Angel Mason, Athletic Director for Berry College, joins Glenn on the Field for the next segment of the series, “The Truth Behind Playing D-I, D-II, D-3, JUCO, and HBCU Sports”. Angel discusses what it's really like being a student athlete at a D-3 program, the benefits of playing D-3 athletics, and how D-3 programs are just as competitive as D-I and D-II schools. Angel shares the eligibility and recruiting process for D-3 sports, what D-3 coaches are looking for in their athletes, the negative reputation that is often associated with D-3 sports, and why athletes should never feel that non-DI sports aren't high quality collegiate athletics. She also discusses how D-3 athletes can finance their education, the typical day of a D-3 athlete, and how to get drafted to play professional sports from a D-3 school. Angel also shares how to determine if D-3 athletics is the right fit for your athletic talent and dispels the misconceptions often associated with D-3 programs. Dan & Paul discuss experiences in TRPGs when players don't know the rules. Is it fundamentally fair or unfair? Does it add to the immersion of the roleplay? What added flexibility dos it give to the GM? Is exploring the rules of a new world an essential part of roleplaying games, that we've lost along the way? Games with concealed rules are games where the rules are intentionally concealed from new players, either because their discovery is part of the game itself, or because the game is a hoax and the rules do not exist. In fiction, the counterpart of the first category are games that supposedly do have a rule set, but that rule set is not disclosed. For example: Paranoia is a tabletop role-playing game in which the rules are considered "classified". Only the Gamemaster has full knowledge of the rules, while other players must deduce them by trial and error as they proceed through the game. The game acknowledges that players may read the gamemaster section, but demonstrating knowledge of the rules is considered treasonous, and the gamemaster may also make arbitrary changes. In this episode I am joined by an old friend from my college days to talk about how playing D&D over the internet has helped keep our friendship active. We talk a bit about what tools are out there to help people play D&D online as well as the benefits that playing online can have over playing in person. Tools we discuss: zoom.us, meet.google.com, discord.gg, roll20.com, vorpalboard.com, dndbeyond.com (if anyone out there works with these companies and wants to sponsor us I am not above shilling) Email: dnd4noobs@gmail.com Twitter: @dnd4noobs Instagram: dnd4noobs --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Having discussed how Michael broke into the business at age six with his Rosanne audition and what it was like working on one of televisions all time greatest shows for a nine year run, we pick up right where we left off last time. Michael looks back sharing his opinions why he think Roseanne was not only such a critical and ratings darling for its entire run but will forever go down in history as one of the shows that changed the face of TV as we know it. Michael opens up about his “lean years” after the show ended, how he didn’t hear from family members Rosanne Barr, Laurie Metcalf, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, and Lecy Goranson as often as he expected, how he got a fast education once he returned to public high school and various odd jobs both in and outside the entertainment business and how playing the part of D.J. Conner for nine years led to a “typecasting” that proved not always an easy feat to secure new roles. Then one day John Goodman appeared on Sara Gilbert’s “The Talk” and everything changed. Within two months, the entire original fast had signed on the dotted line and “Roseanne, The Reboot” was official. Having premiered to insanely stellar numbers, all was great with the world and the family was back together. Not so fast. One viral tweet from Roseanne, would change all that! Just like that, The Reboot was cancelled, the public reacted, Michael issued a statement, Roseanne responded, and…. We discuss the psychology and mental state of what it was like for Michael to get hired for Roseanne, lose his job as D.J. Conner in an instant after Roseanne’s tweets, make an official public statement denouncing the tweets (and including his own views on diversity and inclusion), hearing from Roseanne (publicly) in response to his statements hint: she was not happy, and the “fall out” (however temporary or permanent) of a very close friendship with Roseanne, a woman who was like a second mom and saw him grow up. Confused, Dazed, Shocked and many more adjectives - we emotionally go through the full trajectory of emotions, as well as the exact timeline associated with those emotions. Emotions which then included a job offer to “reprise his role”, immediately, in The Conners. It has been a rollercoaster of a ride to present day, present season of The Conners and Michael is here to share it all as we conclude our Two Part chat with the actor behind the iconic role of D.J. Roseanne’s / The Conners' Michael Fishman steps Behind The Rope. Little D.J. Conner all grown up. Let us start at the beginning. Cast at the young age of six, Michael began his acting career when Roseanne Barr herself fought for him to play D.J Conner despite any lack of formal training or experience. Michael discusses what it was like being the youngest on a set that included Roseanne, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf and Lecy Goranson. Michael recalls the best and