Non-profit owners, employees, donors, supporters—this week's episode is for you! There are a lot of assumptions and stigmas surrounding non-profits and what it's like to run them. This week's guests debunk many of those, and show what has made theirs so successful for the last seven years. Welcome to Building While Flying! This weekly podcast is brought to you by the Sasha Group. We're the small-to-medium-sized business arm of the VaynerX family of companies. We help ambitious companies build strong brands that flex with the times through strategy, branding, media, and marketing. In ever-changing times, businesses and brands have to shift and adapt. And across all sectors, there is an air of experimentation. Business owners are trying new things out in the wild;  building the plane while flying. Our pilots, Katie Hankinson and Mickey Cloud, will be talking to a diverse range of business leaders and founders. They'll explore how these guests tackle various challenges while staying resilient and committed to growth. Through these real-life examples of strategies put into practice, we hope to inspire you to experiment and develop your own strategies as we all navigate these uncertain times together.  Shawanda Mason-Moore and Jennifer Holder launched The Chattery in 2014 to fulfill a community need—and one of their own. As friends who were both new to Chattanooga, they sought a community, a place where adults could learn, grow, and connect. In 2014, they launched The Chattery, a non-profit that makes adult learning accessible, affordable, and fun. Over the last seven years, they've hosted thousands of classes led by hundreds of community members, fostered countless relationships, and created a welcoming, safe space for everyone to learn and grow. And they're just getting started! In this week's episode, Shawanda and Jennifer share The Chattery's origin story and mission, and explain how their mission drives everything they do—from the classes they offer to the grants they apply for. They also explain how they run their non-profit like a for-profit business (and why that's okay), and why you should be picky when choosing grants. They also discuss how they pivoted during the COVID-19 pandemic, and which of their pivots will be sticking around. Other in-flight topics: Starting a business as a non-profit vs. LLC Building friendships and community for adults Staying true to your mission Transitioning to online and at-home programming Opportunity costs of applying for grants Preparing for a hybrid model future Links: Website: https://www.thechattery.org/ Browse classes: https://www.thechattery.org/classes Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thechattery/?hl=en

Coble's Landing is the only Black-owned private nature preserve in the South East and second on the entire East coast. The 25 acres of land are owned by husband and wife, Rex and Shawanda Coble in Polkton, NC, the hometown of Rex and his maternal family. The Coble's who have two children have always participated in outdoor leisure such as camping, 4-weelers, and hiking; but during COVID they increased their enjoyment of the outdoors for family morale. As they spent more time outdoors, they noticed the disparities among treatment and the basic feeling of being welcome in the outdoor leisure space when it came to people of color. Rex accounts for times when he and his family were asked to leave certain parks or offered less than adequate camping spaces. After hearing similar stories from other families, the Coble's decided to create a safe space for POC who wanted to enjoy the outdoors for leisure, holistic practices, ceremonies, etc. The land currently boasts a fully mapped out ATV trail, a catch-and-release fishing pond, cleared camping spots, and hiking trails. The Coble's are expanding on the area to include fully equipped cabins, a guest center available for rental, a sustainable community garden, and a ceremony/performance area. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tyrideius-brownlow/support

You have questions. I have answers. I know a thing or sixty about real estate and today I will tell you 17 of them. More in Show 456.  Mindset Moment: I was thinking the other day about our perception of life. Dianna and I have a friend who lives in our building (a nice midtown Atlanta high rise), has a great government job with high pay, good job security and great benefits. She might be the unhappiest person we know. There is never enough money. She always expects the worst and usually gets it. In her friendships, her love life, even at her job.  How do self-fulfilling prophecies work? It’s not some mystical energy you put out there in the universe. Confirmation bias causes us to identify life examples or circumstances that support our underlying theory. We all have a big need to be able to tell ourselves, “see? I told me so.”  This will lead us to focus on the data points that support our prior beliefs. This is true if you believe that bad things are happening around you and to you OR if you believe that life is good and good things are happening.  Your beliefs will color your interpretation of events.  Do negative things happen to people with a negative outlook? Yes! “See? I told you so.” Do positive things happen to people with a negative outlook? Yes! “Yeah, well just wait - it will end badly. Things always do.” Do negative things happen to people with a positive outlook? Yes! “Life has to hand us challenges so we continue to grow and improve. We will get through this.” Do positive things happen to people with a positive outlook? Yes! “See? I told you it would work out!” Pain is a part of life, but suffering is optional. Your outlook will determine your interpretation of events, and THAT will affect your outcomes.  