This allowed the CEO to focus on their strengths and enabled the company to scale effectively.Focus on Mental Health: The brand's commitment to mental health has been a core part of its mission from the start. They recognize the unique challenges that men face in seeking and receiving mental health support. They've integrated physical activity with group therapy sessions to create a supportive community.Innovation and Technology: The company embraces technology as an enabler and is particularly interested in advancements related to customer data, retail analytics, and AI-driven customer service enhancements. Nate Checketts, CEO and co-founder of men's apparel and activewear brand Rhone, has mastered the art of building a premium brand at a comfortable pace. Rhone, Checketts' 8-year-old brand based in Connecticut, has gone through its fair share of growing pains. Checketts owes its ability to power through the tough times to quality products and smart strategies.  "Part of the ethos and emphasis of Rhone has always been marrying aesthetic and function," Checketts said on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. Activewear, or as the brand categorizes it "performance lifestyle," has been a key driver of Rhone's business. The category performed incredibly well in 2019, but like every other brand, Rhone was not prepared for the year that followed. "[The year] 2020 was an enormous challenge for us because the interest swung into active and lounge[wear], and we could not keep those products in stock. We were chasing inventory," Checketts said. "Not only [were we] not able to get enough inventory to keep up with demand in a typical calendar year, but now, you have supply chain challenges and countries shutting down, too." Checketts said the sudden increase in demand and new challenges the team faced helped shape Rhone's business strategy from there. "As we thought about 2021, we had to start making calculated decisions as to when we thought lifestyle [apparel] was going to come back," Checketts said.

In 2002, President James E. Faust gave a talk during the priesthood session of general conference. He said, “Your future may not hold fame or fortune, but it can be something far more lasting and fulfilling. Remember that what we do in life echoes in eternity.” Twelve years later in 2014, Nate Checketts co-founded Rhone Apparel, an activewear company for men. He hoped that positive messages on men's apparel could help shape the future of the little men he and his wife, Dayna, are raising. So he began adding messages on the inside of his company's clothes, including this quote by President Faust. On today's episode, we talk with Nate and Dayna about why they are passionate about creating a brand that teaches correct principles. "It is emotionally exhausting to try and decide whether or not you are going to serve in the church, whether or not you're going to read your scriptures that night, whether or not you're going to say a prayer. ...It is so much easier to just be fully committed to the Lord." They are focused on connecting with thought leaders and industry experts where they discuss what they’re working on, some of the strategies they’ve deployed during this time, how they’ve shifted their mindset and most importantly how they’re keeping themselves as well as the people around them motivated. This episode featured Nate Checketts, the founder of Rhone where they discussed the Brands x better initiative that he launched and the criteria for brands to get involved. He learned early on that "the cheerleader approach" wasn’t the right approach. “By giving a false sense of optimism, then I lose credibility as a leader.” They had to make changes and adapt based on the current state of affairs. His immediate response was "sitting back and waiting for someone else to solve these problems forces us to give up the ability to do good." They needed to come from a place of “We got this. Let’s lock arms and find ways to lean on each other” We discussed Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People where relationships are like emotional bank accounts. You make deposits and you make withdrawals. "My hope is that I made enough deposits into our collective emotional bank accounts that it would keep our relationship balance in the positive." He left us with a few challenges: Do your own self analysis. Think about what motivates you. Write down a list of your favorite moments that have happened in your life and when you’re feeling down, pull out that list and think about how it lifts you “life’s greatest moments list” Get to bed early (not 8 hours of sleep) early to bed and early to rise Remember to smile, tell your body to show you’re happy Find a small piece of poetry and memorize it. When I’m having a difficult moment, those words come into my mind. The content you choose to put into your brain will be with you when you’re challenged. Pick a poem that you love and spend time memorizing it and let those words sink into your mind. Rhone CEO Nate Checketts said his company "saw the writing on the wall really quickly" in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. Companies like his men’s activewear brand would soon be bloated with inventory and feel the pressure to boost e-commerce promotions. "If everybody's getting promotional all at once, that's going to shift customer demand away from us if we're continuing to operate at full price," Checketts said. "So I challenged our team in 24 hours to get a promotion ready and to be ready to effectively communicate to the customers about what steps and actions we were taking." That plan included an email newsletter that's actually useful to readers instead of just being a distress call -- and the rare discount on Rhone products. "We won't go deep, but you will see brands that will have to," Checketts said. "In some cases it might act as a clearing house to get non-serious players out, and that will present some opportunities. I do think that brands that I won't name but leaned so heavily into retail before they were really ready for it are in a lot of pain now," he added. Even on Rhone's e-commerce front, he said, "there's definitely been a demand impact, no question." Checketts talked about leadership values, what brick-and-mortar landlords should keep in mind and how he's staying honest with his employees.

