn't claim to have the answers or enlightened moments where the truth was revealed. He struggled through the many things that life threw at him and came out on the other end. He's here today to share some of the raw moments along his journey. Our conversation has some great takeaways that I think all runners can benefit from: Action before thoughts - actions help to model your inner beliefs but you have to take the first step Community - being around people who will support you (such as our Team Strength Running) Environment - surrounding yourself with an optimistic and encouraging space to guide you on the right path Enjoy the full episode below and if you come away eager to sign up for the Endeavorun Running Retreat, use code 'strengthrunning' to save $100 on your registration. A big thanks to Elemental Labs for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I’m drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It’s tasty and delicious and I find that I’m not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn’t eating enough sodium. There’s now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you’re worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. They just released their first new flavor of 2021, their most requested flavor, watermelon salt. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor and get your hydration optimized.

What happens when you have two very big but different dreams vying for your focus? Do you choose one? Or do you risk it all to pursue both? This was the dilemma faced by today’s guest—a woman who knows a thing or two about what it takes to execute at the highest level.Meet Alexi Pappas—Olympic athlete. Award-winning writer. Filmmaker. And so much more.An extraordinary runner, Alexi set the Greek national record in the 10,000-meters and competed for Greece at the 2016 Olympic Games. An equally noteworthy artist, her words have graced the pages of The New York Times, Runner’s World, Women’s Running Magazine, Sports Illustrated, The Atlantic, and Outside. Not enough? In the exact same year she competed in the Olympics, she also co-wrote, co-directed, and starred alongside Rachel Dratch in Tracktown, her first feature film. Executing on just one of these goals is an exceptional accomplishment. Doing both in parallel is downright superhuman.More recently, Alexi co-wrote and starred alongside Nick Kroll in Olympic Dreams, the first non-documentary-style movie to ever be filmed at the actual Olympic Games.Profiled in every major publication from Sports Illustrated to Rolling Stone, my interest was recently piqued by an amazing New York Times OpDoc (produced by friend of the pod Lindsay Crouse), which poignantly portrays the emotional toll of chasing an Olympic dream. In her excellent new memoir Bravey, Alexi dives deeper. An exuberant and unflinching primer on the struggle of self-actualization, it’s the beautiful story of surviving trauma and navigating disparate dreams—filmmaking and athletics—in competition for her attention. Why she refused to pick just one lane. And how, setbacks and deep lows aside, Alexi ultimately succeeds at both. How is possible that this human is so good at so many things simultaneously? And what is the cost (if any) of setting the bar so high?I needed to know more. This is a conversation about the courage required to blaze your own path. It’s about self-belief. And it’s about setting audacious goals and how to work towards them. It’s also about depression, loss and sacrifice. It’s about the intersection of athletics and art. And how to prioritize synergy over balance. But more than anything, this is about what Alexi calls being bravey. In Alexi’s case, trauma helped fuel her success. But it was in healing that trauma that she learned to thrive—and find the joy in the journey. The visually inclined can watch our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. This one’s for all the Braveys and soon-to-become Braveys seeking to replace can’t with maybe.Alexi is my new favorite person. Lindsay Crouse: Structural Change Is Needed For Gender Equality In Sports - R4R 192

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 26, 2020 64:01

The declaration of Independence for the United States of America was formally declared on July 2, 1776, and signed on July 4, 1776.  However, it was not for another 144 years that Congress passed the 19thAmendment and ratified it, granting women the right to vote.  It was not until nearly 70 years ago when the United Nations declared that women’s rights are fundamental human rights, and that women should have the right to live free from violence, slavery, discrimination, to be educated, to own property, to vote, and to earn a fair and equal wage.  This issue is not isolated to one country, but is a worldwide problem. Women have been fighting a war for years to obtain the same rights which are granted to men.  One powerful voice that is advocating for these females, specifically female athletes, is Lindsay Crouse.  Lindsay is a journalist for the New York Times, an editor, producer, and competitive amateur marathon runner that is utilizing her position as a tool to bring inequality to the forefronts of our minds. Issues Facing Female Athletes There are multiple issues facing female athletes that are in plain sight of the general public that we should be concerned about.  These issues include but are not limited to pregnancy, bullying, emotional abuse, and pay equality.  Lindsay worked with top tier female runners over the course of a year to help tell their story and bring to light issues that may not be considered illegal, but that should be seen as unethical. Female athletes have lost money, sponsorship and some even their career, simply because of gender inequality.  In a series of opinion articles written for the New York Times, Lindsay highlighted some of these incredible athletes and the struggles they faced while running and competing for large sponsors. Mary Cain was one of the fastest women of our generation, and the youngest American track and field athlete to make a World Championship.  