Lori Matthias and her husband had tired of Atlanta traffic when they moved to St. Augustine, Florida, in 2023. For Mike Waldron and his wife, moving from the Boston area in 2020 to a place that bills itself as "the nation's oldest city" was motivated by a desire to be closer to their adult children. They were among thousands of white-collar remote workers who migrated to the St. Augustine area in recent years, transforming the touristy beach town into one of the top remote work hubs in the United States. Matthias fell in love with St. Augustine's small-town feeling, trading the hour-long commute she had in Atlanta for bumping into friends and acquaintances while running errands. "The whole pace here is slower and I'm attracted to that," said Matthias, who does sales and marketing for a power tool company. "My commute is like 30 steps from my kitchen to my office. It's just different. It's just relaxed and friendly." Centuries before becoming a remote work hub, the St. Augustine area was claimed by the Spanish crown in the early 16th century after explorer Juan Ponce de Leon's arrival. In modern times, it is best known for its Spanish architecture of terra cotta roofs and arched doorways, tourist-carrying trolleys, a historic fort, an alligator farm, lighthouses and a shipwreck museum. In St. Johns County, home to St. Augustine, the percentage of workers who did their jobs from home nearly tripled from 8.6% in 2018 to almost 24% in 2023, moving the Northeast Florida county into the top ranks of U.S. counties with the largest share of people working remotely, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures. Scott Maynard, a vice president of economic development for the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce, attributes the initial influx of new residents to Florida's lifting of COVID-19 restrictions in businesses and schools in the fall of 2020 while much of the country remained locked down. This article was provided by The Associated Press.
AP correspondent Donna Warder reports on a historic Florida county that's now a work-from-home hub.

Las Catalinas might be the most beautiful town built in the 21st century. And my guest today, Sara Bega, has stewarded its evolution as Town Architect for a decade. Las Catalinas is a car-free, kid-friendly, multi-generational community in Costa Rica. Their goal is to create a pedestrian-first environment that maximizes kid freedom and allows for independent exploration and discovery. The town is built on 20% of the 1200-acre site, with a mix of houses, flats, hotels, and shops. We discuss Sara's professional journey, and the principles and practices behind developing such a stunningly beautiful and human neighborhood that serves as an inspiration and example for what is possible today. If you do anything today, just click on this link so you can see the town. It stands as a testament to the beauty humans can cultivate when they set their mind to it: Beach Town in Guanacaste, Costa Rica | Las Catalinas (lascatalinascr.com) TAKEAWAYS Creating a car-free, kid-friendly community allows for independent exploration and fosters curiosity and connection with nature. A pedestrian-first environment benefits not only children but also adults and families, creating a sense of community and connection. Las Catalinas is a successful example of a car-free community, with a mix of houses, flats, hotels, and shops built on a 1200-acre site. The community achieves car-free living through walkability, valet services, and emergency vehicle access. The town architect's role is to oversee the design and planning of the community, ensuring a balance between privacy, walkability, and optimized views. Creating a sustainable and adaptable community requires prioritizing human experience and connection. Designing a walkable town with a mix of residential and commercial spaces fosters a sense of community. The legal structure of a town should allow for flexibility and adaptability over time. Trust in human intelligence and the ability to solve problems is crucial for the success of a community. Creating a sense of place involves considering the local climate, using natural materials, and designing for the long term. We're continuing to add to your beach read pile today with another fiction pick I couldn't get enough of: Summers at the Saint by Mary Kay Andrews, which is out May 7. Mary Kay is so talented at making the setting or the place of her books as a character in the novel, and she certainly does that in this latest book with “the Saint,” a landmark hotel on the coast of Georgia. Traditions run deep here, but scandals run even deeper. “The Saint” is shorthand for the St. Cecelia, and if you grew up coming to this hotel, you were referred to as “a Saint”; if you came from the wrong side of the river, you were “an Ain't.” In the book we meet Traci Eddings, who was one of those outsiders; her family wasn't rich or connected enough to vacation at the Saint. She did work at the Saint, however, for one summer, and she married the boss' son. In this book we find her the widowed owner of the hotel, attempting to get the Saint back to its glory days, even though she's got a mountain of opposition standing in her way. She's got one summer season to turn it around, but then, new information about a drowning that happened long ago at the hotel threatens to come to light, and then a tragic death of one of the Saint's own brings Traci to the brink of despair. It's a love story, it's a mystery, and it's definitely worth a place on your TBR pile. Mary Kay Andrews is such a talented writer—she's a New York Times bestseller and her hit books are too numerous to name, but I'll try: The Homewreckers, The Newcomer, Hello, Summer, Sunset Beach, The High Tide Club, The Beach House Cookbook, The Weekenders, Beach Town, Save the Date, Ladies' Night, Spring Fever, Summer Rental, The Fixer Upper, Deep Dish, Savannah Breeze, Hissy Fit, Little Bitty Lies, and Savannah Blues, and I know there are many others that I left out. She is actually a former journalist for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and lives in Georgia; Mary Kay Andrews is actually a pen name she adopted in 2002—her real name is Kathy Hogan Trocheck—and (I find this so interesting!) her pen name is inspired by the names of her children, Mary Kathleen, so Mary K, and Andrew, so Andrews. I love details like that. I have lived in the South for 15 years this year, and I really resonate with Mary Kay Andrews' Southern-flavored stories, but they're relatable and totally compelling to anyone, anywhere, as her books at their heart deal with the human element. Summers at the Saint by Mary Kay Andrews

