“Early on in that we noticed that there are so many people in the blind and visually impaired community that are underrepresented in the respect of entertainment, both as an entertainer and as the consumer. The only products they have are descriptive videos on Netflix or something like that. And so they can't get the exact same experience as the sighted world when they're dealing with forms of entertainment. So we shifted our focus to the blind and visually impaired market, both as people who could assist us in making these audio dramas, our stories, more original, as well as sound-designing these things in a 360-degree or surround sound way so that those whose world is nothing but sound, they really could enjoy it in a way that was meant just for them.” -- Micah Thomas This episode's guest is a twenty-plus year content creator, armed with a Master's Degree in Internet Marketing and a BA in Media Communications who's found the right content to pour his energy into…sound. This father of six and husband of one has worked as a jack-of-all-trades in media but has become a master of audio and storytelling with his company Storymore. As a person with low vision, he has a passion for telling great stories in the best way he can, which led him to form a global group that's disrupting the audio entertainment industry with its accomplishments. Chief among them is providing a platform that equalizes the playing field for those with visual disabilities. His name is Micah Thomas, and our discussion covers a variety of topics, from audio dramas and music to how AI is changing both those industries. I think you'll really enjoy his insights! As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available and what the newest audio chats will be about. If you're getting some value from listening, the best ways to show your support are to share this podcast with a friend and leave an honest review. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. (0:00:00) – The Power of Audio EntertainmentWe start things off with a trip down memory lane as Micah recalls the radio plays and adaptations that helped inspire his career in sound. “The stories captivated me,” he tells us, “because of the voice actors and how real they sounded, and I think that's the first time via audio that it actually brought tears to my eyes.” We talk about how Storymore uses sound production to bring stories to life for blind and visually impaired listeners, and we listen to a clip from the Storymore original suspense tale Barley. “We had one guy that said the sound was so good,” he says, “that ‘I had to literally turn my head. I thought someone was entering the room because I heard a door open behind me.'”(0:12:47) - AI Impact on Audio EntertainmentThe conversation turns to AI and how it's opening up new creative possibilities while leaving room for a human touch at Storymore, and Micah shares with us both the cover art and a sound clip of the Storymore original mystery Alibi. “There's just no way,” Micah explains, “at this point in time, especially, that AI can reach the levels and depths of emotion and her mental state that she's in to provide this type of performance.” We also discuss the difference between audible dramas and traditional audiobooks, and the storytelling power of sound. “It allows you the opportunity to point your own cameras,” he tells us,...

Disinformation continues to be a threat to Ukrainian sovereignty and is also targeted at Western democracies and allies of Ukraine. Around the world aggressive information warfare threatens information security and social stability, especially in states which Russia seeks to destabilise or coerce into supporting it. As we saw in the 2016 US elections, it can potentially threaten results of voting, place undue influence on voters' decisions and undermine democratic processes. This is more important than ever, with a slew of elections in 2024 and the advent of exponential AI created fakes. ---------- Valeria Kovtun is Deputy Project Director at the Zinc Network, a cognitive resilience programme rolling out in Ukraine. This week Chris sits down with two special guests from Asbury University. AJ and Sam are both juniors in Media Communications who join us to talk about the revival that happened at Asbury in 2023.
