He continued his Graduate education studying Genetics at Westchester University before going on to complete his Podiatric Medical Degree with the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. He completed his surgical residency training under Dr. Gerard Yu at the Foot and Ankle Surgical Residency Training Program, at University Hospitals Health System, in Southwest General Cleveland, Ohio. His journey continued into private practice and a desire to seek additional training experiences internationally. Tune in, as he describes this process and how he took his family with him on this journey through a Multi-Center, European AO Fellowship with multiple leaders in Foot and Ankle Surgery. Come along as he describes the opportunity he had to work in different hospitals in six different cities throughout Germany and Switzerland. He then went onto complete a US based Fellowship program under Dr. Thomas Lee, MD and Dr. Chris Hyer DPM at the Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Center in Columbus Ohio before returning to his practice in Washington.   We also discuss his experiences working in a multitude of leadership positioning throughout the profession including: current President-elect for the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons; Chairman for the Annual Scientific Conference for the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons this year. He is the Past Chairman and a 5-year committee member of the National Education and Scientific Affairs Committee with the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and has been Instrumental faculty in the collaborative effort between the AO Foundation and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons to bring back the basic surgical principal courses offered through the AONA. It is no surprise, with all these accomplishments that he has been inducted into the leadership Hall of Fame with the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.    Join us, as we dive into all things, podiatric medicine and surgery! We examine the impact that mentors can have on our lives and listen as he shares his experiences working with so many remarkable surgeons in the profession, including his touching tribute to Dr. Gerard Yu.   https://www.aofoundation.org/aona/engage-with-us/Become-a-member https://www.acfas.org/membership/joinrenew To find upcoming AO-ACFAS courses:  https://www.aofoundation.org/aona/our-community/DPM/DPM-courses-and-events#sortCriteria=%40startdate%20ascending&f-speciality=DPM https://www.acfas.org/education-professional-development/educationcalendar ACFAS Fellowship website:  https://www.acfas.org/professional-resources/fellowship-resources/list-of-fellowships-with-acfas-status https://www.apmsa.org/ https://bakodx.com/ https://bmef.org/ www.explorepodmed.org https://podiatrist2be.com/ https://higherlearninghub.com/

Mike Kelly is the CTO and Co-Founder of MemberVault, living in Olympia Washington with CEO Wife, 3 kids, and a giant dog.   Here's what we covered on the episode:   The Creation of MemberVault  Mike shares that he started writing code in the 5th grade and has been a developer his whole life - before MemberVault, he was a freelance developer At one point, Mike and his wife Erin started a business where she would design websites, and he would build them, but shared that it was a disaster  Mike took time off to be a stay-at-home dad after having their first child, where he started building MemberVault as a side project that came as a need from one of Erin's clients After getting enough interest in the platform, Mike and Erin created a beta, and it slowly started to gain momentum In 2019, Erin reached a crossroads in her business and joined Mike at MemberVault full-time Mike shares some mistakes he and Erin first made when they started MemberVault Early on, Mike and Erin realized the demand was for more than courses; people wanted to sell digital ebooks, one-on-one service, etc, which made it hard to identify the platform at first Leaning into what they were good at set them apart from other big platforms in the market Mike explains the difficult decisions he and Erin had to make about their business model so they could scale but continue helping individual customers on a personal level MemberVault is rolling out a new tiered system for membership that Mike explains Mike is the only full-time developer but brings in people on contract to help - they also use a company that monitors their servers 24/7 MemberVault has evolved from just selling digital products to having pages, navigation, blogs, comments, file uploads, questions, and so much more because they listen to their users and can implement their ideas quickly As a freelance developer, companies push for the fastest and cheapest option, so Mike felt he couldn't do his best work and take