On this episode, Julie Lewis returns to talk with Laura more about her book, Still Positive: A Memoir, and her experience as a 39-yr HIV survivor. Julie is a mom, advocate, and co-founder of the 30/30 project, which she created with the encouragement of her son, multi-grammy winner Ryan Lewis, of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Julie was infected with HIV in 1984 but not diagnosed until the early 1990s when she was given three to five years to live. After years of silence about her disease, she found an unlikely community of friends to fight alongside and began using her story to make a difference. Her experiences as a woman living with AIDS offers insights about grief and loss, caregiving, spirituality, and the importance of community in the midst of tragedy. On today's episode, we dive deeply into the work she did with the HIV Speakers Bureau and the community that she helped create to support her and the many people and their friends and families struggling with the effects of HIV and Aids. You can learn more about Julie, her book, and her non-profit at stillpositive.com and 3030project.org.
On this episode, Laura talks with Julie Lewis, author of the new book, Still Positive: A Memoir. Julie is a 30-year HIV survivor, and the book tells her fascinating and inspiring story. She is also the mother of multi-grammy winner, Ryan Lewis, of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and with his encouragement, she founded the 30/30 Project, a non-profit whose mission is to bring access to quality, affordable healthcare to those who need it most. Laura and Julie talk about her diagnosis of HIV early in the AIDS epidemic, which she received from a blood transfusion. The impact of it on her and her family's lives, her concerns as a mother raising three young children, and the prejudice she faced early on because of the lack of understanding and fear surrounding the disease. Julie became an early advocate and educator about AIDS, bringing awareness to communities and helping many people. We also talk about her impressive accomplishment with the 30/30 Project, which she founded to celebrate having survived HIV for 30 years. The goal of building 30 medical facilities in areas throughout the world where the need was greatest was impressively accomplished in just five years with the help of many organizations including Construction for Change. Julie's remarkable story is at its heart a mom's story of love, hope, courage, and defying the odds, and I'm very happy to share it with you here. You can learn more about Julie, her book, and her non-profit at stillpositive.com and 3030project.org.

Melanin levels define levels of allowed hypocrisy in a country that claims to be one nation under God. What mood were you in before/after the song? Frustrated and agitated but overjoyed by #GEORGIA! Would you be willing to Karaoke or sing-a-long? I am Vocal on this episode! Please specify the lyrics that motivated you: All of them. However, if you could please watch the videos... Here's Macklemore's White Privilege II Pulled into the parking lot, parked it Zipped up my parka, joined the procession of marchers In my head like, "is this awkward? Should I even be here marching?" Thinking if they can't, how can I breathe? Thinking that they chant, what do I sing? I want to take a stance 'cause we are not free And then I thought about it, we are not "we" Am I in the outside looking in, or am I in the inside looking out? Is it my place to give my two cents? Or should I stand on the side and shut my mouth? "No justice, no peace, " okay, I'm saying that They're chanting out, "black lives matter, " but I don't say it back Is it okay for me to say? I don't know, so I watch and stand In front of a line of police that look the same as me Only separated by a badge, a baton, a can of Mace, a mask A shield, a gun with gloves and hands that gives an alibi In case somebody dies behind a bullet that flies out of the nine Takes another child's life on sight Blood in the streets, no justice, no peace No racist beliefs, no rest 'til we're free There's blood in the streets, no justice, no peace No racist beliefs, no rest 'til we're free Damn, a lot of opinions, a lot of confusion, a lot of resentment Some of us scared, some of us defensive And most of us aren't even paying attention It seems like we're more concerned with being called racist Then we actually are with racism We want to dress like, walk like, talk like, dance like, yet we just stand by We take all we want from black culture, but will we show up for black lives? By far the worst song we've covered and the maddest we've gotten on air! Today in Music Hell, we talk about Macklemore's twee cringefest "Spoons" and the corny rapper's history of diminishing his attempts to talk about serious issues by tripping over his own self-serving unawareness. Other topics include Macklemore hanging out with cops, his 9/11 conspiracy tweet, and how we wish he would "Mackle less." We had to hear this awful song so now you do too. Sorry! Email us at MusicHellPod@gmail.com to request a song or send fan mail. Rate and review us, that also helps us out. For the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis song, see White Privilege II. White privilege (or white skin privilege) is the societal privilege that benefits white people over non-white people, particularly if they are otherwise under the same social, political, or economic circumstances. Academic perspectives such as critical race theory and whiteness studies use the concept to analyze how racism and racialized societies affect the lives of white or white-skinned people. According to Peggy McIntosh, whites in Western societies enjoy advantages that non-whites do not experience, as "an invisible package of unearned assets".[1] White privilege denotes both obvious and less obvious passive advantages that white people may not recognize they have, which distinguishes it from overt bias or prejudice. These include cultural affirmations of one's own worth; presumed greater social status; and freedom to move, buy, work, play, and speak freely. The effects can be seen in professional, educational, and personal contexts. The concept of white privilege also implies the right to assume the universality of one's own experiences, marking others as different or exceptional while perceiving oneself as normal.[2][3] Some scholars say that the term uses the concept of "whiteness" as a proxy for class or other social privilege or as a distraction from deeper underlying problems of inequality.[4][5] Others state that it is not that whiteness is a proxy but that many other social privileges are interconnected with it, requiring complex and careful analysis to identify how whiteness contributes to privilege.[6] Other commentators propose alternative definitions of whiteness and exceptions to or limits of white identity, arguing that the concept of white privilege ignores important differences between white subpopulations and individuals and suggesting that the notion of whiteness cannot be inclusive of all white people.[7][8] They note the problem of acknowledging the diversity of people of color and ethnicity within these groups.[6] Writers have noted that the "academic-sounding concept of white privilege" sometimes elicits defensiveness and misunderstanding among white people, in part due to how the concept of white privilege was rapidly brought into the mainstream spotlight through social media campaigns such as Black Lives Matter.[9] As an academic concept that was only recently brought into the mainstream, the concept of white privilege is frequently misinterpreted by non-academics; some academics, having studied white privilege undisturbed for decades, have been surprised by the seemingly-sudden hostility from right-wing critics since approximately 2014.[10] Definition History of the concept Applications in critical theory Global In the United States In South Africa In Australia In New Zealand See also References Bibliography Further reading External links Last edited 2 days ago by InternetArchiveBot RELATED ARTICLES Color blindness (race) sociological term for disregard of racial characteristics White guilt One of the psychosocial costs of racism Social privilege social theory that special rights or advantages are available only to a particular person or group of people Content is available under CC BY-SA 3.0 unless otherwise noted. Grammy-winning Seattle double bass player (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis), composer and vocalist, Evan Flory-Barnes, is a sorcerer. Able to concoct large, swelling scores with symphonies following his precise baton or manifest nuanced, delicately woven narratives on his solo upright bass, the Emerald City virtuoso offers elegant, honest, approachable and magical music. With deep influences in hip-hop's boom-bap, classical music's delicacies and rock ‘n' roll's power, Flory-Barnes is a fire, centralized and for any to be made warm. Known for his bass versatility, Flory-Barnes recently began stepping out center stage – singing “Move On Up” to an audience of thousands during this summer's Timber Fest! and leading an orchestral performance of his Acknowledgement of a Celebration at Seattle's Neptune Theatre. The composer also showcased his latest symphonic work, On Loving the Muse and Family, at Seattle's On The Boards to four consecutive sold-out shows.

