How do you bring your most powerful self forward from conception into pregnancy?  What ways can you allow your birth to restructure and change the world? How do you own your pregnancy into birth?  Are you and your baby ready for it? Back in the days before too much technology the women of the community came to support birth and the natural ways.   Special Guest Episode: Anasuya Yogini (Denise French) is a seasoned Doula, Birth Keeper, and Childbirth Mentor with over 30 years of experience, having attended more than 500 births. Based in South Florida, Anasuya operates Anasuya LLC, offering comprehensive services in Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach Counties.  Contact: @anasuyallc In 1989, as a 26-year-old lawyer in Campinas, Brazil, Anasuya faced a transformative birthing experience. Despite being part of a squatting position study group led by Dr. Hugo Sabatino, the hospital's interventions contradicted her natural birthing plans. This ordeal, lasting 26 hours, inspired her commitment to empowering women in childbirth. Anasuya's dedication extends beyond traditional doula services; she offers Birth Mentor Packages, preparing mothers and partners throughout prenatal, birth, and postpartum periods. Recognizing the importance of birthing rights, she initially attended many births as a contracted lawyer, defending the right to birth in peace. This unique fusion of legal expertise and birthing advocacy defines Anasuya's holistic and empowering approach, ensuring every woman can navigate childbirth with knowledge and confidence. COMING OUT: “On the documentary front, "Squeezing Orange: Exposing the C-Section Crisis" has been successfully concluded, and I've signed with RUGGED ENTERTAINMENT for distribution. The documentary is now active and available for licensing by channels. We're eagerly awaiting Title approval and preparing for platform pitches.” https://squeezingorange.com/

In April, Alison created an experimental offering in which she invited a few of her existing clients to participate in, called Elevate. During this experience, Alison facilitated the group through Toad medicine work, which is a psychedelic, paired with intense breathwork. Two of the participants, Alyssa and Francesca, share their experience working with the medicine and the container. They share the transformation they've received that's still very much unfolding for them, including relieving anxiety, experiencing a deep flow in their lives, and the development of their spirituality. They also share incredibly valuable insights around integration and for the importance of working with an aligned facilitator when working with Earth Medicine. Both Alyssa and Francesca participated in Alison's Expand and Empower programs prior to this experience, and they discuss the importance of the healing work they did in those containers prior to this experience. “My soul literally came out of my body and stretched and I was grounded and connected from above. When I was put back together again, my brain was out. It was like by the fire out of my body. For me, that's a really important conscious reminder to think less and do with intuition, do with a level of presence and consciousness without thinking. The less I think, the more productive I am in my life, in my business. So that's the state I'm always seeking to be in.”CONNECT WITH FRANCESCA Francesca is a Mindset, Spiritual and Human Design Alignment CoachShe's experienced the intense ups and downs of life and is on a mission to help women reframe their reality, rise above current circumstances and transform their lives. On this very special episode Gratitude Through Hard Times, Host Chris Schembra and his guest, Drahomíra Mandikova, celebrate meaningful connection and its power to generate profitable solutions not just for shareholders but the world at large. Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Asahi Europe & International, “Drahus” (as she is known to friends) shares with us the unique North Star principles that drive one of the world's largest alcoholic and non-alcoholic beer companies, with 19 breweries exporting to 90 markets globally. You will be intrigued to learn about the meaning, power and intentionality behind Asahi's emphasis on four simple words: “Let's have a beer.” It's about bringing awareness and building community – person to person – as the foundation to individual wellness and a sustainable “human-environmental ecosystem.” For Drahus, the first step is the critical one: Pause. Reflect on the talent, passion and ultimate purpose you bring, as well as the legacy you wish to leave. Her values-driven vision has shaped Prague-based Asahi's workplace culture and brought clarity to the company's mission statement. “We have all these goals,” says Drahus, “but to really bring them to life and enjoy the good feeling, we need to be in the present, work together and create