Our guest this week is Luke Smith, a British record producer and musician who emerged in the early mid 00s with his innovative and critically acclaimed band Clor. Having split up after their first album he immediately embarked on a production career and found early success with his work on Foals sophomore album Total Life Forever. As well as cracking the top ten it received a mercury award nomination and elevated the band to a new stratosphere in the British alternative and rock scene. Work with Slow Club, Crystal Fighters and Keaton Henson followed for Luke, as well as a session or two with host Lawrence Diamond. He now works out of his space in East London, but it was in Bob's space in East London, Hackney Studios, where we sat down to discuss his path into production, that Foals record, and his reverence for the gear and spaces that make recording and production music such a special and beautiful job The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Hackney, East London. Before Self Esteem was selling out venues as a solo artist, she was Rebecca Taylor of Slow Club, a band who helped bring British twee to its apex in the 2010s. We talk about glockenspiels made out of Shloer, making cakes for the audience, the backlash against twee, the obsession with babytalk and the way bad men could use tweeness to hide in plain sight. I'm so excited about today's guest. Self Esteem has been providing me with my preferred soundtrack for life, the universe and just about everything since the release of her BRILLIANT second album, Prioritise Pleasure, last year. I'm not the only one who's obsessed - it was the Guardian's album of the year and earned her a Brit Award nomination. If you haven't yet listened to her soaringly beautiful anthem, I Do This All The Time, then do that right after you've heard this. Promise? Ok, then.Rebecca Lucy Taylor, was born and raised in Rotherham, before becoming one half of indie folk duo Slow Club. When the band broke up, Taylor reinvented herself as a solo artist. Her name? Self Esteem. She joins me to talk about her failure to get into drama school, her failure to 'make it' in music, and her failure at 'happy ever after' in relationships. We also discuss body image, toxic partners and what success really means. It's a goodie. Enjoy.---How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted by Elizabeth Day, produced by Naomi Mantin and Chris Sharp. Mad Professor, Suzanne Ciani, Matthew E. White and Georgia Anne Muldrow discuss how listening to music lets you travel through time, packaging their work into album form, and which part of the music-making process they enjoy the most. Matthew E. White is a singer, songwriter, producer, and arranger from Richmond, Virginia. He blends folk, gospel, AOR, rock, disco, and psychedelic sounds. He's also worked with the likes of Sharon Van Etten, Bedouine, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, and Slow Club. Suzanne Ciani is a Grammy-nominated composer, musician, and sound designer. In the 1970s, she invented the world famous ‘pop and pour' sound effect for Coca Cola. In 1980, she was the first woman hired to score a major Hollywood feature when she composed the music for The Incredible Shrinking Woman. She's also a recipient of the Moog Innovation Award for her work with synthesizers, and is a former host of this very show. Georgia Anne Muldrow is an influential part of Los Angeles' hip-hop, jazz, and soul scenes. She's released more than 20 albums, and has appeared on tracks with Erykah Badu, Blood Orange, and Robert Glasper. Mos Def is a fan, saying “she's something else… like Roberta Flack, Nina Simone, and Ella Fitzgerald”. Mad Professor is a legendary dub reggae producer and engineer. Born in Guyana, he was nicknamed Mad Professor due to his fascination with electronics, and when he moved to London he collected mixing and recording equipment to make his first studio in his living room. Since then he's released hundreds of recordings and worked with artists including Lee “Scratch” Perry, Sly & Robbie, Grace Jones, Massive Attack, and Sade, before setting up the largest Black-owned studio complex in the UK.

Rebecca Lucy Taylor was one half of Sheffield indie folk band Slow Club with Charles Watson and the pair built a dedicated following over the course of their five albums. For this episode, we spoke to Charles Watson, member of Sheffield band Slow Club. Charles’ debut solo album “Now That I Am A River” was released in 2018 leading UK independent label, Moshi Moshi. The album was released to critical acclaim and was named one of the albums of the year by BBC Radio 6 Music presenter, Lauren Laverne. Slow Club were a successful indie band, spanning a period of almost 10 years. They released four albums from “Yeah So” in 2009 through to “One Day All Of This Won’t Matter Anymore” in 2016. An award winning documentary of their last tour “Our Most Brilliant Friends”, was released in 2019 We talked to Charles about writing music for film, demoing his next album, and of course the song he wish he wrote, a song by Bob Dylan. Enjoy listening! Here is a playlist of some of the songs featured, or mentioned in the episode.

