Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news that while financial markets are quiet due to the US Labor Day holiday, the data being reported in the rest of the world is actually very encouraging, especially for the factory sectors. In China, the private Caixin PMI has a new sponsor - RatingDog. It is still produced by S&P Global. That August factory PMI showed manufacturing output returned to growth in August. Total new business expanded at quickest pace since March. But it also reported the fastest rise in average input prices in nine months. As has become the norm in 2025, this private PMI series is more bullish than the official PMI.While we are noting improved factory PMIs in Australia and China, we should also note that they improved in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia as well. The Trump tariff-taxes aren't killing these countries. In fact, because it is the American importers who are paying these taxes (and ultimately the American consumer), the whole tariff journey just shows the American's are prepared to pay a lot more for what they import, and demand isn't flagging. Yet, anyway.Of special note is the regaining of momentum in India where their factory PMI turned notably higher on new orders and new-found momentum. This is now their fastest improvement in operating conditions in seventeen and a half years, with production growth accelerating to a nearly five-year high, supported by strong demand and better alignment of supply with orders. New orders rose at the fastest pace in nearly five years, and given they have been strong in the lead-up, this is really saying something.Even European factories are on the move up, returning to expansion with the sharpest rise in factory output since March 2022. Their factory PMI is now at its highest in 41 months.Australia's factory sector expansion accelerated again in August. Higher new order levels, supported by a rise in exports, led to a solid rise in production. Confidence rose to its highest level since February 2022. The survey showed that manufacturers hired more staff and raised their purchasing and inventory levels. Meanwhile price pressures remained little problem. And staying in Australia, their residential building consents fell -8.2% in July from June, almost double the market expectations of a -4.8% fall. This sharply ate into the upwardly revised +12.2% increase in June. The decline was largely due to a sharp fall in approvals for dwellings that weren't houses (apartments and townhouses). By state, approvals fell sharpest in New South Wales (-25%), while rising in Tasmania (+12%), Western Australia (+12%), in Queensland (+5.9%).Lower new homebuilding is juicing up their existing-home real estate markets. Cotality reported strong August gains from July, up +0.7% for the month nationally. It's back as a strong sellers market. The rises in Brisbane and Perth are notable, but the gains in Adelaide and Sydney were not far behind them in August. The consequences for affordability for most aspiring buyers look awful. We should probably also note that the forecast for Australia's wheat crop was raised sharply in an overnight update. Good rains recently is behind the revision. The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.25%, up +2 bps from yesterday at this time. The key 2-10 yield curve is up at +62 bps. The last time it was this steep was in February 2022. Long dated yields are on the move higher. The UST 30 year yield is actually closing in on 2007 levels. The price of gold will start today at US$3,477/oz, up +US$30 from yesterday and a new record high. Silver topped US$40/oz for the first time since 2011, also near a record high.American oil prices are +50 USc firmer at just over US$64.50/bbl with the international Brent price holding just over US$68/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is at just on 59 USc and unchanged from yesterday. Against the Aussie we are down -10 bps 90 AUc. Against the euro we are down -10 bps as well at 50.4 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just over 66.4, down -10 bps from yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at US$108,918 and little-changed (down -0.1%) from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been modest at just under +/- 1.2%.You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again tomorrow.