After signing with Nike’s Oregon Project she was beaten down by the win-at-all-cost culture and was forced to lose more and more weight until her body eventually broke down and she became damaged goods. Allyson Felix, a USA Olympian who won nine Olympic medals in track, was arguably one of Nike’s most marketed female athletes.  Allyson, along with two of her Nike teammates, Alysia Montano and Kara Goucher, had dreams of being great runners and mothers.  However, becoming pregnant and having children caused them to experience pay cuts and risk losing their contracts, simply for wanting to have children. Lindsay, and several brave female athletes helped bring these issues to the forefront of our minds and due to their courage, many top tier sponsors have made changes to their contracts proving these female athletes with guaranteed payments while they for the year and a half surrounding their pregnancies.  Without these valiant women being willing to share their stores, future female athletes would be dealing with the same issues for many years to come. Permission to Rebrand Yourself We are living in an exciting time for women’s sports and American women should thrilled about what is happening right now.  The elite and sub-elite women are running well and are giving strength and courage to women everywhere.  These women are not just athletes but have other important roles in their lives such as mothers and full time jobs.  Women all over the world can relate and identify with these athletes and should be empowered by them. For Lindsay, she continues to get older but has not let that limit her abilities as a runner.  As she is getting older, she is becoming faster than she ever thought she could be.  But as she continues to accomplish what she believed to be impossible she has realized that no one should be able to brand you.  You have permission to rebrand yourself and be what others don’t think you can be.  You don’t need permission from anybody but yourself to go out and accomplish amazing goals.  One person, giving permission in their own life to rebrand themselves, is enough to potentially inspire everyone else in their own lives. Creating Opportunities for Women If you want something to change, don’t wait for the system to accommodate you.  Make whatever system you are in work for you.  There will always be disadvantages, but you can turn those into advantages if you look for it.  Many women are accomplishing fantastic things in the workplace, but this is not enough. Think about why you want to do something, and if why you want to do it is really important to you, go get it!  Once you’ve got it, find ways to fix it for other people.  You may not always be able to change the system but find different ways to bring other women with you. Women always are made to feel as though they are competing for positions.  It seems like there are a limited number of slots for women in the workplace, whereas men don’t typically feel as though they have to compete for positions.  But remember, if you put the work in, you can get there.  You can do whatever you want to do as long as you’ve prepared yourself.  And when the opportunity presents itself, the time and effort you’ve put into it will be obvious.  It is not a matter of being perfect, but of being brave.  Change your mindset and be the change that you want to see! While we have come a long way, we still have a long way to go.  This is a battle that is being fought every day.  We have two choices: act like it doesn’t exist and do nothing or find ways to get involved.  This is not about women being greater than men, but about women being equal to men.  There are incredible female athletes working hard every day to get their chance to shine.  It is up to each and every one of us to make sure these incredible people are given every opportunity to succeed, to eliminate the stigma, and to perpetuate the cause. She talks about her decision to retire from professional running in 2019, about why coaching was her next dream, and her third cookbook with co-author Elyse Kopecky, and about the pressure women often feel to "do it all."   Thank you to AfterShokz for sponsoring this episode of the Ali on the Run Show! CLICK HERE for 15% off wireless headphones.   What you’ll get on this episode: What’s making Shalane happy right now? Episode #49: Lindsay Crouse, Journalist for the NY Times

In this episode, we dig into the story behind the stories as Shanna and Kara interview NY Times journalist Lindsay Crouse. In 2019, Lindsay helped break two of the biggest stories of the year, one with Alysia Montano and Allyson Felix on maternity rights for athletes and the other with Mary Cain on her abuse while training with Alberto Salazar at the Nike Oregon Project. Both stories drove critical conversations and paved the path for change in the areas of #dreammaternity and #fixgirlssports. Interestingly, breaking these stories is not Lindsay's main job at the NY Times, and at least one of these stories took nearly 6 years to tell.  In this episode, Shanna and Kara dig into Lindsay's circuitous journey to live her dream in working for the NY Times, while pursuing a parallel dream to qualify for the Olympic Trials in the marathon. Lindsay talks about her childhood aspirations to attend Harvard even though no one from her town in Rhode Island ever had. She discusses her early running career and how she ultimately earned a spot at Harvard to both run and study for her future in journalism. The path to the NY Times was far from straightforward, however, as Lindsay moved to New York City and had several other jobs before landing her NY Times opportunity. Even then, she had to rely on her own entrepreneurial spirit and instincts to find and tell these important stories, including an initial off-the-record conversation in 2014 with Shanna and Kara on her treatment by Nike during pregnancy.  Finally, Lindsay shares the painstaking and thoughtful work required to verify facts, confirm information from sources, frame the conversation, and ultimately to tell the stories in a way that will resonate with readers in order to provoke much-needed conversations. The work isn't easy, but Lindsay does it well and with integrity. We can't thank her enough for simply giving athletes a platform to tell the truth and to use their voices to drive change in our sport.

