Jim Minge of "The Omaha Dispatch" and I pester Cake's John McCrea about their new album, the vibraslap, his unique singing style, and bringing their fun sound to Omaha on June 26th as part of the free concert and fireworks show at Memorial Park with Smokey Robinson.
In honor of our conversation with Cake lead singer John McCrea, we dug into the Vintage Voorhees archives for our tribute to the "I was just taking a wide stance" indecent exposure bathroom arrest of then-Senator Larry Craig of Idaho. From June of 2007.

In Episode 80 — the final regular episode of A Journey Through SAW — we heard about "Free To Love Again" by Suzette Charles, which was one of the final singles released during Mike Stock and Pete Waterman's working relationship. Now, 33 years after that track came out in the UK, Suzette's debut album is finally about to be released. Comprising faithfully re-recorded versions of the original six tracks that Suzette previously worked on with Mike at PWL and five brand-new songs, Suzette Charles is the long-awaited resolution to a thread that has been dangling for SAW fans since 1993. In this special episode, Suzette and Mike discuss how they reunited to collaborate musically again and how the album came together, including what it was like to recreate the original songs and the inspiration for the new tunes.Support the showSubscribe for bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/sawInstagram: @chartbeatsauThreads: @chartbeatsau, @matthew_denby360Bluesky: @chartbeatsau, @matthewdenby.bsky.socialFacebook: Chart Beats: A Journey Through PopEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

Hear about the tricky second albums for Rick Astley and Sinitta, and the problematic process of putting Lonnie Gordon's album together. The crew provide a deep-dive review of the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, Michael. The team explores whether this big-budget production successfully captures the King of Pop's legacy or if it remains in the shadow of the 1992 miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream. The discussion covers everything from Jafar Jackson's uncanny performance to the casting choices for Joe Jackson, including a candid critique of the film's prosthetic work. Beyond the technicalities of the film, they analyze the historical accuracies of the timeline, the notable absence of siblings like Janet and Randy, and the missed opportunities to showcase the creative genius behind Off the Wall and Thriller. The conversation also touches on music history milestones, such as the true story of the first Black artist on MTV and the impact of the Pepsi commercial era. Finally, the episode addresses the heated debate surrounding the 90s R&B bracket as the hosts respond to listener voicemails questioning if New Edition really deserved to win over heavyweights like Jodeci and Boyz II Men. 0:00 – Weathering the Storm: A St. Louis Welcome 1:20 – Michael vs. The American Dream: Why the "Bible" Still Wins 4:01 – Missed Opportunities: The Making of Thriller and Off the Wall 7:28 – Casting Critique: Jafar Jackson vs. Colman Domingo's Nose 9:50 – Family Politics: The Missing Jacksons and Jermaine's Influence 15:25 – Motown Truths: Gladys Knight vs. Diana Ross 20:55 – MTV History: The First Black Artist Reveal 23:02 – The Pepsi Commercial and CGI Bubbles 32:16 – "Scraping the Bone": Have We Learned Everything About MJ? 49:09 – The Transformation: From Thriller to Bad 1:04:55 – Final Ratings: Was It Just a Love Letter for the 2000s Kids? 1:12:57 – Listener Voicemail: The Great 90s R&B Group Bracket Debate BRAND New Voicemail 314-649-3113 Join the I Only Listen to 90s Music Facebook Group http://bit.ly/3k0UEDe Follow I Only Listen to 90s Music on IG https://bit.ly/3sbCphv Follow SOLC Network online Instagram: https://bit.ly/39VL542 Twitter: https://bit.ly/39aL395 Facebook: https://bit.ly/3sQn7je To Listen to the podcast Podbean https://bit.ly/3t7SDJH YouTube http://bit.ly/3ouZqJU Spotify http://spoti.fi/3pwZZnJ Apple http://apple.co/39rwjD1 IHeartRadio http://ihr.fm/2L0A2y
I have a confession: I spent most of the 90s singing along to songs without having any idea what they were actually about. So this week on Laugh Lines, we go down a full nostalgia rabbit hole: CD booklets, radio station shoutouts, and the absolute shock of realizing some of our favorite 90s “bops” were not exactly PG. (How did we miss that?!)We take some calls from the Laugh Line. I share more about my ADHD diagnosis and how it's shifted the way I understand my brain and my emotions. And then (because we are who we are) we head to space. Penn and Sam bring their “Space Cadet” dreams to life with a mini episode all about the Artemis mission, the humanity of astronauts, and why looking back at Earth from the moon might be exactly the perspective we all need right now.Basically… it's a journey. And we're really glad you're on it with us. We love to hear from you! Leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. This week on Revinyl, Shawn wastes no time putting Craig on the hot seat with a round of Either/Or, forcing him to choose between dream reunion tours—like seeing The Smiths or R.E.M. if they toured today. Tough calls and strong opinions kick off the episode.Shawn then rolls into his Over/Under segment, this time entirely themed around Eagles, sparking debate over catalog highlights, legacy, and cultural impact.Craig follows with a look at his latest Shazam discoveries, which were particularly cover-heavy this time out—proving once again how reinterpretations can sometimes hit just as hard (or harder) than the originals. They cap things off with 10 more random selections from Uncut's Top Albums of the 1990s, narrowing the long-running list down to just 10 final albums, which they'll dive into next episode.

