John is joined by the Oscar and Emmy Award-winning documentarian Davis Guggenheim to discuss his new film for Apple TV +, “Deaf President Now!” Davis lays out the story behind the movie, which revolves around a student protest that erupted over eight days in 1988 at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, the world's only university for the deaf, and explains why it stands as “the greatest civil rights movement in history you've never heard of.” Davis also retraces his storied career as a non-fiction director, connecting the dots between his past films, from “An Inconvenient Truth” and “Waiting for ‘Superman'” to “He Named Me Malala" and "Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie”—and reveals why getting fired by Denzel Washington from “Training Day” changed his life, and for the better. I'm a huge fan of Gerard Butler tilting towards being a B movie action titan in mold of Liam Neeson or Jason Statham and loved the grimy, flawed Heat via Training Day via Bad Lieutenant charms of the original. Happily this seems to now have morphed into a franchise, though shifting in tone to a near buddy comedy, it still does enough.
Almost a quarter century after the Denzel Washington classic hit the big screen, Luke & Corrye explore what made this banger such a riot of an L.A. film! From overacting from Dr. Dre to a dynamite Ethan Hawke performance to that intense as hell card game with the Mexican gang, Training Day delivers with a lot to like! PLUS: Corrye delivers his Oscar's picks AND his Top 10 films of 2024.
This week's pick was made supporter Dylan, who's previous picks have ranged from the gritty realism of Training Day to the surreal comedy The Big Lebowski. And this pick is going back to 1978 on on the serious side of the scale with, The Deer Hunter. The Deer Hunter was an ambitious and challenging endeavor, driven by director Michael Cimino's meticulous vision. Initially conceived as a smaller war film, the project expanded dramatically as Cimino rewrote the script, emphasizing the emotional and psychological toll of war. The film's harrowing Russian roulette sequences, which became its most infamous hallmark, were not based on historical accounts but rather intended as a metaphor for the randomness and brutality of war. The production faced difficulties from the start, with Cimino's insistence on authenticity leading to grueling shoots in both the U.S. and Thailand, where the Vietnam War sequences were filmed. The cast, led by Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and John Savage, underwent intense training to embody their roles convincingly, even immersing themselves in the culture of steelworkers in Pennsylvania before filming. The film's Thailand shoot was particularly grueling, with cast and crew working under extreme conditions to capture the harrowing war sequences. Controversy also surrounded the film's depiction of the Vietnam War, with critics arguing that its portrayal of the Viet Cong was one-sided and sensationalized. Additionally, Cimino's perfectionism led to a chaotic production schedule, frequently going over budget and over time. However, despite these challenges, The Deer Hunter became a landmark film, earning widespread critical acclaim and winning five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Cimino. The film's haunting themes, striking cinematography, and raw performances solidified its place as one of the greatest war films ever made, though its troubled production foreshadowed the excesses that would later plague Cimino's career. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where friendship is forged in steel and tested by war… three men embark on a journey that will change them forever. In this podcast we are tying into our February theme surrounding the early cinema of one Antoine Fuqua and we are discussing his most highly acclaimed feature Training Day. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about how Denzel Washington may have helped Fuqua make this movie, how David Ayer's script is brimming with authenticity and how some people find this brand of writing provocative and whether this movie has two leads or just one. We also talk about seemingly real ramifications of holding a gun sideways, whether Alonso was an undercover cop at all and just how anxiety-inducing it must be to play a hand of poker with a bunch of gangbangers. In this episode, Jon is joined by FORMER Knicks beat writer & FORMER friend of the pod Fred Katz of The Athletic to discuss the Knicks season leading up to the Allstar break, both asking an over-arching question, making a post ASB prediction & giving one hot take. (PRODUCER'S NOTE: That episode description sounds great, right? Well, I'm only 25% sure that's what actually happened, since this episode featured so much more Macri/Katz chaos & nonsense than you've ever seen/listened to. I don't even think timestamps are even necessary, let alone possible. What I can promise is that something very funny & unbelievable happened to Macri just before we started recording & it's teased throughout the episode before FINALLY revealed. Hope you enjoy - both the show & the break!) Watch the video version of this podcast on our YouTube channel!