On today's show, we start with a brand new report on the state of Hindu nationalism called The Global VHP's Trail of Violence, published by Savera, which is a multiracial, interfaith, anti-caste coalition of Indian Americans and partners, standing together in the fight against the rise of the transnational far right. We're in conversation with the editor of that report, Safa Ahmed, who is the Associate Director of Media & Communications with the Indian American Muslim Council. Take a look at the Savera report: https://www.wearesavera.org/resources/reports/ Then, we'll take a look at new anti-trans legislation. We're joined by Ryan Thoreson, who advises Human Rights Watch on LGBTQ issues, and we'll talk about some of the specific new laws in 2024 as well as their direct correlation to young trans suicidality. Latest data tracking on anti-trans laws across the US: https://translegislation.com/ Then to the impressive statistical value of our little known national social services hotline. Last week, the LA Times published a piece called This social service hotline you've never heard of could help pinpoint California's next big crisis. We're joined by LA Times data reporter Gabrielle LaMarr LeMee, as well as one of the developers of an organization called 211 Counts, Matthew Kreuter. Read the LA Times article: https://www.latimes.com/projects/hotline-211-data-housing-crisis/ Check out 211 data: https://211counts.org/ We round out the hour with a report on recent San Francisco civil settlements with Mission Local's Eleni Balakrishnan. A brand new report on the state of Hindu nationalism calls out the violence of the Hindu supremacist political movement both within India, but also with a stronghold among conservative Hindus in the US who have built close allied relationships with famed white supremacists like, for example, Steve Bannon, who is an honorary chairman of the Republican Hindu Coalition. That report is called The Global VHP's Trail of Violence, published by Savera, which is a multiracial, interfaith, anti-caste coalition of Indian Americans and partners, standing together in the fight against the rise of the transnational far right. Today we're in conversation with the editor of that report, Safa Ahmed, who is the Associate Director of Media & Communications with the Indian American Muslim Council. In 17 years of The Listening Post, we have never seen a story anything like Israel's war on Gaza.It has been a turning point for the world order as we know it and its media ecosystem – which is why, since October 7, we have covered nothing else.In this special edition, we compiled our reporting on the Gaza war over the past 12 weeks. The extent of the brutality, a genocide unfolding in plain sight; the sheer volume of disinformation, designed to defend the indefensible; and the complicity of so many Western news outlets – repeatedly exposed for failing to question Israeli propaganda, then spreading it.Contributors:Ariella Aïsha Azoulay - Professor of Modern Culture & Media, Brown UniversityAzad Essa - Author, Hostile HomelandsDaniel Levy - President, US/Middle East ProjectOrly Noy - Journalist, Human Rights AdvocateOmar Al-Ghazzi - Associate Professor of Media & Communications, London School of EconomicsRami Younis - Journalist; Former host On the Other Hand, Makan 33Ramzy Baroud - Editor-in-Chief, Palestine ChronicleSarah Leah Whitson - Executive Director, DAWNSwasti Rao - Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies & AnalysesYara Eid - Palestinian Journalist in GazaYumna Patel - Palestine News Director, MondoweissSubscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribeFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/AJEnglishFind us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/aljazeeraCheck our website: https://www.aljazeera.com/Check out our Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/aljazeeraenglish/Download AJE Mobile App: https://aje.io/AJEMobile@AljazeeraEnglish#Aljazeeraenglish#News

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the number of meetings you attend and wonder whether your time could be better used elsewhere? According to research referenced in Harvard Business Review, executives now spend an average of 23 hours per week in meetings--up from about 10 hours in the 1960s. Are the extra hours spent in meetings making us more or less productive? That's the question we're going to tackle in today's episode. More importantly, we're going to find out how we can do fewer meetings and make the meetings we do have more productive. About our Guest Yari (pronounced Jah-Dee) Ising is the founder of The Ising Agency, a firm offering operations, recruiting, and admin support for stretched-thin in-house teams. Before launching her agency, she was the director of client operations for a staffing agency where she built teams that thrived together. She has a background in Television Production, Media & Communications and has managed live events and built in-house creative teams for Fortune 500 Companies. For the last decade, she helped get the right people in place to build the most efficient and productive workflows. What You'll Learn Why doing “less” creates “more” output and satisfaction How to professionally excuse yourself from meetings you don't need to be in Why an agenda (that actually gets followed!) is a non-negotiable for every meeting How tools like Loom can replace some of your meetings Links for This Episode: Website: https://www.itsyari.com/ LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yari-ising/ LinkedIn Business Page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/itsyari Connect with Dr. Mike: Website: https://www.drmikepatterson.com Book: https://www.missionfirstpeoplealwaysbook.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmichaellpatterson Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therealdrmikepatterson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/drmikepatterson Buy The Book!: Mission First People Always Episode Minute By Minute: 00:00 Introduction to Today's Episode On Having Fewer Meetings 01:17 Guest Introduction: Yadi Ising 02:59 Yadi Ising's Personal Journey 04:39 The Problem with Meetings 06:36 The Impact of COVID-19 on Meeting Culture 07:56 The Paradox of Productivity in Meetings 09:22 The Role of Meetings in the Modern Workplace 10:56 Creating Effective Meetings 21:54 The Benefits of Fewer Meetings 24:06 The Role of Trust and Clear Expectations in Meetings 26:07 How Yadi Ising's Agency Helps Teams 31:29 Practical Advice for Better Meetings 34:21 Conclusion and Final Thoughts
