In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Mühlethaler explores the transformative world of Kundalini yoga with accomplished yoga teacher Kia Miller. In addition to Kundalini, Kia also teaches meditation, breathwork, and Vinyasa yoga. In their conversation, Anne and Kia dive right into Kia's meditation, grounding and breathwork practices, before Kia recounts how she has blended her beloved Ashtanga Vinyasa with Kundalini tradition to form the unique Radiant Body Yoga school. With an emphasis on the power of breathwork and energy coherence, Kia shares how she evolved to discover these practices and how they harmonise the energies of heart and mind, ultimately offering a balanced approach to managing the stresses of modern life. Kia's journey reveals the profound impact that yoga can have on building self-trust and presence.Kia opens to Anne about her personal evolution from an athlete that was disconnected from deeper self-awareness to a yoga teacher who embodies authenticity and presence. She discusses how Kundalini yoga ignited a spark within her, leading to a newfound intimacy with herself and a conscious way of living. Kia found inspiration and support through her teachers Guru Singh — whom she calls a wayseer — and Guru Chan. Kia explains how she found a path to connect genuinely with the present moment, shedding her old skin metaphorically, and became the teacher she is today.Kia talks in depth about the spiritual awakening that is facilitated by Kundalini yoga in focusing energy at the pineal gland. Kia likens the pineal body to a radio receiver that, through dynamic movement, breathwork and meditation, can release powerful chemicals, facilitating deeper spiritual experiences. Kia tells Anne how Kundalini kriyas (a specific sequence of physical actions that work toward a particular outcome) help shift awareness from a "me-centric" to a "we-centric" consciousness, enhancing interconnectedness and making infinite potential accessible.Grounding practices are another focal point of the conversation, with Kia emphasising to Anne the importance of breathwork, core kriyas and energetic field practices for maintaining energy and stability. She shares her secret superpower of deep empathy and highlights how food, nature walks, and connection contribute to radiance and happiness. The episode concludes with Anne and Kia making reflections on the essence of happiness found within connection, reinforcing the idea that true happiness lies within.A compelling discussion about self-discovery, finding the source of inner power, and our interconnectedness, with a devoted yogini and accomplished teacher. Laura von Ostrowski is a scholar, and also a yoga teacher. As she explains in her book, there's a fundamental mismatch between the Yoga Sūtra's emphasis on physical transcendence and modern postural practice. Focusing in depth on Ashtanga Vinyasa, she investigates how boundaries get blurred. We discuss the implications for yoga philosophy, as well as its links to contemporary practice and everyday life. If we reinterpret texts to serve different priorities, should we really write new ones?To explore the Yoga Sūtra "beyond eight limbs", join me for a course at truthofyoga.com. Welcome to Episode #70 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! My conversation with Yangchen Lhamo, a yoga teacher from Bhutan, was so delightful as we discussed how yoga is not just what you practice, but how you walk, talk, and interact with others. I hope that this conversation lit a spark in you, about how yoga can help all sentient beings. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about yoga as an act of service then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe Tell me more about Yangchen Lhamo Yangchen Lhamo is a yoga teacher and yoga studio owner in Bhutan. She teaches Hatha yoga, meditation, and Ashtanga Vinyasa. She completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh in January 2020, and opened Yoga Yangchen in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, in September 2020. In 2022, she completed her 300-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh. Yoga Yangchen's main social cause is Doghouse Bhutan, which she founded with her Bhutan-based Swiss friend Nadine. It is a community-based project. Doghouse Bhutan builds doghouses for the free-roaming dogs of Bhutan using scrap materials to protect them