182 - Turn Your Ship Around In this podcast episode, we're delving into the world of leadership, through the experience of a commanding officer plays in shaping the culture and morale of their ship. We will review the book It's Your Ship, Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy by Captain D. Michael Abrashoff. We're exploring how the principle of "ownership" can transform a low-morale ship into a thriving, successful vessel. Captain Abershoff allows his crew to take ownership of their areas of responsibility, allowing them to make decisions and solve problems independently unless it would cause significant monetary loss or harm to the ship or crew. This way, the crew members feel more involved and responsible, which increases their overall morale and productivity. We're discussing how he fostered a sense of community and camaraderie among the crew is vital in improving their morale and productivity. He enabled small gestures, like improving the quality of food or organizing beach barbecues, to make a significant difference in boosting the crew members' spirits. The commanding officer also encourages personal growth among his crew by helping them improve in their areas of interest and promoting them based on their performance. But leadership also means knowing what your company, country, ship, its mission and your boss needs for you to do. You should be aware of their goals in order for the ship to fulfill those goals and to create trust between you and the leadership. Once you have built that trust, you will have more ability to make changes for your team. We're examining some of the challenges and potential pitfalls of this leadership style. While it successfully turned the ship around, it created some animosity among other ship commanders who felt threatened or uncomfortable with the unconventional approach. The commanding officer reflects that he could have been more diplomatic in dealing with his counterparts and built bridges instead of alienating them. In conclusion, a commanding officer, family leader or any leader can significantly influence their team's morale and productivity. Fostering a sense of ownership, community, personal growth, and fun can profoundly impact the team's performance. https://www.mikeabrashoff.com/ https://startwithsmallsteps.com/182-turn-your-ship-around/ Jill's Links https://abetterlifeinsmallsteps.com https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsJill https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsAI https://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepspodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/SmallStepsPod Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com

In the first part of this two-part episode of The Idealcast, Gene Kim speaks with Dr. Ron Westrum, Emeritus Professor of sociology at Eastern Michigan University. His work on organizational culture and his contribution of the Westrum organizational typology model have been instrumental in understanding what makes a high-performing organization across industries. For decades, he has studied complex organizations from medicine to aviation to the nuclear industry.   In part one of their conversation, Kim and Westrum talk about the stark contrast between NASA’s highly experimental culture of the Apollo space program versus the highly compliance-driven culture of the US Space Shuttle program, and Westrum’s opinions on how to bring that experimental culture back. They also discuss the origins of the Westrum organizational typology model and some of the insights that led to it. Finally, Westrum shares what organizations should do when things go wrong in complex systems.   ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Ron Westrum is Emeritus Professor of sociology at Eastern Michigan University. He holds a B.A. (honors) from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago.   Dr. Westrum is a specialist in the sociology of science and technology and complex organizations. He has written three books, Complex Organizations: Growth, Development and Change; Technologies and Society: The Shaping of People and Things, and Sidewinder: Creative Missile Design at China Lake. He has also written about fifty articles and book chapters. His work on organizational culture has been valuable for the aviation industry and to medical safety, as well as to other areas of endeavor. He has been a consultant to NASA, the National Research Council, and the Resilience Core Group. He is currently at work on a book on information flow cultures.   