Even though most of us no longer ride horses or mend our own clothes, the analogy of a task being, "like trying to find a needle in a haystack" has cemented itself as a timeless way to convey both difficulty and monotony. But as my guest today argues, if it's your efforts at Self-Improvement that have begun to feel like looking for a needle in a haystack, there's a good chance there's not a needle in the first place. Ryan Christensen is a veteran and author with more than two decades of expertise in intelligence operations and certifications in advanced hypnosis. He now works with high-achievers and neurodivergent professionals to shift their subconscious, helping them discover new working models of belief constructions.Ryan recently published “Winner Peace: How to End Inner Conflict and Make Success Inevitable”., and in it he pushes back against many of the assumptions we carry into our self-help journeys - some of which we've even talked about before on this very podcast. We discuss the myth that there is no finish line to improvement, what it means to feel like our emotions are happening TO us, and why so many of us fear the question, "Who am I?".Enjoy the show!Show-Notes____________________Ryan's YouTube Channel

“Negative emotions aren't actually pain; they are your mind asking for help to solve a problem.” In this episode, Nick speaks with Ryan Christensen, a hypnotist and author, about his journey through childhood struggles, mental health challenges, and the impact of autism on his life. Ryan shares his experiences with suicidal thoughts at a young age, his military service, and the eventual diagnosis of autism and bipolar disorder. The conversation delves into the complexities of trauma, emotional beliefs, and the importance of understanding the root causes of personal struggles rather than just addressing symptoms. What To Listen For: Emotions should be viewed as requests for help, not pain. The narrative we create about our experiences shapes our beliefs. Addressing root causes is more effective than treating symptoms. Self-awareness is crucial for personal growth and healing. Context plays a significant role in how we process emotions. Life is a game, and we can learn from every level we navigate. “Problems are easy to solve once you know what the problem is. The hard part is figuring out the problem.” Identifying the root cause is half the battle in problem-solving. Clarity makes challenges feel more manageable and less overwhelming. Taking time to pinpoint the real issue prevents wasted effort on surface solutions. Self-awareness and reflection are crucial tools for uncovering hidden problems. When the problem becomes clear, the solution often reveals itself naturally. “The number one thing you can do is be curious. Ask questions, listen to yourself, and own all the crap you don't like about yourself until you fix it.” Curiosity is a powerful tool for self-growth and transformation. Honest self-reflection leads to breakthroughs and lasting change. Listening to your intuition helps you spot what's truly holding you back. Owning your flaws isn't weakness—it's the first step toward fixing them. Staying curious keeps you open to possibilities and unexpected solutions. When we stop beating ourselves up and start helping ourselves instead, we find the peace we've always wanted—but never thought possible. Most of us are trying to succeed our way out of insecurity. But it never ends. This is the fundamental problem of all high achievers: our desire to get more, win bigger, be better, and prove once and for all we're good enough is not enough. Proving anything to your satisfaction is a rational process. But feeling like we're not good enough is an emotional conclusion. And the emotional mind ignores rational proof. Feelings don't care about your facts, so no matter how hard you push or how much you win, victory is only fleeting. Ultimately, this creates obsession, then exhaustion. It doesn't even feel good to finish anymore. It only feels good to work. That's not good.