from the rain, cold, and snow. Yangchen's passion in life is creating and improving the well-being of all sentient beings— animals and people alike. She loves learning and exploring new things and meeting new people. She believes that changing the world for the better requires you to start with yourself. After all, ‘practice what you preach' is core to being able to inspire others. What to expect in the Yoga In Bhutan episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast I was astounded that Yangchen opened her yoga studio in the same year as getting her yoga certification, as well as in the middle of the pandemic! So many yoga studios closed during the pandemic, yet Yanchen knew it was time for her to open her own. She wanted to give back to her community. Yoga has given Yangchen so many beautiful gifts, like the ability to be more reflective instead of reactive. Yet, she sure has given so many gifts back to her community! Yangchen also shared with us her thoughts on yoga. Yoga is not just what you practice. Yoga is the way you walk, talk, and the actions you take. Everything, all the small things, is yoga. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Bhutan episode? Yoga in Bhutan has a long history, but hasn't been practiced by everyday people until very recently Yoga as a way to balance our everyday life and our emotions Opening a yoga studio the same year as getting certified Advice for teachers who want to open their own studio Yoga has helped her become more reflective instead of reactive Connect with Yangchen Lhamo www.yogayangchen.com https://www.instagram.com/yogayangchenbhutan/ https://www.facebook.com/yogayangchen https://www.instagram.com/doghousebhutan/ https://www.facebook.com/doghousebhutan Want more? Zulovich, a yoga teacher from Bosnia, was so illuminative as we took a deep dive into Vinyasa Krama yoga and about yin yoga as the sister to her yang brother. What to expect in the Yoga In Bosnia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Mike fell in love with yoga during his very first class. He took a class during a trip to Massachusetts. Yoga is impossible to learn from videos. There is an exchange of energy, immediate feedback, and alignment adjustments needed for yoga to occur. We talked about how technology is a great tool to use, but it does have its limitations— especially when it comes to yoga. Mike and I then talked about what is Vinyasa Krama yoga, and what it was like for him to go to India to studio Ashtanga Vinyasa and Vinyasa Krama yoga. Vinyasa Krama yoga is more accessible, with ten set sequences. If you do only yang, yang, yang. Then you may in deep need of yin. We all need balance in our lives. Andrew Eppler has been practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga for over 3 decades and is the director of Ashtanga Yoga Studio where he offers a variety of courses, classes and trainings both online and in person. Andrew has spent many years studying the philosophy of the Nathamuni Sampradaya tradition that Sri Krishnamacharya belonged to. Andrew is also the producer and director of the film Mysore Yoga Traditions. If you are interested in the history and culture that Ashtanga Yoga has come from Mysore Yoga Traditions film will be a beautiful experience! You can listen to the elders, scholars, spiritual leaders and even the Queen of Mysore herself telling the story of the yoga of Mysore. With the help and support of senior Sanskrit professors in Mysore Andrew has developed an approach to teaching physical postures that fits the modern paradigm. While staying grounded in traditional ideas about philosophy and the sequences of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, Andrew believes that there is inevitable evolution in yoga practice and uses a "global fusion" of techniques. Abrazo. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/veka/message

Adam Keen, host of the Keen on Yoga Podcast, talks with J about the evolution of yoga education and embodying devotion. They discuss behind the scenes podcast stuff, Purple Valley in Goa, nostalgia for earlier days when there was less competition, discovering the Ashtanga Vinyasa method and becoming "authorized," reconciling abuse histories of our teachers, when the linear journey of progress becomes the greatest obstacle, and distinguishing between faith, belief, and devotion in a process of learning to see more honestly.

