Aurelio Paviato is my guest on this month's Conversations with Close. Aurelio is a well-established, fulltime pro in Italy; he performs at corporate functions and has his own one-man show, Storie di un Artigiano di Illusioni. He is a past FISM champion in close-up, and has had a long association with such greats as Arturo Ascanio, Juan Tamariz, Roberto Giobbi, and others of the Escorial group.I found a kindred spirit in Aurelio because both of us have a magic aesthetic heavily influenced by Dai Vernon. We discussed his background, and took a deep dive into several of the routines in his book, Studies in Deception (see my review in the February 2025 MichaelClose.com Newsletter) During all of it, I felt as if I was talking to an old friend.

This episode deals with the life of Charlie Miller. Charlie was a close friend to Dai Vernon and Faucett Ross, and one of the few magicians of his time who could present all of the material from the book, Expert AT the Card Table by S.W. Erdnase. He had a very interesting life. Even though he was known for his fantastic sleight of hand, he was equally adept with apparatus magic. Enjoy! On this very special episode of Establishing your Empire I host Richard Turner. Richard has been declared one of the world's most influential and inspirational figures of modern times, and is described by peers and audiences around the globe as the playing card manipulator who creates “Astonishment Beyond Comprehension.” Richard Turner is a world-renowned playing card mechanic whose skills are unparalleled. Turner's skills leave audiences baffled beyond belief as he manipulates a deck of cards like no other human being on this planet. As a global celebrity he is a recognized Fortune 500 keynote speaker with clients that include Apple, Facebook, AT&T, IBM, the U. S. Air Force, and scores of others. In addition to these prestigious corporations, Richard has entertained millions of people worldwide, including notables like Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Colin Powell, and boxing legend Muhammad Ali. Richard fooled Penn & Teller on their TV series “Fool Us” faster than anyone before and has earned a Sixth Degree Black Belt Master's Ranking in Karate. Richard is also the CEO of the tech company “52 Productions” co-founded with Adam Cheyer, a tech entrepreneur best known as the creator of SIRI. 52 Productions' mission is to develop a series of unique, conversational-interface gaming apps. But, what makes all of Richard Turner's accomplishments truly incredible is that he is blind, and has been since childhood. Thankfully, he discovered at an early age that being blind empowered him with an ability to develop an enhanced sense of touch that, when he picked up a deck of cards, changed his life forever.

My guest is Magician and Mentalist - Mr.Bernie Shine.Bernie Shine is a magician and performer who has been a prolific entertainer since he first appeared on the scene in the 1970's.Shine was a law student when he first started performing regularly at the Close Up Room at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. The young magician was taken under the wing of some of the more experienced performers, including legends such as Dai Vernon, Francis Carlyle and Senator Clark Crandall.
Martin Lewis is one of magic's finest performers, and one of its most ingenious creators. His effects can be found in the repertoires of magicians around the world. There has not been a big book of Martin's magic since 1985, when Martin's Magic (written by Eric Lewis) appeared. Soon, the long wait for a new book will be over; Making Magic, a marvellous compilation of Martin's material will be available in May. I've known Martin for many years, but because he lives in California and I never have, our paths only crossed at the occasional magic convention. (The most recent time was a few years ago at the IBM/SAM joint convention in Louisville.) I was happy to have the opportunity to catch up and learn more about his early years in England, his time in L.A. at the Magic Castle, his work at the Magic Cellar (beneath Earthquake McGoon's jazz club in San Francisco), his entry into performing on cruise ships, and why and how Making Magic came into being. In addition, Martin shares some great stories about Harry Anderson, Dai Vernon, Eric Lewis, and others. We had a lot of fun chatting. Wayne Dobson was born in Leicester and was just a youngster when he discovered the fun of magic for the first time. At just 16 years of age became the youngest-ever member of the Leicester Magic Circle. Throughout his teens he worked on his magic becoming a real master and having great fun performing to friends and family, and the occasional show at his local youth club. "David Nixon, Pat Page, Roy Johnson and Ken Brooke were all great influences on me." Wayne was also inspired by another brilliant man of magic, Dai Vernon. "I think it was because of Dai Vernon's influence that I became so interested in close-up magic. He was revered, and rightly so, by all the modern-day magicians and illusionists. He was one of the great innovators. The 'Cups and Balls' routine was one of his specialities." At just 16 Wayne was demonstrating great flair and originality and started to pick up local engagements and club work, on a semi-professional basis. In 1977 he was a joint first prize winner in the close-up competition at the IBM British