Podcast: Toe the Rubber May 1, 2025 Return to Synchronicity McClintock and Jung Barbara McClintock: American scientist and pioneering cytogeneticist who made groundbreaking discoveries in genetics. She is best known for discovering "jumping genes" or transposable elements— segments of DNA that can move within a genome. Her work showed that genes are not fixed in place and can regulate each other, which was revolutionary at the time. "If you know you are on the right track, if you have this inner knowledge, then nobody can turn you off... no matter what they say.” "There's no such thing as a central dogma into which everything will fit. Life is too complicated for that.” Carl Jung: “Synchronicity is an ever-present reality for those who have eyes to see.” “The connecting principle appears to reside in the dynamics of the collective unconscious.” Current trend in Gadgets: A short list of physical products: Cross Symmetry bands/tubing Jaeger bands Towell drills - derivatives Weighted baseballs Baseball Derivatives of the pitch grips and different pitches Long Toss A list of technology products (arm or pitch centric): 1. Proximal-to-Distal Sequencing in Pitching: A Coaching Manual for Youth Development Understanding the Proximal-to-Distal Movement Pattern In pitching, the proximal-to-distal movement pattern refers to the sequential activation and movement of body segments, starting from the body's center (proximal segments) and progressing outward to the extremities (distal segments). This sequence is crucial for generating maximum velocity and reducing injury risk. The kinetic chain in pitching typically follows this order: pelvis → trunk → shoulder → arm → forearm → hand. Each segment builds upon the momentum of the previous one, culminating in efficient energy transfer to the baseball. (Biomechanics Research Aims to Improve Sports Performance, The Association of Baseball Pitch Delivery and Kinematic Sequence ...) Sequencing Order and Its Importance The ideal pitching sequence involves: (Kinematic Sequence Important for Preventing Baseball Injuries) 1. Pelvis Rotation: Initiates the kinetic chain, generating rotational energy. 2. Trunk Rotation: Transfers energy from the pelvis to the upper body. 3. Shoulder Rotation: Continues the energy transfer, positioning the arm. 4. Arm Acceleration: Propels the forearm and hand forward. 5. Forearm and Hand Movement: Final acceleration and release of the ball. (Sport Specialization and Overuse Injuries in Adolescent Throwing ..., Comparison of Kinematic Sequences During Curveball and Fastball ...) Proper sequencing ensures that each segment reaches its peak velocity at the right time, optimizing performance and minimizing stress on the body. (Biomechanics Research Aims to Improve Sports Performance) Negative Effects of Overtraining Distal Segments Focusing excessively on training distal segments (arm, forearm, hand) can disrupt the natural kinetic chain, leading to: • Increased Injury Risk: Overemphasis on the arm can cause imbalances and place undue stress on joints and muscles, increasing the likelihood of injuries such as UCL tears. • Neuromuscular Fatigue: Isolated training of distal segments can lead to fatigue and decreased performance due to the lack of support from proximal muscles. • Inefficient Mechanics: Neglecting the development of proximal segments can result in compensatory movements, reducing overall pitching efficiency. Disruption of Motor Engram Sequencing Motor engrams are neural patterns that encode specific movements. Overtraining distal movements can: • Alter Motor Patterns: Focusing on arm path alone can lead to the development of faulty movement patterns, disrupting the natural sequencing of the kinetic chain. • Impair Skill Acquisition: Neglecting full-body mechanics hampers the integration of complex movements, making it harder for pitchers to learn and refine their delivery. • Reduce Adaptability: Ingrained improper patterns limit a pitcher's ability to adjust mechanics in response to game situations or coaching feedback. Age-Specific Considerations Ages 10–12: • Focus: Developing general athleticism and introducing basic pitching mechanics. • Training Emphasis: Body awareness, balance, and coordination exercises. • Avoid: Specialized pitching drills that isolate arm movements. Ages 13–15: • Focus: Refining mechanics and building strength. • Training Emphasis: Core stability, lower body strength, and integrated movement patterns. • Monitor: Growth spurts that may affect coordination and mechanics. Ages 16–18: • Focus: Enhancing performance and preparing for higher-level competition. • Training Emphasis: Advanced strength training, power development, and fine-tuning mechanics. • Caution: Avoid overuse and ensure adequate recovery to prevent injuries. Conclusion A comprehensive understanding of proximal-to-distal sequencing is essential for developing efficient and safe pitching mechanics. Coaches should prioritize full-body training approaches that emphasize the integration of all body segments, ensuring young pitchers build a solid foundation for long-term success.

