Maybe you're still munching on your Thanksgiving leftovers. Or maybe you're too stuffed to even think about eating. But before you push away from the table, we're bringing you two of our favorite stories from over the years about…food! We start in East San José, at a scrappy strip mall anchored by a Vietnamese sandwich, or “bánh mì” shop doesn't look like much. But the corner of Burdette Dr. and S. King Rd is actually a California transportation hub. Every morning by 8 AM, there's a steady stream of riders lining up by a spotless white tour coach with no visible markings. They're here for the daily run of the Xe Đò Hoàng, which means “Royal Coach” in Vietnamese. But those in the know call it the “Bánh Mì Bus.” Hop on, enjoy your delicious sandwich, and listen to this story from Reporter Christine Nguyen that we first brought you in October 2022 about food, community…and murder for hire!  Then, we jet up north to the town of Susanville in Lassen County–mostly known for its two state prisons. But the town is also home to a chef cooking up gourmet meals, inspired by his childhood in the Pacific Island nation of Palau. Rice and short-ribs, poke, and toasted angel food cake are just some of the culinary treats Brennan Temol whips up in the community college cafeteria. In August 2022, for her series California Foodways, reporter Lisa Morehouse took us on a food tour with Temol. She learned how the Palauan chef used his skills to elevate cafeteria food and found a way to bring a taste of home to a high desert community that in some ways, isn't so different from his homeland. For the people of Palau, a nation of over 300 small islands in the Western Pacific, climate change is not a future threat, but an immediate and pressing reality. Rising temperatures and sea levels have changed their way of life and are already impacting communities. How are they confronting these changes, and what can the rest of the world learn from their experiences? In this episode, host Bruno Sarda is joined by Mikayla Etpison from the Palau Office of Climate Change, and Martine Crowe, a member of the EY team that codeveloped a broad climate strategy with the government of Palau. Mikayla emphasizes the disproportionate impact of climate change on Pacific nations, which, despite contributing less than 1% of all global  emissions, are experiencing some of the most severe consequences. Warmer oceans, typhoons and coral bleaching threaten delicate ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. Mikayla points out that Palau has limited resources for mitigation projects and the need for support from the larger emitters is critical. The discussion also covers Palau's proactive measures, including a government climate policy, codeveloped by EY teams and Mikayla's team, that integrates traditional Palauan marine conservation practices. This episode is a testament to the resilience of island nations and the critical role of collaboration in forging a path toward a sustainable future. Listen to understand the challenges faced by Palau, the innovative strategies they employ, and the lessons they offer to the world in the fight against climate change. © 2024 Ernst & Young LLP

The Republic of Palau, in the central pacific, is a core strategic partner of the United States. The deep and close relationship, born in the blood of World War II battles, is formalized in the Compact of Free Association (COFA). The agreement means Palauans can serve in the U.S. military and live and work in the United States. The COFA also grants the U.S. extensive and unique defense oversight in Palauan territory, including the right of strategic denial: access that is an imperative part of the U.S. defense architecture in the Pacific. Additionally, Palau recognizes Taiwan. All this combines to make Palau a major target of Beijing's influence operations as they aim to force a derecognition of Taiwan and pressure them to move away from the United States. With the sensitive COFA renegotiation underway, Palauan President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. is in Washington and has agreed to sit down with FDD Non-Resident Senior Fellow Cleo Paskal and FDD Senior Vice President Jonathan Schanzer to discuss the U.S.-Palau relationship and details on the great power battle taking place in the Pacific Islands.

