In this episode of the Grow A Small Business Podcast host Troy Trewin interviews Chris Van Dusen from Solyco Capital shares his journey from being unexpectedly laid off in 2009 to building and selling three successful businesses. He reveals how he scaled a CBD company to over 120 employees, navigated the pressures of rapid growth and business exits, and now helps deploy more than $400M in investments through Solico Capital. Chris also breaks down the importance of consistency, leadership, culture, and having enough capital to survive tough business phases. The conversation is packed with real-world lessons on entrepreneurship, resilience, AI, scaling teams, and preparing a company for acquisition.  Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? Chris Van Dusen shares that the hardest thing in growing a small business is maintaining consistent output while managing capital wisely, as many business owners underestimate how much funding and sustained effort it truly takes to keep a business growing long term. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Chris Van Dusen shares that some of the business books that have helped him the most are Principles by Ray Dalio, Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss, and Loonshots, which helped him think differently about innovation, negotiation, and finding asymmetrical opportunities in business. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Chris Van Dusen recommends listening to podcasts like The Diary of a CEO for valuable business insights and leadership perspectives. He also shares that platforms like TikTok can be surprisingly useful for discovering short clips from business podcasts, helping entrepreneurs find new ideas, guests, and strategies before diving deeper into full episodes and long-form learning content. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Chris Van Dusen recommends using Anthropic's Claude and other AI tools to help grow a small business, explaining that AI can act like additional team members by improving efficiency, automating repetitive tasks, analyzing customer data, and helping business owners make faster and smarter operational decisions. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Chris Van Dusen advises that if he could go back to day one of starting out in business, he would tell himself to embrace the hardship, lean into difficult challenges instead of avoiding them, and trust that the tough moments are part of the journey that ultimately leads to growth and success. Cocodona 250 delivered some of the most inspiring performances in ultrarunning — and inside those performances are lessons every ultrarunner can use, whether you're chasing a podium, a PR, or simply trying to reach the finish line.In this episode, I break down the biggest takeaways from this year's Cocodona 250, including what Rachel Entrekin's historic overall win and Kilian Korth's men's course record can teach us about belief, preparation, execution, and resilience in long ultras.Because in races this long, fitness matters — but it's not the only thing that determines your result. Your mindset, aid station strategy, fueling plan, decision-making, and ability to problem-solve when everything goes wrong can be the difference between a breakthrough and a DNF.In this episode, you'll learn:Why “unreasonable” goals might be the exact thing that help you level upHow to pair big belief with the actions required to actually make it realThe two biggest keys to faster, more efficient aid stationsWhy sometimes a calculated risk can save your entire raceHow to know when to fix a problem immediately versus keep movingWhy you don't have to eat real food in long ultras if your fueling plan worksHow good weather can trick you into making bad race-day decisionsWhy a bad stretch early in a 100- or 200-mile race does not mean your race is overThis one is for any ultrarunner who wants to race smarter, believe bigger, and become harder to break when things get tough.SHOW LINKS:Want to be coached by me and my team to crush your next ultramarathon in our 1:1 coaching program? Book a free call here with one of our coaches to see if we are a good fit!Want to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Drop In CEO

In this episode, Deb Coviello sits down with Shaun Grove, CEO of Stride Fitness and seasoned fitness franchising executive. Shaun's career path is anything but conventional — from playing college and professional football, to practicing law, to becoming an FBI agent, to scaling Club Pilates from 11 locations to 150+ under Exponential Fitness. He shares what it really takes to build a franchise system that lasts, why the "grow fast or die slow" mindset can be dangerous, and why he believes the future of fitness lies at the intersection of cardio, strength training, and recovery — all under one roof. Whether you're a C-suite leader, an aspiring entrepreneur, or a fitness enthusiast, this episode is packed with hard-won wisdom about leadership, systems, and building something that truly scales. Episode Highlights: 9:01 — Acquiring Stride Fitness and Leading Through a Messy Transition Shaun describes how he took over Stride Fitness, which had 17 struggling locations, and gave franchisees a transparent choice: evolve, go independent, or exit. His willingness to help owners on their terms — working with landlords and lenders — set the tone for the kind of leader he is and the culture he was building. 