Ring Convention. This led to his television debut on BBC TV's Blue Peter. At just 21 he decided to become a professional magician. Wayne was achieving great things on the notoriously difficult British club circuit. His original style of magic with fast talking patter and hilarious split-second one liners was having its effect. A run of tours with some of the UK's top performers ensued; Wayne opened for Freddie Starr, Shirley Bassey and the Shadows. The TV companies picked up on Wayne's magic and he performed on a number of top shows. In 1988 accompanied Engelbert Humperdinck on a comprehensive American tour which saw him entertaining in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Hollywood, Los Angeles, Atlantic City and Chicago. The tour was a tremendous success. Wayne was blessed with a rare talent for blending great humour and great magic, evidenced by the high regard accorded him by fellow entertainers. Dean Martin was a fan and took him to Las Vegas.. In 1988 he was diagnosed with MS, his future was redefined in a moment; his world became inverted and uncertain. In the face of such adversity most would be tempted to give it up, quietly fade away into the unknown. Wayne didn't give up, he saw it as a defining moment, he rose to the challenge, he continued to work, and he discovered his real and true friends like Joe Pasquale. Within the fraternity of magic he was regarded as an icon, frequently lecturing to the numerous societies up and down the country, his natural wit and ability to create wonderful magic effects found continuing favour. He was still a gifted entertainer and now he was to become an inspiration to others. In this interview Wayne looks back at his career at the highs and the lows. He talks about how to make a name for yourself in the magic industry, creativity and how anyone can be creative. He also talks about his hopes and dreams and also talks about his new series of books which should be published in December 2021.
If you have any interest at all in card magic, I'm sure the name Roberto Giobbi is familiar to you. He is a prolific author, a frequent contributor to magazines (his column in Genii has run for fourteen years), a lecturer, a teacher, and an experienced performer. His new book, Sharing Secrets: The 52 Most Important and Practical Strategies in Magic, is fantastic. In it, Giobbi has solved a problem I have struggled with for thirty years: how to teach the theoretical principles of magic in a way that can be utilized and internalized. The last time Roberto and I had a “deep dive” discussion, we talked about his lecture on Dai Vernon. (That interview appeared in M-U-M.) This time we took an even deeper dive. I learned some things I never knew (like why the original version of Card College was spiral bound). We had a great time discussing subjects we both love, and I think you'll enjoy listening to it. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/michaelclose/support

Check out the April Vanish Magic Magazine: https://vanishmagic.com FEATURE TOPIC: Creativity III - How Magicians Apply Creativity To Their Shows Connecting the dots and putting it all together In the past two episodes on creativity, we’ve talked about how we capture ideas and our own personal rules for creativity. The idea in steps 1 and 2 is to just let ideas run wild, record them and validate them with your own rules. If your original objective through all this was to make a virtual show. You probably now have a list of tricks and concepts you are more than excited to share. So let's dive into that. But FIRST: One VERY Important aspect of CREATIVITY that we haven’t yet discussed is EXPLORING AND LEARNING COMPLETELY unrelated interests-- seeing what other industries are doing and how it can apply to magic You CANNOT drive down the same road for 20 years and expect to see new things. Take roads less travelled. Putting it all together: Remind yourself of your objective Make a new virtual magic show?Design a new website?Design a sales deck for virtual shows? Remind yourself who you are and what you want to say. How does it all connect? I remember first starting out with my virtual show - it was a display of tricks. No message and overtime I figured that messaging out. But I have also played with the structure of my virtual show and the flow of tricks. The first thing I look at is what props are needed before and after, what am I left with after a trick is done? Can those props/items be connected to the next piece of magic? TRANSITIONS IN MAGIC ARE IMPORTANT! A true sign of a POLISHED MAGICIAN can be found in their TRANSITIONS! Show Structure The second thing to look at is the overall flow of the show. Start strong, end strong. Let everything slowly build in the middle. How can be creative specifically with your TARGET AUDIENCE? Finally, think about your target audience. Does everything fit with them? Connect with them? Relates with them? This is where I’ll go back through and punch up all the little details or even remove something! Important ideas that fall under the category of Ethos before we move on. 1. Simplicity. Einstein said (in effect), “Everything must be made as simple as possible. But not simpler.” If you focus on the important things, then the important things will get done. Sometimes, you have to procrastinate on purpose. Brian Tracy speaks on this often – there are ALWAYS going to be