Episode 66 shared by Tegan in Queensland. This episode unfortunately, is a roller coaster & I'm so grateful to Tegan for sharing her story. It's difficult to summarise Tegan's story into a quick intro, but how's this - after being accepted and excluded from the local publicly funded program MULTIPLE times in her pregnancy with her second baby, Tegan made the decision to birth at home, unassisted. We talk about so much in this episode too, like GBS diagnoses, antibiotics, gut health, breastfeeding, Cervical ectropion and more. Send us a textIn this week's episode, I am chatting with Leonie Rainbird Savin who is sharing her experience of wild pregnancy with her 4th child. She describes how different this pregnancy was in comparison to the other 3, and how as it progressed, she began to feel instinctively that she may end up needing medical intervention regarding the birth. In the end, Leonie became unwell and went into hospital to seek care and discovered that she was carrying two babies. In today's episode she shares about her decision of having an unassisted birth due to living in an area that didn't have home birth as an option through the regional hospital and also no independent home birth midwives. She sought out a doula and educated herself enough to make the decision to birth with just her partner and her chosen support team at home. What do you do when your care providers drop you and tell you to change your birth plan, at 35 weeks? This is the exact circumstance that Adina Rivers found herself in during her second pregnancy. Originally planning for a home birth with a midwife, Adina was now facing not only her midwife releasing her from her care, but no other midwife in her area in Bali would take her. Virtually everyone was telling her that she had to have a hospital birth. “F*** that,” was her basic response. She told her partner Oliver, “we're going to do it at home.” Adina walks us through her journey into birth, going back 10 years ago to the birth of her son, to how she makes her choices from her intuition and feeling. Adina's story is one that emphasizes the opportunity we have to TRUST our bodies and birth. And how sometimes challenges and unforeseen circumstances are exactly the catalysts we need to get out of the way and let divine plans unfold. Things we talk about in this episode: birth center birth in Berlin, Germany, free/unassisted birth in Bali, being dropped by care providers, trusting in your body, how birth and nature are connected, trusting intuition Links: Adina's Website: https://adinarivers.com/ Adina's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adinariversofficial/ Doing It At Home book on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3vJcPmU DIAH website: https://www.diahpodcast.com/ Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/3jKtIYv DIAH Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doingitathome/ DIAH YouTube: https://bit.ly/3pzuzQC DIAH Store: https://yoursuccessfulhomebirth.com/ DIAH Merch: https://bit.ly/3qhwgAe Give Back to DIAH: https://bit.ly/3qgm4r9

If you’re curious about freebirth
In this episode I announce my pregnancy! I talk about my choice to birth unassisted and I offer some statistics and insight to the medical birthing system. I want to just say this topic is HUGE. This episode is quick overview of what unassisted birth means, what my current birth plan looks like this far, my reasons for choosing this way to birth and some statistics and insights into the medical birthing system in the US in the last 120 years. Most of these statistics I received from the documentary "The Business of Being Born." you can find all of the sources for these online. This was something I wanted to include for some insight, however, my reason for choosing unassisted birth has little to do with any statistic and more to do with my innate trust in my body, my ancestry, my intuition, and my baby. Natural Birth, Pregnancy, and labor may be one of the highest initiations as a woman in their lifetime, that is, if they choose the path of motherhood. I will continue to discuss, educate and empower woman in their choice to birth however they choose. And frankly, be damned, if the medical system has any say over this. We as women are taking back birth, and it is so beautiful to witness! In this episode, we talk with Elizabeth Davis, midwife, reproductive health care specialist, educator, and consultant. She is also the author of Heart & Hands: A Midwife's Guide to Pregnancy & Birth (https://elizabethdavis.com/books/). She tells us about her first experiences with birth, including her being present at an unassisted birth, as well as her traumatic experience with her first birth when she went into labor a month early. Because of the premature labor, she reluctantly birthed in a hospital, where she received a lateral episiotomy. She then tells about her second, home birth, whose success and beauty gave her a transformation of her previous experience. Her worries about tearing over her episiotomy scar shifted her focus deeply on her vagina, and as a result her delivery gave her a crescendo of sensation and emotion that she considered an orgasmic birth. Later, she met Debra Pascali-Bonaro who introduced her to the term “orgasmic birth,” and influenced her to write Heart & Hands, which focuses primarily on the physiology of birth. Elizabeth then shares that “orgasmic” in “orgasmic birth” refers to any experience that is ecstatic, transcendent, sensual, and powerful. She explains how the pattern of female orgasm with the highest peak of sensation has plateaus on the way up. She compares this to progress in labor, and how both processes reflect female identity. She shares that even a painful birthing experience can still reach the point of having an orgasmic dimension. We then talk about what women can do to encourage an orgasmic experience at birth. Elizabeth explains how orgasmic birth can lead to healing from emotional, physical, and psychological trauma. We then discuss how unassisted birth relates to orgasmic birth. We talk about the proper roles of midwives birth workers. We then finish with Elizabeth sharing that the coursework she has on her Heart and Hands course is linked to the National Midwifery Institute. To learn more, visit https://elizabethdavis.com. 1:07 Elizabeth's Story 12:09 What is Orgasmic Birth? 25:09: Unassisted Birth and the Proper Role of Midwives 44:21 The Heart and Hands Course “[Midwives] really have not gotten out there and said, ‘here's how we assess dates, here's how we continue to assess well-being. We can estimate amniotic fluid volume by palpation. We can make note of fetal well-being, not only by mom doing kick counts, but listening with a fetoscope for an extended period of time, and noting good variability and reactivity.” 36:50 https://birthcircle.com For Any Questions, Email Me at media@birthcircle.com
In this episode I have the pleasure of speaking to Kathryn about the births of her two children. Kathryn lives and birthed her babies at home in Ireland. We talk a lot about the differences and similarities in maternity care and how social and hospital systems work against people who choose to homebirth, and ultimately even more so against those who birth in hospital and experience unacceptable rates of intervention and birth trauma. Kathryn shares beautifully how she navigated birth and family trauma handed down through her family, and what she identifies as a phobia of pregnancy and birth, to achieve two positive, pain and injury free homebirths. Kathryn is a social ecologist and director at The Change Agency, and you can find her at https://www.thechangeagency.ie/.