#258Fancy a bite of woolly mammoth jerky? A beef-jerky-like fossil of this prehistoric creature has been discovered – a metre-long piece of skin still covered in hair. And the most amazing thing is that the entire genome has remained intact, giving more insight into these creatures than ever before. Could this help bring woolly mammoths back to life? There is a way to make butter not from cows, not from vegetable oils or even microbes, but from pure carbon. And if you want a climate friendly way of producing a delicious spreadable fat, this may just be it. A company called Savor is using a process that can convert captured CO2 or natural gas into fatty acids. The origin of life is a huge scientific mystery: how can something so complex emerge from inert and random molecules? Well, Google has created a simulation to figure this out. The company has used computer code to recreate the random ‘primordial soup' of early Earth, with results that might baffle you. When mammals breastfeed, calcium is stripped from their bones to make the milk, but their bones don't get significantly weaker. How does that work? Well, a new, bone-strengthening hormone found in mice may have finally solved the long-standing mystery – and could benefit human health.Plus: How our pupils change size with every breath; how cosmic rays could help protect financial markets; and how ancient Denisovan DNA may have helped the people of Papua New Guinea adapt to their environment.Hosts Timothy Revell and Christie Taylor discuss with guests Corryn Wetzel, Madeleine Cuff, Matthew Sparkes and Grace Wade.To read more about these stories, visit newscientist.com. How is this a "strong" economy? June Jobless Rate Triggers Sahm Rule: Recession In this morning's US Bureau of Labor Statistics data release, the U-3 unemployment rate increased 4.1 percent in June 2024, rising by one-tenth of a percentage point above the forecast rate.  This uptick triggers the Sahm Rule, a real-time recession indicator, suggesting that the US economy is in, or is nearing, a recession. The Sahm Rule, developed by former Fed economist Claudia Sahm, is designed to identify the start of a recession using changes in the total unemployment rate. According to the rule, a recession is underway if the three-month moving average of the national unemployment rate rises by 0.50 percentage points or more, relative to its low during the previous 12 months. With the June 2024 U-3 rate of 4.1 percent, the average of the last three months being 4.0 and the lowest 12-month rate of 3.5 percent in July 2023, this criterion has been met. Sahm Rule indications (1960 – 2024)   While more data will be required to confirm the Sahm Rule indication, the impact of accelerating prices, interest rates at their highest levels since 2007, and commercially suppressive pandemic policies have probably caught up with US producers and consumers. [Opening music fades out]Host: "Welcome back to the Cleverly Changing Podcast. I'm your host, Elle Cole. Mom of two twin daughters. Today, we're diving deep into a topic that ignites creativity and innovation: guiding our youth to become successful entrepreneurs."The essence of entrepreneurship for kidsHost: "Before we jump into the practical aspects, let's understand the essence of entrepreneurship for kids."For today's episode, we define entrepreneurship as creating a profitable business. The essence of entrepreneurship for young kids is recognized when they step back, identify various issues in their communities or industries, and take innovative steps to solve the problems they see. Their clear result is a successful business, recognition, and impact.Host: "Entrepreneurship isn't just about starting a business; it's about fostering a mindset. It's teaching kids to identify problems and create solutions. Take young Marcus, for example. He noticed the lack of recycling bins in his neighborhood and decided to take action. With support from his family, he launched a small campaign, distributing recycling bins and educating his community about the importance of recycling."Young Successful EntrepreneursHere are a few young entrepreneurs and their ventures, along with the problems they identified, their solutions, and the results they achieved:Young Entrepreneur | Problem Identified | Solution | ResultsMikaila Ulmer | Decline in Bee Population | Created BeeSweet Lemonade with a honey-based recipe | $1 million in sales, appeared on Shark TankCory Nieves | Lack of Access to Quality Cookies | Started Mr. Cory's Cookies | Featured on multiple TV shows, expanded businessMoziah Bridges | Limited Availability of Stylish Bow Ties | Founded Mo's Bows | Featured in major publications, landed deals with large retailersIsabella Dymalovski | Fear of Needles in Hospitals | Invented the "SnapWrap" to cover IV lines | Won awards, received patents, and sold her inventionEden and David | Lemonerdy University | Created Coding classes for kids on YouTube, expanded it to products like stickers, t-shirts, and hoodies. | Featured on podcasts, expanded business, and won competitions.Bailee | Bailee's Nails  | Created a nail subscription box for kids. Then, we talk about the dry facts surrounding the drought the southwest United States has been suffering though, including how it can be considered the worst in recorded history by several measures. Next, we examine how the very framework we use on a daily basis to talk about environmental issues has been corrupted for over 50 years now to shift as much of the blame away from corporate responsibility as possible. Finally, we briefly go over how for the first time, computer modeling has been able to successfully simulate the universe from the Big Bang through to its present state. Activist #MMT - podcast

