Choses à Savoir SANTE
Le soutien-gorge favorise-t-il le cancer du sein ?

Choses à Savoir SANTE

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 16, 2025 2:02

Tight clothing causes a significant negative effect on your body. And the danger is you don't even notice it. After groundbreaking research on the connection between bras and breast cancer since the 90's, Sydney Ross Singer joins us for today's episode to discuss how you can develop a better mindset around bras, clothing, culture, and a healthier lifestyle as a whole.  Meet our guest As a lecturer and author, Sydney Singer's humor, wit, and clear writing styles have made him a highly sought-after speaker and interview guest. After receiving graduate training in biochemistry and being awarded his master's degree in anthropology in 1981 from Duke University, Sydney Ross Singer decided to pursue a career in the new and emerging field of medical anthropology. To better understand how culture and environment affect human health, he then went on to complete three years of medical school at the University of Texas to become one of the first medically trained anthropologists in the United States. In 1994, he founded and currently serves as Co-Director of the Institute for the Study of Culturogenic Disease with his wife and co-research Soma Grismaijer. This pioneering organization is dedicated to discovering the culture-based causes of disease. Using an integrated approach from the fields of biochemistry, anthropology, medical humanities, and medicine, Sydney Singer has made numerous medical discoveries into the cultural causes of various common diseases. According to Wikipedia, “The history of bras (or brassières) is closely tied to the social status of women, the evolution of fashion, and shifting views of the female body over time.   Throughout history, women have used various garments to support, cover, restrain, reveal or modify the appearance of their breasts.  Artifacts dating back to the 14th century BCE, depict women wearing bikini-like garments.  By the 14th century CE, the proto-bra was in development in Europe. From approximately the 16th century CE onward, the corset dominated the undergarments of wealthier women in the Western world. By the early 20th century, garments more closely resembling contemporary bras had emerged, though large-scale commercial production only occurred in the 1930s.   By the time the war ended, most fashion-conscious women in Europe and North America were wearing bras.  From there, the bra was adopted by women in other parts of the world, including Asia, Africa, and Latin America.” (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_bras) Sydney Ross Singer is a pioneer of applied medical anthropology, and the co-author of the internationally acclaimed book, Dressed to Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras.  Using his training in medicine and anthropology, Sydney searches for the cultural causes of disease, empowering people to stop harming themselves by adopting healthier ways of living.  Sydney is the founder of the Institute for the Study of Culturogenic Disease, and is the Director of the Good Shepherd Foundation. Are you a fan of the TV series, The Game of Thrones? I sure am! If you are you might recall the character referred to as the "Red Woman," who is also known in ancient lore as Sekhmet. Feared by many for her magickal abilities and intellectual wiles, Sekhmet says: "I am pure strength. I honor my anger by giving voice to it." Today's episode is the third of our special Fast Friday series on divine feminine archetype, goddesses, priestesses, saints, mystics and all-around epic females where we focus on the Red Woman/Sekmet, and the divine Greek-Roman Huntress and Goddess of the Wilderness, Diana - also known as Artemis, or you might know as Wonder Woman! As I've mentioned in several previous episodes, I personally resonate highly with Diana/Artemis for reasons I get into! One of my favorite quotes attributed to her is: "The language of the natural world is the frequency of love - this is my mother tongue." - Diana, Goddess of the Hunt, Wilderness and Moon Like the powerhouse female icons discussed in Episode 163 and Episode 166, Sekhmet and Diana are two earthshaking embodiments of the Divine Feminine that all women need to be aware of because doing so can help tap into their abilities and essence within OURSELVES. Today's two featured forms represent The Feminine in powerful, dynamic yet unique ways that are often not depicted in mainstream narratives. Remember: the Divine Feminine energy within us all is a force that can be as powerful as a tsunami or as soft as a lullaby. I believe the trick to embodying Her energy is to have the discretion to know WHEN the right time is for tapping into a selected aspect of her many faces and when to express more of the Divine Masculine in you - not an easy task I know! But don't worry, I'm here to help and that's what this show is all about! :) This is Part III of a multi-part series on figures who represent divine femininity featuring the Divine Feminine Oracle Cards by Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author, Master of Divinity and profound feminist theologian, Meggan Watterson.  