The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) says it will pursue full prosecution of Daybreak for abandonment, neglect, and unnecessary cruelty of animals. This comes after it the NSPCA culled over 200-thousand chickens at poultry farm operated by Daybreak Foods near Delmas, Mpumalanga. The chickens were severely neglected, left without feed for days, resulting in mass cannibalism. The state owned poultry company is grappling with significant financial constraints that have hindered its operational capabilities. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to NSPCA spokesperson, Jacques Peacock

Harvard is in the news standing up for academic freedom tied to billions of federal dollars withheld for research. But not all science done at Harvard is groundbreaking or even worthwhile. Some of it is just cruel and wasteful. Animal experimenters like Harvard's Margaret Livingstone continue to spend your tax dollars on useless tests that only end up torturing and killing animals. In this reprised episode, Dr. Katherine Roe, a former NIH researcher and now chief scientist for PETA's Laboratory Investigations Department, talks to Emil Guillermo about how researchers like Livingstone build a career on cruelty masquerading as curiosity, including her latest strobe tests with monkeys. Yet Livingstone continues to do her job, even though more than 380 scientists from around the world, including Harvard, have condemned the cruel experiments. For more, go to PETA.org. The shaky underpinnings of horse racing in America were revealed in a recent New York Times article. The headline was stark: "Dead Athletes. Empty Stands. Why are We Paying Billions to Keep This Sport Alive?" Investigative reporter Noah Schactman asked the questions that have needed to be asked for a long time--and reveals why horse racing--at least in New York State didn't die long ago. Two Grass Valley residents were arrested after a routine probation search uncovered 18 dogs of various breeds and ages living in inhumane conditions.
24 dogs were seized from a Connecticut property and a 28-year-old woman is now facing animal cruelty charges. The accusations against Sarah Smolak are pretty horrific, but what I find fascinating is after her arrest this week, it seemed like she had been on the radar for many animal advocacy groups, including Desmond's Army. We spoke with the president of Desmond's Army, Zilla Cannamela. For more information on Desmond's Army: https://www.desmondsarmy.org/ Image Credit: Getty Images

If Meat Is Cruel, So Is Dairy... The Hidden Truth for Vegetarians Many vegetarians adopt their diet out of a desire to reduce animal suffering, driven by a belief that animals should not be killed for food. Ethical vegetarians recognize that animals have a right to live free from harm and exploitation, which makes the decision to avoid meat a natural extension of this belief. However, dairy is often overlooked. Because dairy cows aren't killed for their milk right away, some believe that this makes dairy more acceptable. But when we look deeper, we find that dairy is built on the same exploitation and violence as the meat industry. Listen to today's episode for details. “Empathy must guide us—if we truly feel for our feline friends, declawing wouldn't exist.” Declawing might sound harmless, but what if it's one of the most misunderstood and harmful practices affecting cats today? In this powerful conversation, Stacy LeBaron chats with Dr. Jennifer Conrad, the trailblazing veterinarian behind The Paw Project, an organization on a mission to stop declawing for good. Dr. Conrad unravels the dark history of declawing, explaining why it's less about trimming claws and more about amputating a cat's defenses—both physically and emotionally. With passion, relatability, and a wealth of knowledge, Dr. Conrad takes us into the billion-dollar industry that's kept this cruel practice alive and shares how her team is taking the fight to the legislative level. You'll learn how to spot humane veterinarians, advocate for change, and help your local community embrace more compassionate practices. Alex "AX" FosterTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Alex Foster. AX Foster is a former Senior Assistant State's Attorney for the state of Maryland. He practiced as a prosecutor in that office for twenty years before starting his own firm and becoming a defense attorney. After 15 or so years in that role; AX decided the time was right to write his first legal thriller novel called 'Gavel to Gavel'. In this episode, we chat about his previous career as an actor for 7 years; where he had tons of roles on several different daytime soap operas, and why he decided to switch gears and become a lawyer. Then we get into some of his State's Attorney days. We talk about his prosecuting criminal law where the cases ranged from drugs, gangs, animal cruelty, and even murder. Of course I find out why he decided to change sides and become a defense lawyer. We talk about the differences in the field, as well as some of the hurdles to keeping a law practice going. Finally, AX tells me why he decided to write his first novel; and why Covid was the right time. We discuss the basic premise of the book, and how many books he thinks will be in The Seneca County Courthouse Series. Book 1 of the series (Gavel to Gavel) came out a couple of years ago, and book 2 (Double Blind) is out NOW. If you like John Grisham or James Patterson novels, than you are sure to love The Seneca County Courthouse Series of legal crime thrillers. Follow AX on social media, and check out his website AXFoster.com. Make sure you grab both books in the sale bundle on Amazon.

