Send us a textWelcome to Guilders-Ford Radio, a Necromunda podcast broadcasting from the East Gate Docks of Hive Primus (via Guildford Games Club, Surrey, UK).This episode of Guilders-Ford Radio lands hot on the heels of Rosco and Leigh's recent trip to Broxbourne Wargames Club's ‘Scratcher's Spill' narrative weekender.Joined by Broxbourne co-founder and returning guest of the show Adam Smith, the boys give a blow-by-blow account of the weekend's misdeeds, while Adam shares the challenges and triumphs of running your own Necromunda event. This month has seen Necromunda's hives reinforced with brand new Palanite Enforcer minatures and a fantastic new book, Bastions of Law. With precious little time with the tome ahead of recording, what do the GFR gang make of the post-Book of Judgement changes? As ever, we round up the episode with an update on our recent hobby - with Dixie literally surrounded by Prussians, and Leigh completely obsessed with the new AK-Interactive paint pens. We'd like to take the opportunity to thank all our listeners who have chosen to support us on Patreon & Buzzsprout - your contributions help us make a better show!• Flow • Denny Wright • Stefan Sahlin • Matt Miler • Matti Puh • Nick McVett •Warhammer in the Dark •From_Somewhere • Alfonso • The Traitor • Johnny DeVille • Stephan B • Jeff Nelson • Lankydiceroller • Morskul • Beau • Justin Clark • Dr.Toe • Mikael Livas • Josh Reynolds • StandStab • ChestDrain • Scott Spieker • Tucker Steel • Shaughn • Stewart Young • Goatincoat • Jason • Joseph Serrani • Billy • Phil • Stephen Griffiths • Søren D • Spruewhisperer • Kevin Fowler • Scott Spieker • Andy Tabor • TheMichaelNimmo • Tucker Steel • Dave Shearman • Shaughn • Stewart Young •Damien Davis • Wayne Jeffrey • Frawgenstein • Matthey Mulcahy • William Payne •Thomas Laycock • Stephen Livingston • Tyler Anderson • McGobbo • Jed Tearle • Gene Archibald • James Marsden • John Haynes • Ryan Taylor • Yuki van Elzelingen • Dick Linehan • Rhinoxrifter • Shawn Hall • Eric McKenzie • Paul Shaw • Jenifer • Drew Williams • Greg Miller • Andy Farrell • Nate Combrink • Don Johnson • Michael Yule • Joe Roberts • TheRedWolf • Lukasz Jainski • Aaron Vissers • One Punch Orlock (Tom) • Matt Price • ShnubutsSupport the showHelp us make better content, and download free community resources!www.patreon.com/guildersfordradioAny comments, questions or corrections? This we imagine the unthinkable as we talk about Barry's Steamer: Fourmi World, the Parks board game, Slay the Spire, Sharks, Absolute DC, Close to Death, the Alien Hotel in Baker, Baker California, Bone Lake, The Boys, War Games, Defcon, Death of a Unicorn, Swedish Bastards, Ventriloquist Dummies, Xbox Game Pass price hikes, Amazon's Luna, EA sold to Saudi Arabia and Private Equity, Simpsons Movie 2, Magic: The Gathering expansions, a remake of Magic, and Clockwork Torgo: WarGames. Prepare to be "a-salted", it's time for a GeekShock!
