A Word With You

My phone's been blowing up for a week or more. Mostly not good news. Lots of storms. Lots of sadness. Severe thunderstorm alerts, tornado and flood watches and warnings. Stacked up in my texts like planes waiting to land at O'Hare. Like much of the country, it's been a "Groundhog Day" cycle of one stormy day after another. I miss the sun. But that's just been the backdrop for days of accumulating grief. I often get "breaking news" on my phone. This week it's been mostly heartbreaking news. One of my family members, suddenly crushed by the tragic loss of a third brother. The painful death of a coworker's dad - and a dark diagnosis for the father of another. A lifetime friend living the final days of his beloved wife's battle with dementia. Other friends, faced with brutal decisions on behalf of declining parents. And yesterday's medical emergency for a dear friend who's expecting a baby - she went from ER to ambulance to surgery. Yes, it's been a season of storms and sadness. But it's also almost Easter. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Easter 2025 - So Much Hurt, So Much Hope." And, oh, what a difference that "Easter" makes! Not the holiday. The Man! We all have seasons of compounding loss and grief. Storms that won't stop. Dark clouds that keep obscuring the sun. Times when hope seems swamped by hurt. But the Bible puts an amazing word in front of hope - and that word has the power to change every dark moment we face. In our word for today from the Word of God in 1 Peter 1:3-6 - it's talking about suffering "grief in all kinds of trials." But then it reveals the divine antidote to despair: "In His great mercy, God has given us a new birth into a" - here's that word - "living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." Not sympathy card hope or "positive thoughts" hope. Not hope, the idea or the wish. This is hope, the Person! The One who, as testified to by six historians, 12 disciples and hundreds of eyewitnesses, literally walked out of His grave on Easter morning! In short, Jesus is alive! He's present. Powerful - having conquered the one force that has stopped every other person who has ever lived. As the sadnesses and grievings mounted these past few days, I felt increasingly powerless to be of much help. But since the day I put my trust in Jesus' death for my sins, I have the Living Hope Man to turn to. As I did on that shattering spring day my Karen - my love since I was 19 - was suddenly gone. On that first Easter Sunday, Mary Magdalene had found Jesus' tomb empty. She was grieving inconsolably in the graveyard garden - when suddenly she heard a familiar voice speaking one life-changing word. "Mary" (John 20:16). And on my darkest day, it was my name He called. I have asked Jesus to speak to each weeping one on my heart - and speak their name. For Scripture promises that He is "close to brokenhearted" (Psalm 34:18). And that He can go deep in the human heart where no one else can go and bring hope and healing no one else can bring. Our times of greatest loss are the times of our greatest experiences of His love. I have lived it. I can't carry all the burdens of my wounded loved ones. But if my Jesus has beaten death, surely He can bear their burdens and bring back the sun. Jesus can simultaneously be holding and hugging each one as if they are the only one. I have felt that hug. I have been carried by Him when I could not take another step. If you want to have this personal relationship with Jesus, tell Him today, "Jesus, I'm Yours." Go to our website and see how to be sure you belong to Him. It's ANewStory.com. The storms keep coming. But, Jesus, You are our safe room. And hope wins.

We may have fooled you into thinking this podcast is about sorting fictional characters into Hogwarts houses, but really, this is a podcast about Supernatural. And we're finally done hiding it (we never hid it). The episode may not be called Sort of Supernatural, but it's BASICALLY THE SAME THING. Sort of The Winchesters, the Supernatural prequel! Thanks be to the Ackles' and Robbie Thompson, and god bless the sexy silence. These are all deep cuts; if you don't live your life by this dumb show you won't understand them, and that's ok. Get out while you still can, it's too late for us. ANYWAY, this week we sort John Winchester (not smug about his house at ALL), Mary Winchester, Carlos Cervantez and Lata Dar. Listen to this episode, it was as easy for us as breathing. When Rachel and I say we sort characters as a natural part of every day conversation, we REALLY mean that about Supernatural characters. We know them all personally and we're here to tell you about them. This Scooby gang is full of emotions houses and we love them all. RENEW THE SHOW, WE WANT A SEASON 2. BLESS.