Lindsay Crouse is the Senior Staff Editor and OpDocs Producer at The New York Times. In 2016, two weeks before the U.S. Olympic Team Marathon Trials in Los Angeles, Lindsay asked 'New York Times Sports' to send her to Los Angeles to cover the race. She took a vacation day to do it and credits this trip with helping her to shape a career covering women's sports. Four years later, Lindsay is breaking some of the biggest stories in the industry and helping to change the landscape for women in sport. Among some of her most popular pieces is her Equal Play video documentary series that exposes the injustices in women’s running that are the product of a structure of gender inequality in sport. A graduate of Harvard University, Lindsay is also an incredible athlete, herself. She ran cross country and track in college and then moved to New York where she started working at the 'New York Times' as an assistant secretary. Lindsay has run thirteen marathons and recently set a new personal record at the California International Marathon, December 2019 where she ran 2:53. This is an inspiring conversation about working hard, leveling the playing field, and taking accountability for your own journey, in running and in life. Providing women an equal position in sports is a conversation that goes well beyond athletics. It is a conversation that is happening across industries and spurring real and sustainable change. We are grateful to be part of the conversation. Thank you for speaking with us Lindsay, and thank you for the work that you do.

A Senior Staff Editor and OpDocs producer at The New York Times, Lindsay Crouse's most-read and watched work includes: How the 'Shalane Flanagan' Effect Works I Am 35 and Running Faster Than I Ever Thought Possible Nike Told Me to Dream Crazy, Until I Wanted a Baby I Was the Fastest Girl in America, Until I Joined Nike (browse all of her work here) Lindsay is one of the foremost voices for women in running, helping us better understand structural inequities that lead to gender inequality and power disparities in the sport. After earning a history degree from Harvard University while competing in track and field and cross country, Lindsay moved to New York City and worked in a variety of editing and journalism awards before finally landing at The New York Times. As a senior producer of OpDocs, she's produced memorable videos about the marathoner Memo and Walk, Run, Cha Cha (which earned a nomination for an Academy Award). Lindsay is at the forefront of current affairs in the running world, highlighting how power is often unjustly wielded by the powerful against those with very little of it. But she's not just a running journalist - she's a runner! And quite a fast one at that... just this past fall, she raced 2:53 at CIM, scoring a sub-3 marathon and improving on her PR by a massive 6 minutes. In this conversation, Lindsay and I discuss her work, its real-world impact on the running community, and what draws her to these stories. We also talk about: The changing culture of distance running Why representation matters, particularly for female athletes How we shortchange women runners through coaching and science Whether being a runner has helped her break these huge stories Why so many runners consider quitting (but shouldn't) Lindsay Crouse is someone to watch in the world of running. As a near-Olympic Trials Qualifier working for the "newspaper of record," breaking the biggest stories in running, she's an exciting figure in the industry. “We can all connect over food and the love of the outdoors.”Iliana ReganLast week we explored the intersection of art and endurance with Rickey Gates. The week prior we broke barriers in women's sports with Lauren Fleshman and Lindsay Crouse.Today we go deeper on both themes. Not through the lens of running, film or journalism. Our vehicle for this occasion is food and literature.Meet Iliana Regan. The Rickey Gates of cuisine, think Lauren Fleshman with a knife.Much like Rickey, today's guest is also that rare human blessed with talents that span multiple disciplines. And like both Lauren and Lindsay, her success required the fortitude to stand up for herself in an industry dominated by men.A self-taught chef and author, Iliana has faced and overcome a litany of obstacles from substance abuse to sexual discrimination, ultimately prevailing to experience a special moment right now -- celebrated for