11:47 — Why a Law Degree Makes You a Better Leader (In Any Field) Shaun reflects on how the critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills developed in law school have been invaluable across every role he's held — from litigator to FBI agent to franchise CEO. A reminder that foundational skills transfer far beyond the career path you started on. 17:58 — The Biggest Lesson in Franchising: You're in the Royalty Business Shaun delivers one of the most important insights in franchising: your success as a franchisor is entirely tied to the success of your franchisees. Selling territories is not the goal — getting those locations open, profitable, and sustainable is. This mindset shift is what helped Club Pilates grow responsibly and predictably. 25:38 — The Future of Fitness: Cardio + Strength + Recovery in One Place Shaun explains the vision behind the redesigned Stride Fitness model — a 2,000–2,800 sq ft boutique studio blending cardio, strength training, and recovery (massage chairs, compression therapy, red light therapy, and myofascial release) into a single membership. He argues that strength training is the missing piece in most fitness routines, especially for longevity. Shaun Grove is the CEO of STRIDE Fitness, a boutique studio concept blending cardio, strength, and recovery under one roof. A former attorney and FBI agent turned fitness franchising executive, Shaun previously served as President of Club Pilates — growing it from 11 locations to 700+ worldwide — before acquiring and redesigning STRIDE with a bold new vision for the future of fitness. This episode is the Season 1 finale of The Science of Creativity. Over the past year, I've released 52 episodes exploring the science of creativity through conversations with leading researchers, educators, artists, and performers, along with solo episodes on the creative origins of major innovations. In this final episode, I step back to synthesize the key insights from the season. Watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/_09yWr_Fc-o What emerges is a clear and research-based understanding of creativity: it is not a sudden flash of insight, but a process of exploration, iteration, and collaboration. Creativity is deeply social, shaped by cultural and organizational contexts, and closely connected to how we learn and develop expertise. Drawing on episodes featuring Teresa Amabile, John Kounios, Liane Gabora, and others—as well as historical case studies like Toy Story, the iPhone, and Monopoly—this episode brings together the central ideas that define the science of creativity. In this episode Why creativity is a process, not a moment The role of social interaction and collaboration How creativity connects to learning and education The idea of self-transformational creativity Why interdisciplinary thinking drives innovation What's next This episode also introduces a new podcast: The Science of Learning. In this upcoming series, I will explore how people learn, how teaching can be improved, and how we can design environments that foster deep understanding and creativity. Send us Fan MailTwo hundred episodes sounds like a number until you realize what it represents: 200 chances to sit down with real coaches and talk about what actually builds players. I'm Coach Ken Carpenter, and this milestone is my thank-you note to every coach listening on the way to practice, after a tough loss, or while looking for a better way forward. The biggest surprise from interviewing coaches across travel ball, high school baseball, college baseball, and beyond is how often the same themes repeat. Great coaching starts with relationships. Players don't buy into your system until they believe you care about them. Development beats winning when you zoom out far enough, because daily improvement in skill work, practice habits, and mental performance creates the kind of team that can handle pressure. And real team culture isn't created in a speech; it's built through consistency, clear expectations, and coaches showing up the same way every day.I also share the five lessons that keep coming back after 200 conversations: relationships first, long-term player development, consistency builds culture, great coaches keep learning, and baseball teaches life. Along the way, I read listener reviews, celebrate what this community has become, and recognize our sponsor, the Netting Professionals, who support programs one facility at a time.If you get value from Baseball Coaches Unplugged, subscribe, share it with another coach, and leave a rating and review so more coaches can find these baseball coaching tips and player development strategies.Support the showFollow:  X | Instagram @Athlete1Podcast Website - https://www.athlete1.netSponsor: The Netting Professionalshttps://www.nettingpros.com

In this episode of the Contractor Growth Network podcast, Logan sits down with Jef Forward—founder of Forward Design Build Remodel—to unpack what it really looks like to build a remodeling business from the ground up… the hard way. Jef shares the unfiltered story of his first five years in business—projects going months over schedule, losing money, taking on debt, and nearly reinforcing every negative stereotype about contractors. But instead of quitting, he used those failures as the foundation for what would become a 40+ person design-build firm. From digging out of financial holes (having just $0.16 for every $1 owed) to learning how to price correctly, hire the right people, and step into leadership, Jef walks through the exact inflection points that transformed his business. He also shares how joining a peer group, embracing sales training, and building a leadership team allowed him to finally step out of the day-to-day and start thinking about the long-term future