In this episode, the spotlight is on an individual whose journey epitomizes the term "girl power." But to be clear, she's a serious professional woman. Debbie Peterson is a former mayor, celebrated entrepreneur, and bestselling author. Her life has taken many twists and turns in the professional arena, each serving as a wellspring of inspiration. As an author, Debbie Peterson not only penned the best-selling Integrity 101 series, but she also authored the book--wait for it--The HAPPIEST CORRUPTION – Sleaze, Lies, & Suicide in a California Beach Town. In this book she unveils the corruption she uncovered during her tenure as mayor. Her blog on Psychology Today and her podcast, Corruption Chronicles, explore strategies by which citizens can fortify themselves against corruption and forge robust, representative governments. Her resonating message has gained traction within her country and worldwide as people yearn for a more promising path forward. Debbie and I, however, will delve into a myriad of captivating topics, including the notion of 'looking behind the curtain' to discern those who pull the strings in your world. After all, appearances can be deceiving. Join me in this engaging dialogue with Debbie Peterson—a conversation that promises to unravel layers of empowerment, integrity, and the often concealed dynamics shaping our reality.

What a plot! And it's all true. Debbie Peterson was urged by friends and neighbors to run for City Council and later for Mayor in Grover Beach, CA. Grover Beach would appear to be a sleepy coastal town. But as Debbie got involved and invoked some common sense (not to mention a forensic audit) it became clear that corruption was rampant. Debbie's curiosity sent her down a rabbit hole of kickbacks, lies and outright larceny. Throw in some drugs, an FBI raid and a local history of criminality, suicide, and you have the story of this small town. Debbie's book, is available on Amazon. Coming Soon! The Book. Bump In The Road, Stories of Courage, Hope and Resilience, an inspiring anthology of overcoming life's bumps. Because everyone needs a bit of inspiration. Learn more at Follow Bump on:

Bekah Bottone brings us a much-appreciated update on how her adopted hometown—Tamarindo in Costa Rica—has evolved in recent years. The Pacific coast surf town first came to prominence in Bruce Brown's 1994 surf movie, The Endless Summer II. At the time, Tamarindo was little more than a village, some great waves, and an airstrip where ground crew had to shoo the cows away so that planes could land. These days, things are different. With much better logistics, development for tourism, and a steady influx of digital nomads, expat retirees, and seasonal visitors, Tamarindo has grown up. This isn't a sob story about lost rural magic and the evils of tourism. For residents like Bekah, it's a positive change. When Bekah first spent time in Tamarindo, there were no pharmacies, no medical care, and even the smallest mishap could become a major emergency. Now, with modernization, the town is a much more rewarding place to live. (Soon, they'll even have their first traffic light!)A truly integrated Costa Rica expat (she gave birth to twins in the country, and has a wealth of experience of real-life challenges and rewards in the central American paradise), Bekah knows the highs and lows, and how to turn it all into a more fulfilling, happier, healthier life. Tune in as she shares her story with Jim Santos in this week's episode of Bigger Better World. Andy Ruffner was born just outside of Cincinnati - and other than leaving town for undergraduate study and a M.A. in Community Counseling from the University of Maryland, Andy spent several of his adult decades back in Cincinnati. He worked in Healthcare, Workplace Training, HIV prevention, most recently as Project Director for the Early Intervention Program at the University of Cincinnati's Department of Emergency Medicine. Andy also taught Sociology, Education and Counseling as an Adjunct Professor at Xavier University, University of Cincinnati and the Art Academy of Cincinnati. And then, in his early 50s, Andy and his now-husband David Weaver left all of this behind to live in a South Florida beach town. Andy did not move for the perfect next job or career advancement - Andy moved for a way of life. He relishes his new life in his beloved Hollywood Lakes neighborhood and currently serves as Director of Education for the World AIDS Museum in Ft. Lauderdale. Why I can't seem to get away from working with HIV/AIDS. How losses in my personal life gave me the courage to move to South Florida. Why I feel called to a life of community service. How the need for freedom and flexibility shape my life choices. https://worldaidsmuseum.org/about/ (https://worldaidsmuseum.org/about/)
September 21st, 2022. It's Whatever YOU Want Wednesday! Today we talked about Joe Biden telling Ron DeSantis to come visit the beautiful shoreline, Bryson Gray's new song about Martha's Vineyard, our parking spot debacle, Mark's new bag, and a whole lot more!
The libs of Martha's Vineyard pretend that the 50 illegal migrants whom DeSantis flew in actually “enriched their lives”- even though they kicked them out in less than 48 hours! Time for a plane load of them to land in Rehoboth, DE. We must mock the libs for their absurd virtue signaling on immigration because hypocrisy is who they are, but mockery enrages them. Also, Buck walked into two homeless guys throwing trash cans at each other this morning, broad daylight and cops right nearby, nobody seemed to care. This is what democrats have done to our cities. And Biden declares the pandemic over- but he was wearing masks outside 2 weeks ago!Follow Clay & Buck on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/clayandbuckSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