both her culinary and literary accomplishments. At 15 Iliana landed her first restaurant gig washing dishes and never looked back. Leaning on the rustic experiences of her Midwestern upbringing (she was making mushroom tea long before Four Sigmatic was a thing), Iliana pioneered a unique locavore style of cooking dubbed 'new gatherer', plied daily at her Chicago restaurant Elizabeth -- notable for its homestead aesthetic, emphasis on foraged foods and deep connection to the natural surroundings. It's an approach that landed her a coveted Michelin star six years in a row. Jeff Gordinier, food and drinks editor for Esquire magazine (and former podcast guest), included Elizabeth on his recent list of the last decade’s 40 most important restaurants. Noma's René Redzepi, arguably the world's greatest chef, counts himself a fan. And David Chang dubs Iliana one of the best chefs he has ever known. This past summer Iliana published Burn The Place. A singular, powerfully expressive debut memoir, her story is raw like that first bite of wild onion, alive with startling imagery, and told with uncommon emotional power. The New York Times describes the book as, “perhaps the definitive Midwestern drunken-lesbian food memoir.” The New Yorker echoes this sentiment, calling it "brutal and luminous"; and “a thrilling, disquieting memoir of addiction and coming of age.” Oh yeah, it's also the first food book to be long-listed for the National Book Award since Julia Child in 1980.Now 10 years sober, Iliana’s passion has made an unlikely turn. Focused not in the predictable direction of building a culinary empire, her sights are instead set on a remote corner of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Deep in the Hiawatha National Forest, Iliana, alongside her wife Anna and three dogs, has converted a cabin on 150 acres into Milkweed Inn -- a bed and breakfast where she serves up her trademark 'new gatherer' cuisine to small groups of just 10 people over weekends between May and October.Today Iliana shares her story. It's a deeply personal conversation about her love of food, foraging and the great outdoors. It’s about identity and sexual politics. How a little girl who longed to be a boy navigated childhood growing up gay in an intolerant community. It’s about alcoholism and what comes with it. The usual stuff. Like running away from cops in handcuffs. Having sex in bar bathrooms. And using car keys to bump cocaine. And it's about sobriety. How Iliana ultimately transformed into a phenom of knife and pen. Celebrated for both her literary and culinary talents. And a woman who has made an indelible mark as a pioneer of ‘new gatherer’ cuisine in an industry dominated by men.As an aside, I implore all of you to read Kim Severson's recent and fantastic New York Times profile on Iliana entitled, After Culinary and Literary Acclaim, She’s Moving to the Woods.Final note of gratitude to Jeff Gordinier for introducing me to Iliana. “If we really care about the future of girls in sports, we need to invest in the girls that are actually playing these sports.”Lindsay CrouseA perfect companion piece to my recent conversation with Lauren Fleshman -- and in furtherance of better understanding the issues that swirl around gender, sport and fairness -- today I sit down with an investigative journalist breaking some of the biggest stories in women's sports.Meet Lindsay Crouse.A graduate of Harvard University, where she competed in both cross country and track and field, Lindsay is a senior staff editor and senior OpDocs producer at The New York Times. If you’ve been paying any attention to running news (or just big headlines in general) then you are already familiar with Lindsay’s work. At the epicenter of the conversation that surrounds sports and power, Lindsay is behind some of the biggest sports stories and opinion pieces in recent memory, with a particular focus on the role and state of women's distance running. Some of Lindsay's most popular pieces include How The 'Shalane Flanagan Effect' Works, which examined the former podcast guest and New York City Marathon victor's elevating impact on other women; she broke the story on Nike's refusal to guarantee female athletes' salaries during or immediately post-pregnancy; and she produced the piece in which Allyson Felix told her story around Nike and pregnancy.Lindsay also worked with last week’s guest Lauren Fleshman on her powerful