A remarkable convergence of events led to the revival of Friendship Lodge No. 50 in Northfield, Minnesota. A Mason in Red Wing, Minnesota started an educational program for his Masonic lodge and then reached out to the Odd Fellows to request them give a presentation about Odd Fellowship. Four of the Masons present decided to check out Odd Fellowship. One person turned to Reddit and podcasts (like ours and Modern Goat Rider) to do some research before joining a group. The lodge in Northfield dropped down to the remaining five members. When all of that came together, the new members were excited to join the lodge which needed them and now the lodge is thriving. Through the efforts of an active, engaged Grand Lodge and PGM David "Ace" Adams, all of the energy was channeled into reviving a historic lodge. This episode's Shoutout goes to another revived Encampment, this time Green Mountain Encampment #3 of Burlington, Vermont. In the Odd Podge, Mike announces that he has been asked to serve as Sovereign Grand Chaplain for Gerry Workman, Ainslie shares the news about his new van which he used to drive a group to a recent Degree Day in Illinois, Nick lets us know that he's included Odd Fellowship on his blog, Ace gives us a preview of his efforts to use online registration for his Degree Weekend, Sunny expresses gratitude for the older, long-time members who have kept Odd Fellowship alive, Gary offers his respect for the traditions and heritage of Odd Fellowship, and Toby talks about the upcoming Northwest Odd Fellow and Rebekah Association Meeting in Idaho in April.
March of the Governors, Governor #33 Wendell Anderson (Series Podcast #35) Before an ignominious electoral end, Wendell “Wendy” Anderson was one of Minnesota's most significant and popular governors. Born and raised on St. Paul's East Side, he had been an Olympic hockey player and a twelve-year legislative veteran when elected governor in 1970 at the age of thirty-seven. In his first term, Anderson successfully encouraged legislative passage of landmark open government, environmental, labor and other forward-looking laws. Most importantly, he campaigned and got passed a sweeping change in how K-12 education in the state was funded—later termed the “Minnesota Miracle.” For his efforts, Anderson was reelected in 1974 with 63 percent of the vote, carrying every county in the state. However, four years later, as a consequence of his self-appointment to that body, voters chose rival Rudy Boschwitz over him for the US Senate by a 56-40-percent margin, effectively ending his political career. Anderson later practiced law, was a television political commentator and served on the University of Minnesota's Board of Regents. He died in 2016.
Hank Long from Alpha News joins to discuss several stories he is working on plus discussions of Trump focusing some of his energy right here in the state of Minnesota.

Please become a sustaining member or make a one time donation at LauraFlanders.org/donate No time to get you links embedded but here's the text. Audio's transferring. Check for typos. I've been feeling kinda dizzy. It's being called the Minnesota miracle, but Minnesota's historic legislative session was no act of god. Democrats in Minnesota wrote abortion rights into law and passed paid family and medical leave; they funded free breakfast and lunch for all k-12 students and passed protections for transgender people. Going forward, undocumented people will be able to get drivers' licenses and people released from prison or jail will be able to vote. There's a one-time tax rebate, and a tax credit aimed at low income parents and a $1 billion investment in affordable housing including for rental assistance. Minnesotans passed stronger protections for workers seeking to unionize, banned conversion therapy for LGBTQ people and set a date by which the electric grid has to be carbon free. They tightened gun laws, loosened marijuana regs, and sent more money to nursing homes. That list's probably still incomplete. In a tweet Barack Obama commented: “If you need a reminder that elections have consequences, check out what's happening in Minnesota.” The stunning session is certainly proof that voting matters. The Democratic Farmers and Labor Party (DFL) owed its trifecta power this session to midterm elections in which they won not just the Governor's mansion, but also majorities in both houses thanks to a one-vote majority in the state Senate and narrow victories by a handful of candidates, one of whom won by just 321 votes. But voting alone won't do it. As the beloved late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone knew, legislative action doesn't happen without massive, ongoing organizing by strong coalitions. In this case, long time labor, environmental and social justice activists worked in coalition, the Wellstone way, sometimes for years. Minnesotans for Paid Family Medical Leave for example —a coalition of 70 labor, faith, and community groups—set their sights and worked to rally support for what they won this year for as much as a decade. And not all majorities matter. Minnesota Democrats have held majorities before, but acted cautiously -- carefully conducting partisan calculus -- in the style of if you don't mind me saying - Obama. Cautionary politics lost them the majority a decade ago. It's taken that long to reboot. In other words, Democrats in Minnesota learned the lesson that Democrats nationally should have learned from the Sen. Mansion experience Partisanship's nice but principles are better. Finally, Minnesota Democrats didn't just win political capital. They spent it, and they spent it in a bold way, with time to have an impact on real people's lives before the next elections to the Governor's office or the state Senate. There's more to be learned from the Minnesota story. Let's hope some learn it. But the biggest takeaway? Suffice to say, there are no miracles in politics. You can catch Laura's conversation with activists in Texas about how they're surviving abortion bans and trumped up trans laws this time on the Laura Flanders Show on PBS stations, community radio stations and as a podcast or online at Lauraflanders.org.@GRITlaura@TheLFShowThe TV & radio show where the people who say it can't be done take a backseat to the people who are doing it! Minnesota recently finished a state legislative session for the ages. Democratic control of state government for the first time in a decade, combined with a historic budget surplus, led to the adoption of transformative investments and policies in most every area of government. Abby interviews co-host and first-term State Representative Larry Kraft about the recently completed session and gets a run down of some of the key new climate policies that were passed into law.ResourcesGov Walz signs bill on 100% Clean Energy by 2040Passed MN Climate, Energy, & Environment budget bill Passed MN Transportation budget billObama praises MN accomplishmentsLarry's speech on the House floor about the Energy & Environment budget bill

