Today we're sitting down with Brandon Black, known for his breakout role in A Madea Homecoming under the direction of Tyler Perry. But this conversation goes deeper than film, it's about identity, industry, and what it really means to be seen.Host:Let's talk about the acting world right now. Streaming has changed everything—access, visibility, even what success looks like. How do you see the industry today compared to when you first started pursuing acting?I sat down with Brandon Black and talked about:Do you feel like actors today have more opportunity, or just more competition and noise? There's also this pressure now to be more than an actor you have to be a brand, a personality, a presence online. How do you balance being an artist versus being visible?Have you ever felt like the industry tried to put you in a box creatively? And if so, how did you push back?..Brandon Black is not just an artist just stepping into roles, but stepping into purpose. From A Madea Homecoming to what's next, this is only the beginning of a much larger story.Instagram @bblackJamirSmith.com
Gillian Flynn's novel Gone Girl defined a literary niche when it first came out in 2012, and it still defines it to this day. David Fincher's great 2014 adaptation—written in collaboration with Flynn—is one of the greatest and most fun movie thrillers of the 21st century. Now I want to present you with a terrifying scenario: What if this book had come out three years later, and instead of this glorious 2.5-hour film, we got a boring 12-hour streaming series? Come on, you can see it right now in your mind: Episode 3 is a flashback to Amy's life as a child, with none of the regular actors in it. Episode 9 is the Desi episode, and Amy finally arrives at his door right before the closing credits. No thank you. And so 1-Week Rental is here to take you through the history of that movie. How Gillian Flynn wrote her novel and then worked closely with Fincher on the production, how perfect the casting of both Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike was, how Reese Witherspoon produced the movie with the intention of playing Amazing Amy herself only to be told by Fincher she was all wrong for the part, and how this movie is loosely based on the lives of Laci Roth and Matt Stokes. Did you know that? Watch the history segment in full on YouTube: https://youtu.be/i0WuyvYAyrg We're off next week (June 5, 2026). The next episode will be out on Friday, June 12, 2026 when our summer miniseries begins. The Summer of Nolan opens with a podcast about Christopher Nolan's Memento (2000)! Time stamps: 00:05:50 — History segment: Gillian Flynn writes the Gone Girl novel; movie optioned by Reese Witherspoon and David Fincher is hired to direct; career of Rosamund Pike; career of Ben Affleck 00:51:40 — Movie discussion 02:38:20 — Final thoughts & star ratings Gone Girl (2014) was directed by David Fincher. On this episode of Black and Snerdy, Ode (@thatsod.e / @thatsod_e) and Mo "Kid" Licorish (@licorishislegit) celebrate Mother's Day with an all-new segment called "This or That: Mother's Day Edition," ranking and debating the greatest Black mothers in pop culture history. They kick things off with a spirited Claire Huxtable vs. Aunt Viv showdown — weighing Phylicia Rashad's groundbreaking prototype against Janet Hubert's cultural backbone — then move to Florida Evans vs. Rochelle Rock, breaking down Esther Rolle's improvised "damn, damn, damn" moment and Tichina Arnold's no-nonsense energy on Everybody Hates Chris. The matchups keep coming as they pit Cookie Lyon against Tasha St. Patrick, with Taraji P. Henson's scenery-chewing Empire reign earning unanimous love, and then tackle a real-life triple threat of Tina Knowles, Donda West, and Afeni Shakur, debating whose motherhood legacy — living or lost — left the deepest imprint on Black culture. The bonus mom round brings Sheryl Lee Ralph's Dee Mitchell from Moesha against Kellita Smith's Wanda from The Bernie Mac Show, sparking a heartfelt conversation about stepparenting and chosen family. Rapid-fire picks fly as they crown favorites between Dr. Lucy Carmichael and Dr. Trudy Proud, Queen Ramonda and Queen Aoleon, Bo Johnson and Miranda Bailey, Lisa Landry and Jay Kyle, and Sugar Mama and Madea — with Angela Bassett Oscar snub discourse, Tracee Ellis Ross appreciation, and a passionate takedown of Tyler Perry's portrayal of Black women all packed in. Before and after the matchups, they also roast Wicked for Good's questionable sequel choices, Michelle Yeoh's singing debut, and Colman Domingo's blink-and-you-miss-it Cowardly Lion, then close out with their Big Mad and Big Happy segments rounding out a stacked Mother's Day celebration.