For our final Hollywood Week episode, we welcome iconic character actor and comedian Eddie Deezen for a career retrospective exploring his journey from performing stand-up at The Comedy Store to becoming Hollywood's go-to "nerd" character in beloved films. Eddie shares his origin story growing up in Cumberland, Maryland, moving to Los Angeles after graduating high school in 1975, and his breakout role as Eugene Felsnic in the 1977 blockbuster Grease. That led to high-profile comedy films including Robert Zemeckis' I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Steven Spielberg's 1941, Midnight Madness, WarGames, and Grease 2. We explore his transition to independent films including cult favorites like Surf II, and his successful pivot to voice acting in the mid-80s, landing iconic roles as Mandark in Dexter's Laboratory and the Know-It-All in The Polar Express. You can keep up with all things Deezen by following Eddie on Facebook.Support the show___________________Check out video versions of this and other episodes on YouTube: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits!If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts or wherever you found this episode. When does comedy become more than a laugh? Ben Mangrum of MIT joins RtB to discuss his new book, The Comedy of Computation: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Obsolescence (Stanford UP, 2025), which in some ways is organized around “the intriguing idea that human knowledge work is our definitive feature and yet the machines we are ourselves made are going to replace us at it.” Comedy has provided a toolbox (Charles Tilly calls them "collective repertoires") for responding to the looming obsolescence of knowledge workers.John's interest in Menippean satire within science fiction leads him to ask about about the sliding meanings of comedy and its pachinko machine capacity; he loves the way Ben uses the word and concept of doubling,; Ben explains how the computer may either queer (in an antisocial way) or get assimilated into romantic heteronormative pairings. John asks about Donna Haraway's 1985 A Cyborg Manifesto and teh way it denaturalizes gender roles and the way new technological affordances (from the Acheulean axe that Malafouris discusses to the Apple watch) redefine human roles. Ben delves into the minstrelsy pre-history of the photo-robots going as far back as the late 19th century. They unpack the distinctively American Leo Marxian optimism of The Machine in the Garden (1964) that spreads back as far as the proto-robots like The Steam Man of the Prairies(1868) and good old Tik-Tok in the Wizard of Oz novels. John asks about double-edged nature of Ben's claim that comic “genericity provides forms for making a computationally mediated social world seem more habitable, even as it also provides Is for criticizing and objecting to that world." First you get description says Ben--and then sometimes critique. John asks about the iterability of the new: how much of what seems new actually New New (in the sense of that great 1999 Michael Lewis book, The New New Thing)? Mentioned in the episode: The Desk Set a play William Marchand and a movie starring Katherine Hepburn. How might a computer be incorporated into the sociability of a couple? Her (Spike Jonze,, 2013) computer meets human makes the rom-com into a coupling machine. WarGames (1983( ends with Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy (not Ione Skye—silly John!) paired. But also with Broderick and the formerly deadly computer settling down to “how about a nice game of chess”? Black Mirror as the 2020's version of the same dark satire as the 1950's Twilight Zone. John asks about Stanislaw Lem's Cyberiad, and the comic coupling of Kirk and Spock and the death-as-computer comedy of Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979). Leo Marx, The Machine in the Garden (1964). Dave Eggers: the joke structure as critique in The Circle and The Every. Hey Now Cabalists! Today Don and Jamie share their time at one of the best game stores they've ever experienced - Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie, Maryland. Then the gang dives into a bunch of games they've been playing, including The Presence, Mythwind, Etherstone, Shackleton Base, and Age of Galaxy. Don, Chris, and Jamie throw down a feature review of Tea Garden from Tomas Holek and Capstone Games. And after Tony T's legendary news segment, the gang tackles a slew of listener questions like what types of players we most enjoy gaming with, whether Kickstarting board games has become too volatile, and how to handle the dreaded phrase: We got it, let's just play. The boys talk about War Games have become Word Games. The power of words to influence and divide a generation and a nation.
This week on NAFC, Izzy's late—but that doesn't stop Gibbs and Mox from going deep. Gibbs kicks things off with a full-on rant about David Fincher's The Game and why it might be the original gaslight simulator. Mox and Gibbs also continue their running obsession with Alien Earth, throwing around more speculation than science. Once Izzy finally rolls in, he brings fresh takes on Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1—yes, it's hype, yes, people cried, and yes, scalpers are still the worst. The crew closes things out with their review of WarGames (1983), the Cold War classic that asks: what if a teenage hacker accidentally started World War III with a dial-up modem? Saul and Jolene went to a couple conventions in late August and Early September. In late August they went to Galaxycon in San Jose. It takes place in downtown San Jose at the McEnery Center. It is the largest convention center in the South Bay. Saul was really impressed with all the guest speaker, panels, activities that were available at Galaxycon. This was Jolenes and Sauls first time attending a Galaxycon. Both came away impressed with the con and it was a very fun experience for the both of them. Pacifcon is over Labor Day weekend and Saul and Jolene went on a Saturday once again. Saul and Jolene met up with old friends and made new ones playing an RPG called Troika and Boardgames. Pacificon strengths are War Games and Miniature Games. They also have full days of boardgames, organized play, and Protospiel. A nice little con over Labor Day weekend. Thank you all for listening. "Shall we play a game?" Okay, let's play, "Where the hell are this kid's parents?" In 1983's War Games, our teenage techie (played by Matthew Broderick) is able to skip school for a week, hack into computers, and get arrested for espionage without even getting grounded. Now though, is truancy this kid's lightest offense? How does this film's "computers are people too" storyline hold up in our AI age? And why is Ally Sheedy's character such a fast runner? Hearken, ye Cabalists! Gather round, for this day the Lords convene in discourse. They speak first of Jamie and AC's newest chronicle of dread and mystery, wrought in the Call of Cthulhu. Thereafter, a query from a faithful listener shall be pondered, touching upon the use of relics and tokens within the gaming hall. Lastly, the Roundtable shall be set, where wisdom is shared on the keeping of momentum and the weariness that oft befalls the Game Master. Raise thy voices in mirth! Huzzah!