Would you travel to an artist's hometown to see them perform at their own personal venue? Kelly & Sharon dig into why Ed Sheeran might be taking this bold step and why artists like Justin Bieber could benefit from the same idea. They also explore how Ed seems to be following the lead of Garth Brooks and Sade, choosing to prioritize family life alongside massive success. Kelly shares insights from her recent interview with global superstar Jessie Reyez, including what it truly takes for artists to stay connected with fans on tour and how emotionally draining that level of presence can be. Sharon also reveals what it was like to see Metallica in concert and why everyone, including Kelly, should experience this legendary rock band live at least once. There's fresh tour news from Alanis Morissette and the Backstreet Boys, plus a confession from Sharon about missing out on the recent Oasis world tour. Kelly & Sharon also shine a spotlight on rising Canadian artist Jamie Fine and break down the surprising story behind how “Die With A Smile” by Bruno Mars & Lady Gaga almost didn't come together.

Send us a textThe Barn and Midwest Mixtape Podcast are proud to welcome Fergal Lawler, drummer of the iconic Irish band The Cranberries, for a special conversation celebrating the 30th Anniversary Editions of their breakthrough album, No Need to Argue. The reissue arrives in stunning fashion with a limited three-LP vinyl set featuring remixes by Iain Cook of CHVRCHES, rare live recordings, a demo of “Zombie,” and the band's unforgettable MTV: Unplugged performance. Fans have long awaited the official release of the group's legendary 1995 Unplugged set, and that wait is finally over: beginning November 7, 2025, MTV Unplugged will be available for the first time as a standalone release on vinyl, CD, and digital via Island Records/UMe. A special colored vinyl edition with alternate cover art will also be available exclusively through Complex.Originally taped on February 14, 1995 at the Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, the intimate nine-song performance aired two months later during the sixth season of MTV Unplugged. Following the release of their worldwide smash No Need to Argue, the setlist showcased the band's blend of vulnerability and power with songs like “Dreaming My Dreams,” “Ode To My Family,” “Empty,” “Zombie,” and the title track. They also revisited earlier hits like “Linger” and previewed unreleased gems “Free to Decide” and “I'm Still Remembering,” which would later appear on 1996's To The Faithful Departed.Perhaps most special is “Yesterday's Gone”, a song written by Dolores O'Riordan and Noel Hogan just one day before the show and performed only during that recording. “The only time we ever played it was for MTV,” Hogan recalls.Fergal reflected on the honor of joining the legendary Unplugged series, which previously hosted R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and The Cure:“It was a really chilled, relaxed vibe with the audience sitting on the floor. To be following in the footsteps of those artists was incredible.”Backed by Electra Strings, the quartet that had also joined them on Later with Jools Holland, The Cranberries delivered a performance critics and fans alike have deemed one of the finest in the history of the series. Publications like SPIN and Mixdown have ranked it among the best Unplugged sessions ever, while fans have clamored for its release for decades. With the anniversary reissues of No Need to Argue and the long-awaited arrival of MTV Unplugged as a standalone release, 2025 promises to be a landmark year for The Cranberries' legacy.“I'm really proud that the songs we wrote didn't need all the bells and whistles you get in the studio to sound good,” Noel shared. “They worked just as well stripped down and played acousticallwww.