In this delightfully WEIRD installment of Pop Periscope, Christina and Michael recount his unforgettable experience meeting the one and only Weird Al Yankovic on his "Bigger and Weirder Tour". From backstage nerves to accordion-induced awe, Michael shares his personal highlights and surreal moments from their fan encounter with the parody legend. But the episode doesn't stop at selfies and setlists—we dive into the big questions: Could Weird Al ever headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show? Why isn't he in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? This episode celebrates the genius, humor, and legacy of a true musical icon. PS, the Word of the Day: WEIRD — and we mean that in the best possible way.

When I discovered that Weird Al was actually on the bill at the most eclectic festival lineup I'd ever seen ("I can see Agnostic Front and Weird Al on the same day?!?" was my initial response) I had to drop "Start a Pac-Man-related cult" from my bucket list to make room for "participate in a Weird Al pit."* This has been one of many situational exceptions I've had to make to my well-documented "Too Old For The Pit" rule. I made perhaps too many exceptions during the weekend of Riot Fest, as my ribs remain bruised (presumably from Sunday's Screeching Weasel prancings,) but I appear to have survived. Highlights that I was unable to fit into the song: 1. A dude dressed as a banana in said pit 2. A dude dressed as Jesus in said pit (I told him "Hey! I read your book!") 3. Moshing to "Ricky." Seriously. "Ricky." 4. Watching Steve Jay and Jim West occasionally take photos of said pit 5. Watching a dude on the edge of said pit explain to his teenaged daughter the cardinal rule of "someone goes down, you help them up." Felt that in my soul. Special thanks to Al, whose birthday is next week. And also to my wife, for encouraging me to go to this thing. And to MC Lars for absolving me of the inadvertent theft of his "damn, son" bit. And to Dr. Demento for the years upon years of support...it just hit me that this is the first song I've ever released that has NO chance whatsoever of being played on the Dr. Demento show. But damned if he didn't end the show strong as hell, and on his own terms. (Barry, if you're reading this, all the best in your retirement.) * Apologies to anyone who has already converted their worldly posessions to tokens in anticipation of said cult. No refunds. This week, Donnie speaks with Ryan Posner, a Los Angeles-based bass player, side man and musical director, about balancing his home and professional life, how to define country music, why it is important to push art forward and how bass players make great dads. They dive deep into the value of his current project, the nearly weekly Y'all Star Revue, a showcase at the original Desert 5 Spot in Hollywood. This event highlights the best local and touring country music talent who are on the verge of breaking out. Show Notes1:50 -- Ryan's origin story: From a 16-year-old rocker to figuring out playing country music right before the pandemic. He tells Donnie that his first concert was Willie Nelson at age five and his second concert was Weird Al opening for the Monkees in the early 1980s -- which really summarized his musical existence. Until he watched Ken Burns' Country Music documentary.6:38 -- Bass players make great dads: Ryan has always been attracted, and it seems that the Country Music Dads are attracted to bass players. Perhaps the kind of person who likes to play bass is also the kind of person who wants to be a dad. 8:58 -- How do you truly balance the parenting? Being honest is a good start. 10:40 -- What is The Y'all Star Revue, and what is the impact of this program on country music?17:25 -- What is real country music? Ryan ends the debate of what country music is and what it is not. His platform is to share new music with new audiences. 20:19 -- Freedom from Choice: Ryan hopes that his new curated platform can help bring so many different kinds of music together to help develop a new experience outside of the over-saturation of the Los Angeles music scene. He prefers “freedom from choice” rather than “freedom of choice.” 22:19 -- More Debate on What Makes Real Country Music: But does this kind of platform push country music too far? Ryan says no. There is no line too far. Country music evolves just like every other kind of music, and the only person who can define “real” country music for that person is that person. 