She spent the last twelve years in New York City working commercially and recently returned home to Austin, to pursue a graduate degree from the University of Texas. This transition has become a catalyst for her most recent ruminations on the concepts of home, family, and identity. Working primarily with photography, text, and sound, Gomez's practice examines our notions of the ‘home' as a myth through reflections on her parent's relationship to the land. Her interest lies in the meeting of this trinity of images, text, and sound and how the three can work together as a spiritual triad to create an experiential memory-scape of place.Gomez has exhibited both in the U.S. and internationally most recently showing at Women and Their Work as a Red Dot Artist in Austin, TX, sTudio 7 for the Rockaway Artists' Alliance in Fort Tilden, NY, and for The Print Space Gallery in London, UK. Jordan Buschur is an artist, educator, and curator based in Toledo, Ohio. Her paintings focus on collections of objects ranging from stacked books to interiors of drawers, all united by a system of value based on mystery, sentimentality, and a matriarchal connection. Buschur received an M.F.A. in Painting from Brooklyn College, the City University of New York. Her work has been shown in numerous locations, including exhibitions with the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (Grand Rapids, MI), Center for Book Arts (NYC), and Field Projects (NYC). She participated in residencies at the Wassaic Project, Chashama North, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, and the Vermont Studio Center. Awards include the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award and the Kimmel Foundation Artist Award. Her work has been featured in print in New American Paintings and UPPERCASE Magazine, and online with The Jealous Curator, Young Space, and BOOOOOOOM, among many others. She is a co-founder of Co-Worker Gallery and has curated exhibitions at Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space (NYC), Spring/Break Art Show (NYC), and the Neon Heater (Findlay, Ohio). Buschur was the Director of the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and currently teaches drawing at the University of Toledo. "My paintings imply a human presence through depictions of accumulated collections. Contents of desk drawers, stacks of books, packed boxes, and objects on display, are united by systems of value shaped by mystery, sentimentality, and the matriarchal connection. Each painting focuses on the oscillation between personal resonance and public view, reality and invention, fixed meaning and open interpretation. I'm interested in the assignment of non-monetary significance onto objects as an inherently interior and idiosyncratic act. In this way, the paintings are portraits as I meditate on the details (both mundane and magical) of the accumulated stuff of friends and family (and my own things too). Simultaneously, the collections point towards the material weight of modern life, the anxiety of consumption, and the endgame of anonymous personal effects. Looking through the lens of inheritance, accumulations of sentimental objects can link to ancestors, while also becoming a burden of junk. A well loved thing, so deeply felt by one, shapeshifts in meaning when passed to a new owner and generation."   LINKS:  www.jordanbuschur.com   @jordanbuschur   Artist Shoutouts: Crystal Phelps Natalie Lanese Lindsay Akens Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez Charley Friedman Angeles Cossio Dana Fritz Margaret Bohls Jac Lahav Maia Cruz Palileo     I Like Your Work Links: Apply to our Winter  Exhibition Catalog: https://www.ilikeyourworkpodcast.com/submitwork   Join the Works Membership ! https://theworksmembership.com/   Watch our Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ilikeyourworkpodcast   Submit Your Work Check out our Catalogs! In this episode with visual artist, Dan Perkins, we dive into a discussion around the evolution of his painting practice.  He shares about how over the recent years, through all the turmoil of global events, he started to turn more inward.  This shift impacted his paintings, moving them away from being solely focused on formal concerns, to being more interested in the psychological landscape.  We discussed the power of meditative practice and how art making, along with art viewing, can offer glimpses into a different state of consciousness.  --------------------------------- Dan Perkins lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received his MFA from American University. His paintings channel architectural motifs that connote space: crossing through a threshold, gazing through a window, passing from one plane to another. However the spaces depicted sit in an ethereal haze, where color and form are primary. Scale, time and space are all negotiable, up to the viewer to frame and understand. He has shown at Deanna Evans Projects, Sperone Westwater, Kutlesa Gallery, Hashimoto Contemporary, Launch F18, Mana Contemporary, and elsewhere. His work is held in the collections of Capital One, Fidelity Investments, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the Katzen Museum of American University, as well as in many private collections. Bridging Plant Medicine, Process + Meaning in the Work | Erin Loree