Von is back with episode 62 of the Von Talks podcast and in this episode he starts off by asking how the people are doing and hopes that everything is good for the most part. He talks about the new game Pragmata and the forced hate surrounding it, but it's not working because the game is actually too good to hate on. He talks about watching one of the Madea plays which isn't that bad to be honest. Not a Tyler Perry fan by any means but from what I saw he used to be a good writer. Moving on he didn't listen to much music but he continues to praise POMPEII//UTILITY. To end the show, you already know he stresses the importance of saving and investing your money and to prepare for the future. Join Luke Kerr and Jamey Giddens as they reminisce over the show's 1200 episodes, dive into Jamey's award-winning writing career, the great news of Beyond the Gates' two year renewal and reveals publicly for the first time the cancer diagnosis and treatment he underwent over the past year. The duo discusses Jamey's evolution from soap opera journalist to daytime and primetime soap opera writer on shows like The Rich and the Ruthless, Tyler Perry's Sistas, Days of Our Lives and Beyond the Gates. Jamey recounts the impact of Will Packer's mentorship through their show Ambitions and acknowledges the karma in going from a podcast journalist critiquing TV writing to being on the receiving end of fan critiques. The two celebrate the two-year renewal of Beyond the Gates, what it means for the show and for the soap opera genre as an industry. Jamey credits Michelle Val Jean for the show's success and gives a shout out to the show's amazing cast, crew, writing team and production assistant. Luke and Jamey observe how daytime talk shows are being slaughtered by video podcasts and which talk shows remain unique while others seem to be Oprah or Ellen knockoffs. Luke and Jamey remember early Daytime Confidential listener The Best, better known as Tiggz, and co-host of The Chat. Our thoughts go out to those closest to him. Luke and Jamey delve into the nuance of the WGA's new deal with the studios. What if the most powerful moves in business happen BEFORE you even walk into the room? Jeremy Zimmer built one of Hollywood's most dominant agencies from a boutique small business to a global empire by understanding one thing: deals are won or lost long before anyone sits down to negotiate. Jeremy Zimmer is the co-founder and former CEO of United Talent Agency (UTA), representing names like Christopher Nolan, M. Night Shyamalan, Charlize Theron, Harrison Ford, and Samuel L. Jackson. He started in the William Morris mailroom after flunking out of college and getting stabbed working a parking lot. He built UTA into a powerhouse through 19 acquisitions in 13 years, stood up to Harvey Weinstein before anyone else would, and spent decades competing ruthlessly with Ari Emanuel while staying profitable. In this conversation, he breaks down how to spot real talent, how to win deals before they start, and why taste will always matter more than execution. You'll learn: Why the best agents can spot creative genius in 10 pages and what separates taste from execution Why getting rid of toxic high performers makes companies stronger even when it feels terrifying How competing with Ari Emanuel for decades taught him to emulate the best and ignore the rest Why talent is becoming landlords and how 50 Cent and Tyler Perry are rewriting the Hollywood playbook The future of Hollywood: consolidation, AI, and why the platforms are the real competition now Start your newsletter today with beehiiv! Michael shares a story about Tyler Perry giving away gift cards to TSA employees in Atlanta, while Denver International Airport was soliciting similar gift cards for their employees, raising questions about the fairness of the rules. We explore the concept of prohibited sources and how it relates to the situation, and discuss the implications of selective enforcement in government. It's a thought-provoking conversation that challenges the idea of ethics and fairness in government.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Good day, Scorekeepers! It's time for another jam-packed episode of your favorite podcast, THE SCORE. This week, we're once again tackling the somewhat mystifying career of Mr. Tyler Perry. Recently Youtuber F.D. Signifier released a scathing 4-hour critique of Perry's oeuvre and we were sat for the whole thing. Highly recommend it! And with so much material to work with, naturally there were some things we agreed with, some we didn't, and some that just straight up confused us. Let's talk about it! In this episode, Dr. Boyce Watkins breaks down the shocking business story shaking up Black media: Tyler Perry and BET Plus potentially being swallowed into Paramount's larger corporate structure. What does this mean for Black ownership, Black media, and the future of Black economic power in entertainment?Tyler Perry has built one of the most powerful independent media empires in history, creating billions of dollars in value through films, television, and his historic Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. Meanwhile, BET Plus, a streaming platform built around Black storytelling, has become a key player in digital entertainment for Black audiences. But as major corporations consolidate power, many are asking an important question: Will Black media remain independent, or will it continue to be absorbed by larger corporate conglomerates like Paramount Global? In this video, Dr. Boyce Watkins analyzes the business strategy behind Paramount's media consolidation, the economics of streaming platforms, the importance of Black ownership in Hollywood, and what this could mean for the long-term future of Black entertainment and Black wealth creation. If Tyler Perry's empire becomes more closely tied to Paramount, is this a smart business move—or another example of how large corporations swallow independent success? This conversation goes deeper than celebrity headlines. It's about power, ownership, intellectual property, and who controls the economic future of Black culture in media and entertainment.Dr. Boyce Watkins is a Finance PhD, economist, and the founder of The Black Business School, where millions of students have learned how to build wealth through stock market investing, entrepreneurship, real estate, and financial literacy. He is the author of the bestselling book The 10 Commandments of Black Economic Power and has appeared on major media platforms including CNN, BET, The Breakfast Club, and MSNBC. Through his daily commentary and educational programs, Dr. Watkins helps Black families understand generational wealth, economic empowerment, and the power of ownership. To learn more about building wealth and economic independence, visit BoyceWatkins.com.