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back together for a special behind-the-scenes edition of the Helium Boys Podcast. The Helium Boys work through the process of compiling and debating a post-fall camp re-rank of USCfootball.com's Top 30 Most Important Trojans' list. For the last six seasons, the USCfootball.com staff has counted down the Top 30 Most Important Trojans in a series of offseason articles leading up to the kickoff of fall camp. Each year under Lincoln Riley, the USC roster has seen significant turnover each year making it a bit of a guessing game trying to figure out who is going to play and how valuable they are going to be toward the team's success, so we've incorporated a re-rank when the Trojans' football team makes the transition from fall camp to game preparation in the week leading up to the season opener. Each USCfootball.com staff member submits his own list of whom he/she believes will be the most important Trojans. Considerations for the rankings take in a wide range of factors including positional depth, 2024 stats, overall talent, departures from the previous season, projected development and expectations. The only guidance we try to follow is that the most important factor for placement is if this particular player was lost for the season, how detrimental would it be to the team and the overall success of the season. The individual lists are submitted and compiled before Shotgun and Chris come together to sift through the information, debate and assemble the official USCfootball.com rankings. In this podcast, the Helium Boys give you a peek behind the curtain, allowing you to listen in on the re-rankings discussion as we sift, sort and come up with the final preseason rankings. The re-rank includes several risers on the defensive side of the ball, including offensive linemen Tobias Raymond and Justin Tauanuu, as well as players whose importance declined whether through an inability to lock up a starting role or the emergence of other players. Episode NotesMatthew 6:34 “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today.” Wow, this is a great verse for all of us to write down and place around us. The thing is, when we read this, it sounds so simple. Don't worry about tomorrow, you will have time for that later; you have enough to worry about today. Don't you wish it were that simple? Don't you wish you could just tell yourself not to worry, and then you actually don't worry? Life would be so much simpler if it worked that way. I don't think this verse is telling us anything that we don't already know on some level. We know that we don't need to worry about the future because we don't even know what will happen in the future. We also know that there is plenty to worry about in this moment without borrowing worries from another day. So, if we already know all of this, why do we still worry about tomorrow? We still worry for the same reason that we still eat candy and drink soda, even though we know eating vegetables and drinking water is better for us. We still worry for the same reason that we watch TV instead of working out, even though we know working out is better for us. We worry because that is what we have trained our brains to do. We worry because that is what we have done in the past. We worry because that is our habit. We worry because it is an automatic response, and changing automatic responses takes work.Is it possible for you or me to change how much we worry, yes. I know this is hard for some of you to believe. I know so many people who identify with the identity of being a worrier. They say things like “It's just who I am,” or “I have always been a worrier, I can't change it now.” Is this you? Be honest with yourself, have you said these things? Do you believe that you are a worrier and that will never change? I get it, if you have always done something, then you assume you will always do it. You don't know anything different. However, this doesn't need to be the case. You may be a person who worries, but that is not your identity. I used to be someone who hated to get up in the morning, and then I started to get up at 5:30 in the morning so I could get prayer time and workout time in before the kids woke up. Was it easy to make this switch? Not at all. Was it worth it? Absolutely. You can change. Who you are is not set in stone. There are two different mindsets that we can have. If you have a fixed mindset, then you believe that intelligence, talent, and other qualities are innate and unchangeable. Basically, you are who you are. If you are not good at something, you typically believe you will never be good at it. However, a growth mindset means you believe these things can be developed with practice. You believe that just because you can't do something yet, it doesn't mean that you won't ever be able to do it. I think if you look around you, there are a lot of examples to prove that just because you are not good at something, it doesn't mean you will never be good at it. Did you know that Michael Jordon was cut from his high school basketball team before he went on to win 6 championships, 5 MVP awards, and 2 Olympic gold medals? Did you know that Steven Spielberg, the only director to have made over 10 billion dollars at the box office from his films, was rejected 3 times from USC's film school. Michael Jordon was not born an amazing basketball player. He had to work hard to become an amazing basketball player. He made a goal of getting 100 free throws in a row. This meant if he got to 75 and missed one, he would start all over again. He also spent the entire summer doing two practice sessions a day, six days a week, shooting at least 500 jump shots in each practice. That's more than 6,000 practice shots each week!I know many of you listening to this may not be basketball fans. I am not a basketball fan either. I tell you this story to show you that just because you can't do something now, it doesn't mean you will never be able to do it. Also, just because