In this podcast Patrick joins me to talk about our unique roles in the unassisted pregnancy and unassisted birth of our firstborn, Rainer. We discuss communication before and during birth, how we found this option, how we navigated criticism and uncertainty, and what we used to KNOW there was nothing to worry about. I’m very adamant that whenever possible your birth plan begins with educating yourself before pregnancy and birth. I hope you enjoy this beautiful story so dear to our hearts.
So excited to share my second birth story here!
Megan's pregnancies were both so different.. a lot like her births! Her second birth story was so exciting and fast. She woke up IN TRANSITION! Can you imagine? I loved how her husband tried to complete their labor checklist, even when Megan only had 60 seconds between contractions. So cute! An underlying theme with the accidental unassisted births we have heard is how there seems to be a sense of peace that all of these mamas had. I love that the body and mind just know what to do and how to remain in a peaceful state, even with things going a little off plan! It's so inspirational and it's a good reminder that you CAN do it! My pregnancy update was a little out of order but you get the idea! :) I have changed midwives now and feel very much at ease with my decision! Megan loved the Boba Wrap for baby and muslin swaddle blankets. She's also one of our many Haakaa fans! (PS - Thanks Cait for my pre-baby Haakaa!! Can't wait to use it) Megan has a YouTube channel (featuring a beautiful video of her birth!), Instagram and a website, so there's plenty of ways to follow along on Megan's beautiful journey. In this weeks episode, Megan & Luke share the births of their two children. Megan had two home births. She had 3 weeks of prodromal labor with her son and when labor started it went so fast that her midwife didn't make it in time. Her midwife lived about an hour away so she got to their house about 10 minutes after Megan gave birth. In The Gladcast Podcast, we play a game that celebrates, uplifts, models, and teaches aspects of creating a joy-centric life. The game is typically “rampage-style”, meaning the players take turns going through the alphabet, one letter at a time, and improvising something to appreciate about that episode's topic that connects with each letter. We welcome our beloved Shelby Seibert as our guest, and rampage on having incredible experiences giving birth. Of course, we end up talking about queefing, the primal animal body, and singing in harmony. Enjoy!
Celia had planned to have a natural birth in a birth center for her first baby. Her labor started and fizzled out. It later started back up with a vengeance! A snowstorm was expected for the next day and rush hour was in full effect. What should've been an easy, half hour ride to the birth center turned into over an hour long journey with Celia's contractions getting stronger along the way. She soon realized she wouldn't make it to the birth center after all. Make sure you listen to hear how and where baby Roah made his debut and laugh with us along the way! Jessica is a mother of three, living in Nevada with her cowboy husband. She used Hypnobirthing to help with pain management during her very fast labors. Jessica was very prepared for her labors, and spent a lot of time exercising during pregnancy to feel her best. She wanted something different for her second birth, after she had her first baby in a hospital. She found a midwife that would travel to her, even though she lives in a very rural area. The midwife was able to make it to Jessica’s first homebirth, but was not able to get there on time for the second homebirth! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
On Episode 3, you’ll hear host Lisa's second (kinda crazy, and by that we mean crazy wonderful) birth story, in which Lisa changed care providers several times and switched from planning to give birth in an in-hospital birthing center to giving birth at home in her 3rd trimester. You’ll hear quite a bit of talk about the perks of working with a midwife and will hear about a couple of different types of midwives, so this episode will provide some education on that topic. As you can deduce from the episode title, things play out in a very surprising way. // BIRTH MATTERS COMPLETE ONLINE COURSE: birthmattersonline.com // SHOW NOTES page with full written birth story, transcript, resources, and photos: birthmattersshow.com
In this episode we discuss doulas attending unassisted births. We talk about the pros and cons for both the client and the doula.
How does the experience of one birth influence the plans for births that follow? Today we chat with Emilee Petrill, and we pack a lot into a sub-hour conversation. Emilee has experienced a hospital birth with her first son Corbyn, a birthing center for her son Penn and finally a home birth for her son Moxy. She walks us through the processes and decisions around each of those experiences. Then we get into the details of her home birth, and why she’s thinking about a free/unassisted birth for a future baby. Bonus topics in this conversation include Emilee’s experience with consuming her placenta and why she’s a big advocate for it, the 10,000+ oz of breast milk she has donated and how the Doing It At Home podcast and community has impacted her body image and sex life!