7 U.S. Beach towns that You Should VisitWhen you think “beach vacation,” you may picture yourself relaxing in the white sand on a Greek island or sipping a pina colada under a palm tree in the Bahamas. While there’s nothing wrong with dreaming of a luxurious international vacay, you may be surprised to find that you don’t have to leave the continental United States in order to enjoy cute beach towns. In fact, there are tons of options for a beach vacation that, for some U.S. residents, might just be a road trip away.In 2013, National Geographic listed Cannon Beach as one of the most beautiful places in the world, and it certainly deserves the title. The beach is famous for Haystack Rock, which sits 235 feet above sea level and is a protected Marine Garden, teeming with all kinds of wildlife. However, it’s not just its gorgeous shoreline that makes this beach town special; it’s home to a number of resorts and spas, such as the Surfsand Resort, which is nestled right on the shore and gives you a fantastic view of Haystack Rock. Those looking for activities in Cannon Beach can take a stroll into town to enjoy art galleries and quirky kite shops on the windy coast. And, if you are a traveler who won’t go anywhere without your beloved pup, you’re in luck: Cannon Beach prides itself on being a very dog-friendly town.Block Island is about 30 minutes off the coast of Rhode Island by ferry, and well worth the journey. It’s full of cute bed and breakfasts to make your home base while you explore all the activities of the quaint town. While you’re there, you can check out the Southeast Light lighthouse, eat at one of the more than 40 restaurants, and take a bike or moped to explore the coastline.Sure, Santa Barbara and Big Sur get all the love, but Pacific Grove is one beach town to visit for scenic beauty alone. It’s not quite as developed as many of the beach towns surrounding it, and many visitors marvel that the views on Ocean View Boulevard and Sunset Drive are unobstructed. Turn to Pacific Grove’s historic downtown area for shopping and dining, taste test at the local farmer’s market, or check out Point Pinos lighthouse — it’s the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast. For those excited to get outdoors, kayaking, scuba diving, and even Segway tours are all on the table.
After a one-week work-caused hiatus, Karen and Steve are back to talk about the parenting ... challenges when it comes to little kids and organized sports, and how they may have turned a parenting fail into a parenting win (to be determined). They're then joined by University of Chicago law professors Will Baude and Judith Miller, who share their own experiences dividing labor with two kids; Judith's difficult jury duty experience as a new mother; and why Chicago is ... a beach town?!?

On this episode of “Hot Off the Press” Chef Pete dishes with the queen of sassy Southern fiction, Mary Kay Andrews. The beloved, bestselling author stopped by Sunset Pointe while on tour to promote her latest project, The Beach House Cookbook: Easy Breezy Recipes with a Southern Accent, which released last month. A former journalist for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, The Savannah Morning News and The Marietta Journal, Andrews has penned 24 novels and sold an estimated 8 million copies worldwide. Her first novel, Every Crooked Nanny, was published in 1992 and Andrews went on to write ten critically acclaimed mysteries under her real name, Kathy Trocheck. However, Andrews is best known for her beloved Savannah beach reads inspired by her own Florida childhood and her love of Tybee Island, which include The Weekenders, Beach Town, Ladies' Night, Summer Rental, Deep Dish and Hissy Fit. She and her family divide their time between Atlanta and Tybee, where they cook up new recipes in two restored beach homes, The Breeze Inn and Ebbtide, both named after fictional places in her novels. But, no worries. You don’t have to own a beach house to enjoy these family recipes. All you need is an appetite for delicious, casual dishes, cooked with the best fresh, local ingredients and presented with the breezy flair that make Mary Kay Andrews’ novels a summertime favorite at the beach. From, potato salad, and pudding parfaits to her New Year’s Day Open House menu of roast oysters, home-cured gravy, grits 'n’ greens casserole, an early spring dinner of cherry balsamic-glazed pork medallions and bacon-kissed Brussels sprouts to Fourth of July buttermilk-brined fried chicken and lemon-cream cheese pound cake, The Beach House Cookbook will supply ideas for menus and recipes designed to put you in a permanently carefree, coastal state of mind all year long.