Join me and Ryan Christensen from hypnosisformen.net as we uncover ways men create train wrecks out of life from anxiety & the self sabotage that follows. Our talking points include, but aren't limited to... - A lot of guys who are in this part of the web are looking for answers, and looking to change their lives. - A lot of these guys are struggling with anxiety, depression, and other self-sabotaging behaviors. - There's a lot of good material out there designed to get guys taking action: "Do The Work", how to overcome approach anxiety, etc. - Those mechanisms will generally work well for most guys who have previously had success, or who already have embraced being uncomfortable. - Other men struggle with higher levels of anxiety, have failed more often in the past. They're carrying a lot more baggage. - For men like that, "get over it" isn't effective advice. Most behavior or habit based methods require willpower for a time that they simply don't have due to a long history of things that have failed. - In other cases, there's a pattern of self sabotage - think of starting stuff and walking away, or deliberately choosing targets you can't hit ("I only go after 9s and 10s even though I'm a 3") - In both instances there's an unconscious pattern at work designed to keep them from harm in some manner - even if it's keeping them in a shitty place or keeping them from what they want consciously - In men that suffer from those issues, the unconscious mind is less open to change because it has a much more evidence of possible harm, and weights it much more highly - So unless they have constant support it's hard to make change. This could be in person coaching and in field support, therapy, etc. Online communities only help so much. - Hypnosis on the other hand works directly on that unconscious level, and bypass the critical factor. The critical factor is that filter between the conscious and unconscious mind that determines what the unconscious will accept as true. - Because of this, we can rapidly figure out where that anxiety or self sabotage originates, and what it's trying to do to help that person - Once that happens, we can create new solutions to those old problems that get them better results. - In addition, it's common to release a lot of built up trauma, anger, etc that's being carried around. That creates a lot more space and energy, so doing things becomes a LOT easier.

Friday night saw some tremendous action around the country, but most of it centered in Big Ten Country. That’s right, to hell with your high school football playoffs - except for Poquoson - Go Islanders - it’s wrestling season and we had some fun stuff on Friday night. This is Short Time Shots, a sometimes relevant look at the day’s scores and more in college wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant and Schell’s Firebrick might be my second favorite beer. My favorite beer sits across the border in Wisconsin. It’s called Spotted Cow. Speaking of Wisconsin, they Badgers and Chris Bono were wild and crazy on Friday night as they went to Lincoln and knocked off No. 12 Nebraska 22-21 on criteria. It was Coach Bono’s first Big Ten win as the Badgers head coach and it was all sorts of crazy. First off, Ryan Christensen rallied from a 6-4 third-period deficit to pin Nebraska’s Mikey Labriola with just a couple of ticks left on the clock at 174 pounds. Every point would count here as an excited Chris Bono was docked a team point for control of mat area. Another key bonus victory came at 125 pounds as Zeke Moisey benefitted from a quick injury default win over Connor Brown. Brown rolled his ankle in Moisey’s first attack of the match, and then tried to restart the bout. That didn’t happen and Nebraska went up 18-12 with just three weights to go. Jens Lantz came through for the Badgers at 133, delivering what could be the most relevant victory of his college career, a 10-3 win over Tucker Sjomeling. Then six more points came as 141 pound Tristan Moran pinned Nebraska reserve Christian Miller in the first period to give the Badgers a 21-18 lead heading 149. This one was wild. Cole Martin nearly ended it for the Badgers with a cradle, but then Collin Purinton turned the tables and nearly pinned Martin, which would have given the Huskers the win. Purinton got the W, but it was the second criteria - most falls that gave Bono and company the W. Oh, we didn’t even talk about the most anticipated match of the night - Evan Wick beat Isaiah White 12-5. Wick did it with