‘The Blind Side' Controversy: Sorting Fact from Fiction

In 2009, audiences flocked to the theater to see a heartwarming movie, ‘The Blind Side.' Based on a true story, the film depicts a young, Black man named Michael Oher who came from an unstable background, getting adopted by a wealthy white family, who then helped propel him to NFL stardom as an offensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens. By the time its box office run ended, “The Blind Side” earned the moniker "highest-grossing sports movie of all time" and was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, where Sandra Bullock won Best Actress for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy.  But now, in real life, the sentimental story has gone sideways. Its central character, Michael Oher, claims the Tuohy family never adopted him at all, and instead took advantage of him. The Tuohy family strongly denies these claims. So today, Michael Fletcher, who first broke this story, digs into these stunning allegations and explains how the truth of Michael Oher's story has become harder to find. How important relationships are—mentally & emotionally.      Relationships are good for the soul.   The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your relationships. -Michael Fletcher    relationship audit   When you sow into relationships w/out expectations, you can reap 30, 60, 100 fold. I unexpectedly reaped so much this weekend. So many of my amazing classmates made feel so seen, loved, valued & appreciated. I will be forever grateful.   The right relationships can change your mood. They feel loving, accepting, nonjudgmental.    Unhealthy or toxic relationships can also change your mood.    Judgmental relationships feel very oppressive to me. After being in transactional, conditional, judgmental relationships for over 20 years, I no longer choose to be in those relationships…regardless of the possible financial benefits.   A hug can change a person's entire demeanor, for the better.    Smiles are contagious.   The quality & caliber of my classmates is mind boggling.    A small unexpected gesture can be life transforming. One of my classmates went up to the mic in a room full of about 500 people & asked for me by name. It was humbling & made me feel valued & appreciated. It was humbling & I was so thankful. (Thank you, Kelli.)   Life is short.   Time flies.   The most important currency is time (to me). Some value money more but say time is most important. Observe actions over words.   You have no idea who's watching you.    You have no idea the impact you're making on someone else's life. A handful of my classmates shared times when I had impacted them positively & I had no idea it was impactful to them. It was humbling.   If you're ready to take your emotional growth to the next level, join our EQ Mafia at eqgangster.com.

It’s the Midday Newswrap: The Labor Department released the monthly job numbers this morning, and, as has been the case for the last seven or eight years, the numbers continue to be good. The unemployment rate has stayed steady at 3.9%. The economy added 201 thousand jobs in August, and wages grew by .4 percent , up nearly three percent for the year. Analysts have observed that wages are growing at a faster rate than inflation for the first time in a long time.In a now infamous op-ed in the NY Times from a person identified by the Times as a Senior Administration Official, someone claims that she or he is one of many people working behind the scenes to, in this person’s words, “frustrate parts of the Trump agenda, and the President’s “worst inclinations.” Just what parts, just how many people, and who is making this claim are not yet known. Plus, NFL opened its season last night in a broadcast that featured a new Nike commercial narrated by Colin Kaepernick. We’ll talk about Nike’s decision to place Kaepernick front and center in its 30th anniversary ad campaign.Tom is joined in studio by Michael Fletcher, a senior writer with ESPN’s The Undefeated, the online platform that explores the intersection of race, culture and sports; and Ian Samuel, an associate professor of law at Indiana University, and the co-host of a podcast about the Supreme Court, called First Mondays.

Today on Midday, a conversation about race, and corporate culture. Last Wednesday, the NFL announced that they would ban players from kneeling on the field during the national anthem, and that they teams would face fines if any players chose to do so. On Tuesday, ABC cancelled the reboot of the popular 90’s sitcom “Roseanne” following racist tweets by the program’s star Roseanne Barr. While Barr was getting boot, 175,000 Starbucks employees were engaged in racial bias training, as the company closed 8,000 locations following an incident in Philadelphia in which two African American men were arrested for...well, being in Starbucks. How is institutional racism and racial bias confronted in the corporate world?Tom is joined by Dr. Kimberly Moffitt is an associate professor of American Studies and affiliate assistant professor of Africana Studies and Language, Literacy and Culture at the University of MD Baltimore County.