Welcome to episode 67 of Activist #MMT. Today I talk Sam Levey on the core assumptions of mainstream economics. Sam is a research scholar with the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity, a PhD candidate in economics at the University of Missouri Kansas City, or UMKC, and a co-founder of the online advocacy group, Deficit Owls. Sam starts by giving an update on his progress towards his PhD. After that, our conversation is all about the core assumptions of mainstream economics, which is currently neoclassical. This is part one of the new two-part conversation, but it's also part of two of a larger four-part series about the relationship between mainstream economics and MMT. Parts one and four are with Dirk Ehnts and Asker Voldsgaard (here's part one, which contains a link to all four parts). Last week, I spoke with Dirk and Asker about their 2020 paper which is a response to a 2019 paper by Jeppe Druedahl. Jeope's paper is a summary of the mainstream concern for the long-term fiscal sustainability of government spending, and its corresponding debt and interest on the debt. For more on the details of this particular argument, consider taking a listen to last week's episode. Today, Sam and I use Jeppe's paper as a bouncing off point for discussing the core assumptions on which the above argument, and mainstream economics in general, is built. To very briefly summarize Jeppe's argument: This conversation with Sam is focused on mainstream (which is currently neoclassical) economics, and more specifically, the fundamental assumptions that underlie it. As a jumping off point, I'm going to briefly review the paper I discussed last week with Asker Voldsgaard and Dirk Ehnts. They wrote a response to a 2019 paper by Danish economist Jeppe Druedahl. Jeppe's paper is called “A kinder egg on MMT“ and is basically the mainstream argument against MMT regarding the long-term fiscal sustainability of government spending, and its consequential debt and interest on the debt. In brief, under mainstream assumptions, if you model out government spending to infinity, which means at a minimum, 75 to 100 years, there are serious concerns. To such an extent, that there may be only two choices, both of which are genuine Economic Armageddon: hyperinflation or – despite the ability to issue its own currency – voluntarily default in order to avoid hyperinflation. You should consider reading Jeppe's paper, as well as Asker and Dirk's response. You should also listen to the previous episode where we discuss both. In addition, this argument has been thoroughly addressed in several papers by Scott Fulwiler, the latest being the 2020 paper called “When the interest rate on the national debt is a policy choice (and “printing money" does not apply)." Links to three of these papers by Scott, from 2006, 2016, and 2020, plus those by Asker and Dirk, and Jeppe, can be found in the show notes. As I understand it, when it comes to the particular concern of long-term fiscal sustainability, the core assumptions are: First and foremost, loanable funds: The idea that banks cannot issue loans by creating new money, but rather loan out other peoples money. In addition, the central government can borrow that money as if the government is just another private citizen or company. Loanable funds implies that financial crowding out is possible, which means that the non-government sector must compete for those loanable funds with the government. This further implies that, although the central bank can set the short-term interest rate that they wish to target (called the nominal rate), they have little to no control over long-term interest rates. These longer-term rates are called “real“ interest rates, because they are set by so-called “real“ forces in the market. Note the inherent ideology lurking behind that word “real.“ MMT says that there is only one way to spend which is by issuing currency. Taxation and bond sales may be necessary for other purposes, but when and for what is never directly related to the currency that is issued – and rarely-if-ever a one-to-one relationship. Mainstream calls issuing currency without selling bonds “printing money.“ It asserts that printing money is (A) not possible without also paying for it with the revenue from taxation or bond sales, either now or in the future. and (B) conversely, that it is indeed possible for the issuer to collect that revenue and then respend it at a later date. Again, MMT says this is not possible, as the only way for the issuer to spend is by... issuing. More specifically, this is done by expanding balance sheets at the central bank and Treasury, by making numbers bigger and smaller on accounting t-charts. Finally, mainstream also assumes perpetual or inevitable full employment, in addition to the god-like foresight to know what federal spending will be, not just next year, but 100 years into the future. In addition to the mainstream argument regarding fiscal sustainability, Sam and I talk about many other different topics, including deductive versus inductive reasoning, quantitative versus qualitative research methods, the Great Depression versus the Great Vacation, and statistical overfitting, We