you do something now, like worry, doesn't mean you always have to do. Hopefully by now, some of you who were skeptical at first are starting to believe that you can change if you want to. It was pretty simple for Michael Jordon to become an excellent basketball player. He knew what skills he needed to develop, and then he practiced them over and over again until he got really good at them. It wasn't easy, it took a lot of work, but it was simple. In this same way, worrying less is simple, but it is not easy. If we want to worry less, then we need to take control of our thoughts. It says in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “…and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” You can take your thoughts captive. You can be in charge of what you think and what you don't think. This may seem impossible, and I understand why you would think that. We live in a society where we don't really have to think for ourselves if we don't want to. There are news networks that tell us what to think, there are movies and TV shows that influence how we think, and there are social media “influencers” that tell us what we should and shouldn't like. If we look at commercials, magazines, books, radio shows, and podcasts, we are constantly being told what to think. So, I get that you don't think you can help how you think or what you think about. However, it is possible.I read an article titled “Radical Trust” by Laura Fleetwood (Seeking the Still). Laura mentioned that a friend sent her this verse in an email, and it was a much-needed reminder. She said that although there is so much in this world that we can't control, we CAN control our thoughts. After reading this verse, every time her mind wanted to worry about something, she would take captive that thought and hand it over to Jesus. This is what she said, “Literally, in my mind, I snatch it and give it to Jesus. And then I tell myself, I trust you, Jesus. I trust you. I trust you.” She also says, “Take this fearful thought, Lord. Take the what-ifs, should haves, and could haves. I give them to you again, and again, and again.” When she gets a fearful or worrisome thought in her head, this is what she does, “Snatch…Hand it over…I trust you, Jesus. Snatch…Hand it over…I trust you, Jesus. Snatch…Hand it over…I trust you, Jesus.” If Laura can do this, so can you. It won't be easy, but if you get in the habit of doing it then it will become easier. Starting a new habit is always difficult; however, isn't worrying all the time hard too? Do you like how you feel when you spend so much time worrying? What would you give in order not to have to worry so much? If it feels like you worry about everything all the time, know that you are not alone. It is pretty common. Do you have one thing that you always worry about? One situation or topic that you worry about more than others? For instance, your children, your car, your abilities? If you are someone who seems to worry about everything, then even just thinking about capturing your thoughts may feel overwhelming. This is why I just asked if there was one thing you worry about more than the others. Maybe just start with one area. Try to pay attention and listen to yourself saying things about that one topic. When you do hear it, snatch the thought, hand it over, and say Jesus, I trust you. Once you get that area down, you can move on to another. You can do this! We can do this! Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for all those listening to this episode today. Lord, please bless them. Lord, we ask that you help us control our thoughts. When the enemy starts whispering his fancy lies into our ears, help us to snatch the thoughts and hand them over to you. Lord help us all to worry less and trust more. Lord, even if we are worried, help us to still move forward with faith in you. Lord you are truly amazing and we are so lucky that you love us and do so much for us. We thank you, Lord, and we ask all of this in accordance with your scripture and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. On this episode of the Close In Podcast, Chloe Clark closes in on USC basketball guard, Malia Samuels. From growing up in Seattle hoops culture to helping the Trojans reach the Elite 8, Malia opens up about bouncing back from an ACL injury, riding the wave of women's basketball, and what drives her competitive edge. She shares the story behind her "Pitbull" nickname, what it was like to watch Juju Watkins' 51 point game, and even meeting Michael B. Jordan pre-game.
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back to discuss the 2025 season opener against Missouri State with new revelations along the offensive line with Tobias Raymond taking over the left guard spot, former walk-on Kilian O'Connor winning the competition to be USC's center and Justin Tauanuu settling in as the right tackle starter. Unlike last season, the Trojans get to start the season with a lower profile game, giving this offense an opportunity to figure things out on the offensive line before the meat of the Big Ten schedule. Missouri State moved up from the FCS level, leaving the Missouri Valley Conference for Conference USA and will play its first game as an FBS program against the Trojans. The guys talk about some of the challenges the Bears can pose on Saturday and what they are looking to see from this Trojan football team. USC does have a couple of injuries heading into the opener including freshman defensive lineman Jahkeem Stewart and kicker Caden Chittenden. It's officially Week 1! Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back behind the microphones for another edition of the Helium Boys Podcast to break down USC's Week 1 opponent: Missouri State, which will be making its debut at the FBS level. The show kicks off with the patented 'Two-Minute Drill' with Trevino commenting on Lincoln Riley's comments on Trojans Live about the starting lineup along the offensive line. Shotgun talks about his excitement for the start of the season, and his hurried travel plans this past weekend in Georgia. The Helium Boys then take their first official preview of the 2025 season with Missouri State. Missouri State wasn't a world beater at the FCS level with just four playoff appearances since 1989 and a 30-26 record since 2020. The Bears are projected to be among the bottom of Conference USA with a win projection between 5.4-6.7 per ESPN's Football Power Index. It's been an emotional offseason for the Bears program after the death of senior safety Todric McGee in spring from an accidental gunshot wound. McGee was projected to be a starter in the secondary, leaving a huge loss in the defense and program. When we talk about households led by single parents, we often think about mothers. But a rising number of families are led by single fathers: men who are parenting alone by choice – whether through adoption or surrogacy – or because of divorce, separation or widowhood. Single dads often have the same challenges as single mothers because the economics and emotional work of parenting solo are not always easy. Yet, single fathers also report being lonelier and less sure of how to access support than mothers. We'll look at the experience of single fatherhood and hear from you: are you a single dad or were you raised by one? What's your story? Guests: Faith Hill, staff writer, The Atlantic - Hill's most recent article is titled "The Growing Cohort of Single Dads by Choice" Ignacio Ferrey, director, Fatherhood and Adolescent Services, Alameda County Public Health Department Ron Poole-Dayan, executive director and founder, Men Having Babies - a nonprofit organization that offers guidance and financial assistance for gay men who want to become fathers through surrogacy Darby Saxbe, associate professor of psychology, USC - director, USC Center for the Changing Family Dr. Ken Epstein, therapist and social worker; from 2012-2018, Epstein was the director of the Children Youth and Family System of Care for San Francisco's Behavioral Health Services Learn more about your ad choices. Simon1025GDP Script/ Top Stories for August 26th Publish Date: August 26th PRE-ROLL: From The BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, August 26th and Happy Birthday to Melissa McCarthy I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia Duluth's Notre Dame Academy celebrates two decades of 'seeing every student' Former Kennedy Center manager returns to Gwinnett to lead Lawrenceville Arts Center Dick Goodman remembered for support of libraries, Suwanee community All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Break 1: Kia MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: Duluth's Notre Dame Academy celebrates two decades of 'seeing every student' For nearly 20 years, Julie Derucki has started her mornings the same way: a long commute, a quiet walk through the halls flipping on lights, and then, at 7:50 a.m., she’s at the front door, greeting every single student with warmth and intention. Rain, shine, freezing cold—it doesn’t matter. It’s her thing. Notre Dame Academy, a Marist Catholic school in Duluth, has spent 20 years building more than just academics. It’s a community—a village, really—where students are seen, known, and loved. Teacher Regan Jolley-Sherman felt it the moment she interviewed. From international potlucks to family picnics, Notre Dame celebrates its people. And while academics matter, Derucki’s focus is clear: raising empathetic, grounded leaders. STORY 2: Former Kennedy Center manager returns to Gwinnett to lead Lawrenceville Arts Center Daniela Esteves is coming back to Gwinnett, and this time, she’s taking the reins as complex general manager of the Lawrenceville Arts Center. Most recently with the Kennedy Center in D.C., Esteves has done it all—programming, marketing, event management, you name it. She even spent a couple of years at Gas South District in Duluth before heading north. Lawrenceville’s Arts Center isn’t just a venue—it’s a hub for connection and culture. And with Esteves at the helm, it’s poised to thrive. STORY 3: Dick Goodman remembered for support of libraries, Suwanee community Dick Goodman wore many hats in his 83 years—city councilman, PR pro, photographer, library advocate, and the first chair of Suwanee’s Public Art Commission. But more than titles, he was a storyteller, a community builder, and a man who poured his heart into everything he touched. Goodman passed away last week, leaving behind a legacy that’s woven into the fabric of Suwanee. After moving to Suwanee in 2006, it didn’t take long for him to dive in. By 2009, he was on the City Council, later chairing the Gwinnett Library Board for eight years. Today, a room at the Suwanee library bears his name—a fitting tribute for someone who championed the power of stories. Even in his final hours, Goodman was at a Suwanee planning meeting, still giving back. His family is now raising funds to make the “Novel Idea” sculpture—a granite bench shaped like books—a permanent part of the library he loved so much. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: MONSTER JAM STORY 4: Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run set for September For over a decade, the Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run has been a highlight for boaters on Lake Lanier, and this year, it’s getting a shake-up. Zach Martin, a longtime participant, is stepping in as the 2025 organizer, and he’s bringing back the big powerboats. This year’s event, running Sept. 12-13, will benefit K9s for Warriors and the Foster Care Support Foundation—causes close to Martin’s heart. The weekend will feature everything from a helicopter photoshoot to raft-ups at Cocktail Cove, with nightly stops at Margaritaville and Lanier Islands Resort. For details, visit www.lanierislands.com. STORY 5: Discount retailer Burlington opening store in Lawrenceville Lawrenceville’s about to get a new spot for bargain hunters—Burlington is opening a store at the Shoppes at Creekside, right