He previously served as Governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2015, following two terms as Mayor of the City of Baltimore.Once they (the Trump Administration) got rid of the heads of all of the offices of Inspectors General, they started launching these big lies, like the lie that there are 12 million dead people that continue to receive checks. And as Trump said himself to Congress, some of them are as much as 300 years old, which would have had them here for the founding of Jamestown.Martin O'MalleyThey (Republicans) are trying to wreck it (Social Security), wreck its reputation, wreck its customer service, so then they can rob it.Martin O'MalleyNews 10/3/25* Our top story this week is President Trump's chilling speech to the military high command, in which he proclaimed that “America is under invasion from within,” per PBS. Trump went on to say that he plans to use American cities – citing Chicago, San Francisco, and Portland – as “training grounds for our military.” Warning against conscientious objections by the military to this weaponization against domestic opponents, Trump added “I'm going to be meeting with generals and with admirals and with leaders. And if I don't like somebody, I'm going to fire them right on this spot.” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who has recently styled himself Secretary of War, reiterated this message, saying “if the words I'm speaking today are making your heart sink, then you should do the honorable thing and resign.” In terms of actual policy, a new draft National Defense Strategy calls for prioritizing defense of the “homeland,” over potential foreign threats, such as from China, per POLITICO. The administration followed up this declaration with a dystopian deployment in Chicago, where federal agents rappelled down from helicopters to raid a South Side apartment building, arresting Venezuelan migrants and Black American citizens alike. In a statement given to ABC7 Chicago, one man detained by feds stated “They had the Black people in one van, and the immigrants in another.” Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker decried the presence of “jackbooted thugs roaming around a peaceful downtown,” and demanded federal troops “Get out of Chicago...You are not helping us,” per the New York Times.* Speaking of conflicts abroad, this week Trump unveiled his proposal for a peace deal in Gaza. According to CNN, “The plan calls for Israel to release 250 Palestinian prisoners with life sentences, as well as 1,700 Palestinians detained since the start of the war, in exchange for Hamas freeing 48 hostages.” Once these exchanges have been completed, Israel is to gradually withdraw from Gaza and turn over administration of the enclave to a “Board of Peace,” which will include Trump himself along with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, in a bizarre historical echo of the British mandatory rule over Palestine. If this process proceeds, it will supposedly create “a path for a just peace on the basis of a two-state solution.” The odds of success however are slim.* In more Gaza news, the Global Sumud Flotilla has been intercepted off the coast of Gaza and Israel has detained the activists on board. Video evidence shows the IDF detaining activist Greta Thunberg specifically. According to Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, “The Israeli government has illegally abducted over 450 participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla, including nearly two dozen U.S. citizens…We must demand their immediate release and their protection from abuse and torture in Israeli detention. End the siege and genocide of Gaza now.” According to the Flotilla organizers, one of the ships – the Mikeno – got as close as 9.3 miles from the coast, within Gaza's territorial waters, before they lost its signal. While disappointing, given that this is the largest aid flotilla to Gaza in history and came so close to the shore, it seems that at least the flotilla gave fishermen in Gaza the opportunity to go out on the water without interference from the Israeli navy – a crack in the all-encompassing blockade.* Meanwhile, Fox News reports that Israeli intelligence hijacked all cellphones in Gaza in order to forcibly broadcast Prime Minister Netanyahu's United Nations General Assembly speech last week, in which he accused the leaders of western nations who recently recognized the state of Palestine – France, Australia, and the U.K. among others – of being “Leaders who appease evil rather than support a nation whose brave soldiers guard you from the barbarians at the gate,” adding, “They're already penetrating your gates. When will you learn?” Netanyahu's speech was also blasted into Gaza via loudspeakers on the Israeli side of the border. The families of the hostages still held in Gaza released a statement decrying this provocative action, writing “We know from our children…that the loudspeakers were placed inside Gaza. This action endangers their lives, all for the sake of a so-called public diplomacy campaign to preserve [Netanyahu's] rule…He is doing PR at the expense of our children's lives and security. Today we lost the last shred of trust we had in the political echelon and in the army leaders who approved this scandalous operation.”