connections to step-by-step bring about those long-term dreams.” We are on the road together, folks, and it starts with gratitude! If you'd like to learn more about Chris and his 7:47 Virtual Gratitude Experience or subscribe to our newsletter, please visit this link.Click here to hear more fascinating conversations with Fortune 500 CEOs, professional athletes and entertainerswho have shared their human stories on Gratitude Through Hard Times. KEY TOPICS:If you could thank someone who helped you through some of your darkest hours, who would that be and what were you going through? A mentor with an especially keen way of helping Drahus unhitch from unnecessary catastrophizing and impatience.A Moment of Reflection: About the importance of taking a pause to come into the present, then step into the past through reflection.2030 Legacy of Good: How Drahus and Asahi's company culture have coalesced around a mission based on a multidimensional balance of past, present and future.A Mentor's Advice: About Inner Child work and how it can reintegrate intuition and help return us to the essence of who we are and wish to be.Empathy is Everything: Why Drahus believes that the companies that actually care about the human-environmental ecosystem in which they function will bring profitable solutions to very real pain points. A win-win-win!Embracing Failure: False starts and falling short are part of a holistic learning process.Brand Purpose: About the Asahi brand's commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and community for its tens of millions of consumers.Remarkable Marketing: How Asahi has mounted campaigns that bring people together, helping them feel connected and seen on a personal, human level. The Problem of Loneliness: About the creative ways Asahi's multi-national team is trying to build bridges – old to young, left to right, across lifestyles and geographies.Asahi's Legacy Mission Includes Being Bold:Speak directly and compassionately to tough issues, like mental health.Moving 20% of the corporate portfolio into nonalcoholic beverages.Beer as a vehicle for making meaningful connections.Drahus's Personal Purpose: Making business and environmental growth sustainable. What She's Up To:Coordinating breweries across Europe to build sustainability into their production.Creating a strategy to ensure Asahi becomes carbon neutral.Midwifing a new economic model driven by profitable solutions for all stakeholders – not exclusively profit for shareholders.Action Item: All purpose-filled journeys start with a pause to reflect and re-center on your personal talents, passion and the positive impact you wish to make.Remember: When we are clear about ourselves and our purpose, the work comes into focus – and it becomes easier to shed obligations and distractions that do not serve! Why Do We Do What We Do? From intentionality flows business success and ultimately a healthier, more sustainable world.Parting Thought:Focus on what you want to know say “no” to rather than what's driving you to say “yes.”Resist the shiny things that distract your ego but don't serve your greater purpose or desire to create impact.Meaningful connection is fueled by gratitude – and makes life much, much easier. QUOTABLE“We have all these goals … but to really bring them to life and enjoy the good feeling, we need to be in the present, work together and create connections to step-by-step bring about those long-term dreams.” (Drahus) “You have to have a long-term dream so that you know where you're going.” (Drahus) “Be proud of the past so you can build the confidence and learning, but what is really important is how you bring everything to the present: Your ‘self,' your actions, reflecting on the future and also on the past.” (Drahus) “One of the biggest pain points I see in our world is the loneliness epidemic, the idea that there are a lot of people on this planet who are disconnected or do not feel seen.” (Chris) “Belonging is not about blending in. It's not about meeting people that believe in the same things that you believe in. Belonging is about showing up as you authentically are and being accepted.” (Chris) “My purpose now is really to advocate for a new era for businesses to think about the new economy, where we are moving from maximizing profit for shareholders to bringing profitable solutions for all stakeholders.” (Drahus) “Whether you're an accountant, a lawyer or CEO of a software firm, you can find your purpose and it can be as simple as creating meaningful connections with others.” (Chris) “Years from now – when we've long passed on – maybe someone will look back on our life and say, ‘They made others feel safe, seen and heard.' And if that's your purpose, it's going to be a great legacy – and lead to some good profitable growth!” (Chris) LINKS/FURTHER RESOURCES:Click here to listen to episode 225, featuring Geoff McDonald's insights into