He served as Penn's inaugural Vice Provost for Climate Science, Policy, and Action, and currently serves as Director of the Penn Center for Science, Sustainability, and the Media (PCSSM). Dr. Mann received his undergraduate degrees in Physics and Applied Math from the University of California at Berkeley, an M.S. degree in Physics from Yale University, and a Ph.D. in Geology & Geophysics from Yale University. His research interests include the study of Earth's climate system and the science, impacts and policy implications of human-caused climate change. Dr. Mann was a Lead Author on the Observed Climate Variability and Change chapter of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Third Scientific Assessment Report in 2001 and was organizing committee chair for the National Academy of Sciences Frontiers of Science in 2003. He has received a number of honors and awards including NOAA's outstanding publication award in 2002 and selection by Scientific American as one of the fifty leading visionaries in science and technology in 2002. He contributed, with other IPCC authors, to the award of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He was awarded the Hans Oeschger Medal of the European Geosciences Union in 2012 and was awarded the National Conservation Achievement Award for science by the National Wildlife Federation in 2013. He made Bloomberg News' list of fifty most influential people in 2013. In 2014, he was named Highly Cited Researcher by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) and received the Friend of the Planet Award from the National Center for Science Education. He received the Stephen H. Schneider Award for Outstanding Climate Science Communication from Climate One in 2017, the Award for Public Engagement with Science from the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2018 and the Climate Communication Prize from the American Geophysical Union in 2018. In 2019 he received the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement and in 2020 he received the World Sustainability Award of the MDPI Sustainability Foundation. He was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2020. He received the Leo Szilard Award of the American Physical Society in 2021 and was named Humanist of the Year by the American Humanist Association in 2023. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 2024 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2026. Aug-Heist comes to a close with this 1995 Michael Mann film starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, sharing screen time for the first time in their careers. Mann already made this movie once, in 1989 as a made-for-TV movie called L.A. Takedown. In this iteration, De Niro plays the leader of a sophisticated band of thieves while Pacino plays the hardboiled detective obsessed with taking them down. The film features an all-star ensemble including Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd, Amy Brenneman, Diane Venora, Wes Studi, Dennis Haysbert, Jon Voight, and a young Natalie Portman. Critics praised the film, yet it opened behind family-friendly fare like Jumanji and Toy Story. Retrospective reviews have named it one of the most influential crime films of all time, inspiring works as diverse as The Dark Knight and Grand Theft Auto, there is a sequel/prequel, Heat 2, is due out next year. Michael Mann's Manhunter (1986) brought Thomas Harris's Hannibal Lecter universe to the screen years before The Silence of the Lambs became a cultural phenomenon, and did it with neon light, synths, forensic procedure, and an overwhelming sense of loneliness. John and Miles revisit Mann's cult classic to discuss William Petersen's haunted Will Graham, Tom Noonan's terrifying and unexpectedly vulnerable Francis Dollarhyde, Brian Cox's remarkably understated Hannibal Lecktor, and a film in which empathy becomes both a detective's greatest weapon and a dangerous form of self-erasure. Plus: home movies, immaculate architecture, the tiger scene, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” and the question of whether Manhunter might be the purest Michael Mann movie of them all.

Monster storms, too much rain, not enough rain, hail, and heat have become more prevalent in a political context made worse by a fossil-fuel cozy federal government. On today's show, host Esty Dinur speaks with Dr. Michael Mann about climate change, super El Niño, and the Trump administration's attacks on environmental protections.  Trump and Republican legislators have blamed Canada for the wildfire smoke that blanketed large areas of the US last week, but he and the vast majority of Republicans in Congress are taking large sums of money from fossil fuel interests. There was a time when Republicans passed climate legislation, but Mann says they've all moved to the anti-environment extreme.  Mann describes climate change's effect on the jet stream, including the proliferation of “resonance events.” If it's possible to find a silver lining in all the climate chaos, it's that El Niño years tend to result in less active Caribbean hurricane seasons, says Mann.  They also discuss the environmental costs of war, China's move toward “clean energy,” what could happen if Democrats gained control of Congress, and Mann's latest book with Peter J. Hotez called, Science Under Siege: How to Fight the Five Most Powerful Forces that Threaten Our World. Michael Mann is a Presidential Distinguished Professor of Earth & Environmental Science and Director of the Penn Center for Science, Sustainability and the Media at the University of Pennsylvania. For seven seasons Patrick J. Adams has charmed audiences worldwide, as Mike Ross in USA's hit drama, "Suits," a role which garnered him a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. Adams took on the role of Major John Glenn in the Nat Geo/Disney + original series, "The Right Stuff." With Zoe Saldana & Jason Isaacs, Adams starred in the 2014 television miniseries "Rosemary's Baby" directed by Agnieska Holland. Additional television credits include Michael Mann and David Milch's acclaimed series "Luck" opposite Dustin Hoffman and Michael Gambon, season two of the hit series "Orphan Black" opposite Tatiana Maslany, "Lost," "Friday Night Lights," "Pretty Little Liars," "N.C.I.S.," "Lie To Me" and "Flash Forward." Additionally, Adams starred in indie films such as, "The Waterhole," 2009 Slamdance entry "Weather Girl," "6 Month Rule" directed by Blayne Weaver and "Car Dogs" opposite Academy Award winning actress Octavia Spencer.