Neljakümne kuues imeline külaline on Ketlin Bergmann. Rootsi on mul siiani südames ja igakord sinna minnes, tabab mind taaskord see “what if..”. Common sense ütleb, et ju nii pidi minema ja liiga kauaks ei lase ma endal selle “what if'ga” maadelda. Tulles tagasi jooga juurde, siis olen proovinud erinevaid stiile ning igal eluetapil on üks või teine olnud ka nö omal kohal ja vajalik. Viimaste aastate jooksul aga on mu süda kiskunud pigem füüsiliselt aktiivsemate jooga variatsioonide poole - Power Yoga, Yoga Sculpt, Ashtanga-Vinyasa (see on olnud nö põhjaks mulle esimesest tunnist alates). Treenerina töötan hetkel Arigatos ja Kalev Spas ning aktiivselt teen ka online tunde (Ketlini Online Yoga), seda nüüd eriti viimase aasta jooksul." We are very happy to present to you this interview with Gregor Maehle that was recorded around a year ago. Gregor’s path is a remarkable example of limitless determination to find the Truth. While not attempting to gain popularity and fame his ideas and views can be polarising, provoking and challenging. He dismisses authorities, hierarchies, guru worship and other unhealthy group dynamics. By doing so he is not only living out authentically one of the fundamental yogic attitudes of willing to know, rather than to believe, but also plays an extremely important social role that is becoming more and more scarce in today’s poisoned with political correctness world – by not sweetening up his words, pointing out things that are broken, views that are wrong and actions that are unethical he invites all of us to question our assumptions of reality, so that we can finally wake up from our ignorant slumber and experience the true joy of being. It is in sincere gratitude for his guidance on the path of Yoga that we release this interview.Show notesFirst glimpses of infinityDoer mentality, surrendering and graceWhat led Gregor to the practice of the 8-limbed YogaImmersing into teachings today vs in old timesTibetian Ngöndro, Six Yogas of Naropa, DzogchenPurification practices within the Ashtanga Yoga tradition and the mechanisms behind themWhy your meditation doesn’t workHappiness and robotic conditioningGregor’s spiritual practice and the sense of freedomBreath wavesExperience of Cosmic intelligence on different levelsThe differences and similarities of different spiritual pathsSvadharmaGregor’s observation of the modern Yoga landscapeTo find out more about Gregor’s teaching, learning materials, courses and in-depth blog article visit https://8limbs.com/Check out new book by Gregor Maehle: “How To Find Your Life’s Divine Purpose: Brain software for a new civilization”Head over to www.escaping-samsara.com to discover more episodes.Feel grateful and would like to support us? In this Keen on Yoga Podcast with Mary Taylor Freeman Adam discusses food and diet to support a yoga practice. Mary began studying yoga in 1971, soon after she came home from France with a grande diplôme from Julia Child’s cooking school, L’Ecole des Trois Gourmandes. She found yoga at first a means of finding equanimity during the stress of University, and it was that thread of balance that got her hooked. It was not until 1988 and finding her primary teacher, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and the Ashtanga Vinyasa system that she experienced the profound and transformative impact that a dedicated and daily practice can have on all aspects of life. She continues to study and practice yoga and Buddhist teachings with great enthusiasm and inquisitiveness, with an eye on how the residue that is produced on the mat (and cushion) through these teachings informs and supports all aspects of everyday life. Mary travels and teaches with Richard and also within the caregiver and hospital setting as part of the core faculty of the Being with Dying program (Upaya Zen Center) and the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Trainings. I In 1988 she co-founded with Richard the Yoga Workshop. Mary is also the author of three cookbooks and the co-author of What Are You Hungry For? Women Food and Spirituality (St. Martins Press) and The Art of Vinyasa (Shambhala Publications).