SciTechDaily's headline reads: Alarming Mutation in H5N1 Virus Raises Pandemic Red Flags. The article goes on to say: "A recent study published in Science and funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has found that a single alteration in a protein on the surface of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus—currently present in U.S. dairy cows—could significantly increase its potential for human-to-human transmission." And, now, the USDA is going be testing cow's milk! NBC News reports: "The mandate targeting bulk milk transporters and dairy processors is meant to help identify herds that have caught the virus, which has spread among livestock." So, what happens when they find Bird Flu? They've already killed millions of exposed chickens by baking them to death in a cruel mass-killing process called Ventilation Shutdown! Are they going to bake the cows to death too? Would it be too crazy to suggest that humans should just stop torturing and killing 92 BILLION ANIMALS for food every year in dangerously cramped industrial factory farming systems? Here to discuss is Free From Harm's Robert Grillo and Amber Canavan, PETA's Vegan Campaigns Project Manager with UnchainedTV host Jane Velez-Mitchell.

Indonesia is the Asian capital of wildlife trafficking, a market estimated at $20 billion according to Interpol. The archipelago is one of the world's biggest reservoirs of biodiversity. Wild animals are already the victims of massive deforestation, but they now face another. On the islands of Java, Sumatra and Borneo, poachers capture wild animals in their natural habitats and sell them at markets in Jakarta or online. While some of the animals remain in Indonesia, most are sent to other countries in Asia. In response, the Indonesian government is tightening laws against wildlife trafficking. Poachers and traffickers currently face a fine of just over 6,000 euros and up to several years in prison. But under the new law, they could face up to 10 years in prison and a 130,000 euro fine. William de Tamaris, Ismutia Rahmi, Justin McCurry report.

This week, we unfortunately have to talk about a story that comes with a content warning. News of NRA CEO Doug Hamlin's involvement in the torture and killing of a cat during college resurfaced on Monday. Hamlin has denied "direct" involvement, but contemporaneous reporting indicates his role was more than ancillary. Cam Edwards of Bearing Arms joins the show to work out what this all means for the already-battered NRA. Cam said the story is gruesome and will make it difficult for Hamlin to effectively reform the organization as he's said he wants to. But he also argued it may not stick to the NRA for longer than Hamlin is around, especially given the lightning-quick nature of the modern news cycle. He also said the animal cruelty story may have had an impact on the group canceling its Georgia event with Donald Trump, but that might also be part of a broader trend of Trump canceling events. Still, he said the scandal is likely to hurt the NRA's efforts to rebound from its previous CEO's, as yet unsettled, corruption scandal. And it's becoming increasingly clear how much that's put them at a disadvantage against the gun-control groups when it comes to political spending. We also discuss Elon Musk's recent pro-gun turn and whether he could become a counter to Michael Bloomberg's funding of gun-control groups. Last week, the Jordan World Circus performed at the Spanish Trail Arena in Moab. The circus has been protested for animal cruelty for years and was banned from using elephants in Salt Lake County in 2020. But last year, Utah passed an amendment that prohibits local governments from banning or restricting any enterprise that uses "working animals," including circuses. Last year, the state also changed its definition of animal cruelty.
