We also take a glimpse into the century-long vision that drives Open Forest Protocol's work.--Three Key Takeaways--There are about 1.5 billion hectares of land around the world that would be eligible for some type of environmental asset methodology – such as afforestation, reforestation, biodiversity conservation, etc. This provides exciting opportunities for growth in the sector, and for local communities to focus on positive environmental actions instead of extraction.OFP's approach focuses on enhanced data reporting which is stored and verified on-chain. This data collection is driven by local communities who are collecting conservation data at regular intervals. They simply begin by uploading data, getting their project verified, and turning their project into credits.“The nature of value is changing the value of nature”. Traditionally, extractive approaches have been much more profitable than conservation. This is due to incentive structures that place a greater value on extracting resources from land than by conserving it. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. During his time in Pittsburgh, Dr. Johnson also completed a fellowship in stereotactic neurosurgery under the mentorship of Dade Lunsford, a world-renowned pioneer in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. His training also focused on microvascular decompression surgery under the guidance of Raymond Sekula, a renowned surgeon in the lineage of Peter Jannetta, who initially pioneered the procedure. Dr. Johnson specializes in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery, cranial nerve disorders, and spinal neurosurgery and has published both peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters in these areas. He utilizes both incision-less Gamma Knife Radiosurgery and traditional open approaches in the management of cranial pathology. Similarly, he offers both minimally invasive and open treatments for degenerative spine diseases. This multi-modal approach enables Dr. Johnson to provide highly customized and effective treatment for each individual patient. Dr. Johnson has a research focus on clinical outcomes after radiosurgery. He sees patients with all spinal conditions, brain tumors, and cranial nerve disorders. (Bio credit, Rutgers.edu) Gary Heir, DMD  Rutgers Health University Dental Associates - School of Dental Medicine Specialties: Orofacial Pain Academic Appointments:  Clinical Professor, Director Division of Orofacial Pain Interests: Chronic Pain, Headaches, TMD, Orofacial Pain & Lyme Disease An internationally recognized expert in orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders. He is the director of the Center for Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, which performs research and teaches this advanced field of dentistry focusing on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of complex chronic orofacial pain disorders.  Gary Heir has recently been appointed to the Robert and Susan Carmel Chair in Algesiology at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Over the past decade, Heir played a significant role alongside a committee of national orofacial pain program directors and the American Academy of Orofacial Pain to get orofacial pain recognized as the 12th specialty in dentistry by the American Dental Association in March 2020. He is also the signatory on the application to the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards for recognition of the American Board of Orofacial Pain as the official certifying board for the specialty. Currently, Heir directs the center at the dental school, one of only 12 postgraduate orofacial pain programs in the country accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). He stressed the need for more accredited programs, citing the millions of patients who require treatment but have difficulty finding specialists. In addition to his work at Rutgers, Heir is a highly sought-after lecturer, having delivered nearly 300 presentations on orofacial pain and related subjects in the region, the country and worldwide. He has served on the boards of many professional organizations, including as the president of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain and the American Board of Orofacial Pain and as a member of CODA and the Council on Dental Education and Licensure. He was appointed by three of New Jersey's governors for three consecutive terms as a member of New Jersey Governor's Lyme Disease Commission. Heir has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and abstracts on orofacial pain and TMJ disorders. Nothing says happy holidays like rescued dogs matched with veterans, and trained as service dogs. This is an amazing feel-good story about this dog and vet-friendly non-profit located in San Martin, CA. OFP was founded by Mary Cortani, an Army and Vietnam era veteran, who is a certified Army Master Instructor of Canine Education and an American Kennel Club Certified Canine Good Citizen© Evaluator. Mary serves as the OFP President and Executive Director of Operations. Mary started OFP in 2010 after she was contacted by a vet who was facing a 1-year wait period to be matched with a service dog. After looking into it Mary found the need was immense and she in turn answered the call. Why match veterans with service dogs you might ask. Well, simply because dogs are amazing and when properly matched and well trained, they can read their veterans and help alert them and protect them and assist them in navigating the perils and challenges of living life with PTSD (and a variety of other mental and/or physical challenges). OFP not only rescues all their dogs, they also then train the veterans to train the dogs through a lengthy and detailed training program. The match and bonding that takes place makes all the difference and the results are amazing.You will hear Mary's story along with 2 of their veterans who have gone through the program and live with their own OFP service dogs. We met them and their pups and honestly it was all so amazing the difference these dogs make in the lives of these veterans. I was tired of explaining “how I felt” to in-take forms. I started missing the brotherhood and cohesiveness, I started to feel alone. Damian Mitchelmore, was a history teacher and deputy head for 12 years. Damian believes that swooping in and solving problems for staff isn't the answer to help schools tackle both current and future challenges. Educators are predisposed to want to help people achieve their best. It goes with the territory. But school leaders that try to give colleagues