For the New Year and for the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius that it seems we've now fully entered… We have done the impossible for you! We've nailed down the spinning melodic kites that are Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor. What is truly incredible about these two is their enormous sense of self-awareness to the fishbowl world in which we all live. They know themselves and they see you, seeing them, and within this awareness Love comes to light. They become (as one of Richard's books suggests) “The Mirror of Yoga.” It's deeply uncomfortable to be human and to know our own weaknesses; yet, they manage to emanate grace and compassion throughout the kaleidoscopic lens of their lives. And in turn it reflects back on ours… Because, sitting next to someone— ‘Upana' is how we learn. And we are able to raise our own vibration simply by being near these two souls. Richard Freeman has been a student of yoga since 1968, beginning with one simple sitting posture in the Zen tradition. He spent nine years in Asia studying yoga asana, Sufism, Sanskrit language, and Indian philosophical texts; contextualizing them within the turbulent political times of that period in history. In 1974 Richard began working with B.K.S. Iyengar, with whom he studied precise alignment principles, applying them to his own internally rooted experience of the forms. Drawing from this variety of contemplative traditions, and from Buddhism, in which he cultivates a deep interest, Richard teaches the Ashtanga Vinyasa method of yoga as taught by his principal teacher, the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India Mary tells us about developing an eating disorder during her time in College, which led her to embrace the culinary arts as a way of mastering the beast that is anorexia, through food itself. With both Richard and Mary we discus at length our Ashtanga Yoga culture and the pitfalls. We believe that you will find this hour with them as fascinating and engrossing as we did. Somehow time in their presence is never enough. Andrew Eppler is the Director of Ashtanga Yoga Studio in Norman Oklahoma as well as the producer and director of the Mysore Yoga Traditions film. Yoga and been a life-long journey for Andrew and he has been practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga for over 3 decades. He had the unique experience of growing up with the practice and witnessed its evolution into world culture first-hand. Andrew has spent many years studying the philosophy of the Nathamuni Sampradaya tradition that Sri Krishnamacharya belonged to. He has developed an approach to teaching physical postures that fits the modern paradigm. He’s done this with the help and support of senior Sanskrit professors and the Royal Family of Mysore who began the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition. While staying grounded in traditional ideas about philosophy and the sequences of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, Andrew believes that there is inevitable evolution in yoga practice. He uses a "global fusion" of techniques. Andrew is constantly researching different methods, comparing techniques from yoga communities around the world as he travels, and refining them to create the best approach possible in his own teaching. We hope you enjoy the Keen on Yoga Podcast with Andrew Eppler. You can see more about him on his website.