YOU’LL LEARN ABOUT   Why much of the body of knowledge around safety culture came from sociology as opposed to psychology. How Westrum views the stark contrast in NASA between the highly experimental culture of the Apollo space program versus what has been characterized as a highly compliance-driven culture of the US Space Shuttle program. Insightful and useful opinions on what would be required to bring that experimental culture back in NASA. The origins of the Westrum organization typology model and some of the insights that led to it. Why Westrum views the notion of a technical maestro important to get the desired outcomes. Welcome to Difficult Conversations with Dr. Anthony Orsini. Today, I’m fortunate to have another amazing guest. Captain Mike Abrashoff is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a former Military Assistant to Secretary of Defense, William J. Perry. At thirty-six years old, Mike was the most junior officer in the Pacific Fleet when he took command of the near-worst performing ship, and twelve months later the USS Benfold was the best ship in the entire Navy. He established a set of management principles he calls the Leadership Roadmap. Mike is the author of three books. His first book It’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy, was a New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestseller, and his other two books, showed how Mike’s leadership principles have been put into action by organizations everywhere. Mike is a highly sought after keynote speaker for audiences to ramp up organizational performances. Mike tells us about his background, and the events that led up to his command of the USS Benfold. Even though things weren’t always successful for Mike, one thing that came out in his book is, “Every time things didn’t work out perfectly for him, he learned from his mistakes.” Dr. Orsini talks about how we can learn so much by watching people who are good at what they do and about how being a genuine person builds trust. Mike tells us about how he started by interviewing and getting to personally know every sailor on his ship which enabled him to connect with them. We hear an amazing story about a sailor and the rusty bolts. We learn about the most four powerful words in the English language that he said to his sailors, “What do you think?” Mike talks about getting over his own self-confidence and becoming more confident as a leader. He shares his advice on establishing trust if you’re in a leadership position. He tells us about having a disciplined process to get employees to want to stay, and Dr. Orsini makes a point to say, “Communication is a return on investment.” If you have to have a difficult conversation with your boss, Mike gives advice on how to start that conversation. We end with Mike telling us the most difficult conversation he’s ever had to have, Host: Dr. Anthony OrsiniGuest:Mike AbrashoffFor More Information:The Orsini WayThe Orsini Way-FacebookThe Orsini Way-LinkedinThe Orsini Way-InstagramThe Orsini Way-TwitterIt’s All In The Delivery: Improving Healthcare Starting With A Single Conversation by Dr. Anthony OrsiniResources Mentioned:mabrashoff@apgleadership.comMike Abrashoff LinkedinMike Abrashoff TwitterIt’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy by Captain D. However, what happens when people in the high ranked positions are a big reason why people are feeling disenfranchised down the chain? We look to our leaders to set the tone for the organization and help with disbursement of information as well as morale. Can you imagine William Wallace riding on his horse at the battle of Stirling, and instead of rallying his countrymen and talking about freedom, he says, “Eff morale!” In today’s episode, I will talk about how our culture in the fire service is being neglected and becoming stagnant and toxic, what we can do about it, and I will provide you with three simple things you can do every day to set the tone for a healthy culture. -- IGNITEd Firefighter Podcast Facebook Community IGNITEd Online Shop Braveheart: Speech at Stirling It’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ignitedff/message

In this Jam Session episode, I talk with Mike Kosikas, Director of Talent Development and Operational Excellence for a medical device company, as he shares his own three guiding leadership principles: 1) Quality of Life, 2) Compensation, and 3) Development Key Takeaways:Your employees don’t care about how much you know until they first know how much you care As a leader, you can directly impact quality of life - for better or worse Frequent check-ins with your team can positively impact their quality of life Compensation is closely tied to either building trust or losing trust When discussing compensation never get baited into comparisons      The toughest part about developing your people is trying to find where opportunity meets desire Developing your people involves a huge investment in time, level setting, and providing the path forward with the right resources There is more value in being viewed as a collaborator instead of a transactional leader Developing your employees involves knocking down barriers so that they can run faster Leadership Resources: On Leadership (https://amzn.to/39HgtSG) , by John Wooden  It's Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy, 10th Anniversary Edition (https://amzn.to/39DCVfv) , by Michael Abrashoff  Principles: Life and Work (https://amzn.to/2QNCUgn) , by Ray Dalio