of the company. If you're feeling stuck, underpaid, or overwhelmed in your remodeling business, this episode is a powerful reminder that the breakthrough often comes after the lowest point—and that building the right systems, team, and mindset can completely change your trajectory. Key Takeaways Failure Early Can Be Your Greatest Advantage → Jef's first two projects lost money, ran late, and delivered poor client experiences. → Those early failures forced him to rethink everything—and ultimately built a stronger foundation. You Can't Outwork a Broken Business Model → Working more hours didn't fix his problems—it just prolonged them. → Real progress came from learning how to price correctly and understand financials. Know Your Numbers (Or They'll Control You) → Discovering he had only $0.16 for every $1 owed was a turning point. → Understanding financials like profit, WIP, and job costing changed everything. Hiring Isn't About Talent—It's About Fit → Early hires were based on skill, not alignment, leading to poor team cohesion. → Building a strong culture became the foundation for long-term growth. Sales Is About Asking Better Questions, Not Pushing Harder → Jef initially resisted sales training due to fear of being "salesy." → Learning how to guide conversations and uncover client needs transformed his close rate. Delegation Is the Gateway to Growth → Growth didn't happen until Jef stopped doing everything himself. → Hiring designers, estimators, and project teams allowed him to focus on leadership. Recessions Reward Decisive Leaders → During 2008, Jef made early, tough decisions that kept the business alive. → Lean operations actually made the company more profitable during that time. Your Role Must Evolve as the Business Grows → From carpenter → operator → leader → coach → Each stage requires different skills and mindset shifts. Transparency Builds Stronger Teams → Sharing personal struggles (like his wife's cancer diagnosis) created trust and unity. → Giving the team ownership and permission to fail led to one of their best years. The End Goal Isn't Just Growth—It's Sustainability Without You → Jef is now focused on building leaders and planning his eventual exit. → Long-term success means the business can thrive without the owner.

ESSAY: My Biggest Lesson From The No Kings Protest This Weekend

I spent three hours at the Minnesota State Capitol this weekend with somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 people — and it changed something in me. This wasn't a political rally. It wasn't a hate rally. It wasn't a festival of grievances. The No Kings protest was something I haven't felt in a long time — a crowd of grown-ups who know who they are, fighting for something better, without a demagogue telling them what to believe. In this episode, I share what I witnessed, what it meant to me as a former evangelical pastor and lifelong Republican, and — most importantly — the single biggest lesson I took away from the weekend.

I'll let you in on a small secret...Ten years ago, the Service Design Show was never even supposed to be a podcast. And somehow here we are. We've officially hit episode 250. Its been a decade since I published that very first interview. Somewhat of a cliche but, I never expected to reach this milestone. I still remember the early days very well when I was struggling with a "split identity". Torn between running a service design agency and following this pull toward content creation. It took me a good three years to finally take the leap, but looking back, it was the best decision I ever made. As you'll notice, this episode is quite different. Usually, it's my job to ask the questions, but in this one, I'm the one answering them.I wanted to share some of the messy, behind-the-scenes lessons from the last decade. They are quite personal but who knows maybe you can use them as tools in your own practice. We're diving into things like my cheat code to gain clarity, the power of friction, what I've learned about building real connections and how "remarkable" things are often built through consistent, often unglamorous work. And yes, I even answer some hot questions from the community.I have to say that recording this episode was both difficult and incredibly rewarding. So, if you've been on this journey with me, I'd love for you to join me for this reflection. This milestone isn't just mine, it's ours. By the way, if you prefer our regular interview format, feel free to skip this one. I won't judge! We'll be back to our normal schedule next week.Thank you again for your attention, your trust, and for being part of this movement.Be well,~ Marc --- [ 1. A few days ago, I ended up in the hospital after a run with atrial fibrillation (AFib) — and while I'm doing okay now, the experience shook me up and taught me some lessons that I think every runner needs to hear. In this episode, I'm sharing exactly what happened, what the doctors told me, how I'm doing now, and the biggest takeaways I'm walking away with from the whole experience. This one is personal, but I also think it's important. Because as runners, it's really easy to convince ourselves to push through things, ignore warning signs, or downplay what our body is trying to tell us. This experience reminded me that getting help when something is wrong is not weakness — it's wisdom. The Netflix show Stranger Things has become a global cultural phenomenon. In this solo Eye2Eye episode, Dr. Harbir Sian shares an unexpected but powerful lesson inspired by Stranger Things. But the lesson learned may not be what you might expect. Fans of the show may expect