About this episode This week's featured founder is an entrepreneur who was miserable in his career with the NFL and decided it was time to create a brand that matters. Meet Nate Checketts, co-founder and CEO of Rhone. Rhone is an activewear brand specifically for men. You may immediately associate Lululemon as a women's brand. Well, that is what Rhone is for men. Apparel is an incredibly hard industry, and what makes Nate's story so fascinating is that he is not a fashion-forward person, nor does he have a long career in the apparel logistics, or any logistics business. So, are you still wondering why Nate left the NFL to start a men's activewear brand? Of course, we unpack that part of his story in this episode. But, like every episode, we need to start at the beginning to understand how someone might actually find themselves unhappy working for an icon of a brand like the NFL. Here is Nate Checketts' startup story. In this episode, you'll hear Nate starts our conversation with a profound insight: "We are so easily attached to people's successes that we discount what challenges they're going through or what failures they have." We jump into the Wayback machine and discuss Nate's childhood, including his early desire to be an inventor and how he viewed his father, who was the youngest General Manager in NBA history. How he had no clue what we wanted to do after high school, but he did know that he wanted to prove that he could be successful on his own The story of how Nate wrote a business plan about connecting text messaging to restaurants for people to order; long before he graduated from college. How he pivoted and started his first venture revolving around the sports stadium model. While working for the NFL (which would be a dream job for most) Nate Checketts, CEO & Co-Founder of Rhone, saw an opportunity. He noticed that almost all of the innovation that was happening in activewear space was happening on the women's side of the business. So after a discussion with his co-founder and some research, he decided that they would launch their apparel brand. There was just one small challenge, they knew nothing about fashion or eCommerce or really anything about building a brand from the ground up. But what's a small problem like that to an entrepreneur?   In part 1 of this insightful episode, Nate discusses Why they chose to be digitally native from the beginning, How & what he learned about making the best products possible, Why every company needs to be a product company at its' core, Why if you don't create great products you don't deserve to exist, The three Mega Trends that they used to grow their brand, What were their mistakes, What they did right, Why it's important not to be complacent, Why email is their number one channel by far, How it's dangerous for a startup to live in an echo chamber and so much more.    Join us while Ramon Vela interviews Nate while he shares the inside story of a brand. Nate Checketts is the co-founder and CEO of Rhone, a men’s performance lifestyle company founded in 2014. Prior to Rhone, Nate worked for and consulted with some of the biggest technology and entertainment properties in the world including Cisco, the NFL, Legends, FanVision, and Sport Radar. In this episode, Nate joins Pat and Posh to share his story of growing up in Connecticut and always having an entrepreneurial bug in him. His father was a successful business executive in the world of sports (former GM of the Utah Jazz and CEO of NBA International) and Nate always felt pressure to be a success as well, in his own way. While in college, he started a technology company which was a mobile app that allowed fans in a stadium to order food directly from their seats, and the company was sold the San Francisco 49ers after 3 years. While selling a company in your mid-twenties may cause people to believe you’ve reached a point of massive success, Nate ultimately felt like a failure. Things just hadn’t worked out the way he had planned and he was eager for more. After a brief stint working for the NFL, Nate left his job to launch Rhone. He had seen a gap in the men’s activewear and lifestyle category and was on a mission to create a brand that made an impact. He also noticed that the behavior of men was changing when it came to their relationship with clothing, and he was compelled to do something about it.Today, Rhone is one of the fastest-growing brands in the activewear category and is the #1 men’s brand sold at Equinox and Peloton.During this conversation, Nate also sheds light on the valuable business lessons he’s learned throughout his career, what takes an idea from zero to one, the pros and cons of being an entrepreneur, fundraising, “athleisure” vs. performance lifestyle, and the challenges as well as benefits of Ecommerce vs. Retail.SUBSCRIBE TO TFH NEWSLETTER & STAY UPDATED > http://bit.ly/tfh-newsletterFOLLOW TFH ON INSTAGRAM > http://www.instagram.com/thefounderhourFOLLOW TFH ON TWITTER > http://www.twitter.com/thefounderhourINTERESTED IN BECOMING A SPONSOR? Making Marketing
Rhone's Nate Checketts: DTC is a misnomer

Making Marketing

Working at the NFL gave Rhone CEO Nate Checketts a pretty good lay of the land as far as men's activewear went. And what he saw was a big hole in the supply-side of the market. "Lululemon was really leading the charge" in marketing premium workout clothes to women, he said. "And then you had all of these brands that were there going after the same customer." But no one seemed to be doing that for men. "If you were to look at the men's side -- at, call it a 40% price premium to the Nike, Under Armour, Reebok, Adidas of the world -- it was crickets. It was nobody." So Checketts co-founded Rhone, a clothing company meant to give guys threads that they can wear at the gym, in social settings or often both. In this week’s episode of Making Marketing, Checketts talked about just how far back the DTC model goes, why it's easier than ever to go small (but harder than ever to go big) and the tough standards venture capitalists often judge brands by.