Hello, is this Pizza Hut? Excellent. My name is Ben Shapiro. Conservative thought leader. Prominent white YouTuber. The Muggsy Bogues of the intellectual dark Web. And—look, it's just a fact—I would like to order some pizza pie. If you are triggered by that request, I do not care. I truly do not. Now let's discuss conditions. First, thank you for agreeing to debate me. Typically, in fora such as this, I am met with ad-hominem mudslinging, anything from “You racist creep” or “Is that your real voice?” to raucous schoolyard laughter and threats of the dreaded “toilet swirly.” However, your willingness to engage with me over the phone on the subject of pizza shows an intellectual fortitude and openness to dangerous ideas which reflects highly on your character. Huzzah, good sir. Huzzah. Second, any pizza I order will be male. None of this “Our pizza identifies as trans-fluid-pan-poly”—no. Pizza is a boy. With a penis. It's that simple. It's been true for all of human history, from Plato to Socrates to Mr. Mistoffelees, and any attempt to rewrite the pillars of Western thought will be met with a hearty “Fuh!” by yours truly. And, trust me, that is not a fate you wish to meet. Now. With regard to my topping preference. I have eaten from your pizzeria in times past, and it must be said: your pepperoni is embarrassingly spicy. Frankly, it boggles the mind. I mean, what kind of drugs are you inhaling over there? Pot?! One bite of that stuff and I had to take a shower. So tread lightly when it comes to spice, my good man. You do not want to see me at my most epic. Like the great white hero of Zack Snyder's classic film “300,” I will kick you. Onions, peppers—no, thank you. If I wanted veggies, I'd go to a salad bar. I'm not some sort of vegan, Cory Booker weirdo. And your efforts to Michelle Obama-ize the great American pizza pie are, frankly, hilarious. Though not as funny as the impressively named P'Zone—when I finally figured out that genuinely creative pun, I laughed until I cried and peed. A true Spartan admits defeat, and I must admit that, in this instance, your Hut humor slayed me, Dennis Miller style. And, with that, you have earned my order. Congratulations. Ahem. Without further ado, I would like your smallest child pizza, no sauce, extra cheese. Hello? Aha. A hang-up. Another triggered lib, bested by logic. Damn it. I'm fucking starving.   I think that it's ok to be sexually aroused by Pokemon. More so, I think it should be encouraged in the games and anime, and GameFreak should lean into it. Firstly, some Pokemon are shown to be much smarter then humans. Kadabra has been said to have an IQ over 5000, which is gigantically more than the definition of an animal, which have an IQ between 0 (Worms and Fish) and 65 (Apes and Octopus). Thus, they are smarter then needed to be able to give consent. Secondly, the argument could be made they are not as empathetic as humans, and thus can't give consent. This is proven not to be true numerous times in the anime, by watching Meowth. In Season 2, Episode 16 of the Pokemon show, it is established that he is no smarter or different then regular Pokemon, he simply learnt to walk by watching a dance rehearsal and later learnt English through a picture book. Throughout the following seasons, it's shown how he schemes, laughs, cries and even at points, deceives people into thinking he is a human (in order to steal Ash's Pikachu of course). And the last piece of damning evidence - a folk tale in the Canalave Library (Pokémon Diamond and Pearl) literally STATES that humans used to marry Pokémon. This was removed in the English translation. Gamefreak, if you wanted us to fuck Pokémon, just say it. Conclusively, Pokemon aren't animals. They are intelligent, with empathy and kindness, and should be treated as equals. Denying them the right to have sex with humans removes their freedom, which is racist, and frankly, unamerican.   