You can find Nickolas Butler at https://nickolasbutler.com/ or on IG @wiscobutler Amy discovered Nickolas Butler earlier this year when she attended the author event for his newest novel A Forty Year Kiss at Carmichael's Bookstore. Nick has six novels and a collection of short stories under his belt, but A Forty Year Kiss may be his first love story. His mind was set to wondering after he overheard a passionate conversation in his favorite local bar between two older people, a conversation that made him blush just a little. He began playing with the idea of what this couple's back story was. Nick's book asks readers to consider the difference between first love and love between mature adults, how life's baggage affects personal relationships, and whether people can really change. Nick also talks to us about his rural Wisconsin roots, why he read Babysitter Club books in his childhood, and the debate on whether he should wear a cape. For our book recommendation section of this episode, we decided to find some of our favorite books we've read as a result of being in a book club together for two decades. For the most part, our book club chooses novels, but there is one memoir in the lot, as well as contemporary fiction, historical fiction, sci-fi, and a classic. Books Discussed in this Episode: 1- A Forty Year Kiss by Nickolas Butler 2- Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler 3- A Paris Year by Janice MacLeod 4- Godspeed by Nickolas Butler 5- Love, Hope & Carnage by Nick Cave and Sean O'Hagan 6- The Fertile Earth and the Ordered Cosmos edited by M. This week we chat with Kelsey Madges, an Ohio middle school librarian and book lover. We talk about the highs and the lows of working in school libraries. For me some of the most satisfying episodes we do are when we talk to book lovers from other countries. What is it like to be a book lover from far-reaching places around the world? In the past we have talked to readers and writers from Ireland, Somalia, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. This week, we are headed to Croatia to speak with Ivana Murk who gives us a window into her life as a child growing up, learning to read both the Cyrillic alphabet which Slavic languages are based on and the Latin alphabet. She learned English in school starting in 3rd grade and now she now reads books in both Croatian and English. We talk with her about Croatian authors who you might want to find translations for if possible, why the skill of a book translator is so important, and what authors you have probably heard of who are particularly popular in her country. We feel it would be helpful to give you just a brief little summary of Croatian history in the last 50 years that is most relevant to this episode. Croatia was a part of the former Yugoslavia, which also included Serbia, Bosnia, Hercegovina, Slovenia, Macedonia, and Montenegro. In 1991, Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia. This did not happen peacefully. This was followed by the Bosnia War from 1992-1995 which pitted Croatians, Bosnians, and Serbians against each other and has been called the bloodiest event in Europe since World War II. Geographically, Croatia is very close to Italy to the West by way of the Adriatric Sea, Austria and Hungary to the north, and Bosnia to the West. 2020 has been one for the books, hasn't it. See my pun there? A worldwide pandemic, a truly historic election, racial unrest, murder hornets, shortages of toilet paper, and massive fires in California are just a few weird things that happened this year; we all took solace where we could. For book lovers like us, it usually meant a book but could also include new hobbies like puzzles and baking for me, crocheting for Carrie, and wine for the both of us. For this last episode of 2020, Carrie and I decided to talk about some notable books that we didn't have a chance to talk about during the year and also take a look forward to 2021 to some books we are anxious to read. Technology has really been messing with us at the end of 2020. Several pieces we recorded didn't work, or disappeared, or just plain sucked. Anything that could go wrong did. So we had to get creative with this episode. And like many things about 2020, that creativity to do something different sometimes makes something better. I hope in this case this episode is better than the one we started with before the gremlins inside our computer got a hold of it. We will be taking a few weeks off. While we are gone, we will re-play some older episodes that we think deserve another listen. Then we will be back January 13 with all new episodes with cool interesting people who are book lovers too. “In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” These words, from Mr. Darcy in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice are, perhap, some of the reasons why many readers swoon over his character and develop a love for Austen and her works. Other readers, though, like our guest this week, Amanda Beverly, see their families or people they know in the quirky individuals who make up Austen’s communities. Whatever your reason for liking Austen’s world, there is a way you can immerse yourself in it, which is through The Jane Austen Festival, an annual event that, due to COVID, is virtual this year. Running from July10-12, the festival includes a variety of workshops, author talks, and Q&A that helps attendees get a taste of what the Regency Period and Austen are like. In our episode this week, Amanda talks about how she became involved with the Jane Austen Society of North America--Greater Louisville Region and what their meetings are like, how it seems the things she can learn about Jane Austen’s books and her time period are endless, and why newbies shouldn’t feel intimidated, and why the Louisville chapter of the society is known as the Fashion region. Kaytee and Meredith have lots to share with you today, Bookworms! We hope you love this episode! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host: a bookish realization, and a crafty bookish gift. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve got some romance and some thriller and some non-fiction and some middle grade. Our reading lives are all over the place! Yesterday we talked about We Came Here to Forget by Andrea Dunlop and today we’re so happy to have her with us for a special bonus episode where we talk about the book! We talk to her about her writing process and how she developed the plot line for the book (which is somehow both thrilling with a happy redemption story). We loved this book, and we learned more about Andrea’s personal experiences that led to writing this. She set out to debunk myths about the issue and what pop culture is getting right and wrong about Munchausen’s by proxy. Andrea is a pantser (not a plotter) when it comes to writing, and she reveals her process, the importance of resilience in the industry, and how she gives back to the community through social media. AViD author Laurie Frankel joins special guest host Laura Rowley on the DMPL Podcast. Frankel's most recent novel, This is How it Always Is, is the story of a family raising a transgender child. Frankel herself is the mother of a transgender girl. She and Rowley have a fun and frank discussion on the complexities of parenting, including the difference in keeping your child safe and keeping your child happy. Frankel will be at the Central Library on Thursday, April 18, at 7:00 PM. Doors open at 6:00 PM. For more information, go to dmpl.org/avid.
At the end of the year, lots of people love posting round-ups of their favorite books. I was lazy and didn’t do a round up even though I read lots of good books, but IF I WERE to have done one for 2018, at the tippy top of the list would for sure be a novel titled, This is How it Always Is, by Laurie Frankel. Now, most of the authors I host on this show are non fiction authors, because parenting thought leaders usually write, well, parenting books, so it’s rare that I chat with a fiction writer. But I think this is such a relevant exception because this book is about raising a trans child, a subject that is near and dear to my heart because I have a trans brother, but we haven’t had a chance to explore it yet on the podcast, so I’m grateful for the opportunity to do so. But I’ve also been telling people that the book is not just like a LGBTQ niche fiction, it’s such a poignant read for parents in general, and really for all human beings, sort of exploring these transcendent themes that we all wrestle with. It’s just so well written and gripping and challenging and validating and beautiful all at the same time. I talk with Laurie about her life as a parent raising a trans child herself, and how that intersects with her fictional account. We talk about the characters she has created, as well as all the issues that arise with raising transgender children.