I want to add that the ability to adopt this positive view of life seems to be connected to hope. And hope is connected to faith. I’ve noticed in my years on earth that hope and a generally positive outlook is positively correlated with people of faith. I’m not saying that one should choose to believe simply to achieve a better outlook on life. I’m saying that believers in a hopeful afterlife are generally more positive about this one.  How to contact us www.RogerBlankenship.com. Leave a voicemail right from the home page! There’s a tendency these days to try to pigeonhole any artist that attempts to breach the boundaries. Chalk it up to the restrictions of radio playlists or the media’s attempt to strictly define musicians by the music it believes artists ought to be making, creative instincts be damned. Nevertheless Crystal Shawanda opted to defy those demands and chart her own path forward. Initially signed to RCA in 2007, she hit her stride as a country singer and songwriter when she scored a top 20 hit with her song “You Can Let Go” and subsequently tallied sales of over 50,000 copies of her debut album Dawn of a New Day and subsequently debuted in the Billboard Top 20. Nevertheless, she began to realize that the blues had captured her muse, and with that, she left the label, shifted her stance and began recording albums that reflected her love of blues and her natural affinity for that sound. As she once told an interviewer, “The whole time I was singing Patsy Cline on stage, I was singing Etta James at home.” Her new album Church House Blues reflects that dedication and devotion and finds her co-writing seven of the ten songs on the album. Produced by her husband, collaborator and cowriter Dewayne Strobel, it not only marks her fourth blues effort to date, but one of her most demonstrative as well. That’s evident at the outset, from the fiery delivery of the title track, the riveting drive of “New Orleans Is Sinking,” and the assertive strains of “Rather Be Alone,” to the quiet, contemplative desire and despair that scorches “Evil Memory,” the radio-ready hooks illuminated in “Hey Love,” and the emotive strains instilled in the bittersweet ballads “When It Comes To Love” and “Bigger Than the Blues.” At the center of it all is Crystal’s evocative vocals, a powerful, provocative force of nature that elevates each encounter and sends the album’s entries soaring towards the stratosphere. Introduction to Episode Have you had a candid conversation recently? Do you have a safe space to go when you need to have those candid conversations? Shawanda Randolph is the director and founder of DeeCilla Center in Arizona, and she’s found holding space for candid conversations is a key to healing our world. DeeCilla, a small community based nonprofit, offers a sanctuary for people who are building a new life, leaving abuse. Their transitional program teaches participants how to stand and live, giving them the necessary tools to rebuild on solid ground. Podcast Episode Summary During this global pandemic, we know that it’s difficult for people who are suffering from abuse, they don’t have the breaks from the abuse they used to, and they might not have the space to call for help. In some ways, this global pandemic is showing us where we can offer support to the people we care about. Shawanda and I discussed signs of abuse, misconceptions of what abuse is and who it affects, and different ways we can work to build a more healed world. Signs for abuse Jealousy that leads to control Types of control Support for DeeCilla Volunteer Donate - $25/month goes a LONG way! DeeCilla is creating a place of refuge for people all over the country. Arizona is actually a spot where a lot of people move to, so it proves a little easier to blend in and start over in a safe space outside of the potential norms of abusive situations. Robert & Russell meet artist Shawanda Corbett, best known for her ceramics, paintings and performances. Shawanda is a recent recipient of The Turner Bursary which replaces the Turner Prize 2020, recognised for her significant contribution to contemporary art in the UK during the past 12 months. We discuss the themes within “Neighbourhood Garden”, her current debut solo exhibition at Corvi-Mora gallery in South London, studying at the Ruskin at Oxford University, her admiration for her tutor Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, the ceramics of Magdalene Odundo and her love of jazz music including Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus, Alice Coltrane & John Coltrane. We discuss cyborg theory and growing up with a disability, the question of “what is a complete body?” and the influence of Bauhaus and Sci-Fi. We consider the importance of collaboration in creating her performances particularly with choreographers, notably her brother Albert Corbett and the role and vital energy of, and connection to, the audience. We discuss theatre and dance such as Pina Bausch and Katherine Dunham who kept dancing even when in a wheelchair later in her life. Finally we discuss family and her experiences growing up, her memories of childhood and her inspiring grandmother Mary Bells who was a big supporter and ally to the trans and gay community in New York during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.Shawanda is pursuing a doctoral degree in Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Art and Wadham College, University of Oxford. "Her practice-led DPhil focuses on the relationship between differently-abled body and abled body as cyborgs. In replacing disability theory with cyborg theory, Corbett’s practice is challenging her to be the primary maker and performer in her conceptual practice. She applies prosthetic making and the transitional period for prosthetics to techniques in filmmaking, analogue photography, and live performances."Visit her current solo exhibition at Corvi-Mora, running until 31st July 2020. https://www.corvi-mora.com/Follow @Cyborg_Artist on Instagram and official website website https://www.shawandacorbett.com. An Author, Speaker, and Philanthropist, Shawanda R. Randolph has dedicated her life to helping people live out their God-given purpose.  