also discuss the contradictory view of how the central government is seen by mainstream as both a helpless dainty flower and, simultaneously, a potentially-catastrophically destructive force. We also answer a question by a patron of Activist #MMT, Alexander, regarding the mainstream response to sectoral balances in the context of loanable funds. Finally, we talk about how and why mainstream economics considers money to be "special." Basically, in the mainstream view, money is a scarce, physical thing – in other words, no different than any other commodity. This means that the only way for someone in the non-government sector (citizens and businesses) to get new money, is for it to be wrested from the hands of another citizen or business. Under the theory of loanable funds, even government spending comes from the non-government sector, and so must also be ripped from the hands of someone in the economy. Hence, a zero sum game and crowding out. scarce! But even if not scarce, the assumption of full employment SIMULATES scarcity! MMT recognizes that all kinds of money, including reserves, cash, bonds, and other treasuries, is not scarce but another type of IOU. As Sam told me, "finance itself is not scarce, It's a coordination mechanism." This insight and reality changes the battle from, “from whose hands will we take the money?“ To “Who will we put in charge of this coordination?" As MMT recognizes, the latter has always been the case. The former is predicated on the assumption that our money can and will never be coordinated by the government. As Neil Wilson said to Phil Armstrong on their recent Gower Initiative interview (to paraphrase): “the plane works just fine, we just seriously need a new crew.“ Sam takes this further by saying that we need a new process with which to choose that crew. However, even if we do get a new process, even if we do get money out of our politics, and even if we do get a new and good crew, none of it matters if money is truly scarce and special, such as under loanable funds. If money is scarce, then we as a society and citizens, and the government that is supposed to represent us, will never be in charge of coordinating our money. As a final note, I also talk about the mainstream assumptions of the neutrality of money in episode 57, which is part two with Asad Zaman, and historical time in last week's episode with Dirk and Asker. And now onto my conversation with Sam Levey. Resources My primary source for preparing for this interview was Steve Keen's 2011 book, Debunking Ecoonmics, second edition. Every episode and snippet on Activist #MMT with Sam. I discuss the neutrality of money in part two with Asad Zaman, on episode 57. Michael Kalecki's 1943 paper, Political Aspects of Full Employment (Sam considers this papers one of his favorites) Yale economics professor, Truman F Bewley 1998 book by Alan Blinder, Elie R.D. Canetti, David E. Lebow, and Jeremy B. Rudd, Asking About Prices: A New Approach to Understanding Price Stickiness Sherlock Holmes is the master of deduction (the difference between deductive and inductive reasoning) Eric Grauchwe's 2018 book, Winter War: Hoover, Roosevelt, and the First Clash Over the New Deal Here's Sam's response to my statements regarding S=I: "So, they way Keynes defines *actual* S and I, they are always equal at all times no matter what. Usually if you’re talking about the possibility that they might not be equal at some time, then you’re talking about *desired* or *planned* S and I. Keynes has a 1937 paper that goes into this issue, which is still important for PKE I think. “The Ex Ante Theory of the Rate of Interest." Full context of question by Activist #MMT patron, Alexander Dear Sam, I wonder if you could explain what is the neoclassical equivalent of the sectoral balance view in national accounting. And how it is different from the heterodox perspective. Today I've shared a post about EU interest Payments in % of GDP “Public-debt-to GDP can be a misleading metric in assessing debt sustainability; it does not account for interest payments!" (https://twitter.com/heimbergecon/status/1330806100992651264) I got this reply from a banking consultant: “This is a terrible argument because it ignores both the impact on investment appetite of the destruction of the time value of money, and the misallocating to the public sector of a disproportionate share of available funds, starving the private sector and disrupting the yield/safety/liquidity equation." … My answer: Dear Bob Lyddon, there is no tradeoff between funds spent into the public or into the private sector. This is because the public sector, the government creates those funds as it spends. This at least is true if the government has a sovereign currency, a central bank and a treasury. As shown in the Sectoral Balance View of National Accounts: (S – I) + (T – G) + (-CAB) = 0 Meaning: The private domestic financial balance (household savings minus private investment, S - I) plus the government financial balance (gov. tax revenue minus gov. spending, T - G) plus the current account balance (- net exports + net external income flows, CAB) equals zero Meaning: The public sector deficit must be the income of the other two sectors. This is an accounting identity. It is true by definition! With external trade in balance, the government deficit must be the private sector income! Asking the government to reduce its deficit equals asking the private sector to reduce its total income!