30:55 -- The Dad Life Sound Check: Ryan brings “Funny How Time Slips Away” by Willie Nelson, and Donnie talked about Waylon's “Songbird.”38:15 -- THE LIGHTNING ROUND, which gets completely derailed by the last question about the one concert you could attend at any time. Josh Snyder returns to the bench to host this game with more mishegas (Yiddish for shenanigans) than Michigan for returning guest Jake Manne. Eric Ede and Jake bury the hatchet long enough to team up against Scott and David Luks, who find out Jake's dad is a fellow 8/5er. As chaos reigns during "Pre- and Post-Game ..and Concessions", there are multiple concussions as Luks and Ede are nearly broken by Snyder's rule-breaking. Scott resorts to Kraken Skulls, David is down, and Jake pulls a Markkus. Ede is bouncing between frustration that he knows the answer but doesn't know why or how and using his geography bee and deep Weird Al discography to insta-check, while Jake lies on the ground with a hatchet in his back. By the time everyone is done flopping after an epic finish, a new Benchwarmer (Menschwarmer? After an experience so profound, the rest of this world has become meaningless. What do I mean, you may ask? Well, my friends. You can experience it to. All you have to do is give yourself to God. Our true Lord and Savior. May I ask you to do something selfish, for my sake? Please pray with me. Dear Lord, Oh bless us, our Lord. Lay upon us your wisdom and your kick ass beats! May your light shine across the globe and may love blossom in even the darkest of places. May your words touch the hearts of others, as they have touched mine. May your gloriously curly hair and magical accordion skills keep us all enthralled for eternity. It was but another day to you, my Lord, but this humble servant will never forget watching you perform. To hear your angelic voice and see you in the flesh for the first time. My life is finally complete. I will spend the rest of my days spreading your name and message. Your words and melodies must be heard! In Weird Al's name we pray, amen. Anyhoo, I'm not here to sell you religion. I'm here to sell you a podcast! That's right! We have absolutely no affiliation with Mr. Yankovich. I am just using his name to gain listeners! MUHAHA The RPGrinders podcast is recorded LIVE the first 3 Fridays of the month. Three people, who are totally not sharing one mic in the basement of my mom's house. We like to argue with and alienate our listen... I mean, we love to talk to our chatters. As we read the gaming news, give or reviews, or talk about the crap that pissed me off that week! So, what do you say? Give it a listen. Or how else will you find out the release dates for Battle Suit Aces, Merge Match March, and Rise Eterna 2. Don't say "the internet" because that is cheating! Don't be a cheater, just listen to our show. Or how would you know the Stinkos without listening? To "the internet," I say nay! Besides, you can complain with me or tell me how wrong I am. That's never caused any arguments on this show... But why would anyone disagree with my one-sided takes on politics and everything else that annoys me? All of the crap coming from the current administration and their war on facts. They stepped-up their war on the Freedom of Speech, while trying to turn a bad man into a martyr. On top of all that, beloved actor Robert Redford died. Oh, and the other hosts had some stuff too. Don't let any of those Stinkos get you down, because our Sweetos will bring you back up. After all, I finally saw God. He was glorious. The other hosts experiences were far less spiritual, but none the less uplifting. Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! This is only a sample of our show. Just a small taste of what we give. So, drop to your hands and pray to the one true savior, "Weird" Al Yankovic and give us a shout out too! The bad news is that I'm posting this episode late. The good news it's there now, so get off my back! No one will ever remember I was late. MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I don't care what anyone thinks, Slime Creatures From Outer Space freaking rules!!

Insert all your tired 2025 jokes here because after the last nine months, we're pretty much out as this episode, we go All-Voyager, All the Time with a slate of episodes concerning ‘The Year of Hell,' one of Voyager's more infamous wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey moments. In ‘Before and After,' we see the writers try and tease out what never comes to pass as a time-displaced Kes discovers something horrifying, Harry Kim married her two-year old daughter! Then we go into two-part territory as we enter ‘The Year of Hell' and a lot of bad things happen to Voyager while Kurtwood Smith makes us ask ‘Is Annorax Star Trek's best villain?' But seriously… Harry Kim married a two year old and I don't care if she's a short lived alien race, that's real weird, especially considering who the father is!Episodes Discussed: Before and After (08:29), Year of Hell Parts 1 and 2 (38:25)Talking Points Include: Miles has a quota of Ed Gein jokes per year. Weird Al, The Devils, One Piece, Harry Kim marrying a 2 year old, Tom Paris asking for time off to have sex, the Voyager Homecoming comic, Miles requests Charlie do a Planet Wales for his next Star Trek RPG campaign, Annorax might be the best Star Trek villain, Miles doesn't platinum video games, Kurtwood Smith might play Trek's best villain, Chakotay actually getting to do something, Year of Hell failed so that Battlestar Galactica could soar, would it have worked as a year long season? How sometimes, compromises and failures can make a great TV show, probably for the best Tuvoy didn't lose a leg, does Harry ever get a promotion? History changing stories usually have one set ending and the much needed keyfabe of ongoing media.

Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast
Although he was already popular with fans of Dr. Demento, "Weird Al" Yankovic scored a top-40 hit with "Eat It" in 1984 from the album In 3-D, and followed it up with one of the best comedy albums ever in Dare to Be Stupid. It seemed that a "Weird Al" parody was just the thing an artist needed to be relevant. Or, that was what his label Scotti Bros. thought. Instead of letting him do what he does best, they started making suggestions. Combine that with a year that didn't produce the greatest pop songs and we get the first dud from the master of parody, Polka Party!. onate to the podcast through Patreon... https://www.patreon.com/ericwincentsen728 Or PayPal eloftmpodcast@gmail.com P.O. In this episode of Poducer, recorded live at Summer's End Smokeout in Republic, Michigan, we sit down with Porch (Nick Loporchio) — a multi-instrumentalist and producer whose journey bridges music, science, and spirit. From his first spark of inspiration through Weird Al parodies to years of playing guitar, handbells, and powerlifting, Porch opens up about the pivotal injury that led him toward reggae, bass, and ultimately the Porch project. He shares stories from touring with his band Iya Terra (200+ shows a year across the U.S. and abroad) and how his sound evolved into a fusion of roots, funk, hip-hop, and heavy dub. We dive into his scientific background in molecular biology, exploring how concepts like epigenetics and energy transfer connect to sound, and why he sees music as a kind of “potion.” Porch also reflects on the spiritual side of creation, from the unique frequencies of Joshua Tree to the vibrations we carry in everyday life.

My guest today is Nashville-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Dylan Sevey, best known for his work with The Minks, Ron Gallo, Aaron Lee Tasjan, and the incredible Weird Al Yankovic tribute band Weird Pals. Dylan joins me to discuss Weird Al's 1999 masterpiece 'Running With Scissors'. We chat about the entirely unique place Weird Al has carved for himself within the music industry, how he laid the cultural ground work for future musical comedy acts, the depth of respect and research he puts into each genre he parodies, the origin story of Weird Pals, how at its core Yankovic's catalogue is a celebration of all genres of music, the extraordinary art of the Weird Al polka, and how both a Weird Al concert and a Weird Pals show provides a level of musical breadth and diversity you're unlikely to experience elsewhere. For those attending Weird Al Yankovic's show at Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville on Sept 20, Weird Pals will be playing an after party gig across the road at Acme Feed & Seed after the show. We'll see you there!
It's the end of an era. After five years, Father Dave and Deacon Bob gather for the very last episode of They That Hope. True to form, the conversation blends laughter, sorrow, and a steady focus on Christ. The guys begin with one last round of sports heartbreak (Notre Dame, Broncos, and a Buccaneers game that hasn't quite happened yet), plus Deacon Bob's double-dose weekend of Weird Al concerts. Then they shift to reflect on the tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk. They wrestle with grief and division, recognizing how fragile life feels, and wonder aloud how silencing faith-filled voices only deepens the darkness. Their reflection reminds listeners that vengeance belongs to the Lord, and that true hope is found in forgiveness, mercy, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Finally, they wrap up by sharing heartfelt listener letters, favorite memories from the past five years, and their gratitude for everyone who joined them at the “podcast table.” As they sign off with blessings and thanksgiving, Father Dave and Deacon Bob leave us with the reminder that hope does not disappoint—because the love of God has been poured into our hearts. Highlighted Sections (00:00) A Final Episode Begins Father Dave and Deacon Bob kick off their last recording with gratitude and laughter. The bittersweet tone is lightened by jokes about Notre Dame football and whether ending the podcast jinxed their favorite teams. It's a familiar start for a farewell filled with humor and heartfelt reflection. (03:47) Weird Al, Walk-On Songs, and Family Fun Deacon Bob shares his weekend of back-to-back Weird Al concerts, complete with Stormtroopers, “Amish Paradise,” and plenty of costume changes. The story turns tender as he recalls memories of singing parodies with his kids, now grown. Father Dave teases along the way, but it's clear these goofy songs carry a deep family legacy. (12:39) Grief and Division After Charlie Kirk's Shooting They then turn to recent news: the shooting of Charlie Kirk. They talk about his willingness to engage in dialogue, how violence eats away at our sense of safety and unity, and how we sometimes silence or dismiss voices that carry hope for fear of disagreement. Despite the pain this brings, they look for grounding in Scripture—especially the call to love even our enemies as part of the Christian witness. (22:08) Forgiveness, Mercy, and Real Hope Building on the previous reflection, Father Dave and Deacon Bob draw from Deacon Bob's homily and the testimony of Immaculée Ilibagiza to explore what it means to respond in a Christ-like way. In times when the world feels fractured, mercy and forgiveness become the clearest