only two takedowns and no nearfall points. Next time, me thinks White will NOT be taking down when he has choice as Wick drew three stall points while working on top at 165. No. 2 Ohio State ventured west and pounded Cal Baptist 42-0 in front of over 3,000 fans in Riverside, California. As I’ve mentioned on this show previously, Cal Baptist began its four-year transitional period to Division I this year and the Lancers aren’t hiding with a soft schedule. No. 3 Iowa hosted Princeton in just the second meeting between the two programs and the first in 17 years. The night started off with a highly anticipated matchup between returning national champion Spencer Lee of Iowa and Princeton’s highly regarded true freshman Pat Glory. Lee blew the doors off Glory, getting up 14-0 at one point before finishing off the technical fall in the second period. Back-to-back falls by Austin DeSanto and Max Murin fired up the strong, focused and energized crowd at Carver-Hawkeye. Top-ranked Matt Kolodzik got Princeton on the board with a gritty 7-4 win over Pat Lugo, avenging a defeat from last year. Iowa also picked up a fall from Alex Marinelli at 165 pounds. No. 7 Missouri and No. 10 Virginia Tech didn’t really have much of a thriller, despite some matches being close. The Tigers won their 22nd straight dual, topping the Hokies 21-8. The biggest win of the night sent many fans in Last Man Standing contests to the showers early as Connor Flynn knocked off Mekhi Lewis 8-6 at 165 pounds. The other two matchup of ranked wrestlers both went Mizzou’s way as John Erneste beat Korbin Myers at 133 and Grant Leeth beat Ryan Blees 3-1 at 149. No. 9 Cornell wasn’t tested in a 36-6 win over Binghamton in EIWA action. No. 20 North Dakota State survived an upset attempt in California as the Bison had to get a major decision from 125-pounder Brent Fleetwood to beat Fresno State 21-20. No. 23 Rutgers pounded Hofstra 40-3, giving coach Scott Goodale his 166th career victory as the Scarlet Knights head coach, tying former coach John Sacchi for first on the all-time coaching list in New Brunswick - or is it Piscataway? In Division II, Pitt-Johnstown stopped Millersville 30-6, while Ohio Valley beat NAIA West Virginia Tech 27-24 in a matchup of two West Virginia programs. The Mark Rial era in Storm Lake started out well as Buena Vista went up to Minnesota and beat St. John’s 31-13 to give the new Beavers coach his first head coaching win. Washington & Lee, that’s Dubya-N-Ell for those in that part of Virginia, beat Southern Virginia 36-9 in a crosstown scrap. The two schools are six miles apart - and get this - Southern Virginia is in Buena Vista … Virginia. In the NAIA, the Fire of Southeastern topped Campbellsville 27-12 in Mid-South Conference action. Wins by Jason Davis, Jesse Pryor and Silas Root closed things out for coach Javier Maldonado’s squad. In junior college action, the Clackamas win streak continues. The Cougars knocked off North Idaho 34-3 to extend its win streak to 41 in row! Oh, it’s about that time, it’s about that time, it’s ABOUT THAT TIME! The whistles of college wrestling season didn’t actually blow for the first time on Thursday night, they actually started in September with the California Community Colleges. But the four-year programs and the rest of the junior colleges got underway this week and this is your daily dose of the wrestling scores and more, that’s right, it’s Short Time Shots, the coffee you need for your morning wrestling commute, I’m your host Jason Bryant. Yes, I’m stunned I still have a voice after Budapest. The first Division I dual of the season saw the Chris Bono regime in Madison start with a victory. The 18th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers won four of the last five bouts to pull away from a scrappy Buffalo team 25-12. Connor Brown opened up the dual with a fall, Ben Askren-style, who was actually calling the action live on Flowrestling. Buffalo’s Bryan Lantry scored a solid win at 141-pounds over transfer Tristan Moran, while All-American Evan Wick started the Badger roll with a 14-1 major decision at 165 pounds. Ryan Christensen, Mason Reinhardt and Trent Hillger finished things off down the stretch for Chris Bono’s new squad. In another geographical indicator that college athletic conferences are still bonkers, West Virginia topped Northern Colorado 22-14 in the Big 12 Conference and season opener for both teams. Tim Flynn’s new team fell behind early, but four straight wins saw the Mountaineers rally