David Williams is 71 years old. He began yoga practice at the age of 20. He was one of the first foreigners to travel to India in the early 1970s to learn yoga. He was the first non-Indian to learn the complete Ashtanga Vinyasa syllabus from Pattabhi Jois. He was one of the few people certified by Pattabhi Jois to teach all four asana series and the pranayama. He has practised Ashtanga Yoga daily, without interruption since 1973, perhaps longer than anyone else alive. He lives in Maui, Hawaii. His memoir of travelling the world and learning yoga, MY SEARCH FOR YOGA is available from his website, ashtangayogi.com.Show notesGetting into Yoga and choosing a life of freedomEarly influencersFirst Westerner to learn all four series of Ashtanga YogaDavid's favourite excerpt from Katha UpanishadWorking with meditation in the asana and Bandhas and Drishti in forward folds as taught by Sri KrishnamacharyaKechari Mudra and Kevala KumbhakaReal alchemy of YogaWorking with SamskarasYamas and NiyamasThoughts on pain and injury and Patthabi Jois's way of teachingKrishnamacharya, adjustments and evolution of his teaching methodologyStrong adjustments and long-time practice
#018: Simon Borg-Olivier Scott talks to Simon Borg-Olivier on his 50 years as a teacher and practitioner of yoga. Simon Borg-Olivier is a maverick and someone who has truly done his own research into how yoga works for him. Simon Borg-Olivier has been studying traditional forms of posture, movement and breathing for over 50 years. He has worked as a research-based scientist, exercise-based physiotherapist and a university lecturer. He has over 33 years experience teaching yoga, inspiring people all around the world. He co-founded Yoga Synergy in 1984 with Bianca Machliss, leading daily yoga classes, workshops, teacher training courses and international events. His passion for his work has brought him to understand the interconnectedness of the world around us, and the belief that we can make the world a better place by acknowledging and enhancing the connections within us and around us. The purpose of a yoga practise for Simon is to ‘lovingly encourage the circulation of energy and consciousness’ in the body, so that we can be in greater harmony with everything around us. You can find out more about Simon’s profile and teaching schedule here and his teacher training courses here Simon also has a new online Ashtanga Yoga course. You can access it here. Finding The Real Yoga – Simon Borg-Olivier Scott and Simon have an incredibly expansive conversation on SImon’s 50 year exploration into yoga and movement and his search for the ‘real’ yoga. Simon shares incredible stories of his time spent with some of the leading teachers of modern postural yoga and shares how he has formulated his unique approach to yoga teaching and practice. In this inspiring conversation Simon shares: How he was introduced to breathing techniques when he was very young. His fascination from an early age with the connection between yogis and nature. That for him, meditation is a deep deep process of the body and mind based on circulation of the blood in the body. How his approach to meditation resonated with the Iyengar teaching method. How meeting Professor Bim Dev Malik inspired him to see the possibilities of what yoga can achieve. That meeting Shandor Remete in 1985 really deepened his knowledge of Iyengar Yoga and sent him to meet BKS Iyengar in India, leading him to understand that only BKS Iyengar taught true Iyengar yoga. How he learnt Ashtanga yoga in 1985 from Robert Lucas, Cliff Barber and Danny Paradise. About meeting Pattabhi Jois in the 1990s, and w he’s still inspired by Ashtanga yoga. How he met TKV Desikachar, who was an influence too. How seeing and learning the Malakam practice in India inspired him greatly. Learning dasaran in Malakam was challenging but a way to connect with the Indian boys in India. The similarities between yoga postures and martial arts postures. About his time working in an Indian hospital. His decision to teach yoga rather than become an academic in 1992. How, as a result of a friend having a bad accident, he presented yoga exercises to doctors to help rehabilitate paraplegics. That training to be a physiotherapist was about being able to present yoga to doctors as a valid rehabilitation process. How becoming a physiotherapist changed his way of teaching people. His views on how easy it is to become a yoga teacher now, and why he set up his own teacher training programme. How Yoga Synergy became a system that could help benefit a wide range of people, basing it on traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga and adapting it for the modern body. How he healed from a back injury by changing how he moves as well as how he teaches, and how this non-traditional approach has been healing for himself and others. How care needs to be taken with yoga cueing so that their meaning and helpfulness doesn’t get lost or misunderstood How he met his teacher, Master Zhen Hua Yang, in 2007, who he continues to train with. How he sees his role as a teacher as learning from his mistakes and doing better job with his students than he did with himself. That the ultimate purpose of yoga is to realise that we are all one – a manifestation of connected consciousness – which we can start to realise by becoming physically connected with ourselves first. That, for him, the aim of yoga practice is to generate loving information and communication in the body by freeing good energy, and becoming yama and niyama in action. That, ultimately, it’s all about love. Simon talks about: Shandor Remete BKS Iyengar Prashant Iyengar Cliff Barber. ‘To me Simon Borg-Olivier is a teacher’s teacher. A modern day icon and maverick in the yoga world. He is a visionary and has never rested on his laurels, always learning… This conversation get’s behind how he has become the yogi we know and love. An essential listen for all modern day yoga practitioners who are on a quest for real yoga…. Scott Johnson – September 2020 If you enjoyed this podcast then you might also enjoy Scott’s conversations with Danny Paradise, Ann Weston, and Dr Matthew Clark.