In 2012, Mary Lambert was working three restaurant jobs when her life changed. An aspiring singer-songwriter, cellist, spoken word artist, and graduated with a Bachelors of Music Composition from Cornish College of the Arts, she had begun to establish herself around Seattle, performing slam poetry and fusing a talk-singing style into her intimate performances. She received a phone call from a friend who was working with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on their debut album, The Heist. Macklemore and Lewis were struggling to write a chorus for their new song, a marriage-equality anthem, called “Same Love”. Lambert had three hours to write the hook, and the result was the transcendent chorus to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ triple-platinum hit “Same Love,” which Lambert wrote from her vantage point of being both a Christian and a lesbian. Writing and singing the hook led to two Grammy nominations for “Song Of The Year” and “Album Of The Year”, as well as the iconic performance alongside pop legend Madonna at the 2014 Grammys. Mary then signed with Capitol Records, where she released her debut album “Heart on My Sleeve” produced by Eric Rosse (Sara Bareilles, Tori Amos) and Benny Cassette (Kanye West). Her smash single, “Secrets” launched to No. 1 on the Billboard Dance charts, and was certified RIAA Gold in 2015. The New York Times called her debut album “refreshing and severely personal”. Mary Lambert isn’t your typical pop artist. Inspired by confessional folk singers as well as spoken-word performers, she is a brutally candid writer who deals directly in her art with her past traumas. Lambert was raised in an abusive home, attempted suicide at 17, turned to drugs and alcohol before being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and survived multiple sexual assaults throughout her childhood. With a list of horrors, you wouldn’t expect Mary to be disarmingly joyful, but she charms effortlessly, and the effect on her audience is bewitching. She describes her performances as “safe spaces where crying is encouraged. Beautiful and brutally honest, Mary Lambert's poetry is a beacon to anyone who's ever been knocked down―and picked themselves up again. In verse that deals with sexual assault, mental illness, and body acceptance, Ms. Lambert emerges as an important new voice in poetry, providing strength and resilience even in the darkest of times.
Andrew Joslyn ditched classical music, joined a band called Handful of Luvin' and made his mark helping Seattle area musicians score their music. His big break came when he scored some of the biggest hits by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Andrew discusses the hard lessons he learned in making sure he earned proper royalties, and the arrangements he did for Kesha. He also talks about his brother, comedian Chris Kattan, and the Case File podcast he composes for.

Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Mary Lambert spoke with Jacquari for a preshow interview before her concert at White Oak Music Hall in Houston. In the interview, Lambert discusses her personal struggles, being an openly gay artist and receiving the call to work with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Plus she shares her thoughts on Justin Timberlake and new music that she's working on.
There's a good chance you’ve come across one of her photos without even knowing it. Nesrin Danan aka “Blackprints” is a 22 years young photographer who has shot for some of your favorite artists like G-Eazy, Blackbear, Olivia O’brien and she has created content for companies such as Bose, M&M’s, Urban Outfitters, Postmates, Uber and more. None of this was part of the plan, it kinda just happened. She had taken a film/photography class in high school in Corvallis, Oregon because she was slightly interested. Needing to take pictures for her class she ended up at a Macklemore & Ryan Lewis show at the Flat Tail Music Festival in 2012 and was instantly pulled in. By the time she reached college at Portland State University, she was balancing being a full-time student, having a social life, going to the gym and even flying out on weekends to NYC or festivals to work. What’s different about Nesrin than most photographers is you’ll come across a post of her on her own Instagram. She’s fully confident with sharing her personal life with her followers and wants to come off as someone who keeps it real. Aside from her photography passion she’s a huuuuge foodie and can be caught at Urth Cafe or Greenspan’s Grilled Cheese while in LA. One thing’s for sure - she knows her worth and isn’t going to budge no matter the circumstance. — You can follow Nesrin here: Instagram: @Blackprints (https://www.instagram.com/blackprints/) Twitter: @Blackprints_ (https://twitter.com/blackprints_) YouTube: Blackprints (https://www.youtube.com/user/lochnezzmonster) Website: (http://www.nesrindanan.com) Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for new interviews (and more) weekly: http://bit.ly/2zprpon Follow us on Soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2hcSBws Subscribe to iTunes: http://apple.co/2yE0u9l Follow us on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2j82AHF Follow Bobbbaaaay on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2Ap24ce Twitter: http://bit.ly/2hj6Ljmoto