care of the finished product, which bothered him Mike talks about how it is to run a business from home and homeschool their 3 children How To Use MemberVault + Updates MemberVault wants to be your central hub for all your services and products so people can go to one place to find all your offerings 88% of people who enter your MemberVault for a freebie will click around to see what else you offer  In MemberVault, you can see what people are clicking on so you can meet them where they're at and start a conversation instead of having a fixed automated funnel A big thing MemberVault is working on right now is automated sales tax because Mike explains that the tech around it is a nightmare, and the solutions are expensive With MemberVault's tighter integration with Stripe, you'll be able to manage your subscriptions in one place Mike's tips for any platform are having a quality and consistent logo, readable brand colors, quality product images, linking up your socials, and showing your range of offers so people know how they can work with you Check out MemberVault - when you sign up for a free trial, you'll get access to all their resources to help you and an invite to their Facebook community    Links mentioned: MemberVault Website MemberVault on Instagram MemberVault on Facebook   Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. We could not be more excited to be joined this week by Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney! We talk about Portland, including our memorable brunch with Carrie, fantastic dinner with Corin, indie rock tour with Corin's husband Lance Bangs and the current state of the food scene in the country's hippest city. Vanessa also bonds with Carrie over their shared love of "basic" fashions, we discuss record collecting on tour and why ordering clothes online is often disappointing. Finally we dig deep into the iconic '80s Juicy Fruit gum commercials which combined a catchy song, extreme sports and Olympic level athleticism into a deep desire to have some artificially flavored pineapple (or mango?) gum. Finally, we convince Carrie and Corin to play a round of CHANGE.DORK where we debate changing the name of cheesecake to cheese pie, making Harrison Ford the face of Hanukkah and if the legendary American Football house should have its emo legacy updated to include the time that Sleater-Kinney potentially played a half-pipe there a long time ago. Don't forget to check out Sleater-Kinney's brand new album "Little Rope," which comes out on January19th! Barbra Streisand [00:20] "The Christmas Song" Seasons Greetings from Barbra Streisand... and Friends Columbia Special Products CSS 1075 1969 Babs takes things in a particularly saccharine direction, but I suppose not every version can be the Nat King Cole Trio. Rockpile [04:25] "Heart" Seconds of Pleasure Columbia JC 36886 1980 The iconic album from the band that until this point has backed solo efforts from Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds knock it out of the park on their only release as Rockpile. Guitarist Billy Bremnar steps up to take the lead vocals on this snappy number. Pavement [07:00] "Frontwards" The Secret History, Volume 1 (1990-1992) Matador OLE-1064-1 2015 A compilation from a few years ago of early Pavement material. This one is a live version of one of my favorite Pavement songs, performed at Brixton Academy in London on December 14, 1992. Years later Los Campesinos! would win my musical heart with their version of this song (https://youtu.be/DnEa4ES7ep4?si=WeB_oCdOz73gNL0E). The Fresh & Onlys [10:21] "Do You Believe in Destiny" Secrets Walls Sacred Bones Records SBR-056 2011 Always love that big spacey sound Wymond Miles brings with his guitar. Peter Gabriel [14:53] "Shock the Monkey" Security Geffen Records XGHS 2011 1982 If you ask Peter Gabriel what this album is titled, he will likely say "Peter Gabriel", like his previous 3 solo efforts. If you ask Geffen Records what this album is called, they will say "Security". The more you know. The Seeds [20:16] "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" The Seeds GNP Crescendo GNP 2023 1966 A top notch side 1, track 1 from these garage rock progenitors featuring the one and only Sky Saxon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQWVHvjdfZw). The Who [25:13] "Odorono/Tattoo" Sell Out Decca DL 74950 1967 The third studio album from The Who and easily my favorite Who album. (Goodbye)" Sentimental Sing Along with Mitch Columbia CS 8251 1960 Not sure about the last part of that medley, but the first two are solid selections from the titular film. Luna [38:57] "(Walkin' Thru' the) Sleepy City" A Sentimental Education Double Feature Records LP-DBL-0013 2017 A fine collection of covers from one of my favorite bands. This Jagger/Richards number orignally appeared on the Stones