Each of the figures we discuss in this series represents something in YOU. We are a blend of the diving and the human, the animal and the spiritual. Are you a fan of the TV series Game of Thrones? I sure am! If you are you might recall the character referred to as the "Red Woman," who is also known in ancient lore as Sekhmet. Feared by many for her magical abilities and intellectual wiles, Sekhmet says: "I am pure strength. If at any point you find that one of these figures resonate with you, it may be reverberating with hidden aspect of you that longs to be expressed.  If you love this content, in addition to episodes 163 and 166, I highly encourage you to check out the following conversations on Awakening Aphrodite: 32. What if I told you that you could significantly decrease your risk of disease, simply by the clothes that you choose to wear? I'm confident that today's episode is literally going to save lives. Today I interview Applied medical anthropologist, Sydney Ross Singer, who is going to blow your beautiful mind. Sydney studies how culture, society + lifestyle contributes to chronic disease. In this case, specifically breast cancer. This topic is very close to my heart (no pun intended) because when I was 14 my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her story is a primary reason why I choose to teach people about disease prevention every day. I take this topic very very seriously. That is…Boobs. With the stress, rush and caffeine of the modern American lifestyle, it's no wonder thyroid disorders are rising along with skyrocketing levels of hormonal imbalances and adrenal fatigue. Are there alternative ways to heal thyroid dysfunctions without resorting to the life-altering pharmacological techniques touted by conventional medicine? Sydney Ross Singer, my guest in this episode, has some promising new information that indicates a link between vocal expression and thyroid health. This association between sound and thyroid disorders was long understood by Ayurvedic medicine, and Sydney is working hard to bring these relevant findings back to light. Sydney Ross Singer was my popular guest on Episode 119, a critically important conversation on how bra-wearing obstructs lymphatic flow to elevate womens' risk of developing breast cancer. That episode could maybe even save your life, so please check that out and share it with the women in your life! After receiving graduate training in biochemistry and being awarded his master's degree in anthropology from Duke University, Sydney Ross Singer decided to pursue a career in the new and emerging field of medical anthropology. To better understand how culture and environment affects human health, he went on to complete three years of medical school at the University of Texas to become one of the first medically trained anthropologists in the United States. In this episode we have a thought-provoking discussion about the thyroid and it's energetic and esoteric connection to the 5th chakra of the body, which is the area of the neck, upper back and chest area. We discuss the more mechanical, physical components of this area of the body as well as it's more symbolic and metaphorical association with our personal will and the way we communicate and express ourselves, in particular, our speaking and our listening. In addition, Sydney teaches us about the standard pharmacological "treatment" for thyroid disorders while also introducing some effective, practical and easy (!) lifestyle behaviors and mindsets that we can possibly engage in which might help us avoid invasive radiation-based treatments, chemicals and pharmaceuticals by rebalancing the thyroid and hormones safely and holistically. That is your body communicating with you! We put up with minor discomforts all day long to be "socially acceptable," and yet the source of this particular minor discomfort (the bra!) may be causing us undue harm in the long term. Sydney Ross Singer, my guest today, has been researching the link between bras and breast cancer for decades, and according to him, bras should come with a warning label like cigarettes do. Wow! Get ready for some mind blowing statistics, an insider's scoop into the business side of our medical system and the physiological rationale behind the international free-the-nipple movement. Sydney Ross Singer – Fascinating Tips For Dramatically Improving Your Sleep Part 2