for the win, thanks to victories by Matthew Schmitt at 133, Joe Wheeling - which is fitting he wrestles for West Virginia - at 141, Christian Monserrat at 149 and Zach Moore at 157. Moore’s locked up the dual win. And out in California, Manny Rivera and his CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners did some wacky stuff, doing a tri-meet on two mats with three rounds each as San Francisco State and Life Pacific went round-robin in a way that is well, interesting. Life Pacific is a brand-new NAIA program in Southern California while San Francisco State is led by second-year head coach and California native Jason Welch. The Gators have a pretty solid coaching staff too there with Ryan Loder, Dom Kastl and Orry Elor. Runners won big, by the way, topping San Francisco State 38-3 and Life Pacific 38-6. San Francisco State beat Life Pacific 39-6. Let’s go back to the whole “new era thing,” shall we? And we’re not talking Boston Red Sox World Series hats here either, Doug Schwab. The Brett Hamm era opened up in a big way as Cornell College trounced Simpson College 51-0 in a battle of two Iowa Division III programs. As you may know, Mike Duroe, the former Cornell College head coach, lost his battle with brain cancer earlier this year. Sixth-ranked Upper Iowa picked up five forfeits and beat undermanned Truman State 56-0. We’re going to give Truman State a bit of a pass here since coach David Schutter and the program raised enough money to keep the program afloat this year after the school announced it was going to drop the sport. Bulldog faithful raised over $81,000 to keep the program rolling. Division III Millikin opened up its season outside with a 45-6 win over NAIA Hannibal-LaGrange. The Big Blue, yes, the BIG BLUE earned seven bonus victories and a forfeit to cruise in their season opener. Keeping it D3, Delaware Valley got up 26-0 after five matches, but actually had to hang on 29-20 over Penn College. Kyle Hillermeier’s win at 184 pounds finally iced it for the Aggies. Division III Alma beat Davenport in a battle of two of Bloodround’s favorite schools in Michigan. Alma’s Jacob Ransom topped Davenport’s Weston DeHaven 7-0 at 285 pounds to give the Scots the 21-16 victory over the Panthers, who are completing their transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. In a dual that featured just three actual individual matches, Arkansas Baptist of the NJCAA topped NAIA Central Baptist 18-15. This isn’t one you really want to promote. Let’s just hope both programs can do a better job of drawing more student-athletes to their respective schools so we don’t have duals with seven forfeits. With some better news in Arkansas, at least for one team, the University of the Ozarks topped Lyon 24-16 in a matchup of two schools from down there. By the way, if you like some dark, twisted stuff - Ozark on Netflix has you covered. I’m almost done with Season 2. Wacky stuff. As far as the dual, well, Ny’Trell Dean had a big fall at 149 to power the Eagles past the Scots. HEY, that’s TWO Scots references tonight - three if you count Tim Flynn, but you can’t count that, since he’s not a Scot anymore. Elsewhere in the NAIA, the Running Eagles of Life beat Truett McConnell 34-10. Omi Acosta has like 90-something wrestlers on his team at Life. Montana State-Northern beat North Idaho 35-3 and in keeping things out west, Clackamas beat Western Wyoming in junior college action 20-18 to extend the Cougars dual meet win streak to 35 in a row. On the women’s side of things, King avenged an early-season loss to Life with a 31-11 win in Marietta. Wins by Ana Luciano at 143 and Rachel Hale at 155 solidified the dual for the Tornado. One of the giant indoor playgrounds reopened tonight. You want to know stress? Take a couple hundred kids under the age of 6 and cramp them all into an indoor playground and watch your blood pressure rise. This is Short Time Shots, a quick look back at the day’s wrestling scores and more, I’m your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant. While this isn’t an every day show, it typically breaks when there’s at least 10 dual meets or events that are worth discussing. That’s just kind of a loose guide. Some days, there might be 3-4 really good ones I want to give you the scoop on. Others, there are a few matches or the results from some of them weren’t reported by the time I sat down and hit record. Before we start, want to thank the latest contributor to the Mat Talk Podcast Network, Ralph Wetzel from