* In Latin America, Trump is planning to bailout Argentina, which has suffered tremendous economic shocks under the stewardship of radical Libertarian President Javier Milei. According to Newsweek, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has offered Argentina a, “$20 billion swap line and other forms of assistance to help stabilize the Argentine peso, and said the U.S. remained ‘prepared to do what is necessary' to sustain the ‘important strides' taken by Milei.” This kind of ideologically driven foreign assistance flies in the face of Trump's supposed “America First” policies, but beyond that it has infuriated domestic interests, especially in the agricultural sector. American Soybean Association President Caleb Ragland posted a statement reading, “The frustration is overwhelming…U.S. soybean prices are falling, harvest is underway, and farmers read headlines not about securing a trade agreement with China, but that the U.S. is extending…economic support to Argentina.” This is a particular twist of the knife because following Trump's offer, Argentina lowered export restrictions and sent “20 shiploads of Argentine soybeans to China in just two days.” Republicans representing agricultural interests share this fury. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley wrote “Why would [America] help bail out Argentina while they take American soybean producers' biggest market???...We should use leverage at every turn to help [the] hurting farm economy. Family farmers should be top of mind in negotiations by representatives of [the] USA.” North Dakota Representative Julie Fedorchak added “This is a bitter pill for North Dakota soybean farmers to swallow.”* Moving on from foreign affairs, this week saw the release of a new batch of Epstein files, demanded by Democrats on the House Oversight Committee and turned over by the Jeffrey Epstein Estate. These files include “phone message logs, copies of flight logs and manifests for aircraft,” along with “copies of financial ledgers and Epstein's daily schedule.” These new releases implicate many big names, including Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Steve Bannon, and well-documented Epstein associate, Prince Andrew of the British royal family, per the BBC. The release of these files is the latest victory in the campaign to expose everyone involved with Epstein's underage sex ring, a campaign Republicans in government – led by President Trump – have resisted. According to the Hill, Speaker Mike Johnson is refusing to allow the swearing-in of Adelita Grijalva, who was elected last week in a special election to fill the seat vacated by her father's death. In this move, many see an attempt by Speaker Johnson to stave off the discharge petition to release the Epstein files. Grijalva has already committed to signing the petition.* In the wake of the Charlie Kirk assassination, Republicans have hammered the left for what they see as violent rhetoric, with the White House going so far as to classify certain ideas – among them anti-fascism, anti-capitalism and “extremism on migration, race, and gender” – as potentially punishable under domestic terrorism laws. Meanwhile, however, the Arizona Mirror reports a Republican lawmaker in the state has called for the Washington Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal to be “tried convicted and hanged.” The lawmaker, state Representative John Gillette, was responding to a video in which Jayapal counseled protestors on “non-violent resistance” to Trump's policies. Gillette on the other hand has vocally supported the January 6th insurrectionaries, labeling them “political prisoners” and calling for their release. Asked for comment, Gillette said “The comment is what it is.” For her part, Congresswoman Jayapal has called for “All political leaders, of all parties, [to] denounce” these comments.* Turning to local news, incumbent New York City Mayor Eric Adams has dropped his bid for reelection, Reuters reports. Adams has been mired in scandal of all kinds, including a federal indictment for bribery. Speculation abounds as to why he chose to suspend his campaign now. It is too late to take his name off of the ballot and he declined to endorse any other candidate, making it unlikely that he did so to bolster the chances of disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is still continuing his independent bid for the mayoralty despite lagging behind Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani by a substantial margin. On the other hand, Adams has previously been offered incentives by President Trump to drop out of the race, including potential protection from prosecution and an ambassadorial post in Saudi Arabia. Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee, claims “Seven different people,” have offered him a “total of $10 million,” to withdraw from the race, but he adamantly refuses to do so, saying “you can't bribe me, buy me, lease me, I'm not for sale.” This from the New York Post.