A Note from James:This is why I love doing podcasts—talking to people like Dr. Sheena Howard, author of Why Wakanda Matters. Wakanda is the country where Black Panther is from, and Sheena has written extensively about comics, including work on Black Panther itself. We talk about comics, race, and storytelling. I asked a question I was almost afraid to ask—whether the Black Panther movie was racist against other Black people—and she gave a surprising answer. We also talk about a time she was abducted in Jamaica, along with a lot of other topics.I loved this conversation. Please listen. Episode Description:James sits down with Dr. Sheena Howard—scholar, comic book writer, and Eisner Award winner—for a conversation that moves between pop culture, publishing, and personal survival. They use Black Panther as a lens to examine how stories shape identity, how representation evolves, and why cultural narratives are often filtered through systems that weren't built to support them. Sheena breaks down the tension between nationalism and isolationism in Wakanda, and why audiences interpret the same story in radically different ways. The conversation also goes deeper—into how gatekeeping works in publishing today, how creators can bypass it, and why building your own audience may be the most reliable path forward. And then there's the story she didn't tell for years: being abducted at 19. What happened, why she stayed silent, and what it reveals about psychology, fear, and resilience. This episode is about storytelling—but also about control: who has it, who doesn't, and how to take it back. What You'll Learn:Why “Black superheroes don't sell” is a myth—and how the industry perpetuates it anywayThe real gatekeeping mechanism in publishing today (and why audience ownership matters more than ever)How subtle bias shows up now—not in obvious barriers, but in shifting goalpostsWhat makes a story resonate across audiences (and why Black Panther worked at scale)The psychology of abusive situations—and how awareness and boundaries are built over timeTimestamped Chapters:[03:04] A Note from James[03:53] Favorite Superheroes: From Captain America to Black Panther[04:27] Why Black Panther Connected Culturally[04:43] The $1.2B Question: Why So Late for Black Superheroes?[05:17] Luke Cage, Netflix, and the “Myth” That Black Stories Don't Sell[05:39] Tyler Perry and the “Outlier” Problem[06:23] Pressure on Black-Led Films to Be Perfect[07:00] What Wakanda Represents (Uncolonized Possibility)[07:53] Killmonger: Anger, Oppression, and Relatability[08:23] MLK vs. Malcolm X Parallel in Black Panther[09:00] Identity Formation: African vs. African American Perspectives[09:47] Are Black Superheroes Designed to “Feel Safe”?[10:28] Gentrification, Stereotypes, and Media Influence[11:50] Media Isn't “Just Entertainment”[12:00] Early Representation and Cultural Messaging[12:28] Who Created Black Panther—and Why That Matters[13:07] Rewriting History: What Would She Change?[13:49] Designing a Modern Black Superhero[14:47] Why a Modern Hero Might Be “Invisible”[15:44] Publishing Barriers and Gatekeeping Conversations[16:36] Social Media vs. Traditional Publishing Access[17:26] Building 163K Followers—and Still Not Enough[21:47] The Instagram Post: “I Was Abducted at 19”[22:11] How It Started: Cheap Tour, No Money, Bad Decision[23:05] The Trap: Locked House and Escalation[25:00] Refusal and Survival Strategy[26:02] Car Crash and Escape Attempt[27:00] Walking Away and Getting Home[28:30] Why She Stayed Silent for Years[29:20] Abusive Relationships and Self-Blame[30:26] Leaving Abuse: The Role of Her Son[31:06] Love Bombing and Early Warning Signs[33:02] Recognizing Red Flags in Relationships[35:45] Teaching Kids Boundaries and Self-Worth[37:21] “Is Wakanda Racist?”—The Big Question[38:00] Nationalism vs. Racism Explained[39:00] Isolationism vs. Imperialism[41:00] Why Some Black Superheroes Don't Break Out[43:00] The Loss (and Survival) of Great Storytelling[46:14] How She Got Hired by Marvel (Cold Email + PI)[48:29] Why Pitching Ideas to Marvel Often Fails[50:00] Cold Outreach: Being Seen Before Heard[52:00] Do You Need Social Media to Sell Books?