Mental health and well-being.Listen to Johann Hari's Ted talk, "Everything You Think You Know About Addiction is Wrong." ABOUT OUR GUEST:Drahomíra started her career working for the banking sector in Slovakia. We are all citizens of the Biomedical Empire, though few of us know it, and even fewer understand the extent of its power. In this book, Barbara Katz Rothman clarifies that critiques of biopower and the "medical industrial complex" have not gone far enough, and asserts that the medical industry is nothing short of an imperial power. Factors as fundamental as one's citizenship and sex identity—drivers of our access to basic goods and services—rely on approval and legitimation by biomedicine. Moreover, a vast and powerful global market has risen up around the empire, making it one of the largest economic forces in the world.  In The Biomedical Empire: Lessons Learned from the COVID Pandemic (Stanford UP, 2021), Katz Rothman shows that biomedicine has the key elements of an imperial power: economic leverage, the faith of its citizens, and governmental rule. She investigates the Western colonial underpinnings of the empire and its rapid intrusion into everyday life, focusing on the realms of birth and death. This provides her with a powerful vantage point from which to critically examine the current moment, when the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the power structures of the empire in unprecedented ways while sparking the most visible resistance it has ever seen. Barbara Katz Rothman is Professor of Sociology, at the City University of New York. I feel so privileged to be able to speak to so many women around the world about how we need to do matresence differently. Even when the conversation cannot provide ‘easy' answers. Even when we realise that, perhaps, the system is too broken. I already knew we need to honour the transition to motherhood and support women differently and this conversation only opened my eyes, yet again, to the requirements of midwifing ourselves and continuing to do it better. Listen as Amy and Rachelle talk about: Cultural understandings, immigrating as a new mother and finding yourself in a brand new surroundings when the veil lifts and how we can look around and realise how much we desire more. How our programming and conditioning can get potentised by the intensity of birth and how that can affect our birth experience. Tuning into how mothers really feel, because as mothers we carry life and we provide an important aspect for humanity's health. Taking responsibility and being in a good way with our power, in order to exalt and uplift others – especially within a healthcare practitioner environment. Rachelle embraces the original meaning of the word ‘midwife,' which is caretaker of the people's health from ‘womb to tomb' and has several ways to connect with her. She has a free ebook: The Five Cross-Cultural Prescriptions of Postpartum WELLNESS https://www.innatetraditions.com/download-free-ebook (https://www.innatetraditions.com/download-free-ebook) and a free class: Rites of Passage & The Postpartum Period https://www.innatetraditions.com/replay-free-class-rites-of-passage (https://www.innatetraditions.com/replay-free-class-rites-of-passage) If you would like a deeper understanding of matresence and how we support women differently, Mama Rising facilitator training opens just once a year. “Most people live their lives, most people go to their graves, with their music still inside them.” As a master voice coach, author, speaker, singer and songwriter, Barbara McAfee describes her work of more than 25 years as “midwiving voices across thresholds.” Whether it is an individual seeking to express his/her deepest truth, or a group looking to embrace its own power, Barbara guides them on an intimate journey to find their unique voice, sound by primal sound.  As Barbara says, “Your voice is how you get the gift inside of you out. Nothing much happens in the world until someone gives it voice.” That’s why the words “voice” and “vocation” share a common Latin root (meaning to “call, invoke or name”), she says. Her work merges lessons from 12 years in organization development with the transformative power of sound, aiming to foster awareness of unconscious vocal habits we carry that interfere with us doing our best work.  Barbara believes that the gifts uniquely expressed through our voices are not ours alone, but part of a shared destiny across humanity. So when individual voices are more fully and truthfully expressed, communities become stronger as well.  