The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that overallemployment for Sports Psychologists is projected to grow by 7% from 2023 to2033, which is faster than the average for all occupations. On average, about13,000 job openings for psychologists are expected each year over the nextdecade. Many of these openings will stem from the need to replace workers whoare transferring to different occupations or exiting the labor force, such asthrough retirement. Sports psychologist Scott Goldman, PhD, consultingperformance psychologist for the Golden State Warriors,  highlights that while elite athletes arevaluable performers, they are also human beings like anyone else. “I see myrole as a psychologist within a sports organization as being an embedded360-degree resource,” he explains, serving athletes, coaches, and front officemanagers who are responsible for talent evaluation and staff onboarding. Goldman was one of the first clinically trainedpsychologists to become an integral part of both college and professionalsports organizations. His early full-time positions at the NCAA level includedroles at the University of Arizona and the University of Michigan. He has alsoworked with professional teams such as the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions, and has consulted for the Washington Wizards and Chicago Cubs. One of Goldman'skey achievements is the development of the Athletic Intelligence Quotient (AIQ)assessment tool, which measures the performance-specific cognitive traits thatcontribute to athletic success. He collaborated with James Bowman, PsyD, fromthe Albert Ellis Institute in New York City, on the AIQ for 15 years before itwas published in 2012. The test, described in a 2020 article in the New YorkTimes Magazine as “a comprehensive user's manual to an elite athlete's brain,”is utilized by the NCAA and various professional sports teams, as well asinternational clubs and first responder departments. Goldman's team defines intelligence as “the ability toacquire, process, and apply information.” Drawing from the Cattell-Horn-Carrolltheory of intelligence, Goldman and Bowman sought to define the cognitiveabilities that are most relevant in navigating the complex challenges ofsports: “We viewed sport as a constantly mutating puzzle and asked ourselves,‘What cognitive abilities are most impactful in solving that?'” Goldmanrecalls. Over the past decade, awareness of the importance ofprotecting athletes' mental health has significantly increased. Goldmancontributed to the 2013 National Athletic Trainers Association's consensusstatement on addressing psychological concerns among college athletes and waspart of the mental health task force that established "bestpractices" for the NCAA in 2016. In 2019, both the NBA and NFL beganrequiring teams to provide regular access to behavioral health clinicians attheir facilities, leading many NFL teams to hire psychologists for thispurpose. Goldman joined me this week to share more insights on these importantdevelopments. For more information: https://aiq.team/  Email: sgoldman@aiq.team LinkedIn: @ScottGoldmanPh.D

In honor of Men's Health Month, we chat with Mr. FitzgeraldWilliams and Dr. Ernest Peets Jr. of MASC BDA about men's mental health. Join us for insights, strategies, and breaking the stigma. Mr. Fitzgerald Williams, Founder/Therapist of MASC BDA  Meet Mr. Fitzgerald Williams, a man who, just like anyone else (even those who might not readily admit it), has faced life's unexpected challenges. There have been times when he sought counseling, especially during the toughest moments, like coping with the loss of his best friend. His journey is a testament to the effectiveness of counseling for men when done right.  Mr. Williams is no stranger to the intricacies of male-oriented psychotherapy. He understands that without the right approach, counseling for men can feel uncomfortable, frustrating, and ultimately ineffective. Mr. Williams earned his Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He's also certified in Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy from The Albert Ellis Institute. With nearly 15 years of exclusive experience in counseling men, he employs a "person-centered" approach that emphasizes thought processes and enhances awareness of thinking patterns to foster better behavioral outcomes.  Dr. Ernest Peets Jr., Founder/Therapist of MASC BDA  Dr. Ernest Peets Jr. brings a wealth of expertise to the table as a Certified Family Therapist and International Certified Alcohol and Drug Counsellor. He's also a founding member of MASC Ltd. Dr. Peets Jr. has held pivotal roles, including Clinical Manager at Turning Point, Family Therapist at Child & Adolescent Services, and Drug Treatment Coordinator for Bermuda Drug Treatment Court.  A proud Bermudian, Dr. Peets Jr. embarked on his academic journey at Howard University in Washington D.C., earning a B.A. in Business in 1993. His pursuit of knowledge continued with a Master's in Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1999. — When we are emotionally balanced, our lives have more of a flow and become less of a struggle. As we reduce unhealthy negative emotions, and increase the presence of healthy emotions, mindfulness and awareness become more accessible. When our minds are at ease, our problem solving skills improve and we are better equipped moving towards our goals and aspirations, resulting in happier and more meaningful lives. The seeming impossible becomes possible. There is a shift within our energetic selves, which shift in itself may promote feelings of joy and fulfillment within, and in our lives. Valeria Teles interviews Anette Eriksson  — she is a clinical therapist in private practice based in New York City where she provides therapy and coaching to her clients. Anette has a particular interest in helping her clients achieve emotional balance and uses Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), a form of CBT, in her practice. REBT is a solution-focused approach and has its roots in ancient Greek, Roman, and Eastern philosophy, with a particular influence of Stoicism. The philosophical component is brought into the cognitive challenging of clients' irrational (unrealistic and unhelpful) thoughts and beliefs, which beliefs tend to create neurosis and dysfunction. The premise of REBT is that our thoughts and beliefs have a lot to do with how we feel and behave. This theory was argued by the Greek Stoic philosopher, Epictetus, who notably said, “People are not disturbed by things, but the view they take on them.” Anette has a master's degree in clinical social work from Fordham University, and post-graduate training in REBT from the Albert Ellis Institute. In addition to her therapeutic education, Anette has an extensive background and training in philosophy and mindfulness. To learn more about Anette Eriksson and her work, please visit: anetteerikssontherapy.com   — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. The inspiration is Love. The aspiration is to awaken new ways of thinking that can lead us to a new way of being, being well.