An Alumna of Wilmington University and Fuller Theological Seminary, Shawanda has authored such books as Fresh Manna: Journey To A New Beginning (2018), and is featured in the Best-Selling Book, 20 Beautiful Women, Vol 6 (2018) where she shares her story of overcoming adversity and learning to live "in purpose and on purpose." Her most recent book, Seeing God: Hope For A New Land (2019), explores the barriers we created and must overcome in order to live in community as God designed to create HOPE for the future generations.   Retired from the U.S. Air Force, Shawanda currently resides in Arizona, with her son, where she has established DeeCilla Comfort Center to support youth and young adult survivors of sexual and domestic violence, and human trafficking. In this episode, Shawanda and I discuss: Resisting decompartmentalizing experiences in your life so you can use the good and bad to find tools for dealing with challenges. Refusing to let other people’s perception of what you should be feeling get in the way of owning your own process and finding your strength. Embracing and leaning on empowering relationships in your life, and learning how to be vulnerable in a healthy way. How Shawanda’s organization fills in the gap to help women who don’t qualify for a shelter and other unmet needs, and how to find similar resources where you are.   Key Takeaways: What happens to you does not define you. You get to decide how to respond and who you want to be. Connect to the connections in your life. Sharing your story can begin to heal you and empower others.  There is power in being vulnerable in healthy ways.    "The greatest strength comes from being vulnerable and realizing that you can't do it all on your own. Shawanda will discuss  the DeeCilla Comfort Center. This is the nonprofit she started to help survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and human trafficking.  She plans to open a center later this year, while they are still also focused on their outreach endeavors.  While most outreaches focus on awareness and what to do when something happens, their strategy is to help the community understand that “When One Hurts, We All Hurt.”  She believes that often this is something we seem to overlook…how these issues impact not just one life but all within the community.  Some people think they are so far removed from someone's situation that if they ignore it, it will go away or they can pretend it does not exist. So, her events focus on bringing the community together through collaborative programs, to heal our community from within.

MEET SHAWANDA RANDOLPH Shawanda Randolph retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service. God would use her keen sense of wisdom, insight, and innate leadership skills, to help guide, direct, and influence those around her, especially those in leadership and potential leadership positions. It was her discipline, worth ethic, and problem-solving skills that led both superiors and fellow associates to depend on her counsel. As, a result, many flourished under her advisement and mentorship. Even then, she understood that it was God who gave her the courage and desire to watch others walk their God-given paths in and outside of the military. Once Shawanda received this revelation, she understood what would be an essential concept to her ministry: Identity. She knew that once people discovered who they were in God, they would be more effective leaders. She learned that people often separated their professional, personal and spiritual lives. However, as God used her life as a model, He showed her that the three were inter-connected. He used everything he called her to be to propel her into the ministry full-time. Shawanda holds an MBA in Health Care Administration from Wilmington University and a Master’s in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. She also holds A.A.S degrees in Healthcare Administration and Human Resources. She is the proud mother of one very special son. At “Fresh Manna” she offers prayers, wisdom, and prophetic instruction on some of the most pressing issues in society today. Fresh Manna’s mission is to not only to nourish the soul of the lost, and replenish those who have accepted Jesus into their hearts but build the next generation of God’s leaders. She has published Fresh Manna: Journey To A New Beginning. Fresh Manna is a devotional that is comprised of practical life lessons and questions that will challenge your way of thinking, encouraging you to begin to view yourself and the world through the eyes of The Creator. It currently available on shawandarandolph.com, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million and other online retailers. Shawanda is most recently featured in the Amazon Best-seller, 20 Beautiful Women, Volume 6, where she shares her story of overcoming and defying the odds of victimization with the principle that “a woman should never be defined by what she has been through. Instead, the challenges we overcome, make us stronger and our stories are meant to encourage and empower others, giving them fuel for the future.” Shawanda resides in Arizona with her son and has started a nonprofit, DeeCilla Comfort Center, with plans to open a center for those victimized by human trafficking, domestic violence, and sexual assault.
