Strategic tools can help you navigate organisational and market complexities. But how do you even begin to make sense of it all?In this episode, Simon Wardley, the creator of Wardley Mapping and one of the most profound thinkers and influencers in strategy, explains the power of mapping complex ecosystems. He speaks on how building resilient organisations goes beyond clever tactics and requires a deep understanding of the landscapes you're navigating. He highlights how most organisations still struggle to truly understand their customers, and emphasises why it's crucial to realign strategies, foster a shared language, and enable cohesiveness to create true “value.”For leaders, this conversation serves as a call to rethink how you approach both organisational structures and the strategies needed to stay adaptable in a constantly changing landscape.Simon brings a wealth of experiential knowledge in strategy, having contributed to the growth of some of the biggest organisations worldwide. In this podcast, he delves into the evolution of technology, organisational structures, and strategy, with a particular focus on the impact of AI. He challenges our fear of rapid technological advancement by sharing how tech's true development follows a more gradual process, ultimately leading to sudden bursts of change - a more nonlinear growth. He also explores other critical themes like - the evolution of organisational structures, referencing his explorers-villagers-town planners model, the need to have strong guiding principles, and also shares why the engineer is the true architect of a technology. So, for anyone seeking a roadmap to navigate complexity correctly, this conversation is a must-listen. Tune in. Key Highlights

Pete Flint, General Partner at NFX and founder of Trulia, joins us for an expansive conversation on how AI is reshaping the foundations of entrepreneurship, platform economies, network effects, and defensibility strategies.Drawing from his deep experience as both a founder and an investor, Pete breaks down what it means to build in a world where CAC is difficult to change and requires expanding LTV by designing invisible, agent-powered experiences and adopting “stackable” approaches to product development.Speaking on the low barriers to entry for startups, he highlights why speed now trumps precision, saying, “There is no prize for being right, but there is one for being fast.”This conversation is a must for anyone navigating the fast-moving world of AI, platform innovation, and startup strategy. What does it mean to build a startup in a world of frictionless tools and unpredictable technological shifts? In this episode, Pete, one of the world's most prominent internet entrepreneurs, helps us unpack how the dynamics of company-building are being transformed - not just by AI, but by new patterns of behaviour, demand, and value creation. We explore consumers' hyper-personalised requirements and what that means for founders navigating shifting entry points and stackable business models. He also speaks on cultural foundations and how an organisation's ecosystem affects outcomes. For anyone grappling with how to lead or build in this dynamic landscape, this episode offers a take on what truly matters.Key Highlights

#119 - Working with Source: Acknowledging the Creative Hierarchy with Tom Nixon

Boundaryless Conversations Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2025 53:01

In this episode, we welcome Tom Nixon, author of Work with Source, to explore the powerful yet often overlooked idea of “source” - as the person who first conceives and commits to a creative initiative - and the impact such a role has on organizations. Drawing from his extensive experience advising founders and mission-driven projects, Tom helps us unpack what it truly means to hold the role of source - beyond conventional leadership, and as he puts it, “being the author of the story that unfolds.” Together, we explore how organizations can enable a deep human dimension behind all authentic ventures, and work towards a truly regenerative and evolutionary way of organizing. While many conversations around leadership focus on structure, roles, or decision-making, this episode looks at a deeper assessment of where creative initiatives truly begin - and how they should maintain coherence as they evolve. Tom Nixon introduces us to the subtle but powerful idea of “source” as the unique origin point from which meaning, direction, and integrity flow.We explore how the source perspective can help us navigate complexity, and why the source is simply not a “genius hero” figure, as we presume. He also helps us unpack more regenerative, emergent, and resilient ways of working together. So, for listeners looking to understand the creative dynamics that often hide behind hierarchical organizational structures - and why honouring the human in a project is highly strategic - this conversation is a source of guidance. EP #316 - Creative Legacy - A Solo Show featuring your host, Susan Burrell As we enter into the month of April and Spring I am pausing and sharing my thoughts about our theme for the month of April. Legacy. What is a legacy? And what about us is unique and often noticed by our friends and family? How are we remembered when we are gone?  Many of us have our own ideas about what a legacy is or can be and l will touch on those ideas in this episode. What I am also exploring and sharing in this podcast is the idea of what it means to leave behind a "Creative Legacy."  I love my job because I get to interview so many fascinating people and many of them are authors.  I interviewed a poet and author last year, Jim Ellis about his newly released book, Breadcrumbs, Volume 2, Poems & Prose Found Along the Sacred Path. Jim's insights about his life, the life of those that touched him and his universal message are all beautifully expressed in his book through beautiful prose and poetry. It is uplifting and engaging, and like the Hansel and Gretel fairytale, the analogy here is that breadcrumbs shall be left along the path so that there is a clear trail back to what you left behind or what you are meant to find. Jim passed away earlier this year and I am dedicating this episode of Empowering Chats to his memory and the creative legacy his left behind. To listen to my previous interview with Jim where we talk about his book please visit: https://empoweringchatswithsusanburrell.podbean.com/e/5-10-24-jim-ellis-susan-burrell/ To purchase Jim's book, Breadcrumbs, Volume 2 visit Amazon: https://a.co/d/fVKNB20 To learn more about how I show up in the world visit: SusanBurrell.com