November Op-Ed, I Changed My Body For My Sport. No Girl Should and is responsible for the bombshell opinion piece about the emotional abuse suffered by Mary Cain under her former coach, Alberto Salazar. I Was The Fastest Girl in America, Until I Joined Nike created such a stir, it went on to become the 42nd most read New York Times piece for all of 2019.In her role as a senior producer of OpDocs, Lindsay's many credits include the wonderful film about minimalist marathoner Memo and Walk, Run, Cha Cha, which was recently lauded with an Academy Awards nomination in the documentary short subject category. In addition, Lindsay is an accomplished athlete in her own right. With 12 marathons under her belt, she recently posted an impressive 2:53 26.2 PR -- a feat accomplished (subsequent to our conversation) while balancing the tremendous rigors of her demanding career.I first came across Lindsay by way of her recurring cameos in my friend (and RRP guest from episodes 73, 144, & 174) Casey Neistat's wildly popular vlog. So in 2015, I began following Lindsay's career. As I watched her work mature and profile grow, I eagerly awaited each new article -- and anticipated an opportunity to share her experience and insight on the podcast.Today is that day. And it's everything I hoped it would be. We begin with Lindsay's personal trajectory from Rhode Island roots and attending Harvard to landing a job at the most prestigious newspaper in the world. We discuss maternity rights and the gender wage gap by going behind the scenes on Nike' relationship with pregnant athletes. The controversies surrounding Alberto Salazar and the Nike Oregon Project. The personal stories shared by Mary Cain, Lara Goucher, Alysia Montaño and Allyson Felix. And gymnast Katelyn Ohashi's campaign to secure fair pay for NCAA athletes. We explore the ways in which the sports industry has failed to make way for women. Why almost all current sports science is based on men. And why conventional coaching has led to a sordid history of harming female athletes. In addition, Lindsay recounts what it's actually like to work at The New York Times in our post-truth, 'fake news' world. The unique pressures that accompany breaking big stories. And how she manages to balance everything -- and still kick serious ass in running. The ongoing impact of Lindsay's journalism is immeasurable. So it was an absolute honor and a delight to sit down with her.Note: Because this conversation transpired at the New York Times offices (as opposed to my studio), we did not film the conversation. In addition, it was recorded in mid-October and thus not current with the immediate news cycle.I can't say enough good things about Lindsay and the work she is doing to advance the role and voice of women in sports. I love this conversation. I sincerely hope you do as well.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & Subscribe Apple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsCalm: The #1 app for meditation and sleep with 100+ guided meditations covering anxiety, focus, stress, sleep, relationships and more. You may not know Lindsay Crouse by name. But, you've likely seen her work scrolling your social media feeds.Lindsay is a journalist for The New York Times whose specialty is producing video op-eds and op-docs. Her most recent work has 7 million views and counting. It's headline: "I was the fastest girl in the world, until I joined Nike."It features Mary Cain, a former child running prodigy who used her video to tell a story of physical and mental abuse by the famed Nike Coach Alberto Salazar. Cain's raw account of her time training with the Nike Oregon Project included public weight shaming and encouragement to diet to the point of losing her period and broken bones due to bone deterioration. Salazar is currently facing a four-year ban on doping. Nike has, at the time this episode published, supported him. So have some of his top athletes.  But other Salazar athletes, including Olympians Kara Goucher and Amy Yoder-Begley, have backed Cain's claims of abuse under Salazar's leadership and Nike's oversight. On this Dying to Ask, how Crouse created her unusual niche and pioneered a new way of storytelling at the New York Times.  We break down how she puts op-docs and op-eds together. And, we explore the impact those those viral videos are having on the national conversation of what it means to win at all costs.

