This show's main purpose is to showcase our local waterways and shine a spotlight on the incredibly skilled anglers in our area who often go unnoticed on the national stage. On this episode, I have a conversation with Tyler Trent. Tyler is a formidable competitor known for his success on Kerr Reservoir. Fishing against him on that lake is akin to facing the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in January. Tyler's achievements are truly remarkable, having earned over $133,128 from MLF/FLW alone, and he has also triumphed in other prestigious tournament trails, including winning this year's CATT Championship. More than 110 researchers across Purdue University share ideas, insights and findings to drive cancer research, with a shared goal of creating a world without cancer. Listen as we talk to The Challenge's 2023 guests of honor, Tony and Kelly Trent, parents of the late Tyler Trent, a 20-year-old Purdue student from Carmel, Indiana, who passed away from a rare form of bone cancer in 2019. Tony and Kelly share more about what the word “persistence” means to their family – and what it meant to Tyler – and why the research the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research conducts is so important in providing hope to cancer patients and survivors.

Tyler Trent was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in 2014 after what was thought to be only a broken arm after throwing a frisbee. His parents Kelly and Tony will talk about Tyler's incredible journey which eventually became known throughout the country due to his connection to the Purdue University Football team.Attending Purdue while a freshman , Tyler and a friend decided to camp out the night before at the football stadium before their game with Michigan. What was most unusual about this was that Tyler had just completed a chemotherapy treatment 6 hours before. When head football coach Jeff Brohm got word about what Tyler did, he visited him the next morning. That began the amazing connection that Tyler developed with the entire Purdue team, especially with starting quarterback David Blough. In 2018, as Tyler's condition worsened and he was unable to return to school, he still made his presence felt by predicting that his beloved Boilermakers would upset undefeated Ohio State in a Nationally Televised game. Purdue destroyed the Buckeyes 49-20 . Tyler attended the game despite being very sick the week leading up to kickoff, and he was really the star of the night.Sadly, Tyler passed away less than 3 moths later. His legacy however, will continue for many years to come.

There are some interviews that make you step back and take a deep breath. That’s how I felt before picking up the phone to speak with Kelly Trent, the mother of Tyler Trent — a young man many became familiar with in 2018 when his battle with cancer went public. It wasn’t his plan to make it so, but his invigorating spirit and zest for life couldn’t be contained. Tyler became known as a Purdue superfan, as he decked out for Purdue football games even as he was extremely sick with Osteosarcoma. The team took notice of him — but it wasn’t just the fandom. Tyler’s faith was a tangible part of his life, establishing his hope in something greater than this world. When he received a second diagnosis of cancer after being in remission for two years, he decided this time around would be worth something. It was then he began a journey towards raising millions for cancer research, offering hope for others battling this awful disease and finding strength and resilience in the people around him, God and the things he loved most in life. To say it was a privilege to speak with the incredible woman who raised Tyler would be an understatement. Kelly took the time to share her heart with me, walk listeners through Tyler’s cancer journey and talk to us about what it means even though he ultimately lost is life in early 2019. It can be hard to comprehend how someone walks through the sickness and death of a child. It can be hard to understand how they continue to rely on God when everything feels like its falling apart. Listen is as Kelly talks about how her family — and Tyler — accomplished this even as death stood at their door. What we talked about: * The Upset by Tyler Trent* When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi* Tyler receiving the ESPN award* Streams in the Desert book* Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy by Mark Vroegop* Nothing is Wasted Ministries (we didn’t talk about this, but it is a good resource for those going through many kinds of grief) Connect with Kelly: * Facebook* Twitter* Instagram Recent Episodes: * Achieving Impossible Dreams: The Atlantic’s Elaina Plott on the Record* Hospitality and Loving Others Well: Leslie Verner’s Beautiful Call* Combatting Lies Women Believe: Lisa Graft’s Inspiring Vision
John Driver had the privilege of writing a book with Tyler Trent. When Tyler was 15, he was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of bone cancer. When he was a 20 year old student at Purdue, he had beaten the cancer and had it return multiple times. At Purdue, his love for life, football, and the Lord became apparent and would soon be known by people around the world. Tyler became an honorary Purdue team captain. His story went viral on ESPN and his prediction of Purdue's upset over highly ranked Ohio State became a metaphor for Tyler's life. Stricken with cancer, barely able to move or speak, Tyler showed the world that, in Christ, when we are weak, He is strong. John Driver shares his perspective of Tyler's life as a pastor and author and as one of many who was inspired by Tyler's life. You could go into the "why" questions and wonder how such a young boy (age of 15 when he was first diagnosed) could get such a horrible disease. But when you listen to his heart, it's full of kindness and compassion. A love for life, even in the toughest days. All of us are fighting battles, some that tear us up like cancer and threaten our lives; and others are battles that have consequences, just not so drastic. When life seems to hurl struggles, battles, wars, and enemies directly at you, live with a kind heart. The K.I.S.S. ~ Be kind! God reminds us to.... "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." ~ Ephesians 4:32 Are you carrying around baggage that needs to be discarded? Who do you need to forgive? What do you need to move away from so you can move toward what God is showing you? "Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart." ~ Proverbs 3:3 As I watched Tyler speak to the ESPN commentator, you could see his heart filled with kindness and compassion. He has every right to be angry at the world, and some would argue even against God. But that was not him. Tyler Trent thrust in the spotlight because of something he never asked for, yet consumed with hope, kindness, and compassion. Wear a kind heart today! Ask God to reveal the areas where your heart is decaying. And then ask for His strength to remove it and replace it with kindness. "Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see." ~ Mark Twain "A kind heart...your beacon of light." TAKE A.I.M. ~ Action Ignites Motivation - This is a complimentary (FREE) coaching call with me. You will be able to discuss your specific situation and gain tools and strategies to move you forward. Purdue quarterback David Blough talks Christmas Day memories, seven trips to South Africa, Tyler Trent and reveals a nickname from his past that he hasn't shared until now.
It's CHRISTmas time! In the Christian calendar we call this the season of Advent. We who practice the celebration of Advent, do so because we are looking forward to something... according to Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Celebration of Advent is possible only to those who are troubled in soul, who know themselves to be poor and imperfect, and who look forward to something greater to come. The journey to CHRISTmas is about knowing with clarity that God is with us in every moment. Through our pain. God is with us. He is with us in the waiting. God's being ever present gives us courage when we feel anxious and the storm swells. In this Fourth Sunday of Advent , we light the candle of Joy. It's a simple message as we look at the scriptures that speak to this amazing truth: the Incarnation. All that we believe hangs on this truth...God with Us. The Hope of CHRISTmas is made real when we look at how those around us enter into a deeper faith. One person, young Tyler Trent, from Purdue, who is struggling with terminal cancer offers his testimony: God is with Us. Tyler's story video HERE

Later, Pro introduces a new segment titled, "A reading from the book of.." where he highlights one of the guys' blogs from this past week.