things that you have to put aside to get the most important things done. And it's your decision what gets done or not. In the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey calls these important things “Quadrant 2” Activities. These are the things that are important, but not urgent. It might take a few hours to sit down and write out your goals, your mission in life – and that's very important. But it's not pressing on you. So the time usually gets eaten up with urgent but less important things. If we don't grab a hold of this and take control and choose to focus on these important but not urgent activities, we may never write our goals down or get these ultra important things done. It is possible to live out your entire life without having accomplished a single goal. My life began to change when I started taking the time to SCHEDULE these important activities, making them a priority. Because even though they are not pressing, they really are the most important things to living a fulfilling life. 2. Relaxation/Relaxed effort. The old-school magician Dai Vernon and others have called this the economy of motion. Being mindful of what you are doing – physically or mentally, and using exactly the right amount of energy it takes to get the job done. Whether you're correcting your children, arguing with your spouse, or closing the refrigerator door, there is an appropriate amount of energy necessary to expend to get the job done. Don't underestimate this amount of energy, and not give enough. And don't overestimate what it's going to take, and overdo it. (Like slamming the cupboard door closed instead of simply closing it.) The reason this idea is important to your ethos, is when you begin to practice this technique, things begin to get easier for you mentally and physically. There is only one art, the art of being human. This relaxed effort is seen in painting, boxing, playing music, baseball, dancing, and everywhere else. When a boxer punches at his opponent, it is controlled and focused. They don't just ball up their fist and take the hardest swing they can – in fact, this is less effective when it's done this way. The energy is not focused, balance can be thrown off. Balance is a delicate thing. When piano players play, they are not slamming down on the keys as hard as they can – it's all about relaxing, tapping into gravity, and working on the technique required to product music that can be effect, that can actually change emotions. No matter what you do, you can relax and tap into the forces at work in the universe and take advantage of them – and it all begins with the economy of motion and expending the appropriate amount of energy for the task. 3. Solitude and Meditation. I've never been good at meditation. I've sat there bored, listening to music that I just don't like, and trying to make myself feel like I'm doing something healthy. I did it for days, and it just caused me stress. Two things happened. I read the book Stillness is the Key, by Stoic writer and philosopher Ryan Holiday – and he said that he

Who Books That? with Harrison Greenbaum (Presented by the International Brotherhood of Magicians)
Harrison interviews Suzanne, winner of Close-Up Magician of the Year from the Academy of Magical Arts, and finds out how a love for puzzles and a job in computer programming eventually led her to a career in magic, the key to sincerely connecting with your audience, how a moment with her son led to the signature piece that fooled Penn & Teller, and the one piece of advice Dai Vernon gave her (and why she ignored it). With surprise guests Max Maven, Jonathan Levi, Catherine Wilson, and Suzanne Haring.Presented by the International Brotherhood of Magicians.
Richard Turner is the best card mechanic (card shark) in the world and one of the best close-up magicians. He has entertained millions of people around the world and won several prestigious awards for his achievements in magic. The highly-rated documentary about him, which is called Dealt is one of the best documentaries that I've ever seen. Richard's life, his achievements, his adventures are very inspiring, it is impressive that one man can achieve so much. And there are many more remarkable things about him that we didn't even mention yet. In this conversation, Richard shares fascinating stories about his life, about the ways a card mechanic can control the deck, how easy it is to cheat in a live poker game, some of the stories about how the mob has approached him with offers to work for them in some private poker games. We also talk about his remarkable work ethic, his approach to perfecting a skill. How the legendary Dai Vernon tricked Richard into developing seemingly impossible moves and techniques. And there's so much more. Note that the first 30 seconds is the audio taken from the official trailer of the fantastic documentary about Richard Turner - DEALT. I highly recommend it: https://amzn.to/2ZUqIzc The YouTube version of this episode features a lot of visual material demonstrating Richard's technique, so I'd check it out if you get a chance and make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to stay informed about new videos https://www.youtube.com/RunchuksPoker?sub_confirmation=1 And if you'd like to receive my key takeaways from each latest podcast episode, subscribe to my newsletter https://www.runchukspodcast.