all the answers are not providing their team with the tools to succeed. In the same way that we understand that tying the shoelaces of a year 2 pupil before break will get them out to play faster but will not help them in the long term, we need to adopt a similar approach to overcoming other issues in a school. If we can empower people to solve more issues themselves, staff – and the pupils they teach – are happier, more motivated and ready to face even the most complex challenges. Damian believes that developing a coaching culture helps school leaders put aside their natural ‘I want to fix everything' tendencies so both staff and pupils develop their own problem-solving skills. OLEVI has been at the forefront on innovation in Teaching and Learning for over 20 years, leading the development of Leadership in Teaching and Learning to become a driving force for change. Late 1990s: A vision for the Future During the late 1990s, Professor Sir George Berwick and Richard Lockyer explored how school leaders could create a learning community which retained and valued excellent practitioners and facilitated them being able to share their skills and knowledge; with the aim of raising teaching standards and improving learning outcomes for all. This “Teaching School” concept encouraged Richard to design and develop various Teaching and Learning programmes to raise standards and create partnerships with other schools. Fred and his team at ON A MISSION discovered that measuring, recording, and verifying (MRV) reforestation was difficult. At the same time, Michael was focusing on designing a protocol to track and verify things like tress using blockchain technology. Laid back and longhaired, Nick Taranto is over a decade removed from his service as an officer in the Marine Corps, having enlisted after earning an MBA at Harvard Business School. In speaking with Taranto for an interview featured in this episode, it’s clear that, while he may not resemble the prototypical soldier or B-school grad, his experience at the two revered institutions have helped guide his career as an entrepreneur. Taranto communicates with purpose and has the air of a natural leader and creative thinker, someone who could excel on both the battlefield and the boardroom (although you get the sense that he might spell the latter b-o-r-e-d-r-o-o-m).  After leaving the Marines, Taranto co-founded pioneering meal kit company Plated in 2012 and sold to grocery chain Albertsons for $300 million just five years later. He explained that part of his success at Plated derived from his ability to connect and communicate with investors, retailers and consumers. It’s an important skill set, one that he carries into his latest venture, HOP WTR, a brand of non-alcoholic, hopped sparkling waters that are infused with adaptogens and nootropics. It’s a timely entry into the budding business of beer alternatives and one that, like many entrepreneurial companies, carries a personal meaning for Nick.  Within our conversation, we delved into Taranto’s life and career, including his reason for entering the military, how he managed Plated’s very complex business model, how to assess timing and opportunity and why storytelling is the key to any successful company. On July 28, 2017, D.H. was shot to death in an alley/parking lot area behind a townhouse complex in Minneapolis where D.H.’s sister and his children lived. Surveillance video evidence depicted a man in a hoodie who drew a gun, approached D.H., put the gun to the back of his head, and pulled the trigger. A number of witnesses described the shooter as a light-skinned African-American man with a gray hoodie and long hair in braids or dreadlocks, a description that matched appellant James Andre Woodard. Two of Woodard’s daughters, aged 10 and 11, identified Woodard as the shooter. The 10-year old also mentioned Woodard’s gold teeth as an identifying characteristic. In addition, an adult witness testified to talking with Woodard shortly prior to the shooting and witnessing Woodard commit the shooting. Woodard was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, with intent-not premeditated. A grand jury then indicted him of first-degree premeditated murder. A 12-day trial was held. At the trial, Woodard sought to submit evidence that another individual who shares his general description (without the gold teeth) may have committed the murder. Specifically, Woodard sought to introduce evidence that the potential alternative perpetrator may have been angry at D.H. due to a prior shooting; that he lived near the site of the murder; and that he disappeared after the murder and no one could find him. The trial court refused to allow the evidence to be admitted, concluding that Woodard had not introduced any evidence connecting the potential alternative perpetrator to the scene of the crime. In its instructions to the jury, the trial court instructed the jury that it need not consider the lesser included charge of second-degree murder if it found Woodard guilty of first-degree murder, contrary to the decision in State v. Prtine, 784 N.W.2d 303, 317 (Minn. 2010). Neither party objected to the instruction. The jury convicted Woodard on the first-degree murder charge, and he was given a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of release. On appeal to the supreme court, the issues presented are (1) whether the trial court committed reversible error in refusing to admit appellant’s alternative-perpetrator evidence; and (2) whether the erroneous jury instruction affected appellant’s substantial rights. (Hennepin County) On appeal to the supreme court, the issue presented is whether multiple sentences for OFP violations arising from a single incident may be permitted under the multiple-victim rule. Pursuant to a plea agreement, appellant James Martin Alger, Sr., pleaded guilty to two counts of violating an order for protection (OFP). As part of his factual basis, Alger admitted that he violated the OFP by having contact with his ex-girlfriend and their minor son. He also agreed that he would receive two sentences, which would be served consecutively. The district court imposed sentences that were consistent with the parties’ agreement. On appeal, Alger argued that the imposition of two sentences was unlawful under Minn. Stat. § 609.035 (2018). The court of appeals affirmed the sentences, relying on the multiple-victim rule. On appeal to the supreme court, the issue presented is whether multiple sentences for OFP violations arising from a single incident may be permitted under the multiple-victim rule.