Barbara’s journey with voice began in her 20’s, when she found herself, while in a voice workshop, introduced to the full potential of her singing voice. As the range of her voice expanded, so did her life, and the stage fear that had permeated her identity up until that point as an amateur theater and musical performer gradually dissolved. Not only did Barbara feel her soul healing, it was as if the healing transcended the boundaries of time, reaching across past generations. Having experienced the healing power of a fully expressed voice, she went on to incorporate additional aspects of Jungian philosophy and yoga to develop a five-elemental approach to voice -- fire, air, metal, wood, water -- in order to help others experience the full range of their aliveness, too.  As an oral tradition song leader of many decades, Barbara uses chants and poems to open groups of people to the direct experience of mystery and wonder, as well as the power of human connection. She has witnessed how, when neither script nor leader is present, individual voices inevitably harmonize into a coherent whole. She demonstrated this in her TEDx talk where, in just under 10 minutes, Barbara catalysed the audience (numbering in the hundreds) to sing the words of the Sufi master Hafiz, discovering their innate collective wisdom.  Beyond the emergence of aliveness, Barbara also serves as a midwife to those on the edge of life. As the founder of Morning Star Singers, a volunteer hospice choir in the Twin Cities, Barbara and singers from all walks of life and professions sing songs of comfort and healing for those in the last few months, hours and minutes of their lives. Compassionately holding space for whatever is meant to unfold, Morning Star Singers offer the simple gift of presence, beauty, and meaning to those “who are often experiencing professionals and family members ‘doing things to them’.” Her book Full Voice: The Art and Practice of Vocal Presence is based on her 25+ years as a voice coach supporting people from many professions to find their voice, whatever that means to them. Barbara invites readers to reflect on questions such as: Are you willing to be alive? For what did we trade our raw messy human voices? What is so frightening about the possibility of authentic expression? What might be more important and interesting than your fears? The book concludes with Barbara’s original song “Brain Rats” where, with healing humor, she speaks to the common human foible of ruminating on “wicked thoughts that prove my every flaw.” Barbara has produced eight CDs of mostly original music. She lives up the street from the wild and scenic St Croix River in St Croix Falls, Wisconsin. Please join us in conversation with this midwife of voices, and accept her invitation to find and express your own.

Let's be honest: The body of Christ is traumatized, and so are nearly all the people who make it up, and this makes it really hard for us to work together across systemic power differences. What might the disability justice movement have to teach us, in light of this reality, about what it means to "come to maturity to the full measure of the stature of Christ"?

Everyone is a facilitator, whether consciously or unconsciously. In our relationships at all levels - professionally and personally - we are woven into, affected by, and affecting a web of relations. In this episode, I sit down with my dear brother, co-groover, and facilitator from Melbourne, Henry Fowkes. We explore the nuanced and little-spoken-of insights into facilitation and group-work. In this, we cover the terrain of embodied attunement, integrating authenticity and authority, the role of the body and its wisdom within facilitation. Henry is one full of cackles, stories packed with humility, and a genuine zest for discovery. Here we were, sitting in my bedroom, microphone listening in, sharing a brotherly, down-to-earth, and mutually curious conversation that we trust you'll take something for your medicine bag from. --Show-notes and links hereConnect with Al on InstagramConnect with Al on FacebookMusic by RhoneSupport the show (https://aljeffery.com/podcast/)

Editors hold a hidden yet sacred role in the publishing world. As managing editor of The Bitter Southerner, writer Josina Guess works closely with storytellers to hone their work. At times she acts as midwife to writers, helping form narratives on difficult topics like domestic violence and racism.  Before she became an editor, Josina attended three writing workshops at the Collegeville Institute, including Writing to Change the World led by Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove in 2014, Revision, Christian Spirituality, and the Writing Life led by Lauren Winner in 2017, and Exploring Identity and (Dis)belonging through the Personal Essay led by Enuma Okoro in 2019. In this interview, Josina discusses her work as an editor, as well as her own writing on themes of race, violence, and family. Josina's posture as an activist, writer, and editor is rooted in curiosity and empathy. From her home in rural Georgia, she shares wisdom from acting and storytelling within a particular community, which she believes is the best way writers can change the world.