This is a second interview in our two-part special with yoga teachers Mary Taylor and Richard Freeman. In our first conversation we were primarily focusing on different aspects of the Yoga practice. Now in this episode we explore the relationship between Yoga and Buddhism. We look closely at the content of both teachings to understand how they intersect, whether they are talking about same or similar things just under different angles, what is the reason between different emphasis of those, as well as how both traditions can support each other if you bring enough curiosity and create a space for a dialogue. Show notesThe relationship between Patanjali's 8 limbs and Buddha's 8 folded Path Different ways of setting the stage for compassion to arise in the yogic and buddhist traditions Yogic Samadhi vs. Buddhist Samadhi Navigating the diversity of practices References to Truth in Buddhism and Yoga, differences between solidifying authority vs. investigating authority Don't know mind The taste of Nirodha Different emphasis on purification practices in yogic and buddhist traditions Role of asana in buddhist schools and how the traditions come to communication in recent times Thoughts on the common synergy of yogic asana practice with Vipassana style meditation between yoga practitioners Pranayama, the sweetness of Kumbhaka and the right attitude

Judy Weaver, C-IAYT, E-RYT 500 Judy believes the practice of yoga helps to live life more fully, encouraging her students to have fun, find their edge, let go of expectations and incorporate yoga into their everyday lives. She holds Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga teaching and yoga therapist certifications. With over 30 years of learning and teaching as a yoga therapist, Judy has developed Bodymind Recalibration™ a multi-discipline practice building cognitive and somatic body-mind relationships and founded Connected Warriors, the largest volunteer based non-profit delivering Trauma-Conscious yoga programs to active-duty servicemembers, veterans and their families around the world. Judy developed Trauma-Conscious Yoga methodology in 2007 from her therapy work with an U.S. Army Ranger diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) easing his journey and extending the length and quality of his life. Trauma-Conscious Yoga is based on the understanding that trauma is held in the cells of the body and mind – it is physiological rather than psychological. Reconnecting the body and mind with the synchronization of conscious breath, movement and concentration in a safe, secure and predictable environment supports healing and wellness. This protocol has been used in 3 university clinical studies and is currently being used by Connected Warriors and other health care practitioners. As a member of Yoga Alliance Advisory Board, On-line Presenter and part of their Core Curriculum Working Group Judy has been able to share her passion for this practice of yoga to support the yoga community. She has also been a significant contributor to the YSC book “Best Practices for Yoga for Veterans”. Judy is honored to use her body of knowledge as she continues to lead certified yoga teacher trainings, workshops and lectures across the U.S at yoga conferences, festivals, universities, yoga studios and other locations. The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
Ed welcomes back Marisa Cranfill, who was a guest on episode 61 of season 1, where she educated Greg and Tony with her deep knowledge on Thai spirit houses. This time Marisa - a long-time Bangkok resident and noted expert in various styles of yoga and meditation - tells her story of studying abroad in China for university and finding the traditional Chinese practice of ‘qigong’ or life energy mastery, which gave her a whole new perspective on life. Since then, she has spent her time between Bangkok and San Diego, studying Ashtanga-Vinyasa yoga under teacher Adrian Cox at Yoga Elements Studio, as well as building her vipassana meditation practice with various teachers in Thailand and at the Little Bangkok Sangha. Marisa gives advice to beginners interested in yoga or meditation, stressing that the teacher is probably more important than the specific style, and she recommends two specific places in Bangkok: Yoga Elements Studio and the Little Bangkok Sangha. Marisa also explains her own unique integration of Yoga and Qigong into ‘Yoqi,’ a form of yin-yang yoga that combines what Marisa has learned from her years of studying Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism. As always, the podcast will continue to be 100% funded by listeners just like you who get some special swag from us. And we’ll keep our Facebook, Twitter, and LINE accounts active so you can send us comments, questions, or whatever you want to share.
Richard Freeman has been a student of yoga since 1968, beginning in the Buddhist Zen tradition and then later studying both the Iyengar and Ashtanga Vinyasa methods of yoga. Which may explain one of the reasons Richard can be notorious for dodging questions that beg for ONE answer. Because, as he says, “It’s sometimes more complex than that.” Though by sometimes, I believe he means ALL the time. You see, this knowing is a trap according to Richard. “All of a sudden, we understand something and at that point, we think we got it … but what we got or what we’re taking away is just this one little point of view of something. So look again. It’s much deeper.” Richard tells us to instead, be like the curious child, always asking, why? And then, look again. Or in the case of this podcast, listen again. Because no doubt, with so many fascinating nuggets and stories, layered throughout - this is one episode, you will want to come back to, again and again. This episode of the Ashtanga Dispatch Podcast was edited and hosted by Peg Mulqueen along with Meghan Powell, and Chris Lucas as producer. Please visit www.ashtangadispatch.com for more episodes.