What does it take for organizations to truly harness the power of AI - not just as a buzzword, but as a transformative force for strategy, culture, and execution? In this episode, Anindya Ghose - Professor at NYU Stern, and one of the world's leading voices at the intersection of AI, economics, and platforms - joins us to explore what it means to adopt AI intentionally and ethically.Anindya presents his “House of AI” framework to cut through the AI hype. This grounded, end-to-end framework helps organizations align their data, models, and ethics for meaningful impact. He also shares his insights on how AI is shifting the nature of management itself - and why the true differentiator in an AI-enabled world will be people, not technology. We go beyond surface-level AI conversations to explore what it really means to embed it within an organization - not just as a tool, but as a force that reshapes how decisions are made, work gets done, and leadership is defined.Anindya is a globally recognized AI advisor who has transformed the journey of over 60 companies worldwide. As the author of Tap and Thrive, he also brings a rare blend of corporate insight and academic depth, helping us break down how AI can elevate both business and human potential. We explore how AI is pushing organizations to rethink core assumptions, what are the cultural and structural implications of AI, how does AI take shape in organizational structure, and why it's important to also see AI as a powerful positive force. This is not an episode to miss, as we explore the tensions around AI and how they can be turned into meaningful opportunities.Key Highlights

Send us a textBefore we dive into uncovering the language of the Universe, I'd love for you to pause, take a deep breath. Exhale. And remember. Thich Nhat Hanh wrote, "Our breath is the bridge connecting our body and our mind. Returning to our breathing, and following it all the way through from the beginning to the end with awareness, brings body and mind back together, and reminds us of the miracle of the present moment."When was the last time that, while the outside world hollered for your precious attention and energy - distracting - annoying, that you caught an inkling, felt a deep knowing that if you didn't shut all that crap out and pay attention you were going to miss something important?Maybe what you would've missed was a message from a loved one that passed on years prior. Or it was a whisper not to enter an intersection on that yellow light, or it was a song on the canned music at the grocery store or mall that has always held deep meaning for you, or it was a reminder that you didn't lock your home; or that you haven't heard from your daughter in too long, or a reminder to schedule that vet appointment for your dog. What came to your mind? In that moment you witnessed the Bridge; a message was sent, seen and understood. STILL through all that outside noise, you heard the message! Acknowledging that helps it to happen again. And again. In less subtle ways, too. That juicy in-between space is not just on display at times when a set of supernatural conditions are met, like, say, a full moon, Halloween, summer solstice, sunrise, the passing of a loved one, etc. The Bridge (or the veil as some prefer to call it) is always there. What's different about those woo-sanctioned moments is we go into those times EXPECTING a message, anticipating the delivery of some deeper knowing, divine guidance, or communication with an ancestor. We are pre-primed to witness the supernatural. It's the energetic equivalent of setting our radio dial to a clear station. Well, bring that open mind to each fresh day! Give it a try, and see if you experience more of it. I wonder if that's the importance of morning minutes? Making a daily practice of sitting in silence to hear direction? Confirmation? That feels true. I'll check in with you on this next week, and let's see if we can normalize hearing from the Universe. This week, we turn to the familiar across the globe - the symbols, stories, and signs that seem to resonate across time and geography. These hints to the language of the Universe even come in the form of melody. Ever heard a song that felt like an old friend you lost track of for a bit? Seen a bunch of references to