* Next, on September 25th, Black liberation activist Assata Shakur passed away at the age of 78, per Democracy Now!. Shakur had been convicted of killing a New Jersey state trooper in 1973, though serious doubts remain about her role in the death. She escaped from prison in 1979 and fled to Cuba, where she received asylum in 1984 and continued to maintain her innocence until her death. In 1998, Pope John Paul II visited Cuba and faced calls to demand Assata's extradition to the United States to “face justice” for the murder. In a highly-publicized letter, Assata wrote “The New Jersey State Police and other law enforcement officials say they want to see me brought to ‘justice.' But I would like to know what they mean by ‘justice.' Is torture justice?... When my people receive justice, I am sure that I will receive it, too.” Rest in power, Assata.* Our final story comes to us from, where else, but Hollywood. Variety reports, AI production studio Particle6 has created an AI “actress” who is “named” Tilly Norwood and thereby created a firestorm within the entertainment industry. Tilly's creator, Eline Van der Velden argues that she sees, “AI not as a replacement for people, but as a new tool…Just as animation, puppetry, or CGI opened fresh possibilities without taking away from live acting…nothing – certainly not an AI character – can take away the craft or joy of human performance.” However, SAG-AFTRA – the union representing screen actors – has issued a blistering statement, writing “To be clear, ‘Tilly Norwood' is not an actor, it's a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation…It has no life experience to draw from, no emotion and, from what we've seen, audiences aren't interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience.” The statement continues, “It doesn't solve any ‘problem' — it creates the problem of using stolen performances to put actors out of work, jeopardizing performer livelihoods and devaluing human artistry.” This episode is simply the latest clash within the entertainment industry between workers and the rising tide of AI. Tonight's Triple Feature is a director spotlight on Michael Mann, a filmmaker who has built his career around professionals under pressure and the costs of living by codes.We begin with Ferrari (2023) — a film Mann spent decades trying to make. Starring Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, the movie takes place in the summer of 1957, when Ferrari's company was facing bankruptcy, his marriage was crumbling, and the infamous Mille Miglia race loomed large. The Keep (1982) is a World War II period piece set against the Carpathian mountains as Nazis invade Romania and discover a fortress built not to keep things out, but keep them in. Propelled by a sick ass Tangerine Dream soundtrack and visuals you will not find in any other 80s horror, this is a unique picture. Is it as good as Thief, Collateral, Heat, or Miami Vice? Absolutely not! The production of The Keep was a tragicomedy of errors but the finished product is still very much worth your time. Muhammad Ali is widely recognized as one of the greatest athletes of all-time and one of the most important figures of the 20th century. In addition to his long and celebrated career as a boxer and three-time heavyweight champion of the world, Ali changed the conversation about race, religion, and politics in America. Ali's refusal to be inducted into the U.S. military during the Vietnam War on religious grounds—a profound act of resistance that resulted not only in Ali's three-plus-year exile from professional boxing, but also a criminal conviction and five year-prison sentence that Ali almost had to serve until it was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court—represented a pivotal moment of the 1960s. Ali has been the subject of numerous books and documentary films, including the Oscar-winning When We Were Kings (1996) and The Trials of Muhammad Ali (2013). He is also the subject of the 2001 Hollywood biopic, Ali (co-written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Will Smith as Ali), which focuses on the ten-year period from Ali's capture of the heavyweight crown from Sonny Liston in 1964 to Ali's fight against George Foreman in Zaire in 1974 (the famed “Rumble in the Jungle”). L'acteur britannique a été récompensé à la cérémonie des Emmy Awards aux Etats-Unis la semaine dernière. Une reconnaissance pour cette fiction qui a fait bouger les lignes dans le monde réel. Deuxième plus gros succès pour une série anglophone sur la plateforme américaine, Adolescence, raconte en quatre épisodes l'histoire d'un jeune adolescent de treize ans accusé du meurtre d'une camarade de classe. La série met en lumière l'influence des idées masculinistes sur les réseaux sociaux. Stéphane Graham a écrit la série avec le scénariste Jack Thorne et il joue le père de l'adolescent. Habitué des films de gangsters On l'a vu dans The Irishman de Martin Scorsese, Public Enemies de Michael Mann ou encore Snatch de Guy Ritchie.  