"One thing that has been really amazing about reporting on this industry is that I actually am really inspired by it and get really motivated by it and I'm just so motivated by all the amazing women that are balancing running with jobs and also families. I think every single woman that's qualifying for the Olympic Marathon Trials right now, and all the women behind them too—sometimes it just comes down to talent, it's not about work, and I totally respect that—what the women are doing right now specifically is amazing and I think I've kind of been like, ‘If they can do this, I can too.' It's very tiring and I can always stop. I think that's important to remember and that's what I tell myself when I start to get really tired, ‘I don't have to do this, remember why I'm doing it, it's because I want to.' And I think that's enough to keep me going." I had a great conversation with Lindsay Crouse, who is a producer, editor, and writer at The New York Times—and a pretty damn fast marathoner in her own right—for this week's episode of the podcast. If you've been paying any attention to running news the past couple years, or just big headlines in general, you are definitely familiar with Lindsay's work. Some of her most popular pieces include The Shalane Effect, which she wrote about Shalane Flanagan and the elevating effect she's had on other women; she broke the piece about how Nike does not guarantee female athletes a salary during their pregnancies or immediately after giving birth; she produced the piece in which Allyson Felix told her story around Nike and pregnancy; and, most recently, she was responsible for the Mary Cain op-ed speaking out about the abuse she suffered under her former coach, Alberto Salazar. We recorded this episode a couple weeks ago before the New York City Marathon, so the Mary Cain piece hadn't dropped yet, but we got into plenty of other good stuff, including Lindsay's own trajectory as both a writer and runner, the biggest takeaways from her reporting that she has applied to her own training, how her experience as a competitive athlete informs her perspective as a journalist, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by PATH Projects. PATH makes running shorts with 3 or 4 zip pockets so you can carry your phone, keys, gels, ID—whatever you need!—without things bouncing around when you run. HELEN WHITNEY, WRITER, DIRECTOR, PRODUCEREmmy and Peabody award-winning, film producer, director and writer Helen Whitney has been a prolific creator of documentaries and feature films. Her compelling subject matter has included topics such as youth gangs, presidential candidates, the McCarthy era, mental illness, Pope John Paul II, Great Britain’s class structure, homosexuality and photographer Richard Avedon. Among the actors she has worked with: Lindsay Crouse, Austin Pendleton, David Strathairn, Brenda Fricker, Teresa Wright, Estelle Parsons.Throughout her career, she has maintained a deep interest in spiritual journeys, which she first explored with her documentary The Monastery, a 90-minute ABC special, about the oldest Trappist community in the Americas. Whitney followed this film with a three-hour Frontline documentary for PBS, John Paul II: The Millennial Pope, and in 2007 she produced The Mormons, a four-hour PBS series that explored the richness, complexities and controversies surrounding the Mormon faith. Following the Sept. 11 attacks, she produced Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero, a two-hour documentary that examined how religious belief – and unbelief – of Americans was challenged and altered by the spiritual aftershocks of 9/11. The film has been repeated numerous times since it first aired in 2002, and it was a PBS featured presentation on the 1st and on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. One of Whitney’s recent works examines the power, limitations, and in rare cases, the dangers of forgiveness through emblematic stories ranging from personal betrayal to genocide. This film involved shooting throughout America, and such countries as South Africa, Germany, Rawanda, The three-hour series, Forgiveness: A time to Love and a Time to Hate, aired on PBS in 2011 and it also inspired Whitney to write a book of the same title, with a forward written by the Dalai Lama. The filmmaker has also received an Academy Award nomination, the Humanitas Prize, Emmys, two DuPont-Columbia Journalism Awards and many other recognitions for her work. She is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and has presented her films and lectured at universities, museums and churches around the country (including Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Brigham Young, Stanford, the National Cathedral, the Corcoran Gallery, the Minneapolis Art Institute). Into the Night: Portraits of Life and Death, a two-hour feature documentary, features fascinating, unexpected voices from various walks of life: old and young, believers and nonbelievers, the dying and the healthy, well known and obscure. Among them: Caitlin Doughty, an alternative mortician and bestselling author with her own YouTube following; Adam Frank, an astrophysicist and NPR commentator, Gabriel Byrne, renowned actor of stage and screen; Jim Crace, award-winning novelist and environmentalist; Max More, a cryonicist and futurist; Stephen Cave, a British philosopher; Phyllis Tickle, a near-death experience spokesperson and religious historian; Pastor Vernal Harris, a Baptist minister and advocate for hospice care in African-American communities; Jeffrey Piehler, a Mayo Clinic heart surgeon. However varied their backgrounds, all are unified by their uncommon eloquence and intelligence, and most important by their dramatic experience of death. Each of them has been shocked into an awareness of mortality–and they are forever changed. For them death is no longer an abstraction, far away in the future. Whether through a dire prognosis, the imminence of their own death, the loss of a loved one, a sudden epiphany, or a temperament born to question, these are people who have truly ‘awakened’ to their own mortality.Into the Night creates a safe smart place that allows people to talk about a subject of universal importance. It is the conversation we yearn to have, but too often turn away from in fear and distress. Yet our culture is at a critical turning point, driven in part by the baby boomer generation that is insisting on a new openness and on this deeper conversation. Our film speaks to this emerging movement with a novel approach meant to provoke searching conversations, both private and public.Ultimately the film is meant to raise questions, not to provide answers. How could it? Death is “that undiscovered country,” as Hamlet so famously described it, “from whose bourn/No traveler returns.”https://www.intothenightdoc.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