rabbits, that spotted one out on a walk and wondered if the animal represented some deep knowledge? What to read/listen/watch NEXT!The Present, Curious Cat Episode on BuzzsproutHave you tried the GoodPods app yet? The Torah's description of the Tabernacle begins with its first two items of "furniture" - the Ark and the Ark Cover. Though we usually think of these as being one item, the Torah treats them as two. Why is that? But this is not the first ark mentioned in the Bible (and neither is Noah's ark, which is a completely different word). Do you know what the first ark is that is mentioned in the Bible? And what is the most important feature of the Ark? And how does the Ark cover picture God's divine pattern for mankind? We answer these and many other questions in this lively conversation. What separates organizations that thrive in uncertainty from those that struggle? In this episode, Luca Dellanna - management consultant, researcher, and author - explores how companies can move beyond theoretical decision-making to ensure real-world execution and resilience. In this episode, Luca unpacks key concepts like ergodicity, antifragility, and the role of behavioral dynamics in shaping organizational effectiveness. Stating how “Decision-making is only as good as execution,” he emphasizes the need for organizations to create systems that surface problems early and drive real adaptation. He also challenges the notion that architecture alone can ensure antifragility, suggesting that qualitative insights, cultural alignment, and leading by example are all essential in building adaptable organizations. In this episode, Luca provides a reality check on common management approaches, indicating why many organizations fail to turn strategy into action. He highlights why leadership by proclamation is ineffective without visible commitment, how organizations often create misaligned incentives, and why cultural shifts require more than just top-down mandates. Drawing from real-world examples, he also shares how true organizational change comes from daily, repetitive micro-level decisions.Tune in, as we discuss how to avoid the cost of irreversible consequences, and instead structure for long-term wins that build anti-fragile organizations prioritizing survival over performance. Send us a textThe most valuable commodity on Earth isn't gold or uranium or fresh air and clean water, it's Free Will. In the last month or so I've gone deep into the angelic realms with some celestial guides. One common thread between all angels, guides, Spirit, God, Jesus, Israfil, Buddha, ancestors and any other being is that each human has Free Will. In order to be of assistance, or charm our dang lives, we have to ask. In split second, life or death instances, our Higher Self gives an immediate response to forces that wish to intercede on our behalf, knowing this version of us most likely will take too long to respond and be saved. But those dramatic instances aside, I've noticed in different ways from a myriad of groups as well as individuals, including some in the woo community, we are being lulled into giving away. From the jokey, "Jesus take the wheel," to the Meteor 2024 bumper stickers, to sessions with shady shamen that involve hallucinogens, to Super Bowl ads, some meditations, alien ideation, and more, the messages were unrelenting and unsettling, and I feel called to highlight this valuable commodity. There's a professor at Stanford who believes none of us has Free Will.  If we receive breadcrumbs from the Universe through dreams or synchronicities and choose to follow them, is that still using Free Will?Add to the mix the mystical week I've had that led me to drive back to the pet grooming business to deliver a message, and I'm certain this will be a juicy episode.Let's get into it.Show Sources and Next Reads/Watches/Listens:A Stanford Neuroscientist that Believes Free Will Does Not Exist, YouTube, BigThink interview with Robert SapolskySynchronicities from the Library of Thoth, YouTubeSuch an intriguing conversation about myths and free willDetermined: A Science of Life without Free Will, Robert Sapolsky, Amazon.comSynchronicity: What is it, does it exist, and if so — how can you recognize it in your life?, Sylvia Clare, Medium.com Have you tried the GoodPods app yet?