Mais il a aussi joué dans des drames : un skinhead dans This is England ou la série The Virtues sur les violences faites aux enfants. Massif, tout en muscles, l'acteur de 52 ans est né à Kirby dans la périphérie de Liverpool, dans un milieu populaire. Un père travailleur social, une mère infirmière et un grand-père jamaïcain. Et ce sont justement ses origines qu'il a mises en avant dans son discours après avoir reçu l'Emmy Award de la meilleure mini-série : « Ce genre de chose n'arrive généralement pas à un enfant comme moi. Je suis juste un métis issu d'un immeuble du quartier de Kirby. Alors, pour moi, être ici aujourd'hui devant mes camarades et être reconnu par vous est la plus grande leçon d'humilité que je puisse imaginer et cela vous montre que tous les rêves sont possibles ». Dans une interview, il expliquait qu'il était urgent d'avoir « une discussion » au sujet des violences en ligne contre les femmes : « nous sommes tous responsables : le système éducatif, les parents, la communauté, le gouvernement et surtout les réseaux sociaux ». « Il est très sérieux dans son travail », raconte Lanre Bakare, journaliste culture au quotidien britannique The Guardian. « Il peut paraître jovial, et il a cette image publique d'un homme calme, amusant et frivole. Mais quand on parle de son travail, il le prend très au sérieux. » Débat de société La série et son sujet de radicalisation masculiniste en ligne se sont invités au Parlement britannique. Keir Starmer a raconté avoir visionné la série en famille et proposé de la diffuser dans les collèges et les lycées. Le chef du gouvernement britannique a aussi reconnu la nécessité de s'attaquer à ce « problème émergent et croissant ». Il a promis que des policiers allaient prochainement être formés. Le journaliste Lanre Bakare fait le parallèle avec le film français La Haine : « On disait dans la presse que Jacques Chirac l'avait montré au gouvernement, ce qui avait déclenché un grand débat en France sur la situation des jeunes immigrés vivant en banlieue parisienne. Je pense que c'est très similaire au débat ouvert par la série Adolescence au Royaume-Uni. Stephen et son équipe ont mis le doigt sur un sujet qui inquiétait beaucoup de gens. C'est un phénomène dont on sait qu'il existe, qui est constamment débattu, mais aucune fiction n'avait vraiment mis le doigt dessus et humanisé la situation ». En France, la ministre de l'Éducation sortante Elisabeth Borne veut proposer la série Adolescence comme support pédagogique à partir de la 4ᵉ. En Italie, de plus en plus de séries explorent les tourments de l'adolescence. Stephen Graham a créé plus qu'un divertissement. Un acteur engagé sans être politisé. « Je pense que son travail est politique, car tout l'est, mais sans pour autant devenir partisan », analyse Lanre Bakare qui l'a interviewé il y a quelques années. « Il n'est pas forcément une figure de gauche. Je pense qu'il veut que son travail parle pour lui. Et on voit à ses sujets qu'il aborde ce qui lui tient à cœur, les grands enjeux qu'il souhaite porter à l'attention du public. Et je pense que c'est, d'une certaine manière, politique. » Une épouse omniprésente Dans son discours aux Emmy Award, Stephen Graham a aussi beaucoup remercié sa femme. Elle joue un rôle clé à ses côtés. Hanna Walter est, elle aussi, actrice. Ils se sont rencontrés pendant leurs études de théâtre dramatique. Ils vivent dans la campagne anglaise avec leurs deux enfants. La place d'Hanna Walter est cruciale : c'est elle qui relie ses scénarios et c'est elle qui l'aide à apprendre ses textes. It's become something of a recurring theme on The Film ‘89 Podcast of late where the film being discussed has been described as “one of the big ones”, a film of such significance to the hosts that it fills them with an almost dread anticipation that they might not do it justice. No film fits that bill more than the one being discussed on Episode 138, an episode that Neil and Skye have been teasing and putting off for the longest time. That film is Michael Mann's epic tale of crime and obsession from 1995, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro and an astonishing supporting cast, it is of course, Heat. An original idea of Mann's and based on the real life exploits of former Chicago Detective, Chuck Adamson, and bank robber, Neil McCauley, Heat is a sprawling crime saga where character development is as important as any other aspect of of the story being told, whilst also featuring some of the most technically astounding action ever committed to film. Not only was it the film that brought together arguably the two greatest actors alive at the time, but it also showcased a director at the very top of his creative game. It's been the guys' intention to cover some of 1995's best films this year for their 30th anniversary, and this is the second of three such episodes but there's every chance that they'll declare Heat not just the best film of that year, but one of the very best ever made.

Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay quit their jobs at the diner kitchen in dramatic fashion so they can rush home and talk about the second half of 'Heat.' In the continuation of their special two-part coverage of the movie, they discuss the back half that features the greatest shootout scene caught on camera. It's 30 years later and the scene is still untouched, and filled with minute details from Michael Mann as the actors clearly displayed military handling of the weapons, and the director even made sure the bags of money were close to how much they'd weigh in real life. After shattering the cerebral touch of the first half of the flick with the shootout, the movie shifts to a revenge thriller as Rober De Niro's McCauley goes on a mission to tie up loose ends, while Al Pacino's Vincent's home life falls to pieces. Both men are forced to deal with the consequences for their poor decisions, as the film ends with a violent encounter that solidifies their feelings for one another. Andy and Bombay then take a moment, wipe away their own tears, and bask in the beauty of their favorite movie.

CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY WHICH WILL DISTURB SOME LISTENERS.  TGTPTU returns to its regularly scheduled Squib Games (S15) with the earlier of its latest temporal pincer movement pairing, TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA (1985).  Directed by William Friedkin, this is another Big Willie movie but not a Wyler: the second William has the credited surname of Peterson and this is his first film. William Peterson was so new to film acting that he called his fellow Chicagoan thespian buddy John Malkovich to see what he should quote as his asking price to play the lead character of Richard Chance, a thrill-seeking Secret Service agent who'll lose his partner only days from retirement (red-shirted partner's, not Chance's) and will get a new partner in John Pankow's Agent John Vukovich to pervert in his (Chance's) vengeful pursuit of a counterfeiter played by Willem Dafoe. (Next year Peterson would play another officer of the law in Manhunter as covered during TGTPTU's Mann Aged Season {S5,E5}; as an EPISODE CORRECTION Pankow did not portray Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Miloš Forman's film Amadeus but had done so at the Broadhurst Theatre, replacing Tim Curry.)  Because it's a Friedkin flick, there's an epic car chase meant to top The French Connection; because it's shot from a Friedkin script (adapted from a novel by former Secret Service agent Gerald Petievich, who receives a cowriting credit), there was a lot of improvisation on set driven by the actors, with both the ending and opening scenes re/written during shooting. Mentioning actors, the film is stacked with supporting roles by Dean Stockwell, John Turturro (who'll get more mention later in Season 15), and the Michael Mann-created film noir for television Crime Story's very own Darlanne Fluegel (listen back to S5,E6 for insights on this TV series).   TGTPTU hosts become split on the merits of the film. Thomas describes the movie as The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) on neon cocaine, but—no spoilers—you'll have to listen to the ep for whether he believes this is a good thing. Also, Jack lets out the three-legged dog and Ryan, while finding it impossible to resist singing the title, has issue with William Pederson. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay get back from dealing with three dead bodies off the sidewalk of Venice Boulevard to talk about the movie that led to the impetus of Degen Cinema. It's a very special 100th episode as the fellas discuss a film they are so obsessed with it had previously been off-limits of even being mentioned on the podcast, Michael Mann's Heat. In this episode they tackle the diner scene and everything earlier as this was how the film was divided when first released on a double cassette VHS.  The boys recall the first times renting it in their youth, and then repeated viewings on cable, as this masterpiece featured the cinema equivalent of Magic Johnson vs. Larry Bird with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro squaring off at the height of their respective powers. Mann crafted this over the better part of two decades in the business, which included a lackluster TV movie that was basically a dry run for what would later become "Heat." A movie that, 30 years later, features what is still considered the best shootout scene captured on celluloid. Crafted with top to bottom incredible performances, it's also crammed with innumerable cool scenes, and unforgettable lines. You're gonna love this episode cause it's got a GREAT A**!

In this special episode of the Energy Policy Now podcast, Penn climatologist Michael Mann talks with Bob Inglis, former Republican Congressman from South Carolina and current executive director of RepublicEN.org, about bridging the partisan climate divide. In a wide-ranging conversation recorded live during Energy Week at Penn 2025 at the University of Pennsylvania, Mann and Inglis discuss a conservative view on climate change, how conservative messaging on climate has evolved over time, and how common solutions might be found in an era of partisan climate divide. Inglis also offers his view on carbon pricing and strategies to reign in carbon emissions in the U.S. The conversation is moderated by Sanya Carley, faculty director of the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. Bob Inglis is a former U.S. representative for South Carolina’s 4th congressional district. He is the executive director of RepublicanEn.org at George Mason University. Bob Inglis (5:40): Yeah, so for my first six years in Congress I said that climate change is nonsense. All I knew was that Al Gore was for it. And as much as I represented Greenville-Spartanburg South Carolina, that was the end of the inquiry. Okay, pretty ignorant. But that’s the way it was my first six years. Out of Congress six years, as you just heard, doing commercial real estate law again and then, had the opportunity to run for the same seat again before, our son had just turned 18, so he was voting for the first time, and he came to me and he said, dad, I’ll vote for you. But you’re going to clean up your act on the environment. His four sisters agreed, his mother agreed. New constituency, you know. So you got to respond to those people who can change the locks on the doors to your house, you know. So, very important to respond to these people. And so that was step one of a three step metamorphosis. Step two was going to Antarctica with the [House of Representatives] Science Committee and seeing the evidence in the iceberg drillings. Step three was another Science Committee trip and, um, really a spiritual awakening which seems improbable, right, on a godless Science Committee trip, because we all know that all scientists are godless. Right? Well, apparently not. Because this Aussie climate scientist was showing me the glories of the Great Barrier Reef. I could see he was worshipping God in what he was showing me. You know, St. Francis of Assisi supposedly said “preach the gospel at all times. If necessary use words.” So Scott Heron, this Aussie climate scientist who’s now become a very dear friend was doing that. I could see it in his eyes, it was written all over his face. It was in his excitement about what he was showing me. He was clearly worshipping God. So I knew we shared a world view. Forty words were spoken.