My eyes were shut and I could hear a lot of activity going on in the room. I was laying on a bed. I felt weak and disoriented. I could hear my wife talking to a man with a deep voice and a handful of other voices moving around the room. I finally dared to open my eyes. I was clearly in a large hospital room. There was a lot of medical stands and devices around the bed, some making very light noises. My wife was talking to a tall doctor when she noticed I was awake. They looked at me, concerned. She looked like she was going to faint… The doctor told me I had been through 2 major heart attacks. I was in the ICU and I’d be taking a bunch of pills for the rest of my life. My heart would be very damaged and I wouldn’t be running around playing soccer with my two daughters again anytime soon. Overwhelmed, I shut my eyes. The last 2 days came flooding back into my mind. The massive chest pain on Christmas night, with my entire extended family around me. The ambulance coming, my family crowded in the front window, watching, Christmas tree lighted up behind them, as I was rushed to the local hospital. The rest of the time was a blur as I remember chest pain so bad I passed out in the ambulance. Hours later I had to be moved to a larger, city hospital and I remember the chest pain being so intense that I thought I was about to die. I passed out, again. That is when I work up in the room with the doctor and my wife and about 5 nurses or so, all busy doing who knows what. I was numb. I was only 28. No history of heart problems in the family. I didn’t drink, smoke or do drugs of any kind. I had a fairly low-stress office job and had risen through the ranks, making it out of the cubicle farm into an office. Why me?! How did this happen? My mind was racing and then I felt it. Like a UFC fighter punching me in the chest with all his power. Consciousness faded as did the massive strike of sudden pain. I woke up again, in another room. It looked like a simple hospital room instead of a packed, state of the art ICU room I was in before. No one was in the room. What if I had another heart attack and I simply died? What would my family do? Was this life I had what I had really wanted? Have you ever heard Tony Robbins talk about the rocking chair thought exercise? It’s where you pretend you are at the end of your life, sitting in a rocking chair, thinking It’s where you pretend you are at the end of your life, sitting in a rocking chair, thinking about all the decisions and actions you had taken or not taken in life. Would you be proud of your life or completely regretful? I spent about an hour going through that exercise, with what I thought could really be the end of my life. I realized I was proud of a few things and totally regretful about many others and I wasn’t even 30 yet. Long story short, the doctor came in and told me that they had called a specialist. They didn’t find any blocked arteries, I had no health risks, I was young, and the cardio unit couldn’t figure out why I had had 3 massive heart attacks in 2 days. The specialist did a simple test and found that I had a virus in the sack around my heart. It was no worse than getting the flu virus. I wouldn’t have to take all the pills the rest of my life and my heart was NOT damaged. The virus SIMULATES a heart attack, with no lasting damage. I was to take some antibiotics and I’d be fine in 7 days… I was completely shocked, again. I felt complete relief. While I was being checked out of the hospital, I made a commitment to myself not to play it safe anymore. Not to live a life that bored me. Not to pretend to be average anymore. Not to die with regret. Fast-forward a bunch of years to today. Lot’s has happened since my 3 simulated heart attacks. I’m sure I’ll be telling you about some of those things another time, but I wanted to share where this journey began.

Abstract: Purkinje cells are the principal neurons of the cerebellar cortex. One of their distinguishing features is that they fire two distinct types of action potential, called simple and complex spikes, which interact with one another. Simple spikes are stereotypical action potentials that are elicited at high, but variable, rates (0 - 100 Hz) and have a consistent waveform. Complex spikes are composed of an initial action potential followed by a burst of lower amplitude spikelets. Complex spikes occur at comparatively low rates ([~] 1 Hz) and have a variable waveform. Although they are critical to cerebellar operation a simple model that describes the complex spike waveform is lacking. Here, a novel single-compartment model of Purkinje cell electrodynamics is presented. The simpler version of this model, withtwo active conductances and a leak channel, can simulate the features typical of complex spikes recorded in vitro. If calcium dynamics are also included, the model can capture the pause in simple spike activity that occurs after complex spike events.Together, these models provide an insight into the mechanisms behind complex spike spikelet generation, waveform variability and their interactions with simple spike activity. Abstract: Neuromodulation techniques such as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) are a promising treatment for memory-related disorders including anxiety, addiction, and dementia. However, the outcome of these treatments appears to be paradoxical, as the use of these techniques can both disrupt and enhance memory even when applied to the same brain target. In this paper, we hypothesize that disruption and enhancement of memory through neuromodulation can be explained by the dropout of engram nodes. We used a convolutional neural network to classify handwritten digits and letters, applying dropout at different stages to simulate DBS effects on engrams. We showed that dropout applied during training improves the accuracy of prediction, whereas dropout applied during testing dramatically decreases accuracy of prediction, which mimics enhancement and disruption of memory, respectively. We further showed that transfer