[include file=get-in-itunes.html] Today we had Sydney Ross Singer on the show to talk about how to improve your sleep based on his book called, Get It Up! (pictured below). This was the 2nd installment of our 2 part series with Sydney Ross Singer about how to improve your sleep. If you want to listen to part 1 of our series with Syd Singer about sleep you can click here. We had an amazingly fun conversation with Syd Singer about an experiement Kate and I are doing with our bed. Syd recommends elevating the head of your bed 6 inches or so, in order to decrease blood pressure in your head. It also affects your thyroid gland (which plays a huge role in our hormone levels) and carotid arteries and brain function. Interestingly enough it also affects you eye health in relation to glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and more. So raising the foot of your bed is important according to Syd to dramatically improve your health. It's simple enough and takes no extra effort (my kind of thing!) once you spend 10 minutes elevating your bed. I haven't looked at the science myself or any studies I'm just going on intuition and trust here because I think Syd is onto something with this one. Aside from the mechanical and positioning of how we sleep which we covered more in part 1, we also discussed commonly covered topics like how much sleep should you get (his answer might surprise you), and how important it is to get to sleep before midnight. Now that's an interesting subject because I tend to stay up late. I do combat staying up late though by turning off all lights and using candles along with dramatically reducing my exposure to blue light using a computer program called Flux and some blue light sunglasses. This has helped my sleep a lot. If you're interested in the sociological impacts of how blue light is affecting us, listen to the show we did with neurosurgeon Dr. Jack Kruse and you can even look at some webinars Dr. Kruse has put together by clicking here. We also covered topics like Polyphasic Sleep and if that's something viable to look into. A lot of "Bio-Hackers" are doing that these days but I don't think it's sustainable (or healthy for that matter) long term. Although the idea that we could (and/or should) take smaller cat naps throughout the day is very interesting to me and I'm sure is very natural. I just don't think cat naps should take the place of a deep restful REM induced sleep where maximum healing and recovery takes place. We also discussed if it's normal to wake up in the middle of the night and how long it should actually take us to fall asleep. Over 40% of the population these days are having trouble sleeping. I think not sleeping sound enough and deep enough contributes to our stress levels, lowers hormones, inhibits cellular repair and renewal. It's CRITICAL to get the best sleep possible each and every night if you want to live a long and healthy life. So I hope you enjoy this most recent episode with Sydney Ross Singer about sleep. It was an honor to interview him on our show and hope you will share this with your friends if you found it valuable. Thanks guys! [include file=get-in-itunes.html] Today we had Sydney Ross Singer on the show to talk about how to improve your sleep based on his book called, Get It Up! (pictured below). If you're not familiar with Sydney he talks about how our lifestyles are affecting our health as well as our genetic structure and expression in human physiology. He's a medical anthropologist and has done mountains of research into the simple mundane practices we do each day that affect our health. It is always really great speaking to somebody like Syd because he reminds us to step back, waaaay back from how we're living out lives and really examine if the things we do each day are helping us or hurting us. For example in this interview we talked a lot about practical ideas for improving our sleep. Did you know that by raising the head of your bed by 15 degrees (about 6 inches) can reduce eye pressure, oxygenate the brain, reduce inflammation, increase circulation and improve your health in a number of different ways? Simple right? But who knew? It's things we do (specifically with our anataomy) like sitting for long periods of time or even other things like wear constrictive clothing that over time can dramatically decrease our health. Is sleeping on a flat bed one night or sleeping with no pillows going to kill us? Well no... But... Over a life time these practices can radically impact our health at a dramatic level. The really great news is that the unhealthy practices that we do each day without even knowing it, can be changed relatively easily and then they can have the exact same impact on our health, but on a beneficial level. When we correct our lifestyle mistakes that are harming us, then we can make those same practices work for the benefit of our health and life without really doing much on a day to day basis. How much extra work does it take to sleep on a bed with the head raised by 6 inches? Not much. But if you fix that and other lifestyle habits like that, we can (over time) GREATLY improve our health, prevent disease, increase energy and live longer. It's really quite amazing how simple and easy it is to correct these mistakes. At the very end of the show we decided to have Syd back because there were so many other sleep issues that we needed to talk about but didn't have time to cover. So we wanted to have him back