It was a real treat to catch up with my friend Danny Paradise on the rare occasion that he's at home in Hawaii. In this conversation we discuss the shamanic roots of yoga, ayahuasca, music, aging gracefully and his work raising awareness for the Children of the Forest, a sanctuary and school for orphaned and abandoned kids in Thailand.Danny Paradise has been practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga since 1976 and teaching worldwide since 1979. He is known for his non-dogmatic and exploratory approach to Ashtanga Vinyasa and has taught numerous well-known musicians, athletes and artists including Sting and Madonna. He travels the world teaching all levels of students and encourages people to take up a sacred, personal and healing yoga practice. In addition to teaching yoga, Danny is an accomplished musician, songwriter and filmmaker. He has released two albums of music, River of the Soul in 2000 and Travellers, Magicians and Shamans in 2008.Music by Danny Paradise: iTunesDanny's website: dannyparadise.comChildren of the Forest: childrenoftheforest.orgAbout Brian JamesBrian James is a yoga teacher, musician and artist currently living in Montréal, Canada. Paul Dallaghan, founder of Centered Yoga at Samhita Retreat Center in Koh Samui, Thailand www.samahitaretreat.com Paul Dallaghan formally established Centered Yoga in New York City in 1999, and soon thereafter began the first training course. Although the course was born out of a direct request from students, at the time Paul had also been thinking about how to raise the standards of yoga education. He felt a need to offer teaching that would preserve the integrity of traditional yogic practices while also carefully examining and understanding their origins and meaning. Since the very beginning of Centered Yoga, Sri O.P. Tiwari (head of the Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute near Bombay) has been its main advisor, principally owing to his longstanding relationship with Paul. As such, Centered Yoga enjoys full affiliation with Kaivalyadhama, a highly regarded research facility dedicated to examining yoga practices from both scientific and traditional points of view. Established by Swami Kuvalayananda in 1924, Kaivalyadhama has had tremendous influence on the understanding and propagation of yoga in India and throughout the world. Indeed, both Gandhi and Nehru were students of Swamiji; Swami Sivananda dedicated the first issue of every book to Kuvalayananda; and Krishnamacharya studied there in 1933, sent by the Maharaja of Mysore. Sri O.P. Tiwari is Swamiji’s key disciple. To Tiwari he left the institute, as well as valuable personal teachings, particularly in the field of Pranayama. Tiwariji is thus one of the most authoritative sources on Pranayama today. He is an experienced, extremely knowledgeable master who stays true to the traditions of yoga, preserving its integrity so that students, present and future, can benefit fully. This lineage, or parampara, is the force behind the teachings, as well as what drives all the courses of Centered Yoga. Eighty years of painstaking research into different aspects of yoga is hard to equal in the modern world. As one of three senior students of Tiwariji, Paul is committed to continuing the legacy through personal practice and a genuine approach to living yoga daily. He has spent years learning and practicing the full Pranayama to an advanced level under Tiwariji, has sat beside him to learn how to read pulse specifically for Pranayama, and has studied closely what goes on in its practice. Paul has also spent many years with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, becoming one of a few students worldwide to be certified by him. His advanced Asana and vinyasa practice combined with a deeper insight born of a solid Pranayama practice enable Paul to better guide students through key concepts involving the body and breath. Centered Yoga has since grown to become a leader in the field of yoga education, offering thorough and professional courses since its founding. Paul moved to Thailand toward the end of 2001 and resumed teaching the training courses the following year. Out of this sprouted Samahita Retreat-the venue for yoga retreats, training courses, and, most recently, wellness programs. Over the years Centered Yoga has helped train over seven hundred students, many of whom have gone on to teach. For all, even those who decide not to teach, the training programs are a time for deep practice and growth in the understanding of yoga. Many esteemed teachers have also come to share their knowledge; among them Tiwariji, who continues to be Centered Yoga’s primary teacher and yoga master. He believes in the programs and recognizes the need for an advanced level of training, practice, and learning by students, especially those that go on to teach others. Others include Richard Freeman, Prof Jayashree, Prof Nagaraja Rao and other anatomical and ayurvedic specialists. Centered Yoga makes its home in Samahita Retreat-a center established specifically for practicing yoga and learning healthy and positive living habits. This in itself is a unique advantage. Samahita Retreat provides an ideal environment in which to learn, experience, and practice the lessons imparted in our courses. Few such places exist in the modern world. The fact that Centered Yoga is one of the first schools to become a member of Yoga Alliance is attractive to many students, especially those who use its courses as a platform from which to teach. Centered Yoga offers 200- and 500-hour-level qualifications; furthermore, it has its own qualification level, Distinguished Advanced-Level Teacher, which a student reaches after 1100 hours. Centered Yoga’s purpose is not to churn out teachers but to guide, inspire, and uplift students of yoga. Sincerity is therefore a primary qualification, the inner quality that allows a student to approach his or her personal development and the practices in an earnest and mature way.