Infidelity looks a lot more complicated in the cyber world. Dr. Peter Kanaris joins me to unravel what constitutes cyber infidelity, the recovery approaches involved, and ways to rebuild trust. Relationships in the Digital Age Dr. Kanaris views the digital age as a “relationship accelerator” wherein the connections are made just as fast as they are broken. The digital age expedites and exposes every part of life that would otherwise be revealed slowly. What is cyber infidelity? Dr. Kanaris says that all infidelity in today's age is cyber infidelity, as contact through technology is inevitable in the relationship in today's age. Infidelity looks different in the 21st century than it did before. He calls it AAAP – Accessibility, Affordability, Anonymity, Portability. Technology has made it easier to seek infidelity without actively looking for it. I and i-infidelity Capital I-infidelity is violating agreements partners have about what they find acceptable to do or watch, such as electronic or face-to-face involvement, porn, sex, involvement of feelings, etc. Lower case i-infidelity is when involvement with technology takes over your priorities and responsibilities towards your partner but not necessarily anything sexual. Dr. Kanaris advises partners to have an honest conversation about what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in the relationship. I-Infidelity and sex addiction Sex addictions are not scientifically accepted in the professional world as they are popular in the media. Instead, Dr. Kanaris works with the model of ‘out of control sexual behaviors' to help someone be in charge of their sexual wellness. However, for someone who chooses to cheat, he suggests a psychological approach to determine the underlying cause. What to do once you see the red flags? When you see red flags like catching your partner watching porn or sexting somebody else, Dr. Kanaris suggests having an open yet non-accusatory conversation about boundaries and what you're uncomfortable with. If you're still met with defensive behavior, it's time to look further. Recovery and rebuilding trust The first step is to understand that technology poses challenges. Then address any out-of-control behaviors if there are any. The partners should then ‘collaborate and cooperate' to manage technology in their relationships. When the conflict arises, Dr. Kanaris suggests employing externalization of the problem rather than looking at the problem from within the person. To rebuild trust, instead of going back to the blind faith model, Dr. Kanaris talks about an evidence-based model. Here, the partner who broke the trust takes initiative to be transparent and reassuring even if it costs them their privacy for the time being. Tune in to find out what more ways there are on the path to recovery. Biography Dr. Peter Kanaris holds a doctorate in Clinical and School Psychology from Hofstra University. He is an N.Y.S. licensed psychologist and the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists certifies him as a Diplomate of Sex Therapy. In this week's episode I welcome back Dr Scott Goldman. I asked Scott back on the show to speak about the Athletic Intelligence Quotient (AIQ) which he created together with Dr Jim Bowman when they both received training at the Albert Ellis Institute in New York. The AIQ is an intelligence test that assesses the innate cognitive abilities that are most utilised in attaining, developing, and applying athletic skills, strategies, and tactics. The AIQ has over 6000 professional elite athletes in its database covering all 5 major leagues in the US as well as Olympic training facilities and an English Premier League team. We take an in depth look into the AIQ, how it works and what the outcomes mean for individuals and teams.

Is it possible that you have everything it takes to achieve what you yearn for and what, I believe, is already rightfully yours? Maybe the reason why you have not achieved the level of success you want and deserve is because of the limitations you place on yourself. I know that was the case for me up until three years ago. How could I go from having a thriving yet (very) small private practice to helping thousands? To help the masses refine their clarity and gain the mindset required to reach their potential, to arrive at their Olympics? Who would listen to me and find value in what I had to say at Fortune 500 companies in San Francisco, Silicon Valley and globally? I consider myself as a relatively smart person, but that was sure stupid thinking. Companies like Google Ventures, Autodesk, CapitalOne, Bank of America, and VMware (to name a few) have listened the last couple of years. Up next, a national podcast tour for my upcoming book, "ZONED IN: The Mental Toughness Required for a World-Class YOU" and major speaking engagements in 2019. It’s to share with you because, as I started believing in myself three years ago, I believe in you. I care so deeply about your success, and your joy. Also, I will not allow stupid thinking to get in the way of your next big win. Here are a couple possible results when smart people think stupid and how you can avoid this trap: Example #1 Not so productive: I failed at ___________, so I must be bad at ______________. Much better: I failed at ___________, so I must have had a poor performance that day. Example #2 Not so productive: I have never achieved this _____________, so I maybe I never will. Much better: I have never achieved this _____________, but I believe in my ability to improve. Let’s take a look into the science behind the consequences of stupid thinking. Dr. Albert Ellis is considered one of the most influential characters in the history of psychology (for more information on Dr. Ellis, have a look at the Albert Ellis Institute, http://albertellis.org). His life’s work was centered around curing depressive disorders, but we can learn an important lesson about not just going from sick to well, but how to go from good to great. Ellis proved that when we stop thinking wrong (i.e.: in a highly negative and propagandistic way) and start thinking right (i.e.: in a more encouraging and optimistic way), we can be cured of many types of depression. I am not qualified, nor do I diagnose or treat depression, but in the context of performance, imagine what we can accomplish if we started raising our ambitions ... and if we started thinking about what’s possible rather than the obstacles in our way or our past failures? Maybe we’ll "cure" failure or quitting and discover a remedy for our biggest success yet.