compilation album Metamorphosis (https://youtu.be/fRDtVsAvM-8?si=wyGkrescNCIU4vWd). The Parting Gifts also do a great Spector-esque cover (https://youtu.be/P903W_tJNi0?si=Fyw8WEIcJidDI4Ga). Frank Sinatra [42:42] "September Song" September of My Years Reprise Records FS 1014 1965 Frank handles this Weill number pretty well. For my money, the Lou Reed version (https://youtu.be/dHVqWRxpqXk?si=Jop71rSbI5jTlzXF) that appears on the Hal Willner project "September Song: The Music of Kurt Weill". Serana-Maneesh [48:22] "Drain Cosmetics" Serena-Maneesh Playlouderecordings PLAYR 4LP 2006 Another great side one, track one. Some mid-aighties shoegaze goodness out of Norway. Saw them perform an amazing at the Bottom of the Hill on this tour. Kermit the Frog [52:03] "Green" The Sesame Street Record Columbia CR 21530 1970 Sing it,œœ Kermie. Rosanne Cash [54:27] "Seven Year Ache" Seven Year Ache Columbia JC 36965 1981 This song has been stuck in my brain since it was first released, due in large part due to the synth lines courtesy of Booker T Jones. This was a number one album on the country charts for Rosanne, and made it to number 26 on the Billboard 200 that year. _Music behind the DJ: "Make the World Go Away" by Lawrence Welk

Starlight Thursdays Episode 191 f Welcome DJ Reed to the series. How long have you been DJing? I started to pick it up in college in 2015, and started to take it more seriously around 2016/2017, so around 7 years earnestly. Why did you get into it? Got into it as I lived in a party house with two other guys that liked to mess around & were maybe a year into learning how to DJ, they showed me what they knew & pretty soon I was hooked. Around that time i was just getting into festivals & was promoting local raves in Portland, OR. I used to hang out with a crew based out of Olympia Washington that would put on renegade events in the forests in between Olympia & Portland. I got to play for two hours at one of those campout quarry parties & immediately knew it was something I wanted to pursue more. After that I played a lot of house parties/college bars, and kept at it when I moved to Missoula. What events have you played? In Missoula I've played extensively at the Badlander/Monks/VFW along with a handful of opening gigs for touring artists (SkiiTour, Polish Ambassador, etc) & several local electronic showcases at the Top Hat. I've played at boutique festivals (Jammin in the Gulch, Womple Blossom, etc). Beyond that, I've played Missoula staples (Disco Bloodbath, events in Caras park, Socotra after parties) and I put on a handful of outdoor parties every summer in Missoula & surrounding areas with my good friends under the name AlpenGlow Social Club, and have played at quite a few renegade events in OR/WA/MT/CA over the last 7 years (never Forest Creatures). I am very tight with the Royale crew & played a handful of shows for them back in the day as well. Currently I'm working on a new residency at a bar project in Missoula that should open by next year. Where are you from? Missoula Montana! What inspires you? The feeling you get on the dancefloor where everything else falls away & you're just focused on the music and dancing! To me it's very meditative & healing to get down with your friends, and the communities I've met through music festivals/underground parties are some of the kindest friends I know. What genres are in your mix? Disco, Tech House, Bass House, Progressive House. A few words about your mix? This is an exploration of contemporary house music. Who are some of the artists in your mix? Eli Brown, Kyle Watson, Joshwa, Eden Prince, John Summit, Salvatore Ganacci, Renato Cohen, LPZ, etc. Link to your sound cloud or other? https://on.soundcloud.com/hwZzFHXB1a1eGHsf8

Episode 431 – Transformation   Today we have Katy, she is 40, from Olympia, WA and took her last drink on February 12th, 2023.   Join Recovery Elevator this Sunday for a fun conference style meet up at the Marriott in Alpharetta.  This event is all about getting your connect on and it will be a fun time.  Spouses or loved ones are encouraged to attend and you can even stick around afterwards for some silent disco.   Exact Nature: https://exactnature.com/RE20   [02:26] Thoughts from Paul:   One of the best parts of doing the Recovery Elevator podcast is seeing the transformations people make.  Many of the travelers on this year's Costa Rica trip also traveled last year. With every single repeat traveler, Paul could see the growth almost immediately. There are many different reasons for the transformations, but it is always visible in the smile.   Paul wants to make a correction from a previous episode where he said that Goat Yoga was a horrible idea. Incorporating animals in our healing can be a great thing. One reason for this is the nervous systems of animals are much more intact, and with entrainment theory in biology, our nervous systems can heal while being around animals. Also, goats are hilarious. They are all about having fun and if you come near enough to them, they will make you part of the fun.   