An Afghan, an Albanian, an Algerian, an American, an Andorran, an Angolan, an Antiguans, an Argentine, an Armenian, an Australian, an Austrian, an Azerbaijani, a Bahamian, a Bahraini, a Bangladeshi, a Barbadian, a Barbudans, a Batswanan, a Belarusian, a Belgian, a Belizean, a Beninese, a Bhutanese, a Bolivian, a Bosnian, a Brazilian, a Brit, a Bruneian, a Bulgarian, a Burkinabe, a Burmese, a Burundian, a Cambodian, a Cameroonian, a Canadian, a Cape Verdean, a Central African, a Chadian, a Chilean, a Chinese, a Colombian, a Comoran, a Congolese, a Costa Rican, a Croatian, a Cuban, a Cypriot, a Czech, a Dane, a Djibouti, a Dominican, a Dutchman, an East Timorese, an Ecuadorean, an Egyptian, an Emirian, an Equatorial Guinean, an Eritrean, an Estonian, an Ethiopian, a Fijian, a Filipino, a Finn, a Frenchman, a Gabonese, a Gambian, a Georgian, a German, a Ghanaian, a Greek, a Grenadian, a Guatemalan, a Guinea-Bissauan, a Guinean, a Guyanese, a Haitian, a Herzegovinian, a Honduran, a Hungarian, an I-Kiribati, an Icelander, an Indian, an Indonesian, an Iranian, an Iraqi, an Irishman, an Israeli, an Italian, an Ivorian, a Jamaican, a Japanese, a Jordanian, a Kazakhstani, a Kenyan, a Kittian and Nevisian, a Kuwaiti, a Kyrgyz, a Laotian, a Latvian, a Lebanese, a Liberian, a Libyan, a Liechtensteiner, a Lithuanian, a Luxembourger, a Macedonian, a Malagasy, a Malawian, a Malaysian, a Maldivan, a Malian, a Maltese, a Marshallese, a Mauritanian, a Mauritian, a Mexican, a Micronesian, a Moldovan, a Monacan, a Mongolian, a Moroccan, a Mosotho, a Motswana, a Mozambican, a Namibian, a Nauruan, a Nepalese, a New Zealander, a Nicaraguan, a Nigerian, a Nigerien, a North Korean, a Northern Irishman, a Norwegian, an Omani, a Pakistani, a Palauan, a Palestinian, a Panamanian, a Papua New Guinean, a Paraguayan, a Peruvian, a Pole, a Portuguese, a Qatari, a Romanian, a Russian, a Rwandan, a Saint Lucian, a Salvadoran, a Samoan, a San Marinese, a Sao Tomean, a Saudi, a Scottish, a Senegalese, a Serbian, a Seychellois, a Sierra Leonean, a Singaporean, a Slovakian, a Slovenian, a Solomon Islander, a Somali, a South African, a South Korean, a Spaniard, a Sri Lankan, a Sudanese, a Surinamer, a Swazi, a Swede, a Swiss, a Syrian, a Tajik, a Tanzanian, a Togolese, a Tongan, a Trinidadian or Tobagonian, a Tunisian, a Turk, a Tuvaluan, a Ugandan, a Ukrainian, a Uruguayan, a Uzbekistani, a Venezuelan, a Vietnamese, a Welshman, a Yemenite, a Zambian and a Zimbabwean all go to a bar.. H. E. President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. is the 10th President of the Republic of Palau ( https://www.palaugov.pw/executive-branch/president/ ). President Whipps was formerly a two-term Senator having served in the 8th and 9th Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK, Palau National Congress) from 2009 through 2016. His Senate report card maintains his reputable record in policy making to promote and protect the best interests of Palauans, including: conducting more than 100 oversight hearings to promote transparency and accountability in delivery of government services, spearheading the first bill introduced in the 9th OEK that became law to increase the minimum wage since its enactment in 1997, and most recently, balancing Palau's focus on developing and promoting human resources and fostering their economy, while striking a balance in the protection of the environment, putting the Palauan people first. Prior to his career in politics, President Whipps had over 30 years of private sector experience managing one of the largest growing companies in Palau. As CEO and president of the Surangel and Sons Company, he led the expansion from a one floor store with 50 employees, to a diversified company employing over six-hundred people. President Whipps grew up in a family business that started with his parents improvising to sustain their living by opening a restaurant, fishing and selling their catch, taking tourists out to the rock islands and diving, and selling goods out of their house. President Whipps' experience is combined with his formal background earning a bachelor's degree in Business Administration in economics from Andrews University in Michigan and an MBA from Anderson Graduate School of Management at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). President Whippsʻ slogan - “A Kot a Rechand er Belau” (Palauan People First) actually originated from his father, who was active in the Save Palau movement to protect Palauʻs marine resources, and who ran for congress many times before being elected. In response to unfair treatment in the workplace, lack of career opportunities for Palauans, challenges hindering young Palauan entrepreneurs, and the unchecked exploitation of Palauʻs national resources, the slogan represented conviction that Palauans must reap the opportunities Palau has to offer, and the commitment to push for the improved welfare of Palauans to be foremost in their country by their government.