on and ask him lots of other questions regarding how to improve our sleep. Then we decided to try this experiment on ourselves. Kate and I are going to raise our bed by 6 inches at the head of our bed. We're simply going to cut 2 wood blocks that are 6 inches thick and put them under the 2 corners at the head of our bed and then report back to see how this experiments affects our health. We really enjoyed Syd Singer and we hope you did also. [include file=get-in-itunes.html] Sidney Ross Singer joined us today to talk about lots of rather interesting topics. The main theme of today's show was how bras can cause breast cancer and how dangerous they are. Sound crazy? If it sounds crazy to you, you might want to step back and do some deep thinking about whether or not you've been programmed by the mass media in your life. The media (especially movies and companies like Victoria's Secret) all portray bras and tight clothing as being very sexually appealing. We've all been conditioned by them our entire lives. It kind of goes with the territory of living in the modern Western world. But Syd makes compelling arguments that bras and tightly fitted clothing are not only dangerous but actually deadly. You see the lymphatic fluid (there's more lymphatic fluid in our bodies than blood actually which makes you understand just how important it is) gets stuck and constricted because of poor circulation caused by the straps and metal under wire of these bras. Over long periods of time for many many years this prevents the body from being able to cleanse and detoxify all of the toxins, chemicals and poisons that the lymph fluid accumulates. And as a result, breast cancer is one of the more popular cancers among women with lung cancer coming in at a close second. If you think about our culture just about everything we're doing is completely unnatural. Women were't meant to wear tight bras that squish and change the shape of their boobs. It's just not natural Because we know that metal is a conductor of electricity and we're bombarded with EMF radiation, I'm convinced that this metal under wire is attracting these electro magnetic fields to the body making them even more unhealthy. I realize it sounds crazy and it might sound like such a hippy idea but the more you think about it, the more you're going to realize this entire way that we are living in our modern world is killing us little by little, day by day. Do I think bras and the whole Victoria Secret thing is sexy? Sure I do. But at the same time I recognize that I only think that way because of years and years of conditioning by mass media. It takes time to cleanse your mind, emotions and psyche of that garbage akin to McDonalds hamburgers and shakes. So in the mean time if we believe that is a link between bras and breast cancer what can we do? As women you can begin by increasing the time each day that you go bra-less if you will. If you think about it, it took years and even "training bras" to get your body and mind into the idea of wearing these things. So it might take a few years to be comfortable with not wearing them so much. So just be okay with that. It's the small changes every day that count. Small changes can make a huge impact in your life given enough time. Please pass this show on to any women you might know that might be interested in the link between bras and breast cancer! After you listen, comment below and tell us what you think! We discuss the following and so much more: Why early detection of breast lumps or tumors is unhealthy How to know if your bras is too tight The dangers of mammograms The dangers of belts, corsetts, neck ties and sports bras Syd's thoughts about Angelina Jolie and her double mastectomy and ovary removal Tips for improving thyroid health How to improve your sleep positions for better health & circulation The dangers of dyes in these bras And so much more! I bet you never thought bras could cause breast cancer did you? What's your bra doing to your breasts?Cultural factors can influence how our bodies work. Some lifestyle habits lead to illness. Bras hold the "girls" up and smooth out the silhouette of clothing. However, changing the shape of the breast means constriction. This constriction inhibits proper development of the lymphatic system, which is responsible for circulating out toxins and dead cells. You don’t need a bra. Take a month off and see how your body feels. If you feel uncomfortable letting your breasts be free, you might opt for a tank top or sports bra. Listen as Dr. Sydney Ross Singer joins Dr. Pamela Peeke to discuss what bras can do to the breasts and your overall health. Sponsor: Smarty Pants Vitamins