Invisible Luchadores: Evil SpiritsLuchadores are the many wrestling personalities that make up Mexico’s wrestling pop culture known as Lucha Libre. The luchador wears an iconic mask and matching outfit to reinforce is characters personality and storyline. He generally has a trademarked grappling move that he uses on his opponent to subdue them, pin them to the ground and disqualify them from the competition.Luchadores are fictitious characters that exist for our entertainment, but life has a way of revealing very real luchadores that rise up to oppose the purposes and plans God has for all of our lives. They show up the moment we are conceived and are especially active when are young and vulnerable. They look to find success and establish a foothold in our lives, jumping into the ring whenever their grappling skills are needed. The luchador will nudge, shove, contain, carry off, submit and even destroy. He will function at any level we allow.Luchadores have names, familiar to us all, like insecurity, discouragement, unbelief, fear, bitterness, deception, sickness, spirit, Satan. And the luchador is a master of disguise, the best of which is his ability to function without even being noticed. We see the negative circumstances he creates, but we fail to detect his presence. As a result, we think to ourselves, this is just the way life is sometimes, it’s how things often go, it’s something that we have to put up with, or at best, something we have to work around. We end up living lives that are less than what Jesus died for, simply because we fail to bring about the luchador’s eviction. This series is designed to expose the invisible luchadores that we need to identify, call out, rebuke and banish forever so that we can thrive in life enjoying the good things that God has for each and every one of us! Matthew 8:16 That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick.Hollywood and pop-cultures depiction of spirits/demons has led many to disregard and even disbelieve their reality/function in the real world. But scripture paints a far more normative picture:Jesus had regular interactions with the Devil, demons and spirits.Satan in the desert – Matthew 4Syrophoenician woman with an unclean spirit - Mark 7:25–26 Mary Magdalene, who had seven demons - Luke 8:1–2; John 11:2 Man in synagogue - Mark 1:23–26Man called Legion – Mark 5:2-5Crowds - Matthew 8:16 Jesus gave His disciples the mission/authority to cast out spirits.Matthew 10:1 (ESV) And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The Early Church regularly dealt with spirits.Peter - Acts 5:16Phillip – Acts 8:6-7Paul – Acts 16:16-17Casting out spirits is part of a believer’s mission.Mark 16:17–18 (ESV) And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”Notables About Spirits: spirits are not to blame for everything or even the majority of things but they exist and are very real. They are not to be feared. they impact us all on some levelEphesians 6:12 (ESV) For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.1 Peter 5:8 (ESV) Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.they attach to people through key gateways of sin (by, and against)rebellion (Saul’s) - 1 Samuel 16:14–15 (ESV) Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the Lord tormented him. And Saul’s servants said to him, “Behold now, a harmful spirit from God is tormenting you.prostitution (Mary) - John 11:2 (ESV) It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.occult (Slave girl & Paul) - Acts 16:16–18 (ESV) As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.unsaved (Syrophoenician) - Mark 7:25–26 (ESV) But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.Judas betrayal - Luke 22:3–4 (ESV) Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them.In my experience spirits nudge, budge, shove and onboard in moments of fear, deception, loss, trauma, unforgiveness, bitterness, sinthey drive those they attack into acts of self-sabotageYoung boy - Mark 9:22 (ESV) And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”Demoniac - Mark 5:5 (ESV) Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.Saul trying to kill David - 1 Samuel 18:10–11 (ESV) The next day a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand. And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice.respond to medication (as opposed to eviction) - 1 Samuel 16:23 (ESV) And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.a common fingerprint of spirits is the presence of bizarre medical conditionstongue but mute - Mark 9:17 (ESV) And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute.ears but deaf - Mark 9:25 (ESV) And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”spirit of infirmity - Luke 13:11 (ESV) And behold, there was a woman who had had a disabling spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself.a common fingerprint of spirits is heightened emotional outbursts - Mark 5:5 (ESV) Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.not intimidated by spiritual atmospheres (church) - Mark 1:23 (ESV) And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, when cast out, they will try to come back - Matthew 12:43–45 (ESV) “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.”while spirits will escalate from harassment to attachment to possession, there are no examples of believers being possessedWalking In Freedom From Nudge, Budge, Shove….Follow Jesus And Fear Not - Acts 19:13–16 (ESV) Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.Recognize A Spirits Influencetesting - Romans 12:2 (ESV) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.test - 1 John 4:1 (ESV) Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.recognition - 2 Corinthians 2:11 (ESV) so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.discerning of spirits - 1 Corinthians 12:10 (KJV 1900) To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:ask for wisdom - James 1:5 (ESV) If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. Burning Hearts become Broken Bread On Our Roads to Emmaus: Luke 24:13-35 On the third Sunday of Eastertide, we engaged one of St. Luke’s masterful resurrection stories, commonly titled, on the road to Emmaus. For those of our congregation who were not present, may I encourage you to listen to the sermon here and, or take a moment to reflect on the following summary. The risen Lord encounters a couple on the road to Emmaus. Despondent and disillusioned by the death of their Messiah, they walk away from Jerusalem, the epicenter and climax of redemptive history. Most likely, this is husband and wife, Cleopas and Mary (John 19:25), processing together what took place on Good Friday and the report of the empty tomb. They have not understood the deeper implications of these events. Why? Because they were walking away from Jerusalem, giving up on the dream, the vision marking their lives. Isn't this our core challenge? First, as a stranger, the risen Lord walks alongside and listens to their conversation. The story is correct, but they fail to understand. In hoping for the redemption of Israel, they only saw it fulfilled through military aggression. And their commander had just been taken out. As Jesus hears their story of hopeless defeat, he engages as they walk. Beginning with Moses through the Prophets, he tells a fresh perspective of Israel's story. They listen, with burning hearts, how their Messiah, before becoming human, was working and moving along with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, from creation forward, to bring about the one and final solution for the broken, fallen condition of the whole world. God had to become a human being to redeem and restore his good creation. Thus, the Father sent his Son, the Word (Logos) who spoke creation into existence, to be united with his created order. The agent of creation would become the agent of cosmic healing and transformation. We now understand the Torah, the Psalms and Prophets through the lens of Christ. We all have a story by which we’re defined. Consider how your own story has shaped your identity. Is Christ the determining factor of your story or something or someone else? Christ invites us not only into his story but into his very being, his life. I believe this is the story into which he invited them. See how it all fits together? Jesus drives it all home by a final question, "Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" This is the interpretive key to all the Scriptures. Only through the suffering love of the Son can new birth, new creation begin ... on the first day, the story begins. Echos of Genesis. As they approached their destination, they strongly urged Jesus to stay with them. Jesus accepted their invitation. This, too, is another clue from Luke for going farther and deeper with Jesus. Jesus responds to our invitations, to our hunger to abide in him. As they settled in and began to eat at table, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Luke says, “Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.” This might seem an odd way to exit, but, again, Luke is cluing us in on something. We no longer know the risen Lord as a mere historical human being, but after the Spirit. He has ascended to send us his Spirit by which we cry, “Abba, Father" and “Come, Lord Jesus!” Luke continues to describe how this couple reflected afterwards how their hearts burned as the risen Lord opened the Scriptures to them. We now see the context for how Christians worship, a twofold rhythm of Word and Sacrament, very much akin to the ancient liturgical form to which we embrace. This first meal of Christ’s new creation is an echo of the first meal recorded in Genesis, when another couple, Adam and Eve, ate from the wrong source. In their disobedience, their eyes, too, were opened. Naked and ashamed, they ran from the voice of the Lord walking in the cool of the Garden. Luke seems to be illustrating to us that "we are what we eat" and that the way back to life is eating the new meal of the Kingdom. For Jesus is the bread of life. The meal which introduced sin and death into the world no longer has a hold on God's creation. In Christ, we now celebrate the feast with continual thanksgiving. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Burning hearts become broken bread for the life of the world. Word and Sacrament are bound together as worship and mission. Though the hour is late and the road is dangerous, they get up and go back to Jerusalem. After the clouds have lifted and they understand the story, after recognizing him in the Eucharist, they can remain no longer at a distance. They make their way back to join their brothers and sisters, waiting for the promise of the Father and what would alter history, the emergence of the Church, the body of Christ. This is the path of suffering love, the way of the cross. Our journey to the Holy City is a similar one. Bearing fruit requires death to our egos, our selfish desires. In this exchange, we have the mind of Christ, the peace, the grace, the life of Christ. Thought death his life reigns in us and the world. This pattern is imprinted within the created order, from a grain of wheat to the metamorphosis of catapillars. Paradoxically, by letting go of my life (pertaining to what I think, want and feel), I gain Christ, the resurrection and the life. He takes us and breaks us and gives us to the world as sent members of his broken body. As we feed upon his living words and eat and drink of his risen life, we remember the Lord’s death until he comes. And, until he comes, we are his ambassadors of reconciliation. By his Spirit, he continues to appear, to speak, to bring understanding to our lives. His risen promise is his presence. "I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Alleluia, Christ is risen!