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. All these kids wanna do via modems and computers is to have fun....until they discover a criminal conspiracy with plans to use a computer virus which eventually result in an ecological disaster. Directed by Iain Softely (Backbeat, K-Pax, The Skeleton Key), this techno-fueled romp eventually became a cult classic powered by its danceable soundtrack (Massive Attack, Prodigy, Orbital) and its cast of up-and-comers including Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford, Laurence Mason, and Matthew Lillard. In this recent interview on The Ash Said It Show, rising R&B artist Bria Cheri offered a deep dive into the creative process and powerful message behind her latest single, "Boy Toy." The conversation captivated listeners as Bria explained the song's bold title and its relevance to contemporary relationships. Challenging Norms with a Provocative Title Bria Cheri revealed that the title "Boy Toy" was a deliberate choice, designed to be provocative and challenge traditional gender roles within relationships. She shared that the song's narrative is a powerful blend of personal experience and broader observations, serving as an anthem for reclaiming power and agency. The song redefines the "boy toy" label, transforming it from a term of subservience into a symbol of strength and self-possession. Musicality and Emotional Authenticity Beyond the lyrics, Bria discussed the meticulous crafting of the song's musicality. She highlighted how the instrumentation was carefully chosen to evoke a sense of confidence and empowerment, complementing the single's powerful message. The interview also touched on the vulnerability required to write such authentic lyrics, a challenge Bria embraced to ensure her storytelling remained raw and genuine. What's Next for Bria Cheri Concluding the interview, Bria Cheri hinted that "Boy Toy" is just a glimpse of a larger, upcoming project. Fans can anticipate more music that delves into complex relationship themes, all delivered with her signature blend of soulful R&B and raw emotional honesty. This interview provides a look into Bria Cheri's artistry, cementing her as an artist who uses her music to spark important conversations about modern love, empowerment, and authenticity. Web: https://www.briacheri.com/ Bio: Bria Cheri is a graduate from Long Island University Post with a degree in Broadcast Journalism/Public Relations. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is a singer-songwriter, aspiring actress, dancer, and pianist from Jamaica Queens, NY, who currently resides in Long Island, NY. Bria has spent over a decade perfecting her craft in music professionally for over ten years. As time progressed, she explored acting in a few independent films as an extra and managed/hosted her own radio show FLAVA at Long Island University. After graduation, Bria Cheri volunteered her time online with several radio stations such as KFSM radio, FreedomKRadio, WRDR radio, Rebel 107.9 and Radiomga.com to support independent artists. She wanted to help promote their music on the networks and interview them to inform a broader audience about their talent. Music has always been a part of Bria Cheri's heart & soul. Her musical influences range from rock, jazz, house music and hip-hop. So, no matter what genre of music the artist had, she always welcomed them to her show in addition to recommending them to the affiliated stations. Today, Bria has been very tenacious with her career. When she is not performing, she will either write music on her own based on some elements of her experiences, observations, or collaborate with songwriters. Very often she will play the keyboard to create a beat to stimulate her song writing ideas. When she needs additional creative ideas, Bria Cheri notifies her mentor Donnie Klang or songwriter Kyle Davidson. Donnie Klang who is a singer, songwriter, and producer was formerly signed to Bad Boy Records after winning MTV's reality show, “Making the Band 4.” Donnie owns and operates his recording studio with business partner Matthew LaPorter, known as The Loft Sound Studio, LLC in Syosset, NY. He has produced Bria's debut EP titled, "Before the Music" as well as her second EP, “Silent Siren Vol 1, inclusive of other projects. Bria Cheri released her third EP, titled “Phoenix” in 2023, which was produced by Raphael Gibbs from Become Elite Media, LLC. The project encapsulates her growth as an artist and as a woman. This project inspired her to release another video on YouTube, “Don't Worry.' As of April 2023, Bria Cheri's musical journey enabled her the honor of meeting and opening for the legendary Styles P from the Hip-Hop group, The Lox, at Bullet Proof Studios in New Jersey. In 2024, Bria Cheri performed at the “So Fly So Fabulous Fashion Show” in New York City and was interviewed by Sway at SiriusXM on the Sway In The Morning radio show. The So Fly So Fabulous event was the first performance at a fashion show, but the energy from the audience, featuring artists and the DJ made it worthwhile in combination with the phenomenal and unique fashion designs by Sara