I’ve been wanting to weave plant medicine and psychedelics into the conversation for a while now and I can’t think of someone I would’ve rather done this with than Erin Loree (who’s luscious abstract paintings are to DIE for, by the way). I’m eternally grateful for her openness and wisdom. Not to mention, I had the BEST time talking with her. In our conversation, Erin shared about what it’s been like for her to speak about ayahuasca publicly, how she’s navigated the topic within the exhibition world, the correlations she’s found between healing, ceremonies and the creative process itself, how she uncovers meaning in her work and tons more. Whether you’re interested in plant medicine or not, there are beautiful perspectives for all artists in what she shares-- and some fascinating stories about her adventures in the jungle, too. About Erin Erin Loree is Canadian painter based in Toronto. Her work explores themes of transformation, inversion, and duality, with an emphasis on the process as a journey of discovery. She completed her BFA at OCAD University in 2012 and has since exhibited nationally and internationally in Toronto, Montreal, New York, San Francisco, and the UK, with a recent solo exhibition at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in Owen Sound. Loree was awarded the Robert Pope Artist Residency at NSCAD University in Halifax and has participated in residencies in Toronto and in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle. Loree’s work has been featured in YNGSPC.ca, MOMUS.ca, CBC Arts, the Toronto Star, Beautiful Decay, Booooooom, and Huffington Post. She is represented by Peter Robertson Gallery in Edmonton. Thinking about taking the leap into becoming a full-time artist? Erin Loree did just that and through a crazy twist of fate, landed in Kim Dorland’s old studio in Toronto. Erin talks about how she approaches her large paintings, color palette and materials. From artist residencies in Peru, Plant Medicine, and observing the inner and outer world around her, she shares great insight into how she creates her beautiful work.  Erin is from Gananoque, Ontario. She completed her BFA at OCAD University in 2012 and received a Certificate of Advanced Visual Studies from OCAD’s Florence Program. She has exhibited nationally and internationally including Toronto, Montreal, New York, San Francisco, and the UK, with a recent museum solo exhibition at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in Owen Sound, Ontario. She has work in a number of collections including Toronto Dominion Bank, Holt Renfrew, and Imago Mundi. Loree was awarded the Robert Pope Artist Residency at NSCAD University in Halifax, and has participated in residencies at Artscape Youngplace in Toronto, and Sachaqa Centro de Arte in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle. She has been the recipient of numerous awards including the 2012 Drawing and Painting Medal, and Nora E. Vaughan Award from OCAD University, as well as an Ontario Arts Council grant. Loree’s work has been featured in YNGSPC.ca, MOMUS.ca, CBC Arts, the Toronto Star, Beautiful Decay, Booooooom, and Huffington Post. Born in 1985 in California, Anna Valdez’s interest in cultural formation and collective consciousness began in her hometown. Exposed from a young age to a uniquely Californian cultural milieu, her proclivity for collecting and crafting a poignant and meaningful visual vocabulary took root during time spent sharing in the traditions and environments of people within her community. Her fascination with the ways in which cultural identities intersect lead her to pursue a career in sociocultural anthropology. It was on an archeological dig in Ireland that Valdez first discovered her skill for art making. Valdez was encouraged to keep a sketchbook of the site, creating scale drawings and maps. Visually reinterpreting these “abandoned sites” allowed Valdez to explore the connection between anthropological and artistic methods of cataloguing and record-keeping. Today, working across painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, and digital media, Valdez examines the relationship between material and cultural identity. Valdez incorporates articles found in domestic spaces such as plants, textiles, vessels and keepsakes into her work as a method of storytelling. Her colorful work invites the viewer to consider objects as emblematic of personal and collective experience, shifting between still life and portraiture. Anna Valdez received her MFA in painting from Boston University in 2013. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States. Valdez’s work has been featured in Juxtapoz Magazine, New American Paintings, Booooooom.com, and Daily Serving. Her work has recently been exhibited at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Masur Museum of Art, the Danforth Museum, Boston University Art Galleries, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco, and Parts Gallery in Toronto Canada. instagram.com/missannavaldez https://annavaldez.com

"I grew up in the suburbs of Toronto surrounded by shopping carts and old ladies in headscarves. That’s all I knew for the longest time. Housing developments, strip malls, backyards and Jewish summer camp. It was comforting, one of those good childhoods and I loved it. As I got older I caught the notion of other things, other places I wanted to see. I fled straight for the city, and then kept going till I managed to get as far away I could. At some point I started taking photos. Photos of shopping carts and old ladies in headscarves, people wandering around strip malls. It didn’t matter what city I was in, I’d find them, these people that seemed so familiar to me. I’d get so close to them with my camera they would be forced to talk to me. They’d ask me why and I would tell them that I thought they were beautiful."   Resources:   Michelle Groskopf   Shawn Theodore   Guy Bolongaro   Download the free Candid Frame app for your favorite smart device.