sign of that hope we proclaim. (35:44) Listener Letters, Thank-Yous, and Final Blessing Fans write in to share how the podcast shaped their faith, lightened their burdens, and even sparked personal transformation. Father Dave and Deacon Bob laugh through memories, thank their families and the Franciscan University team, and offer one last blessing. They end as they began five years ago—reminding us that hope does not disappoint, because God is faithful. This week, Features contributor Liz Mason speaks with Mike Odd, manager of Drive Thru Metal group Mac Sabbath, based in Los Angeles but born from the bowels of Outer Space. They discuss the honor of playing the Weird Al stage at this year's upcoming Riot Fest, transcending the "parody band" label, how drive thru metal is intended to keep you away from the drive thru, and their serious merch game. "So if you think that you're experiencing it by watching a video on YouTube or something, I got to tell you that every single person that I've ever talked to that's seen it for the first time, whether it be an agent or a club owner or a fan, they've all said, 'oh, I thought I knew what it was, but I had no idea it was going to be like this.'" - Mike Odd on Mac Sabbath's theatrical live performances Mac Sabbath will be playing the Weird Al stage at Riot Fest on Friday, September 19th, and Reggie's on Thursday, September 18th. From dogs illegally registering to vote, to cobras escaping bath tubs in South Dakota, to a cruise ship gambler who thought diving into the ocean was a solid financial plan—the Rizz Show proves the world is stranger (and dumber) than fiction. The crew also breaks down Weird Al bucket lists, deli slicer betrayals, psychedelic hiking fails, and what happens when Rizz tries to cosplay as a "Cops" fugitive to scare his neighbors. Sprinkle in Madonna signing the Deftones 30 years ago, McDonald's salads as government secrets, and a sports fan ranking that puts Missouri on par with Wyoming (ouch)… and you've got the kind of Bolivian Marching Powder Quadratic Equation chaos only The Rizzuto Show can solve. Lauren & Russ are joined by special guest Noah (you know, “Noah Guy”) to unpack Weird Al's hilarious-style parody “Good Enough for Now.” We dig into what makes this song both romantic and brutally honest, how it flips the country love-ballad trope on its head, and which lines hit you in the feels (or in your ego). Plus: reflections on relationships, comedy songwriting, and whether settling ever really “works.” Don't miss:Noah's take on the difference between sugar-coated love and “above-average” backhanded complimentsWhich line in the song stings the most—and which one ends up being secretly the sweetestA few laughs, some uncomfortable truths, and all the Weird Al admiration you'd expectConnect with Noah & His Work:YouTube: The Jury HouseSpotify: The Jury HouseX / Twitter: @noahmussayBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/beer-d-al-podcast--5439475/support.

Jon Herold and Zak “RedPill78” Paine open the show with weekend stories from Badlanders meetups and Codex 9/11 screenings before turning to their guest Josh, who shares a detailed presentation on Indiana's high-profile crime case. Technical hiccups aside, the episode dives into the newly released Epstein estate documents, including bizarre “birthday book” entries, Trump's alleged sketch, and the DOJ's role in leaks tied to Maureen Comey. The hosts unpack what's real, what's hoax, and how narrative warfare around Epstein is being weaponized against Trump. From there, they shift to the Charlotte train stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee, exposing media spin, leftist DA corruption, and debates over whether the crime was random or racially motivated. The discussion expands to Trump's crackdown on crime, his push to send federal forces into Chicago, ICE's Operation Midway targeting illegal alien gangs, and the political firestorm over lawless cities. Along the way, they touch on Venezuela's election fraud, Greta Thunberg's rumored boat “drone strike,” Politico's fan-fiction on Scott Bessant, and even Amish kids vibing to Weird Al's Amish Paradise. A mix of dark humor, raw analysis, and community banter, this episode captures Baseless Conspiracies at full throttle.
The Rizzuto Show crew shares their weekend adventures, including King Scott's concert adventure and trip to meet his hero Weird Al! We dive into the ups and downs of social interactions, from late-night texts to the peculiarities of neighborly pranks. Plus, we get into some interesting relationships and the latest in pop culture, including a unique new dating trend dubbed, "Date Them 'Til You Hate Them." Lauren and Russ are back with a very special guest—our good friend Robert Yaniz Jr.! This week, we're biting into Weird Al's “Toothless People,” digging into Mick Jagger's “Ruthless People,” AND chewing over the 1986 comedy Ruthless People. That's right: one conversation, three ruthless (and toothless) angles. We cover the music, the movie, and of course, the ridiculous connections only Beer'd Al can make.If you've ever wondered how a Weird Al deep cut, a Mick Jagger soundtrack entry, and a Danny DeVito/Bette Midler classic all intersect—this is the episode for you. Now, all rise for the honorable Judge Reinhold. Spoiler alert: Penn does it anyway… twice! We discuss wheels on your feet, Tony Hawk doppelgängers, and how Gen Z thinks Nine Inch Nails is a literal hardware situation.