This week, as media reports suggest that the US is considering withdrawing its troops from the Baltics, we break down what presence the US really has on NATO's eastern flank. We look at the large-scale military exercises being led by other NATO allies in the Baltics – in symbolic opposition to the joint Zapad drills of Russia and Belarus – as well as the fiscal difficulties European countries now face trying to fund greater defence spending. We discuss this in the context of Russian sanctions, as Europe prepares a 19th package of measures, but many countries maintain business ties with Moscow via third-party countries.
In Episode 29, DDSWTNP go to space to get a good look at the earth in a time of war, turning to one of DeLillo's greatest short stories, “Human Moments in World War III,” first published in July 1983. We examine this tale of two future astronauts who have become soldiers for its strategic engagement with the tropes of science fiction, its eerie portrayals of the so-called “Overview Effect” available from a spacecraft window, and its compression and renewal of motifs from Americana, End Zone, and Ratner's Star. Nostalgia, patriotism, history, the soldier's mindset in following inhuman commands, and even the role of poetry and voice – all these come to be recast in DeLillo's shrewd take on an era of “Star Wars” defense initiatives, a Cold War giving way to hot wars, and very tricky ways out of Mutually Assured Destruction. Along the way we read the 1980s thoughts of an expert on lasers in space, consider what it means to have an alien perspective on one's earthly home and diurnal rhythms, and speculate on connections between “Human Moments” and White Noise still to come. Texts referred to and discussed in this episode: Don DeLillo. “Human Moments in World War III.” Published in Esquire (July 1983) and reprinted in The Angel Esmeralda (2011). Philip M. As we'rew approaching our 10th edition we thought it might be fun to avail ourselves of an all too rare opportunity - to get someone heavily involved in a Doctor Who project to make their own contribiutoon to its Happy Times and Places. Fortunately Benjamin Cook, who was in charge of the recent The War Games in Colour broadcast, was more than happy to share his thoughts and insights regarding this huge undertaking. So here we go - and what a joy it is to get his perspective into the making of this alternative version. Oh, and your host is positively encouraged by Ben to be honest about any perceived shortcomings ... and he is equally bold and forthright in his opinion - entertainingly so! Ben is, of course, brimming with positivity and fascinating facts - from the inside, from directly behind-the-scenes and we are really grateful to him for the time and care he has taken over his contribution. Oh, but he does say a mildly rude word towards the end, you have been warned. #doctorwho #doctorwhoreaction #doctorwhocommentary #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. Timberborn is one of those Early Access games that we missed covering at its original launch, and we're not sure when it's going to be actually done... so what better time to talk about it than now, honestly? Len, Ian, Mike, and Sin sink their oversized incisors into the beaver city builder to discuss its ecological themes, potential for hydrological urbanism, and where it's at in its development journey.
Greetings, noble Cabalists! This day, the Lords do commence their grand convocation by heeding a missive from a most inquisitive listener, who doth inquire how they divine their next realm of adventure, be it by the singular vision of a lone Game Master, or by the council and clamor of the whole round table. Thereafter, the fellowship embarks upon a most profound discourse concerning the art of embodying one's hero, weaving a soul and spirit into the character, and bringing them to life through word and deed. Hark, and be entertained!