"I serve a vision of a world where all people are free."Rev. Dr. Chris Davies is prophetic in her words; guiding us to how we can live into a world that is abundant for all. She speaks of a Christianity that is "attentive to a liberatory message of Gospel" and reminds us that God is bigger and wider than the structures we have built to contain God. We serve God, we serve Christ, not the institution of "church." Our faith is bigger and wider than the institution, and when the institution isn't serving God faithfully, isn't living into and up to that liberatory Gospel, then we are called into reformation. That is why Rev. Davies feels that part of her call is to be a midwife for formation. We are called, as Rev. Davies says, to co-create alongisde God a world that is more just, more equitable, and in alignment with God's kin-dom here on earth.Listen in as Pastors Chris and Kelsey dive into how we as Christians can be a part of building a legacy of faith that will lead to a better, more abundant world for all.Rev. Dr. Chris S. Davies (she/her) is a Connecticut, US native and a Cleveland transplant and a wandering Irish Rover at heart. She loves the church deeply, and is committed to finding ways to continue to bring the gospel into the world. She attended Smith College for her undergrad work and Andover Newton for both a Masters of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry. Chris is a queer femme, an urban farmer and beekeeper, and a creative networker of communities. She is passionate about justice and Jesus, and is the founder and curator of the Queer Clergy Trading Cards, a project bringing visibility to queer clergy, using humor and irreverence to help change the conversation highlighting the common awe (and absurdities) in faith work. You can follow the Facebook page for that project here. Chris lives in Cleveland, OH, where she is still seeking community and continuing to learn in faith and live justly, serving Christ in all things. Jen Chien, who works as an editor at Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting, compares it to being a midwife: Editors help people give birth to their projects and make sure they come to life. In this session from the 2019 Third Coast Conference, Jen Chien laid out what it takes to be a great editor, from the art of nurturing creativity in the people you work with to hands-on project management tips to keep the project moving. Palliative care does not equal dying. With 25 years as a palliative care physician, Dr. Michael Barbato has spent a lot of time helping people understand that palliative care can actually improve the quality of life. The focus is on providing relief of pain and stress caused by serious illness. Being in this specialty area, Dr. Barbato has spent countless hours at the bedside of the dying. And what he has seen and learned from them fascinates him. And has taught him empathy and compassion. He and his wife, Ann, teach others how to be at the bedside of the dying. Through their midwifing death course, they teach healthcare professionals and laypeople how to care for both the living and the dying. By helping them acknowledge their own beliefs and fears, they can then sit with the dying without judgement, and be present. Michael believes that end of life visions and dreams can be healing messages not only to the dying, but family members as well. He and Ann teach others how to be present with quality; treating death as a natural phenomenon. And helping providers learn to ask non-clinical questions, to help the dying and their families through the process. I also opened up about some of my favorite parts of the Experience - the most poignant, the most surprising, the highs and lows as well as shed light on some of the mysteries about how I do what I do.Here are a few highlights: 6:23 Appreciating the vastness of The Experience 11:58 A beacon of what is possible in the New ParadigmMy goosebump moments: 15:10 Ajaya's Soul Retrieval 19:09 Elayne's rebirth into Sacred Support 20:33 Renee ending her Lineage of Sacrifice and Suffering 21:46 Ali Warrioring her way to vulnerability and release (with orgasmic results!)WCUE Medicine for the Collective: 24:28 Midwifing the New Age 28:36 The Universe is holding its breath, waiting for us to remember 32:21 My negativity binge post WCUEMagik: 45:11 The definition of Magik 46:17 Returning to the New/Old ways of the Feminine 54:08 Learning to speak "the language of the Universe" 57:11 What is the difference between the Soul and Essence? So much to integrate after this Experience of remembering who we are, soul level healings, and opening to the truth and freedom that is our birthright.