Each week Megan is asking the Final Rose Tarot cards what we can expect from this week's episode. This week's card is the Queen of Mirrors, which is called “The Bitch” - and it describes Danielle to a tee - she takes no shit and can read you to filth, but is really just a softy. This week, Michelle and the men fly to the land of ten thousand lakes, the land that Danielle loves, the home of the Vikings-- Minnesota! We see two one-on-one dates and one group date. Joe gets a Minneapolis themed date- they throw out a first pitch at a Twins game and see Michelle's high school. Joe opens up about life after basketball and the struggles he faced with that. (CONTENT WARNING: DEPRESSION/SUICIDE). The group date is themed after the Vikings and there are too many visible neck veins for Megan. Nayte gets a lake themed date on Lake Minnetonka, with two of Michelle's besties. Throughout this whole episode we see Chris S. on some whiny white boy shit and we hate it; he even has the audacity to interrupt Michelle's date with Nayte, how rude! This week for our BIPOC highlight, we are highlighting and saying goodbye, our main squeeze who did not get the airtime he deserved, Leroy Arthur (IG Handle). Leroy is a biomedical PhD student, who was born in Italy to Ghanaian parents, who emigrated to the U.S. to live the American dream. Leroy says that when he dates, he dates with intention. He does not like to gamble, with money or hearts, but does love breakfast in bed. Leroy, we will miss your style and face, hope to see you on BIP! Fifty years ago this month, then-DFL Governor Wendell Anderson worked with the conservative-controlled Minnesota Legislature to pass significant fiscal policies that transformed the state's educational system. Though the process required the longest special session in the state's history, the bipartisan effort and the commitment to economic and social equality became known as the “Minnesota Miracle.” We take a look at this monumental time in Minnesota's history and revisit the iconic 1973 Time magazine cover where Minnesota became nationally known as “the state that works.” In today's bitterly partisan political atmosphere, one wonders if a similar miracle could possibly come together again. On this episode of Dialogue Minnesota, we discuss Governor Wendell Anderson's legacy, the Minnesota Miracle and what has happened to the miracle in the ensuing decades. Our guest is Tom Berg, a Minneapolis attorney who served as a state legislator from 1971 through 1978. He is the author of the book Minnesota's Miracle: Learning From the Government That Worked. We spoke with him in 2016 shortly after the book was published.

Kyle talks about the impending start of training camp and the issues posed by the pandemic, acknowledging that if a player were to behave recklessly and spread the virus among teammates, it would cause a major problem in the locker room. He breaks down the financial staredown he had with the Vikings before the 2019 season and the accompanying trade rumors--leading to an amusing assessment of teammate Adam Thielen’s sideline confrontation with Bill Belichick. After Natalie’s R-rated story about her brusque introduction to former Washington tight end Chris Cooley, Kyle breaks down his favorite players at the position, many of whom seem to have a screw loose. He then revisits his epic catch against the Saints last January and the fear that it would be overturned via replay review--and the ensuing imbroglio over the gloves he wore in that playoff victory, and how they ended up on eBay. After a very serious discussion about George Floyd’s death and how it galvanized his community and team, Kyle addresses his lack of productivity in 2019 and talks about how he channeled his frustration into something positive. Finally, after a conversational detour that pinpoints the NFL’s doppelganger for beloved ‘Bad Santa’ character Thurman Merman, Kyle spends several minutes attempting to answer the most important question of all: Which of his current or former teammates was Lizzo singing about? The playoffs are here and there are so may storylines circling the NFL. The Saints are looking to avenge the loss from the Minnesota Miracle two years ago. JJ Watt is back to help Deshaun push the Texans past the 1st round. Will this be Brady's last game for the Patriots? How will Carson Wentz perform in the playoffs? So much drama in 4 games
We're two for two in 2018 when it comes to podcasting and it snowing in Virginia Beach. Let's hope this trend doesn't continue. This week we talk about the Minnesota Miracle, the Jags chances of knocking Brady off the hill, the UFC and Bellator going head to head, and five movie reviews including the Post and I, Tonya.
Did you see the Minnesota Miracle?? Today I chat about the parallels between the game and real life. You train. You prepare. You put your heart and soul into it. You pull ahead of your opponent (life) and start to feel confident. A few mistakes creep in (some very costly) but you stay confident in your ability and the ability of those who you surround yourself with (family, friends, co-workers, neighbors). You stay focused on your goal and you’re able to look at your teammates and know that they are there for you and pushing you to your best. You come close again but the opponent scores and you start to wonder if it will happen as you look at the time on the clock go down. But you never give up and you throw that pass and it is run down the field as the buzzer goes off for a game winner. Keep your belief high, your confidence growing, and never ever give up before the final buzzer. Review(s): The Commuter, The Post, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Opening and Closing Song: I Feel Good by James Brown Yes, the title is a reference to the Minnesota Vikings new lord and savior, Stefon Diggs. Blasphemy aside I do talk about the Minneapolis or Minnesota Miracle (trademark probably pending) to start things off. Following that is my reviews as mentioned above in that order. After that is the Box Office Report (estimates, we won't have actuals until Tuesday) and the news. Honestly I almost *almost* want to apologize about the news, but I suppose there are better weeks than others and this just happens to be one of the weaker news weeks. Well I think I've padded out the description long enough so enjoy the show!