something related to the comradery exemplified by all the friends fighting evil together. Instead, using the resurgence of Kate Bush's iconic song Running Up That Hill as a real-world case study, Harbir reflects on the importance of patience, consistency, and trusting that effort often pays off on a timeline we can't predict. This episode isn't about TV shows or pop culture—it's about doing the work, taking the shot, owning your value, and recognizing that impact and success can arrive long after the work is done.Key Takeaways for Listeners1. Your timing is not the universe's timing You may put in years of effort before seeing results—but that doesn't mean the work wasn't worth it.2. Consistent effort compounds, even when it feels invisible Kate Bush's decades-old song became a global hit 40 years later. Impact doesn't always come immediately.3. You miss every opportunity you never try for Progress only happens when you take the shot—publish the content, start the project, have the conversation.4. Own what makes you different Your personality, perspective, and voice are assets. Lean into them instead of blending in.5. Own your work—literally and figuratively Know your value, protect your rights, and charge appropriately so you can show up fully.Key Quotes from the Episode“Your timing, my timing, is not the same as the universe's timing.”“If we don't try, if we don't put out that content, we'll never achieve that goal.”“Kate Bush made more money 40 years later than she did when the song first came out.”“Own your uniqueness—lean into it and leverage it.”“If you're good at something, don't do it for free.”“You might already be planting the seeds for something you haven't even imagined yet.”Who This Episode Is ForOptometrists and healthcare professionals building long-term careersEntrepreneurs frustrated by slow or delayed growthCreators and leaders questioning whether their effort is “worth it”Anyone needing motivation to keep going—even when results aren't visible yetFinal ThoughtThis episode is a reminder that meaningful success often arrives quietly, unexpectedly, and much later than planned—but only if you're willing to keep showing up.Love the show? Send us a textI thought I was recording a tidy little year-end recap. A highlight reel. A greatest hits moment. Easy.Instead, I found myself staring at this year of conversations and realizing something way more uncomfortable and way more interesting. Certain themes kept showing up. Across guests who had nothing in common. Across topics that should not have overlapped. And somehow, those themes quietly rewired how I think about goals, ambition, self-compassion, and what I'm willing to accept in my own life.So this episode is not a highlight reel. It's a reflection on the three biggest lessons this podcast taught me this year and why they might matter for you too.One of them completely changed how I look at “stuck” goals and the stories we tell ourselves about why something isn't possible yet. Another challenged the way I think about self-compassion and why being kind to yourself does not mean settling or giving up. And the third forced me to take a hard look at what I'm letting into my brain every single day and how much low-quality noise we've all been normalizing.I share the moments that cracked these lessons open for me, the guests who sparked the shifts, and the questions that stopped me mid-spiral more than once this year. This episode is part reflection, part pattern recognition, and part invitation to stop carrying goals and beliefs that feel heavy, obligatory, or vaguely punishing. If you're heading into a new season thinking about what you want next or wondering why certain goals just don't light you up anymore, this one might land closer to home than you expect. What's Inside:The patterns I couldn't unsee after reviewing a full year of conversationsWhy some goals quietly drain you before you even startA reframing of self-compassion that removes shame without removing choiceWhat happens when you stop letting low-quality noise rent space in your brainThis episode isn't about doing more or fixing yourself. It's about noticing what keeps repeating and having the courage to question it. I'd love to know which theme made you pause or which one you're still chewing on. Most business owners move from one year to the next like they're jumping between moving trains - no pause, no reflection, no integration. But if there was ever a year that deserved a real look under the hood, it's this one. In this episode, Sarah and I sit down for our annual "State of the Union" conversation. A candid, honest, sometimes vulnerable breakdown of what actually happened this year behind the scenes. The wins, the losses, the lessons, the surprises, the stuff that stretched us… and the stuff that steadied us. You'll hear: • The patterns we noticed across hundreds of clients that point to a major shift happening in the expert industry. • The identity work we relied on personally to navigate uncertainty, pressure, and unexpected curveballs. • The mindset traps that quietly drained our momentum and the small internal tweaks that changed everything. • Why reflection is one of the most strategic (and underrated) tools for growth… and how to do it without judgment. • The questions we're asking ourselves to set up 2026 with more clarity, alignment, and grounded confidence. This isn't a highlight reel. It's the real reel. If you want to start 2026 from a place of intention-not panic, pressure, or "new year, new panic buying"-this episode will give you the perspective and practices to do exactly that.   Interested in Elite?