Takeaways Understand How Your Prospect Makes Money: You already know how your company makes money and you already know how you make money once your company makes money. During the sales process, if you really dig in and figure out how your prospects make money, then you can sync your offering with their real incentives. It truly doesn’t matter what you sell if you can figure out how your offering impacts their revenue engine. That’s the key. Put Yourself Out There: Your network is not just going to build itself. You have to commit time in a given week or month outside your organization. Think about it just like you would building your pipeline. Who are the top 3-5 people you’d like to know? Reach out to them and ask for coffee or for lunch. Be genuine in your reasoning and figure out how you can provide reciprocal value. This effort you put in now will pay off in spades for a long time to come. Own Your Day: It’s been mentioned a few times on this show but understanding your own process and the things that make an impact or crucial to real success. Get organized and plan your day intentionally. Block on time on your calendar to do the things you know need to get done and don’t let the 5-10 minutes between meetings get wasted with goofing off because you can’t get any “real work” done in that short of time. Also, at the end of each day, recap the day and plan for what is going to happen the following. Leader Manager Coach Podcast

Welcome to another episode of the The Leader Manager Coach Podcast. On this episode of Leader, Manager, Coach Rob tackles the subject of Ego. How to fight your ego and build character and develop strength and humility. Ego is notoriously hard to define, but very easy to spot. Ego can mean an outsized sense of self importance, a malignant self absorption or an inherently entitled person or someone who believes they are better than others. Ego creates a lack of empathy a lack of humility and makes teamwork very difficult or even impossible. Understand the pride before the fall syndrome, and if things are going well remember to ground yourself as your own success is not down solely to yourself. Rob touches on why you should not to take yourself too seriously and learn to lighten up, and you will become a much better person. Discover how to channel your ego in the right way, to improve yourself and be humble. Learn how renowned coaches such as Bill Belichick use ego to benefit and channel it into a larger purpose, to win and why It is not about the narcissistic self. Rob discusses the need to fall in love with the process and love the plato, how to stop seeking constant results and understand that the process is what will elevate your growth. Growth doesn’t occur in the presentation of an ever growing line. But also be wary of swelling your ego, as it only identifies individuals and is destructive to the unified approach of team, we all know is successful. If we can control and manage our egos we will all be in a better place. KEY TAKEAWAYS As soon as your ego gets in the way, you loose. Ego is your inability to control your emotions. In Order to achieve success, take your eyes off of yourself and onto someone else. Serve others and build your value. It’s not how you win that counts, it’s the win itself, the result. Zone in and achieve. What we can’t do is master a physical skill at a drop of a hat, we live in a world of instantaneous information and gratification you have to learn to cherish misery. There’s nothing wrong with being the best that you can be, become egoless and achieve to the best of your abilities. If the Command and Control management style is like the British Armada then do dev managers need to be a lot more like pirate ship captains? Jeff Maxwell is an application architect with experience in Fortune 100 corporations, a longtime software developer and lifelong Oklahoma State Cowboy alumnus. Jeff was a prior guest of Hello Tech Pros on episode 2 where we discussed Productivity and how Jeff took a $1 million project and reduced the team size from 25 to 4 people by restructuring the requirements document into bite-sized tasks. Show notes at http://hellotechpros.com/jeff-maxwell-leadership/ Key Takeaways You're not a leader if you're not listening to your team. Leaders who are very non-technical in a very technical field can be challenging to work with if they are command and control driven and don't solicit feedback from the team. Developers are really good problem solvers. Leadership needs to identify those who are great problem solvers and empower them to make creative solutions. Managing developers is like herding cats being a captain on a pirate ship. Developers crave adventure. They don't want to follow rules that have no purpose or add value to the current situation. They respect leaders who have hands-on experience and lead from the front lines. Each ship and each captain had their own set of rules or Pirate Code. Can't light a candle after 9pm at night. If you're going to smoke or drink you must do it above deck after 8pm. Each man gets a vote. You must keep your pistols and cutlass (skills) ready for war. The person who forsees the first sail gets the best weapons. The captain is elected by the majority of the crew. The musicians get to rest on Sunday but have to take requests on all other days by the crew. The captain has to understand every aspect of the ship and what each role entails. Each dev team should create their own Pirate Code and swear an oath. Coding standards. SDLC process. Culture standards.   Resources Mentioned HTP-2 Scaling Down a Team to Get Results — Productivity Tuesday with Jeff Maxwell It's Your Ship: Management Techniques From the Best Damn Ship in the Navy by Captain D.