Pennsylvania. Thank you kindly sir. You are entered into the drawing for the $150 prize pack from Compound Clothing. Before we get to the scores, the big news today was Presbyterian College, a small Division I school in Clinton, South Carolina is adding a men’s and women’s wrestling program. I had a chance to talk to AD Danny Sterling today for about 40 minutes to talk about the additions and that will be on the next full Short Time Wrestling Podcast on Monday. Presbyterian had a team in the 1940s and 50s. The last team in Division I that started from scratch and wasn’t a quick reinstatement? Utah Valley in 2003. Kind of hard to call Presbyterian a “reinstatement” since they haven’t had a team since Truman. Only one Division I dual on the docket on Thursday and it wasn’t close as No. 19 Wisconsin opened up its Big Ten schedule by smashing Maryland 32-6 in Madison. Big one for the Badgers came at 141 pounds where Eli Stickley majored NCAA qualifier Ryan Diehl of Maryland 14-1. Maryland heavyweight Youssif Hemida was sharp in helping the Terrapins avoid the shutout with a first-period fall over Ben Stone. That dual was live on BTN, so go ahead and check out the Badgers who earned major decisions from Andrew Crone at 157, Evan Wick at 165, Ryan Christensen at 174 and Hunter Ritter at 197 pounds. In blustery Minneapolis where the match time temperature at Si Melby Hall was 18 degrees. This one was a romp for Augsburg, which came in ranked second in Division III. The Division II Dragons made it a match early, trailing 16-9 after five bouts but the Auggies rolled in the final five weights with four bonus victories including Lucas Jeske’s 13-5 win over Weston Dobler. No. 8 Loras, which is fresh off its win over Augsburg over the weekend, rolled past No. 18 Augustana -- yup, the Illinois one, 32-9 in Rock Island. Second-ranked Jimmy Davis earned a technical fall at 149 pounds, while we had a nationally-ranked battle at 285 as top-ranked All-American Adarios Jones of Augustana knocked off sixth-ranked Quin Gilliam 2-1. These rankings from the NWCA Division III Coaches Association. Our man Andy Vogel at D3wrestle.com has more rankings over there. Eric Van Kley’s Central Dutch -- again, fitting a school named the Dutch is coached by a guy with a Dutch name -- topped the Prairie Wolves of Nebraska Wesleyan 42-3. The Prairie Wolves are a second-year program in Lincoln, Nebraska coached by Virginia native Brandon Bradley. He went to Henrico. Ty Owens coached right there. Central improved to 2-1 on the year and picked up falls from Cam Timok, Tristan Clark, Lane Rumelhart and Daniel “not Harry Potter” Radcliffe. As my wife’s family says, if you ain’t Dutch, you ain’t much. In a battle of New York teams, Don Murray’s College at Brockport Golden Eagles -- hey I wore their hat today as a matter of fact -- topped Rochester Institute of Technology, or RIT 35-12. Top-ranked 125 pounder Jonathan Haas picked up a fall in 4:05, while Dillon Stowell, Sean Peacock, and Triston Engle also recorded falls. Don Murray started coaching when Richard Millhous Nixon was President. In other action, No. 24 Waynesburg beat Muskingum 33-12, while in the NAIA we saw Lindenwood-Belleville top Missouri Baptist 27-22. Missouri Baptist would win the nightcap over first-year St. Mary of Kansas, coached by former Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney. Keeping things in the NAIA, York College of Nebraska, they’re the Panthers, not the one in Pennsylvania, topped Kansas Wesleyan 42-5. On the women’s side, Missouri Baptist’s women defeated Lindenwood-Belleville 29-12 and St. Mary 37-10. No theme tonight. Just a solemn salute to people like my late Granddaddy Otis “Plug” Abbott who served in World War II and was on the second wave of Normandy years after what today’s anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack is remembered as. December 7, 1941 was a day that according to President Franklin Roosevelt, that will live in infamy. I never had the pleasure of serving this nation, but my family did in numerous branches of the military. My father was in the Army, so were both my grandfathers. I’m not sure where my paternal grandfather was at the time, but Otis was in Europe, where he met my soon-to-be grandmother. My mother was born overseas to an American GI. God Bless America and those who serve and protect her.   JOIN THE TEAM And if you're a fan of the extensive and broad-based reach of the shows on the Mat Talk Podcast Network, become a TEAM MEMBER today.