Growing up in a big family in the North-East USA, Nate Checketts always knew he wanted to create something innovative, but back then there wasn't even a word being used for he wanted to do. He first thought he might be an inventor, but it was clear from pushing around his red-cart lemonade stand from an early age, that he also loved to sell. He'd sell anything if he could. It was inevitable he'd soon be walking the path of entrepreneurship. He tinkered around with a few failing ideas on the side of his full time job running sponsorship strategies for the NFL. One day his regular practice of journaling shed some deep understanding of what he had to do in life. While not feeling fulfilled in his role, he wrote;   “I want to lead a company that really matters, side note - that doesn't necessarily mean I have to cure cancer”   At the same time, a Lululemon christmas present from mom - for all the family, triggered an idea; men are at a point of identity crisis right now, when it comes wearing clothes that make you feel good. This same kind of approach that was working predominantly in female branding, could be marketed at guys too. He and a few family members (having received a gift they weren't too thrilled about) spotted the gap in the market for great quality activewear specifically for men. And NOT just a brand that is targeted purely at the athletic type, but one that could speak to every normal guy out there. The concept became even deeper when they decided to target men who want to achieve more, dads wishing to be better parents, guys open to self growth, men wishing to find purpose and work harder. Not just how good you are crossfit or how many miles you could run. They crafted something that was missing, clothes that are as comfortable as sweatpants but smart enough to wear on Wall Street.   “Everyone should feel tall, proud, and inspired, that's when we decided to innovate, educate and inform our community that we was building. We needed to speak to the individual, other brands just weren't”   Story telling became a big part of their business startup using instagram and other social media platforms, NOT the little things like logo, name and email address, all these things that didn't really mean much. They stood by a unique ethos; If all your clothes in the closet are clean, which ones are you picking out first - They wanted to be that brand!   Here's what we get into on this episode. Taking the risk of dropping out of your full time job for something that is uncertain Not waiting on the idea or product being perfect before starting How two near fatal incidents nearly put the breaks on Rhone Turning what could have been a disaster into 100% commitment. The importance of focus Viewing yourself as unemployable Hiring people as crazy as yourself Getting comfortable with chaos The differences between seed investment and bootstrapping Being proud of what you do and letting the world see it   “To be successful you need have a succession of great years, To have great years you have to think about how you can have great days, you can do that with the 5-minute journal” Hope you enjoyed this week's episode with Nate Checketts , you can find out more about him here: Rhone.com Twitter Linked in Instagram   Find books and resources mentioned here: 4-Hour Work Week - Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich by Timothy Ferriss Let My People Go Surfing - The Education of a Reluctant Businessman by Yvon Chouinard Convertible Note  - Wikipedia description Produced by Jason Sanderson - Podcast Tech Full show notes: https://www.ikonns.com/podcast/episode18

Nate Checketts founded Rhone, a premium active men’s apparel company that makes honestly the best workout gear in the world. I say that not as Nate’s friend - I say that as a repeat customer. What makes this episode special is some of the vulnerability that Nate shares about the challenges of his journey, including a literal life changing moment where he almost died due to his type 1 diabetes and how he prioritizes family. I also loved hearing how his leadership team kicks off their weekly meeting talking about their company principles on a rotating basis. I know you will enjoy this conversation, as it is a really unique view on two founders on parallel roller coasters.

Nate Checketts grew up in a prominent sports family. His father Dave was the President of The NY Knicks and MSG. We could’ve talked sports for hours. He’s also got a brother who’s a sports talk host so it comes naturally. But rather, what we got into was his close, loving and respectful relationship with his family and how he was raised with chores, responsibilities and having to earn and learn for himself along the way. An entrepreneur from his early teen years starting a camp at age 13, collecting golf balls and re-selling them he’s resigned to the notion that entrepreneurship is his path and that creating, building and cultivating a business and brand is his calling. That brand is RHONE, a high end activewear brand for men. Founded in 2014, the company launched as an online retailer only. In 2015, it went out to retail in such places as Nordstrom and Equinox. It has continued to grow into one of the premier brands in a highly competitive marketplace. Nate is a husband, father and teacher, volunteering his time to teach high school kids during the week. He’s also one of the most structured planners I’ve had on the show. Hearing about his productivity planner and schedule was eye opening. His perspective on flow and living his days with intention really hit home. Enjoyed this conversation immensely and look forward to sporting RHONE at this year’s Decathlon and supporting the brand and Nate as they grow

Function. Fashion. Very rarely do the two come hand-in-hand, especially in the athletic apparel industry. Nate Checketts sought to bridge this gap by creating a clothing line that went the extra mile again and again because he knew that was exactly the type of person who would wear it. His company, Rhone, is the product of a lifetime of entrepreneurial spirit, Nate shares with us his story of the lessons learned, mistakes made and what exactly it takes in order to successfully step out on your own and serve a need (and make it a thriving business at the same time.) Rhone is for every man. Like their website says, "Whether running errands, jumping on a flight, or pushing hard in the gym, Rhone feels good, looks good, performs better. Ultimately we want to capture that which inspires all of us. Our belief is we can push each other and our product forward each day." And they even have "#foreverforward" as their driving hashtag, how perfect is that?!