Nostalgia is the word that comes to my mind every time I remember this story. This was one of the stories I grew up listening to. Growing up before I went to school I had to stay with my grandparents in Aimeliik during week days and this story was one of our favorites from my grandma. I remember how we used to sleep/camp in the living room and grandma would tell us this stroy. I was always so fascinated with the witch's house that was made out of cakes and candies and cookies and all that yummy goodness; lol. That was pretty much the part that stuck with me. But now as an adult, especially as a mom this was hard to read because I cannot imagine being with someone who despises my kid to a point where they would talk me into pretty much abandoning my child in the middle of the nowhere to fend for herself simply because we were so poor we didn't have enough food to eat. Yes I know its just a story but that doesn't make it any less painful to think about. Personally I think the lesson of the story is, Be kind! Be nice! Do unto others as you would have them do unto you! Thank you for you support always. Much love and Aloha. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/adria680/support

This story is about a young woman who turned into a Dugong. She and her mother lived in Kerdeu in Ngerielb, a hamlet in Koror and they were very poor; way back then in Palau it was very taboo for an unmarried woman to become pregnant or have a child out of wedlock but somehow the young woman fell pregnant. Her mother was so sad upon learning about her daughter's pregnancy because they were already very poor as it is, and so she reminded her daughter that she had to take very good care of her health and pregnancy because there would be no one to take care of them or help them if they ever got sick. So the young woman obeyed her mother's advice and had a healthy pregnancy and delivery; she gave birth to a baby girl. After she gave birth her mother warned her not to eat "keam" (Tahitian Chestnut) because it was not good for a woman who had just given birth as it causes bloating but "keam" was one of her favorites. Still, she obeyed her mother's advice until one day when her mother went out to the taro patches to get taro for their family and her daughter just could not contain her cravings anymore and so she figured that she would just eat one and her mother won't know about it. She took a "keam" and she cut it in half and as she started to eat it she was startled by her mother, and upon seeing her mother she immediately put her down he daughter and just walked out of the house leaving both her mother and her daughter. The mother then picked up the baby and started to follow her daughter trying to call her name and trying to get her to stop and go back home but the daughter just kept on going not stopping, and when she reached the dock she jumped straight into the water. Her mother stood at the dock cradling the baby and saying to her daughter, "My daughter, you never listened to what I said, and now you're leaving. Do you not have pity on us?" When the daughter surfaced she had turned into a Dugong and so the mother said her final words to her, " You won't listen to what I say and now you're leaving so now you will be bought for a dollar which will be a marriage payment to a wife's family." Way back then Palauans used to hunt Dugongs not only because they were good food but because their vertebrae were used to be made into a bracelet for the children of the royal family. So when you hunt a Dugong and talk about killing them in their face they would cry and shed tears and so Palauan back they believed that Dugongs were human once that is why they feel emotions and shed tears. The moral of the story is that we should always listen to our parents because they know what they're talking about, they have been in our shoes at some point in their lives. They remind and teach us because they care about us and they love us so they don't want us to get hurt or get in trouble. Most of the time when we want something so much we are blinded by our wants and desires that we don't realize that we could hurt ourselves as well as others. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/adria680/support

This mini series highlights the issues going on in the world today regarding racial tensions and injustice, and explores how they intersect with the mission field. Dylan Tellei brings the intelligent perspective of a Palauan student, and how his observations and realizations brought him to a place where he would identify a key trait that tends to be absent when it comes to racial issues and injustice. Then, at 18:30, Josh and Ryan combine their strong male energy to discuss an unexpected turn in Melania's "#BeBest" campaign, America's relationship with Saudi Arabia, and the cataclysmic death of our planet. She tells us about working in Micronesian politics and growing up in an activist family (actual quote: "I knew the word 'decolonize' before I quite knew how to read"), and we discuss her #BeingMicronesian twitter thread that was picked up by Civil Beat and is making headlines around the world. Our restaurant recs are Umeke Market, Jun Bo Chinese Restaurants, Coquito's Latin Cuisine Restaurant, Bravo/Anna Miller's, and Papa's Cafe. It’s safe to say that a vast majority of the interviews broadcasted on Native ExPat Radio over the last two years have basically been casual phone call recordings. And, for some reason, this has worked out really well for the station! After some consideration, I thought “Why not just make that my standard talk show format?” Which then became “Hey, what if I produced an actual series of shows based on phone calls?” And so I did. And we launched with one of my favorite interviews so far– with special guest Jim Geselbracht! If you aren’t familiar with Mr. Geselbracht, I highly recommend visiting his blog OUCHACHA: Musings on Palauan cha-cha and other musical forms. You can find links at our website: www.merirei.com