Louis. Bria Cheri's interview with Sway expressed who she is as an artist and was very appreciative for the opportunity to showcase her talent to a national audience. The interview can be found on YouTube entitled, “Sway's Universe” at https://youtu.be/rKVkfZgWgVw. Currently, a new song “Boy Toy” produced by Donnie Klang with songwriting collaborator Kyle Davidson will be released on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. The song delves into playful roles in dating. It is an upbeat song you can dance to. More music can be found at https://briacheri.bandcamp.com. I'm very excited to present the very first episode of my new podcast/YouTube channel/online content thing, 120 MONTHS. This is a project that I've been wanting to do for a very long time. Along with my good friend John Lombardo, I'm listening to all the major music releases of the 1990s, IN ORDER, month by precious nostalgic month, from January 1990 to December 1999. I know, it's A LOT. But what else is there for us anymore, beyond the endless pleasures and pain of retreating into the past? A bit about John: I first met him in 1995, when I was a nerdy high school kid and he was an extremely cool local celebrity. As the lead singer of an alternative rock band that toured with bands like Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and many more, John was tapped into scenes that I could only imagine. He has a ton of crazy stories, and a lot to say about how music evolved during the era. I'm very much looking forward to sharing the conversations we're having on the show. We're creating Spotify playlists so you can listen along to all the music we're tracking on the show, and we've got a Substack page where you can find all of our 90s music content along with extra goodies for paid subscribers. I would love if you'd follow us there. If you like Nostalgia Trap, I think you'll dig 120 MONTHS. I'll be sending out some special discount stuff for our Substack to anyone who follows/subscribes to the Trap Patreon, so keep an eye on your inbox. And below there are some links to find the whole 120 MONTHS universe. And don't worry: Nostalgia Trap isn't going anywhere. This is just a new space to talk in detail about a weird, wonderful moment in the history of American music. I hope you'll join us! This week's episode is a TARP REPLAY. Andrew re-shares his conversation with Grammy-nominated recording artist & songwriter Miles Zuniga. In 1994, Miles started the band Fastball with Tony Scalzo & Joey Shuffield. Fastball's smash hit “The Way” was released in 1998 and ultimately became one of the most popular songs of the year. In this conversation, Miles shares a behind-the-scenes look at his journey — and some absolutely incredible stories. You'll hear powerful ideas on finding inspiration in new places, changing your trajectory with just 30 days of focused energy, & so much more. The wisdom Miles shares applies far beyond music. Chris Margolin is a singer, songwriter, educator, father, and husband from the Pacific Northwest. The man is an inspiration. Middle school teacher by day, rock n' roller by night- Chris has been educating the youth of America for over twenty years and moving crowds by night for thirty. Despite a demanding day job, and the responsibilities of having a family, he maintains a prolific recording schedule that includes his latest wonderful offering David St., which finds Margolin and his band the Contraband collaborating to touch on country, grunge, 90s pop, and so much more goodness! This was a long time in the making. Chris and I had not met until this moment but it feels we have known each other for years as we have long interacted on Twitter. It was one of those episodes that felt like hangs with an old friend and it is my pleasure to bring you, my conversation with Chris Margolin. Buckle up for a wild ride as Opie, Matt, and comedian Ron the Waiter take over Gebhards for a no-holds-barred LIVE episode! Ron spills the beans on his bonkers childhood—think evil stepmoms, falling through ceilings, and a lesbian mom who stumbles into him on a Boston street. The crew veers from clam chowder debates to Post Malone channeling Kurt Cobain, with pit stops at misheard Chili Peppers lyrics and a bionic hip reveal. It’s a hilarious, unscripted trainwreck of trauma, tunes, and tangents—plus Matt’s brunch gets a shoutout, and Ron’s still yelling about Fran Drescher. Hit play and join the madness!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