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 104, originally published in August 2012. What is making us sick? We know our lifestyle is the problem, but on this episode of Holistic Survival, we will learn how some common lifestyle choices and cultural beliefs may be a factor in many of our issues, such as migraines, obesity, and breast cancer. Jason Hartman interviews medical anthropologist and author, Sydney Ross Singer, to shed some light on these problematic factors. Sydney begins with his newest research on sleep. “People in our culture sleep too flat,” he states, explaining the impact it has on circulation to the brain and body. All sorts of conditions can result, such as migraines, sleep apnea, compression of nerves that can cause carpel tunnel, compression of organs, change in bone structure, and many other traumas to the body that one wouldn't even consider. These conditions as a result of how we sleep are confirmed by NASA studies of the effect of gravity on fluid pressure in the brain and other parts of the body. Sydney also talks about compression injuries from tight clothing, including a link between tight braziers and breast cancer. Tight clothing and shoes restrict circulation, causing a back up of fluids in our tissues. Toxins in clothing and pesticides, and the common tonsillectomy are associated with weight gain. Stress levels affect overall health. Sydney encourages people to take responsibility for their own health by eliminating different lifestyle choices and give the body a chance to heal. He recommends people experiment with Self Studies to see what may be causing problems, such as wearing loose clothing for a month, raising the head and feet instead of sleeping flat for a week, going a month without a bra. Many diseases and conditions, especially chronic conditions, may be prevented and cured by a simple alteration in lifestyle. Website: Sydney at Academia

This week’s show is all about bras! Or rather, the lack thereof. Amy is joined by Humarian’s Community Manager, Christina Conlon, to talk to Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer about their book, "Dressed to Kill: The Link between Breast Cancer and Bras”. Syd and Soma work in the field of “applied medical anthropology” with a focus on how culture and lifestyle can make us sick. Soma begins by sharing her story of finding a lump in her breast and how a prior experience in Fiji led to the idea that constriction from bras could be a potential cause of breast problems. Syd shares new research regarding lymph stasis and how the constriction of bras can exacerbate this issue. They discuss some of the research indicating that women get breast cancer 100 times more than men, but bra-free women have about the same breast cancer rate as men. Soma shares her own experience with transitioning away from wearing a bra and tips for other women to do the same. Syd and Soma also dish about bra companies that have contacted them to consult on newer, less constrictive bra designs based on “Dressed to Kill” and the rise in prominence of less constrictive bras, like wire-free and sports bras. You can find “Dressed to Kill” on amazon.com and wherever books are sold, and you can find more about Syd and Soma’s research at brasandbreastcancer.org.

'Dressed To Kill', bras & breast cancer, culturogenic disease Sydney Ross Singer is a medical anthropologist and the co-author (with his wife Soma) of several groundbreaking and controversial health books, and the co-director of the Institute for the Study of Culturogenic Disease. Sydney was trained in biochemistry, anthropology and medicine.  He is internationally recognized for his revolutionary and shocking research linking breast cancer with the wearing of tight bras, as described in the book, Dressed To Kill. He and Soma currently live in Hawaii, on a rainforest preserve, where they grow their own food, produce their own energy and perform lifestyle research on various culture caused diseases. This podcast interview is definitely one to keep an open mind about before listening!  It’s good to hear all sides of a story before discarding anything as ridiculous - usually my philosophy on things.  So having said that, this really is an interesting concept.  One that leaves people having very strong feelings about! During this interview we discuss the research & findings of Syd’s bra and breast cancer research which was the input to his booked “Dressed To Kill”.  Published over 20 years ago, and quite controversial (not just then but even now), finally there is more & more research supporting Syd’s claim that tight bras can cause cancer. I personally have reduced my bra-wearing time – even prior to hearing about Syd & his research & was fascinated by what happened to me.  Which then, after reading his book & talking to him, all makes sense & fits perfectly. Syd is really knowledgeable and very interesting to talk to, so I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed talking to him If you want to find out more about his research beyond this interview, then make sure you read his book, “Dressed To Kill".  This book is not written in a super scientific way, so it’s easy to read & understand…and at the same time, it’s really interesting, as it talks about Soma’s journey with cancer. Enjoy!  and remember...you CAN have it all mt xxx Hack your life to health, happiness & abundance #superhumanyou