moodhouse#2 - Trans Law passes, Macklemore + Ryan Lewis, MSP Venues closing, MSP scene truths by Moodhouse
This week we’re joined by LA based singer/songwriter Jessica Rotter. Jessica’s voice has been heard across multiple genres, from movies, TV shows and commercials to backing vocals and collaborations with other artists—all in addition to her original songs. The list of artists she has worked with includes names such as Daft Punk, Carole King, Alicia Keys, Sam Smith, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and more. Jessica is just as comfortable using her voice in a major feature film (credits include Pitch Perfect 1 & 2 and Frozen) as she is performing one of her original songs live. Following the success of charting #1 on HypeMachine with her mashup of Stay/Animal with Emily Colombier, Jessica’s most powerful and ambitious project to date; the full length release of Plains is just around the corner. Highlights: - Jessica is a big believer in everyone shining their light - Jessica appreciates creating moments and journeys which are not linear - When you’re being authentic, stories come naturally and they don’t need... Florida-raised, LA-based Kris Angelis’ first album, The Left Atrium, was awarded Best Female Album of 2013 by the LA Music Critics Awards. She has toured with Songs & Whispers, opened for Tyler Hilton and has been invited to join the Extreme Tour in the US to bring music to underserved communities and youth. She has played at the New Orleans House of Blues, made the finals in the Belk Southern Musician competition, played at Sundance, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, SXSW and NAMM 2016. She has just released her newest project, the Heartbreak Is Contagious EP with songs written with and produced by Morgan Taylor Reid and Alexander Cardinale. And she joins us this Friday with songs from the new EP, and an old favorite or two. Jessica Rotter is an LA-based singer with a unique musical history – her grandfather wrote songs for musical icons like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. The family talent rubbed off early; Jessica was 4 years old when she started singing. Which may be why her songs and her voice are achingly beautiful and have been heard in movies like Perfect Pitch 1 & 2 and Frozen as well as TV shows and commercials and in backing vocals and collaborations. The list of artists she has worked with reads like a who's who of the music industry today: Daft Punk, Carole King, Alicia Keys, Sam Smith, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and others. She has released a new album, Plains, following the success of charting #1 on HypeMachine with her mashup of “Stay/Animal “. We were at the lauch party for the album and we ahve the songs - and some of the behinds the scenes stories. Tune in for a chat with a TV star from a Hollywood music family and a blockbuster debut album.

We discuss everything from stories of her sisters farm, advice she would give anybody and stories of Elkton, MD bars and more. Thanks to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (ft Mary Lambert), Cake, Jim Henson and Melanie Safka for the music this week.
The crew is back at Ishlabs to recap the summer. We start with the most successful albums of the summer, giving props to Big Sean, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Jay-Z and Kanye. We also talk about the song of the summer ("Blurred Lines") and the Robin Thicke vs. the estate of Marvin Gaye legal controversy. If you haven't listened to the Big Sean "Control" single you should check it because we go in on the Kendrick verse that has every rapper in the world writing response tracks. We get into whether it is a diss or a call to arms? After some real bad K.Dot impressions, we review the MTV Video Music Awards. Everything from Miley's Asian man butt to Justin Timberlake's epic performance. Is MTV relevant to thirty-plus hip-hop heads? Listen and find out! All that plus One Direction vs. Brooklyn, Brooklyn as the new Seattle and whether hispter hood is the new grunge. Is 2 Chainz really Dave Chappelle? What is up with Drake and tank-tops? Are Joey Fatone and Chipotle made for each other? Special thanks to our listeners from Brooklyn Radio and Mixcloud. Props to our extended fam Buendia Productions, the EFFWHUTUHEARD podcast, Brooklyn Stable and the Combat Jack Radio Show! Who shot ya, mate!!!