learning of neural networks with dropout had increased accuracy and rate of learning. Dropout during training provided a more robust skeleton network where transfer learning can be applied, mimicking the effects of chronic DBS on memory. Overall, we show that dropout of nodes can be a potential mechanism by which neuromodulation techniques such as DBS can both disrupt and enhance memory and provides a unique perspective on this paradox. I'm not against bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), but I do think one should explore as many natural alternatives as possible first. Or, for even more bang for the buck, pair BHRT with the tactics you'll discover in this episode. My entire presentation was focused on 32 different ways to increase testosterone naturally, with no injections or hormone replacement protocols required. I'm not against bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), but I do think one should explore as many natural alternatives as possible first. Or, for even more bang for the buck, pair BHRT with the tactics you'll discover in this episode. Their event in Vegas each year is, in my opinion, well worth checking out. Recently, in two separate papers, testosterone therapy has gotten a bad rap and ), and been blamed as a culprit for coronary artery disease and stroke risk, but , this is simply not true. As a matter of fact, in Jay's , he clearly lays out the research behind optimized testosterone levels improving heart health, optimizing cognitive function, combatting Alzheimer's disease, staving off bone loss, and much much more. My friend Carl Lenore also recently addressed some of this unfair testosterone vilification in . Furthermore, as I explain in the introduction to this podcast, I recently began to use microdoses of testosterone cream (compounded by ) in the morning and evening to simulate the natural diurnal release of testosterone, and have noted a profound impact in my own energy levels and recovery (although this is not a strategy I endorse as a "bandaid" but instead the icing-on-the-cake for males in their late 30's and beyond once all other foundational practices I outline in this podcast are established). Incidentally, my wife is now using progesterone from Dr. Koniver for similar purposes. In this episode, I will review the key biomarkers for achieving peak male health, along with the most potent and effective practices for optimizing biological variables for men's fertility and longevity. Sponsor Circle CI Episode on CI/CD with Circle CI Show DetailsIn this episode, we cover the following topics: VMs vs containers - why revisit?Originally talked about this in episode 1 Got most of it right, but some inconsistencies/holes Let's revisit to fill in the gaps, and dive a whole LOT deeper this time around Types of virtualization Full virtualization ("virtual machines") Simulates enough hardware to allow an unmodified "guest" OS to be run in isolation Resources of computer are partitioned via hypervisor Examples:VMWare, Parallels, VirtualBox, Hyper-V Operating-system-level virtualization ("containers") Resources of computer are partitioned via the kernel"Guest" OSes share same running instance of OS as the host system Based on the virtualization, isolation, and resource management mechanisms provided by the Linux kernelnamespaces and cgroups Examples:Docker, LXC, FreeBSD jails Hypervisors Also known as a Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) Creates and runs virtual machines It is a process that separates OS and apps from underlying physical hardware Multiple VMs share virtualized hardware resources When you create a new VM, the following happens: Hypervisor allocates memory and CPU space for VMs exclusive use Complete OS is installed onto the VM The VM's OS communicates with the hypervisor to perform tasks Host OS is able to see all physical hardware, whereas guest OS (VM) can only see hardware to which hypervisor has granted access Two types of hypervisors Type 1 (also called "native" or "bare metal" hypervisors) Run directly on the host's hardware to control the hardware and manage the guest VMsruns in ring 0 Are an OS themselves (simple OS on top of which you run VMs)the physical machine the hypervisor is running on serves only for virtualization purposesExceptions: Hyper-V, KVM ExamplesXen, Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware ESX/ESXi Type 2 (also called "hosted" hypervisors) Run on conventional OS, just like other apps Guest OS runs as a process on the host Hypervisor separates the guest OS from the host OS ExamplesVirtualBox, Parallels Protection levels (rings) x86 family of CPUs provide a range of protection levels also known as rings Ring 0 has the highest level privilege (kernel/supervisor) Ring 3 lowest level (applications) Hypervisor occupies ring 0 of CPU Kernels for any guest operating systems running on the system must run in less privileged CPU rings But most OS kernels are written explicitly to run in ring 0 Techniques to deal with this: Full virtualization hypervisor provides CPU emulation to handle ring 0 operations made by unmodified guest OS kernels emulation process requires both time and system resourcesinferior performance Paravirtualization Technique in which hypervisor provides an API and the OS of the guest VM calls that API Requires guest OS to be modified (to make API calls)Replace any privileged operations that will only run in ring 0 of the CPU with calls to the hypervisor ("hypercalls") Allows tasks to run in host OS (instead of in guest OS where performance would be worse) Hardware virtualization Requires a CPU with hardware virtualization extensions, such as Intel VT or AMD-VIntel virtualization (VT-x) Virtual Machine Extensions Adds ten new instructions VMPTRLD, VMPTRST, VMCLEAR, VMREAD, VMWRITE, VMCALL, VMLAUNCH, VMRESUME, VMXOFF, and VMXON. These instructions permit entering and exiting a virtual execution mode where the guest OS perceives itself as running with full privilege (ring 0), but the host OS remains protected. Reduces/eliminates