worst times during Roseanne’s original nine year run from 1988-1997, one of the worst being the death threats the cast received after Roseanne “performed” The National Anthem that was heard around the world. The “best" is the “family” that Michael inherited plus lots of fun guest stars such as Leo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Sandra Bernhard, Sharon Stone, and Bruce Willis, to name a few. Nostalgia at its best, Michael describes what it was lit to be on a TV show that became a worldwide global hit overnight and had stellar ratings throughout the years. He also discusses the concept of fame and when he first became aware that he was and how “strange” it was as a child to be asked for your autograph. On a more serious note, Michael opens up about the misconceptions of being on one of America’s top rated and critically acclaimed television shows for nine years - that you are making tons of money and will never have to work again, that you can easily find work in another role when the party ends and that everyone in the “family” will keep in touch when the lights fade. Tune in to Part I of this very special two part sit down with one of TV’s permanent fixtures on our screens throughout the years, Michael Fishman.@reelmfishman@behindvelvetrope@davidyontefBonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetropeBrought to you by Mint Mobile https://www.mintmobile.com/velvetropeBrought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetropeMerch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Top-10 Takeaways - Season 1, Episode 18: The Podfather Matt Kelley (@Fantasy_Mansion) has ten critical observations from the first round of the NFL Playoffs. Cole Beasley, Alvin Kamara, and Taylor Heinicke were playoff heroes. Derrick Henry finally played a defense was not just making "business decisions." Cam Akers vs. Darrell Henderson is not a debate. Leonard Fournette is not dead yet. Playing D.K. Metcalf vs. Jalen Ramsey was excellent DFS process. A.J. Brown is a true alpha. Avoid Corey Davis as if he is radioactive. Chase Claypool will be overvalued next season. What makes a great djent riff? Two things: the right notes, with the right polymeter. So in this video you'll learn all that, plus you'll learn how to make your riffs stand out by adding a second melody into the same riff. But first… tea! DOWNLOAD PDF + WAV + MIDI FROM THIS VIDEO Hello revolutionary music makers, we are Kate Harmony and Ray Harmony (AKA Revolution Harmony), and welcome to Hack Music Theory. We help you make great music that stands out, so you can move and grow your audience! If that sounds useful to you, then subscribe to our YouTube channel and hit that bell to get notified every Thursday, when we publish our new video. Alright, let's jump in... THEORYProg metal legends PERIPHERY just dropped their new single “Garden in the Bones”, and it's brilliant! This song is overflowing with stunning melodies, mesmerizing riffs, captivating polymeters, epic grooves, and the most massive chorus! “Garden in the Bones” launches directly into the first verse, which contains a slower polymetric riff with lots of rests. But, instead of playing it on one note (like so many djent riffs), or using super dissonant intervals (like so many other djent riffs), Periphery play a refreshingly consonant group of notes, which would be right at home in any popular music genre. Then, as if that's not enough, when the second verse comes around, it's not just a copy and paste of the first verse. No, it's a continuation; the next chapter of an unfolding story. They achieve this by adding notes to the original riff, in place of the rests. This creates a 2-in-1 riff consisting of the original riff as the bass voice, and the new notes as a melody on top. SETUPAlright, now you're gonna learn how to use this theory to make your own version. So, start by setting up one bar of 15/4, with your grid set to 1/8 notes, and your tempo set to 135 BPM. Periphery use F♯ Dorian for their verses, so we'll use it too. STEP 1. VERSE 1First things first, F♯ Dorian consists of the notes: F♯ G♯ A B C♯ D♯ E, so you can use any of those notes in your riff. Now, start on the root note (F♯), then skip two 1/8 notes, and then play a note. Next, skip another two 1/8 notes, and then play two notes. Then do that again: skip two 1/8 notes, and then play two notes. And lastly, skip another two 1/8 notes, and then play one last note. When you're choosing your notes, keep it simple (and keep it low), and think of them as an implied chord progression. Also, use a B somewhere, but more on that later. Right, now you have your 15/8 riff, so repeat it once to complete the bar of 15/4. Finally, add the root note (F♯) on beat 9. This is such a clever trick of Periphery's, cos what that one extra note does, is ingeniously disguise the odd 15/8 time signature. You see, the root note is the home of your scale, so it's the strongest note. And by playing the strongest note on beat 9, it pulls the ear back to that 1/4 note pulse (cos in 4/4, beat 9 is actually beat 1 of bar 3). Also, the drummer is playing 1/4 notes on his china cymbal, so that pulse is really powerful. And that pulse, along with the root note on beat 9, tricks the listener into feeling this as 4/4, right until the end of the riff where it's finally revealed that there's a 1/4 note missing (cos in four bars of 4/4 there are sixteen 1/4 notes, but here there are only fifteen). This polymeter makes the riff sound far simpler (and therefore more accessible) than it actually is. That's very clever! So to sum up. The polymeter is occurring between