In the interview with Katy, Paul references a previous episode covering Natlrexone. That is episode 164 if you wish to go back and listen.   Better Help:  www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored   [08:06] Paul introduces Katy:   Katy is 40 years old and took her last drink on February 12, 2023. She is from Olympia WA, married and they have two kids and a dog.  Katy works in elementary education and for fun she likes to hike, read and listen to podcasts.   Katy first started drinking at a young age, but it wasn't until she was in her late teens that she started having consequences like hangovers and blackouts. She went on to a college that had a reputation for being a party school and she fell right into the scene.   Katy feels her twenties were stolen by an abusive relationship where the focus was on a party lifestyle. She had started drinking and driving, getting herself into debt, and struggled to hold down a job. The consequences of her drinking really started to escalate including a DUI that she got during a blackout.   In her thirties, she continued to work in bars and blackout frequently.  When she tried quitting on her own, she had some physical withdrawals and she decided to go to rehab. After around four months she decided to leave and started drinking immediately believing that she would be able to control it.  Before long she was back where she was with her drinking and had a mental health scare that found her seeking help once again.   Her family was very supportive, and Katy was able to make positive changes in her life including having children and getting her master's in education. She was able to stay sober through her pregnancies but would start drinking shortly after.   Katy was prescribed naltrexone which helped her stop drinking and start working on herself. On her doctor's advice she started attending sobriety groups in addition to the medication. She prefers SMART recovery over AA but believes connection is important.   Exercise is important to Katy's sobriety in addition to podcasts and reading. She looks for the good things in day-to-day life as well as in nature which help her feel gratitude. She uses some exercises to help with her anxiety that help her to surround herself in “now”. She enjoys music where she can connect to the lyrics.   Bucket list for Katy is to love her life and feel emotions.   [47:27] In closing, Paul shares another installment of “You Can Be Right, Or You Can Have Peace”.     Cafe RE  Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY to waive the set-up fee. The Making of JAMBOREE by Beat Happening - featuring Calvin Johnson, Heather Lewis, Bret Lunsford, Steve Fisk and Gary Lee Conner

Life of the Record

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 31, 2023 82:37

For the 35th anniversary of Beat Happening's second album, JAMBOREE, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After meeting at the Evergreen State College in Olympia Washington, Calvin Johnson, Heather Lewis and Bret Lunsford formed Beat Happening and began releasing music under Calvin's K label. In 1985, they released their self-titled debut album, which was later was picked up for UK distribution by Rough Trade Records. As the band was gaining interest beyond the Pacific Northwest, expectations were higher for their second album. Right before recording JAMBOREE, they linked up with their tourmates, Screaming Trees, in Ellensburg, Washington and recorded a joint EP in one night. They worked so well together that Beat Happening asked Screaming Trees' Mark Lanegan and Gary Lee Conner to co-produce their next record, along with their friend, Steve Fisk. In this episode, Calvin, Heather and Bret describe where the band was at when they were playing live more than ever before and developing relationships with other bands in the punk scene. Despite their limited technical abilities and lack of equipment, they describe the enthusiasm and optimism they felt about being in a band together at the time they made JAMBOREE. Producer Steve Fisk offers his unique perspective on first meeting a teenage Calvin and going on to record multiple Beat Happening albums. Co-producer Gary Lee Conner describes the unlikely musical pairing of Screaming Trees and Beat Happening but how they were kindred spirits, being outsiders with a shared DIY philosophy. From one borrowed distortion pedal to Screaming Trees as a cheering section to not understanding the concept of singing on key to the bravery of a cappella performances to the difficulty of having only one clave, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