Marina is a certified 200-hour registered yoga teacher. Marina received her certification in 2014 from Yoga in the World under the instruction of Anayra Calderon. After over 10 years of working in television production and entertainment, Marina came to yoga to find balance in her often hectic professional life. Marina fell in love with the way yoga challenged her physically through asana practice as well as mentally and spiritually through meditation practice. In March of 2015 Marina traveled to India to further her yoga education and study Ashtanga Vinyasa with Jamie Clarke and Dulce Aguilar of The Yoga People. In November of 2016 Marina completed her Reiki Level 1 certification in hopes to enhance her work as a yoga teacher and to gain more understanding and knowledge of the healing powers of ancient practices. Marina's greatest passion in life is traveling and exploring foreign lands. Marina was bitten by the travel bug at a very young age, having traveled with her family from her native Brazil to New York City at only 2 years old. Marina believes that traveling, as much as yoga and meditation, are an essential part of her health and wellness. Traveling, retreating, adventure, as well as yoga, are all tools that Marina believes broadens your scope of the world and allows for you to get out of your own way. Exploring your bodies through asana practice, your minds through meditation, and different people and cultures through travel, cultivates compassion and kindness. In 2015, Marina became the official Yoga Teacher for World Travelers Association (WTA) and has been teaching yoga on WTA experiences around the world. Marina's vision is about crafting worldly, and fulfilling experiences for those who seek to learn about the world, and themselves through yoga, meditation, and adventure. Ty Landrum: Illuminating the Practice and Philosophies of Yoga: Lineage & Connection to OthersNamaste, Yoga Revealed Community! Thanks for reading in on this week’s BlogPost, with information and wisdom shared with Ty Landrum, Director of the Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado. Ty is someone who I feel strongly connected to as a genuine example of what it means to be a Yoga Teacher in 2016. He is dedicated to the path of observing his tendencies and committed to sharing yoga with his community, and anyone that walks through the doors at the Yoga Workshop. You can hear his passion when you speaks. Check this episode out and feel inspired to take your Yoga Practice to the next level! I first found myself in a Mysore (self-guided primary series practice) after about 2 years of daily practice at CorePower Yoga. Truly, thank god for the Guru’s who brought yoga to West! They made it accessible for our western minds to breathe into a spiritual practice by introducing a form of body movement. As many began practicing this Asana based practice, sometimes they became curious about more of the tradition. Which I believe leads them to Ashtanga Vinyasa or another practice rooted in lineage. I walked into the doors of the Yoga Workshop and was humbled immediately. I left a studio where I was able to ‘nail’ postures and tackle them effortlessly. Moving through the primary series took incredible patience as my body was not yet ready for majority of the poses, which at the time, was foreign to me. and So…...I practiced. And more come to me. My body opened up. This was under the guidance of Ty Landrum and Richard Freeman’s Wife, Mary Taylor, whom will be on the podcast, check back soon! Ty teaches from an intuitive place, where he feels what is best for the student to be practicing, whether it is simple Surya Namaskar A’s or segments of the standing series, or advancing into the 2nd or 3rd series. It is all relative to the individual, which Ty pays an undivided amount of attention to. Ty is an authentic being. He speaks with eloquence and charisma. Having been a philosopher professor, his words leave you in wonder. We dive into the lineage of Ashtanga Vinyasa. I believe it is important for our modern day practitioners to simply have an understanding of this practice, as most asana based studios in the West derive from Ashtanga, or Hatha yoga, from one teacher to student and so on. RESISTANCE TO YOGA! Over long periods of times, this tendency to react to any form of resistance slowly is diminished. I feel a resistance to practicing quite often. And this is when things get exciting….Listen to the podcast to hear more about this intriguing topic. CRYiNG iN YOGA To preface….. We are friends of crying. Tears are an amazing form of releasing emotion built up in the body, without lashing out. To feel….is amazingly Human. Ty and I discuss why we should practice not crying in yoga. Redirecting the energy to experience them more Raw and more complete, perhaps more multi-dimensional. we do this by decontextualizing the experience. Various emotions produce tears. Sadness is the first. Yet Happiness, inspiration, and naturally mourning calls in tears to the eyes. This is a powerful and perhaps controversial topic for many. Listen in on Ty’s beautiful perspective on how to mindfully respond to the tears on the podcast. We can evolve past our old ingrained traumas, which is what the Yoga is trying to teach us. We can experience old memories through the course of breathing and stretching our tissues; bringing up old scars. When we are ready to move on and let this go….. we undertake this practice of release without tensing around it. Check this and more from Ty out in this week's episode of the Yoga Revealed Podcast!