We're getting BEEFY this Christmas with a longer episode and a bigger cast list. Internet hearthrob??? Richie from Saucewise joins us for the first time since the last time a different 6 months after he last put out an episode of his podcast to talk about what we think our Christmas Specials would be like. David calls his grandma, Matt is naturally depressed, Kyle desperately wants out of this conversation, and Richie plugs us like a book deal. My guest in this episode is Charles Watson. He was once one half of Slow Club with Rebecca Taylor, the duo they formed in 2006 when they were in school. Five excellent albums later, they went their separate ways, and Charles is now a member of The Surfing Magazines, a garage rock four-piece he formed with members of The Wave Pictures, and a solo artist with a brilliant debut to his name. Listen to Now That I'm A River, released on Moshi Moshi, in 2018. I've long admired his unshowy but hugely effective guitar-playing, so I was keen to talk to him for an episode. He likes talking about guitars as much as I do, so it's no surprise we got quite nerdy quite quickly. He talked me through his collection of guitars and some others that have come and gone over the years, plus gave an update on where he's up to with album No 2 and the score he's been working on for Mae Martin's new Netflix series. For more information on Charles, go to his Bandcamp page here and if you want to see the video for Now That I'm A River we were talking about, the link is here. Adrenalin, stress and composure is in the job description for a trauma surgeon. But how do doctors cope with routinely operating on patients with devastating injuries? Does it ever get easy to deliver difficult news?In this intimate conversation, Olly meets Dr. Allan Philp, chief trauma surgeon of Allegheny Health Network, Pennsylvania, and Mr Shehan Hettiaratchy, trauma lead surgeon for Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, to discuss alleviating anxiety, performing amputations - and how both men’s military background in Afghanistan has informed their work with civilian casualties.Elsewhere, in this month’s Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart investigates the trend for escape rooms - by designing and building his own, complete with terrifying deployment of ancient technology. Luckily, he’s roped in the services of escape room champion Sarah Dodd. Just watch out for those party poppers...Meanwhile, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox advises a couple with wildly different libidos on how to get their sex schedule back on track. Along the way, she considers couple’s counselling, dirty diaries, and ‘bossy massage’.Finally, our record of the month is ‘In Time’ by Self Esteem, solo project of former Slow Club singer Rebecca Taylor. Cameron Ralston is the house bassist and a producer for Spacebomb, a collective of musicians based in Richmond, Virginia, who set up a record label and production company based around a house band. They followed a model established by the likes of Stax or Motown, with a signature style inspired by a love of great American soul music. As The Guardian put it, "they make albums that sound like a million dollars" - and this and this October they assemble in London for a one off show that will include guest collaborations with the likes of Natalie Prass, Slow Club, The Waterboys' Mike Scott, Foxygen and Charlie Fink from Noah and the Whale. Ahead of that show we met Spacebomb bassist Cameron Ralston to talk about something he likes to do when he's not in the studio or on the road: gardening. We cover two Christmas duets with two different takes on love. An anonymous request introduces us to "Christmas TV" by Slow Club, a guileless song full of yearning and affirmation - we pair it with "Are You Coming Over for Christmas?" by Belle & Sebastian, which might be the audio equivalent of "Baby It's Cold Outside" cosplay.

When I arrive backstage at Le Poisson Rouge green room, Charles Watson is digging into a pre-set dinner, with Rebecca Taylor seated in the back on the phone with another interview. He’s asking her about Brexit — seeking advice, really, a mere day or so after our own shattering electoral upset. The duo flew in on election day, the whole thing feels like an unwelcome bit of deja vu — but they’re happy to help us through it nonetheless.Taylor, for one, has never shied away from the intimate in her own work, even as Watson’s contributions to Slow Club tend toward the fantastic.Their opposite approaches to music and life have ultimately proved one of the group’s greatest strengths, with two strong and divergent approaches coupling nicely on record, including last year’s fittingly bluntly titled, One Day All of This Won't Matter Anymore, that finds their sound stretching out and mellowing slightly (in tone, if not content) from the pop sensibilities that have defined previous efforts. Their distinct but complimentary personalities are on full display during a deep but light hearted backstage conversation that finds Taylor experiencing the wonders of American cold medicine for the first time.

Today's band, the English guy-girl duo Slow Club, dips from modern Indie-Pop back to 60s/70s-era Motown for their new release, Complete Surrender. First we take a trip through the album, and then, as per the present case of genre-meshing, we take another trip a through a thesis: "Pop music looks toward the future while Indie looks to the past." Any validity? That's today's question. (Opinions & comments encouraged.) Continue reading

Sole, finalmente. Spogliatevi. Lato A: 1) Tiger! Shit! Tiger! Tiger! “The Architects of Despair” 2) Slow Club “Me & You” 3) Noah & The Whale “Five Years Time” 4) Rio Mezzanino “Hand Searching” 5) The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart “Kurt Cobain’s Cardigan” Lato B: 1) Peter Kernel “Shoot Back” 2) Ladyhawke “Paris Is Burning” 3) Portishead “Machine Gun” 4) Emily Plays “Me, You & Jessica Lange” 5) Foals “Balloons” [ogni mercoledi, dalle 17 alle 18, su Radio Tandem (Bolzano, 98.400 MHz), ogni domenica a colazione, in podcasting.] http://nomoreclouds.blogspot.com