off State Route 316 at 860 Duluth Highway. The grand opening? Sometime this fall. Burlington’s pitch? Big brands, small prices—up to 60% less than other retailers. Clothes, shoes, home decor, beauty products, baby gear, even pet toys—it’s all there. And the new store will feature their updated layout with bold signs and organized aisles, making it easier to snag those deals. This will be Burlington’s 38th Georgia location and sixth in Gwinnett. They’re hiring now—apply at BurlingtonStores.jobs. We’ll be right back. Break: MONSTER JAM STORY 6: ART BEAT: Artist-photographer Debra Barnhart launches new Instagram site filled with wildlife Rudyard Kipling once called Yellowstone “a howling wilderness… full of unimaginable freaks of fiery nature.” Debra Barnhart? She saw it differently. Her February trip with National Geographic wasn’t easy. Snow, ice, and heavy camera gear tested her resolve. The result? Stunning wildlife photos—bison dusted in snow, a white owl, and more. Her new Instagram, Debra Barnhart Nature Photography, showcases it all. STORY 7: Georgia Bulldogs Readying for Saturday's Season Opener The Georgia Bulldogs are easing into the 2025 season, but don’t let that fool you—things are about to get intense. First up? Marshall this Saturday at Sanford Stadium. Then it’s straight into the SEC gauntlet: Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Auburn, Ole Miss. Buckle up. On offense, it’s a new era. Gunner Stockton, the Rabun County legend, finally gets his shot after Carson Beck’s transfer. Stockton? He’s ready—quiet confidence, big arm, and a fresh set of weapons, including USC transfer Zachariah Branch and Illinois’ Josh McCray. Defense? Still Georgia’s pride. Sure, they’ve got holes to fill—NFL-sized ones—but returners like C.J. Allen and Daylen Everette are stepping up. Tackling? A work in progress, Smart admits. New faces, new challenges, same Georgia standard. Let’s see how it plays out. We’ll have closing comments after this. In this episode of Mastering eCommerce Marketing, host Eitan Koter sits down with Chelsea Burns, better known as The Marketing Psychologist™. Chelsea has more than 17 years in marketing, holds a master's in applied psychology from USC, and works with conscious companies to help them grow without losing sight of their values. She is also the creator of the BELONG™ Framework, a model built to help brands earn trust, create alignment, and build real connections with their audiences.Chelsea explains why integrity and authenticity are more than just nice-sounding words. For her, they are the foundation of healthy brand relationships. She shares how growing up with values like keeping your word shaped her career and why she believes authenticity means showing up fully, even when it is messy. One of the big takeaways in this conversation is the idea that marketing does not have to be manipulative. Chelsea talks about where persuasion crosses the line into manipulation and how companies can practice ethical influence that respects customer choice. We also get into the psychology of decision-making. Chelsea highlights that 95 percent of buying decisions happen in the subconscious, and she shares tools companies can use to better understand those deeper motivators. From empathy to active listening, she explains how brands can connect with the “higher version” of their customers, not just their surface-level wants. Finally, Chelsea walks us through the BELONG™ Framework and why belonging is as critical to people as food and water. For her, branding is a relationship, and when it is rooted in truth, it naturally builds confidence and trust. If you want to understand how psychology and marketing come together to create brands people truly feel connected to, this episode is for you.Website: https://www.vimmi.net Email us: info@vimmi.net Podcast website: https://vimmi.net/mastering-ecommerce-marketing/ Talk to us on Social:Eitan Koter's LinkedIn | Vimmi LinkedIn | YouTube Guest: Chelsea Burns, CEO + Marketing Psychologist at The Marketing PsychologistChelsea Burns's...

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking USC football game week finally arriving, with the Missouri State Bears coming to the Coliseum to kick things off on Saturday afternoon. Last season head coach Ryan Beard led MSU to an 8-4 record, 6-2 in the Missouri Valley, good for 4th place in the conference. This season the Bears move up to Conference USA and will try to shock the world with an upset of USC on the road. The guys talk about what the challenges are of facing a lower level opponent out of the gate as opposed to a high profile opener like the Trojans had last season against LSU. They also share what they know about this Missouri State football program including how Beard took over for then head coach Bobby Petrino following the 2022 college football season. Petrino has since moved on to become the offensive coordinator at UNLV in 2023, Texas A&M in 2024 and now Arkansas in 2025. Coach Hyde talks about how he feels that high school football in Southern California is as good as anywhere in the country. Coach Hyde is a former high school coach and to see these top teams travel across the country and win was really impressive. He also talks about using private quarterback coaches and how he feels the SEC going to nine conference games will help USC keep its series with Notre Dame going into the future. Coach Harvey Hyde has been part of the Peristyle Podcast since 2008 and in the USC football world he is an expert on X's and O's, personnel, coaching philosophies and recruiting. On Josh Pate’s College Football Show Ep 650 we discussed that plus more bold predictions for the season. Could Arch enter the Transfer Portal? What about an Ohio State vs Notre Dame rematch in the CFP title game? Could FSU beat Alabama and go on to the ACC title game? We also get the latest whispers and intel from fall camps including USC, Texas A&M, Arizona State, and Missouri.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