the guitar and the drums. The guitar is playing two bars of 15/8 over the drums that are playing three bars of 4/4 and one bar of 3/4. This all adds up to one cycle of the polymeter, which is equal to one bar of 15/4. STEP 2. VERSE 2Right, this is where things get extra tasty. You're now gonna use the first verse riff as a bass voice, and you're gonna add a new voice on top of it in place of all the rests. This creates a riff that can still be played on one guitar, but now it sounds like there's two guitars playing, cos there are two melodies (one low, and one high). Okay, so remember in Step 1 we mentioned that you should think of the notes in your bass voice as an implied chord progression? Well now it's time to flesh out that harmony. For example, Periphery's second verse riff implies some dreamy add9 harmonies, so if you want that vibe as well, then be sure to play a 2 over a couple chords (e.g. over the implied F♯m, the 2 is G♯). And as you're writing the high melody in your riff, be sure to play a D♯ over the B in your bass voice. Playing D♯ over B creates the unique Dorian sound, so without that D♯, you won't get the sad-but-hopeful Dorian mood that we all love. And that's why in Step 1, we said play a B. And by the way, if you wanna know everything you need to know about Dorian and the other modes, then download our Songwriting & Producing PDF. NEXTOkay, so now that you've got your first and second verses down, how do you write the other sections? And then, how do you transition between all the sections (especially when they're in different keys)? And then, how do you structure and arrange your song? Well, these are issues that all songwriters and producers struggle with in the beginning, and that's exactly why we made our online apprenticeship course. So, if you wanna overcome these obstacles once and for all, then our course is definitely for you! What makes a great djent riff? Two things: the right notes, with the right polymeter. So in this video you’ll learn all that, plus you’ll learn how to make your riffs stand out by adding a second melody into the same riff. Alright, let’s jump in... THEORYProg metal legends PERIPHERY just dropped their new single “Garden in the Bones”, and it’s brilliant! Then, as if that’s not enough, when the second verse comes around, it’s not just a copy and paste of the first verse. No, it’s a continuation; the next chapter of an unfolding story. They achieve this by adding notes to the original riff, in place of the rests. This creates a 2-in-1 riff consisting of the original riff as the bass voice, and the new notes as a melody on top. SETUPAlright, now you’re gonna learn how to use this theory to make your own version. So, start by setting up one bar of 15/4, with your grid set to 1/8 notes, and your tempo set to 135 BPM. Periphery use F♯ Dorian for their verses, so we’ll use it too. When you’re choosing your notes, keep it simple (and keep it low), and think of them as an implied chord progression. Also, use a B somewhere, but more on that later. Right, now you have your 15/8 riff, so repeat it once to complete the bar of 15/4. Finally, add the root note (F♯) on beat 9. This is such a clever trick of Periphery’s, cos what that one extra note does, is ingeniously disguise the odd 15/8 time signature. You see, the root note is the home of your scale, so it’s the strongest note. And by playing the strongest note on beat 9, it pulls the ear back to that 1/4 note pulse (cos in 4/4, beat 9 is actually beat 1 of bar 3). Also, the drummer is playing 1/4 notes on his china cymbal, so that pulse is really powerful. And that pulse, along with the root note on beat 9, tricks the listener into feeling this as 4/4, right until the end of the riff where it’s finally revealed that there’s a 1/4 note missing (cos in four bars of 4/4 there are sixteen 1/4 notes, but here there are only fifteen). This polymeter makes the riff sound far simpler (and therefore more accessible) than it actually is. That’s very clever! You’re now gonna use the first verse riff as a bass voice, and you’re gonna add a new voice on top of it in place of all the rests. This creates a riff that can still be played on one guitar, but now it sounds like there’s two guitars playing, cos there are two melodies (one low, and one high). Okay, so remember in Step 1 we mentioned that you should think of the notes in your bass voice as an implied chord progression? Well now it’s time to flesh out that harmony. For example, Periphery’s second verse riff implies some dreamy add9 harmonies, so if you want that vibe as well, then be sure to play a 2 over a couple chords (e.g. over the implied F♯m, the 2 is G♯). And as you’re writing the high melody in your riff, be sure to play a D♯ over the B in your bass voice. Playing D♯ over B creates the unique Dorian sound, so without that D♯, you won’t get the sad-but-hopeful Dorian mood that we all love. And that’s why in Step 1, we said play a B. And by the way, if you wanna know everything you need to know about Dorian and the other modes, then download our Songwriting & Producing PDF. NEXTOkay, so now that you’ve got your first and second verses down, how do you write the other sections? And then, how do you transition between all the sections (especially when they’re in different keys)? And then, how do you structure and arrange your song? Well, these are issues that all songwriters and producers struggle with in the beginning, and that’s exactly why we made our online apprenticeship course. So, if you wanna overcome these obstacles once and for all, then our course is definitely for you!