any OS modifications in guest OS Provides an additional privilege mode above ring 0 in which the hypervisor can operateessentially leaving ring 0 available for unmodified guest OSes Better performance than paravirtualization Links Virtual machine Hypervisor What is a hypervisor? I've been getting a lot of questions lately about the mysterious molecule I consume before I eat bread and pasta - a compound that allows me to digest gluten without any of the "bathroom decommissioning" that so notoriously occurs after a hefty bout of gluten consumption. After all, I don't want to not eat bread or pasta for the rest of my life. I find them enjoyable. But due to glyphosate exposure from pesticides and herbicides, stress, a leaky gut and other modern assailants that make gluten a bigger issue than it ever has been in human history, I use a bit of better living through science to make gluten digestible. In today's podcast, I interview the inventors of Gluten Guardian - Matt Gallant and Wade Lightheart - the guys who first appeared in the podcast "" and later in my article "". Matt Gallant is an entrepreneur, a poker champion, an ex-rock guitarist, a serial entrepreneur (who's built 13 companies in the last 20 years) strength and conditioning coach with a degree in kinesiology, the CEO and co-founder of a company called BiOptimizers. Wade T. Lightheart, host of the AWESOME Health Podcast, 3-time All Natural National Bodybuilding Champion, advisor to the American Anti-Cancer Institute and Cofounder of BiOptimizers. He is also the author of several books including the best-selling books, “Staying Alive in a Toxic World” and “The Wealthy Backpacker.” MARGE LINK TO WADE'S BOOKS During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Matt eats between 6-10,000 calories every Sunday...7.36 For the calorie spike. One meal per day for 6 days. A combo of healthy and regular food. Matt feels great afterwards. He takes the day off from training. -Why we should be cognizant of our gluten intake, even if we don't have celiac disease...10:30  New England Journal of Medicine listed 55 diseases that can be caused by eating gluten. Many times we're not aware of these diseases; can be immune, neurological and psychiatric. Differences between wheat germ in the gluten and gluten itself. Different type of protein. Both are resistant to digestion. Can make the gut more permeable. (Leaky gut) Amylase/trypsin inhibitors come packaged with gluten - specifically wheat. What about other factors to leaky gut such as stress and glyphosate. 4x increase in celiac disease; traced to glyphosate interrupting the digestive process. Will continue to increase due to the exposure to glyphosate.  -The use of enzymes in the preparation of food to increase its palatability...18:10 In a perfect world, you'd be eating pre-digested food primarily. You use enzymes to assist with breaking food down. -Do Matt and Wade recommend any panels for evaluating gluten sensitivity or gluten cross reactivity?...20:30 Anti-tissue trans glutaminase or endomysial antibody. Recommend Cyrex. Helps you know if other foods such as coffee or quinoa are exacerbating your level of gluten intolerance. Also testing gliad and peptide antibodies. How does gluten negatively affect the brain?...24:00 Inflames the brain by causing an auto-immune response. Antibodies intended to protect your body actually attack your body. During the digestive process, gluten can be broken down into proteins similar to psychedelic drugs. Has an addictive quality. Overloads the brain with glutamate. Irritates and damages brain cells. Negative impact on your social life. -What Wade REALLY thinks about Monsanto...29:50 They were written into protection against lawsuits by federal law during the previous administration. Demonstrable evidence of their products causing damage to the body. Has been bought out by Bayer. Food has essentially been mutated, much to our detriment. Destroy livelihoods of small farmers. -The product Matt uses to pre-digest gluten before you even eat it...37:00 Dipeptidyl peptidase 4, also DPP-4. Dissolves bread placed in water in 15 minutes (watch the video below) You take it while you eat. Does DPP-4 actually mitigate symptoms of gluten intolerance? Depends on the dosage. Can be taken as late as the day after eating. Citrusy foods have been found to inhibit DPP-4 Breaks down various hormones in the body such as insulin. -Does DPP-4 have any effect on foods not containing gluten?...45:00 Milk proteins, but not milk sugars like lactose. Good idea to add DPP-4 if you have a plant-based diet. Just mix and match until you find the right combination for you, and for the right meals. Safe for children to ingest. -More on Matt and Wade's diet and workout regimen...49:50 -How do HCL and hydrochloric acid work with Gluten Guardian?...54:55 Plays a supportive role Stomach acid decreases after the age of 35 Simulates the effects of apple cider vinegar P3-OM  Optimal time to take is before bed or first thing in the morning, rather than meal time. -Matt plays "myth busters" with colonizing properties of probiotics...58:41 -Special offer from Matt and Wade...1:04:15 Get 10% off your order of Gluten Guardian when you use code "greenfield" at 365 day unconditional money-back guarantee Brand new offer: "we'll fix your digestion guarantee" Resource from this episode: -Masszymes -Cyrex blood panel for gluten allergy -Book: Grain Brain Episode Sponsors: - utilizes sound waves to optimize sexual performance and reverse the effects of ED. Healing Herbs http://learntruehealth.com/healing-herbs/ Healing Herbs You Need To Know About When you learn more about Naturopathic Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine and Herbal Medicine, we look more to the traditional styles of healing. They would look at the cycles of the moon and seasons. We would want to consume healing herbs in this cycle that would help us in a different way. It could boost out a body in a certain way. Healing herbs can actually be delicious. There are times when taking healing herbs for energy is great. And there are also times for supporting the body to heal and just rest. I wasn't a big fan about Herbal Medicine before meeting my guest, Dr. Megan Saunders. She educated me on how gentle, effective and beneficial Herbal Medicine is. Saunders' Philosophy Saunders has a deep underlying belief in the innate healing power of our bodies. She became a Naturopathic Physician to help others achieve their health goals through natural means. "I work with the body to support healing instead of disease and symptom management," said Saunders.  "My role is a primary care physician or as a specialist in natural health." History of Herbs Healing herbs are the medicine of our ancestors. This is something we've been using for thousands of years. What happened with pharmaceutical medicines is that we lost touch with nature. There are so much more healing components in herbs. Saunders taught me how to take healing herbs and I totally felt a difference.  I feel relaxed and calmer. Basically, I feel ready for bed whereas before I'd be so wired till late at night. "Healing herbs are amazing for the body. They have so many different constituents that combine together," said Saunders. "Creating a multi-acting medicinal product that's going to help improve your health." Good Herbs Line The Good Herbs line is formulating the product to get a good combination of healing herbs. Consequently, It targets a range of symptoms. Saunders says the quality of the products is very good. Most noteworthy, you don't want to be taking healing herbs that are perhaps dried in a factory line drive-by. Nervine Herbs First of all, Saunders says nervine herbs help calm the nervous system. In addition to that, these healing herbs are good for people who are over stimulated or have depression.  Furthermore, it is also good for people who have stress, anxiety as well as any pain conditions. "When herbs are grown in the wild, the active constituents of the healing herbs are part of the plants' immune system," she said. "In addition to that, if it's in the wild, it's going to be making more of the chemical constituents in a stronger quantity." Skullcap A constituent in Nervine herbs is skullcap. Safe for pregnant women who have sleep issues. Gentle herb but powerful. Calming without being a sedative. Good for people who have panic attacks or anxiety. Helps people with epilepsy. Saunders explains that pain has something to do with your mental state. Consequently, Nervine herbs reduce that, combined with white willow bark. White Willow Bark   Aspirin is inspired from this herb. Has Salicylic acid in it. If you have a clotting condition, try this formula. A person who is allergic to aspirin can take this herb. If you have chronic stress there is often inflammation and people have pain. Hence, white willow bark helps to counter that. Hops Not only used to make beer. Tastes bitter so it is a digestive herb. Anything that is bitter is going to stimulate the gall bladder, bowel production, and liver. So it's most effective if you take it before meals. Has a Phyto-estrogenic effect. Simulates estrogen receptor for people that are low in estrogen. Used in some menopausal formulas. Addresses inflammation issues. "Most Nervines are going to help with digestive issues because they have multiple actions," explains Saunders. "People who experience liver stagnation might take a while to get used to this herb." Vervain A lot of European societies regard this as a sacred herb. It's very calming to the nervous system. May be taken as a tea that you can drink on a daily basis. A digestive herb. Valerian It is a strong sedative herb. Primarily for people who have sleep issues. Your body will prevent it from overdosing. Because this is also calming and anti-inflammatory, it also addresses pain issues. Furthermore, usually, two droppers is the right amount of dosage. "Basically, all these healing herbs benefits overlap and each contributes in healing the patient. Yet the beautiful thing about herbs is, it's hard to take too much of it," Saunders said. Adrenal Herbs Saunders advises that for adrenal formulas, it doesn't matter whether you take it in liquid or capsule form. But in the liquid form, you can adjust the dosage. Here are the key constituents of adrenal herbs: Licorice The main ingredient of adrenal herbs. A synergizing herb which means it makes all other herbs work better together. Has so many medicinal properties like being anti-viral. Extends the half-life of your cortisol. Used for people with digestive issues. It is an incredible liver herb. Because Licorice stimulates the adrenal glands, people with high blood pressure should use this with caution. This dosage should be taken usually in the morning or mid-afternoon. Royal Jelly It's the product made by bees. Extremely nutritive. Must be tested cautiously. This cannot be given to people who have bee sting allergies towards. "With adrenal fatigue, there are a lot of co-factors that your body needs to create all of these hormones to function properly," Saunders explains. "B-vitamins, magnesium and minerals---this is a dense, nutrient-rich product." Holy Basil Has a calming effect. It also has an insulin-balancing effect. Finally, Saunders also clarified that often with adrenal issues, we have blood sugar swings and feel tired. Hence, she claims Good Herbs formulations can eradicate all those medical conditions over time using her treatment plan. "It's a long-term treatment plan usually 3-6 months in terms of assessment.  Hence, you should be feeling better after a month," Saunders said. "By the end of three months, one should start noticing the difference." Dr. Saunders graduated from medical school in Bastyr University in 2013. Her specialties include Naturopathy and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Pain Medicine. She says she has a passion for empowering patients with the tools to create a new standard of health. This she says, improved their quality of life through natural health. Get Connected With Dr. Megan Saunders!