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/RunchuksP iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/mt/podcast/the-runchuks-podcast/id1511439478&ls=1 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3noSXKdBtcqqGWOpE4tsWR Overcast: https://overcast.fm/itunes1511439478/the-runchuks-podcast Google Podcast: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZGJlYW4uY29tL3J1bmNodWtzL2ZlZWQueG1s Richard Turner: http://www.RichardTurner52.com DEALT - the movie: https://amzn.to/2ZUqIzc Timestamps: 00:00:00 Extract from DEALT official trailer 00:00:32 Introduction 00:02:36 Richard Turner, THE card mechanic 00:05:26 Perfect practice makes you perfect 00:08:09 My job is to control the outcome of the game 00:10:28 Dai Vernon 00:12:27 Fixing the game in front of everyone's eyes 00:16:10 What an average card mechanic is able to do 00:20:24 Signaling 00:23:38 Casino security 00:25:16 Richard's take on Phil Ivey case 00:26:06 Organized crime and rigged games 00:32:41 An offer from the Middle East 00:35:04 Mr. Diamond full story 00:47:18 Why Richard always turned down the offers, tips, and gifts 00:49:49 Lawyers and bankers rigged game story 00:55:03 Is the deck marked? 00:56:14 Business card story 00:58:26 Touch analyst for the US Playing Card Company 01:00:37 Why Richard Turner is a superhuman 01:02:45 Practical advice to avoid being cheated 01:05:47 Shuffling machines 01:08:09 Players shuffling 01:09:29 Technologies 01:10:17 Hustlers who got used 100% 01:12:12 Full dedication to mastering a skill 01:13:21 Shuffling the cards for 1h and… 01:13:49 RichardTurner52 01:14:21 A film about Richard Turner film 01:15:00 Shark Showdown and Texas Showdown 01:17:21 Extreme lifestyle 01:21:37 Not missing a workout session in 49 years 01:22:13 Shuffling blank cards at funerals 01:23:28 Taking a step further 01:26:12 I want the end result but it's the journey that I love 01:29:44 Creating new card mechanic techniques and unique style 01:34:42 Dai Vernon obsession 01:35:31 Fooling Mr. Jerk in front of his eyes 01:42:10 Invitation to cheat by their rules 01:44:54 Don't learn how to play a song, learn all the scales 01:46:26 It can't be done until someone does it 01:48:36 How Richard Turner practices 01:51:44 When the practice is finished? 01:52:33 Why the second deal is so hard 01:55:06 One of the most fascinating people that I know of 01:58:43 More on the upcoming movie 02:00:57 I'm not going down 02:02:39 Hand injury right before going to Penn & Teller: Fool Us 02:05:58 A full year for the thumbnail to grow back 02:07:11 Not even injuries or surgeries can stop Richard Turner 02:14:24 Doing a show right after a cardiac ablation procedure 02:17:31 Won the match but lost the war 02:18:01 Fishing huge fish (not poker related) right after shoulder surgery 02:19:48 Bringing Richard Turner to a new audience 02:20:39 Runchuks card mechanics story 02:23:39 Wrapping up and always cut the deck

Von Lance Burton stammt die großartige Aussage "Perform as many times as you can in front of people you don't know", denn sie trifft den Punkt. Von ihnen stammt die Aussage "The very best method for a trick is the easiest method, and it is the method that should be used", der unsere Moderatoren jedoch nicht gänzlich zustimmen. Hierzu passend sagte Vernon auch "Be natural". Part 2 of my analysis of whether "The Professor", David Frederick Wingfield Verner, was a great performer. I ferreted out some of my own ignorance with a perusal of the literature. The evidence is there...you decide.
I recently answered an internet question about the greatest magicians and then was challenged by a mentor of mine about the answer I gave. Part one of a two part retort delves into the life of David Frederick Wingfield Verner, aka. Dai Vernon, aka. The Professor. Was he one of the greats? You decide...
I am so very sad to report on the passing of yet another of the greats in our art. Johnny "The Great Tomsoni" Thompson was my guest on several episodes of the Magic Newswire's Spirit of Magic Podcast. This is one of my favorites and the earliest. Please listen and remember in his honor! Johnny was much more than an extremely well respected performer and one of the funniest magicians out there. He was also a much sought after magic consultant and worked with such performers as Lance Burton, Penn & Teller and Criss Angel. In the first interview below, Johnny talked about his career as well as his experiences with other performers including Herb Zarrow, Jay Marshall, Marshal Brodein, Francis Carlyle, Paul le Paul, Paul Rosini, Joe Bergen, Cardini, Channing Pollock, Carl Balentine, Al Koran, Dai Vernon and Charlie Miller.
Episode 57: Pop Haydn, 7 time “Performer of the Year” for the Academy of Magical Arts and a certifiable genius, sits down with Elliott to discuss magic and story, character development and backstory, the Magic Castle in the 70’s, and so much more. This episode is dense with gold. Head over to Patreon.com/MagicalThinking to see BTS pictures from the episode, including Dai Vernon’s joke napkin. Enjoy!
Episode 25: Paul Gertner, has a lifetime of stories to share in this shorter-than-usual episode. The conversation includes stories about meeting Dai Vernon and performing with Eddie Fechter, as well as, how he involves technology in his magic and his recent successful appearance on Penn & Teller's Fool US. Enjoy!
"I find it puzzling, don't you? The rabbit, I mean. Very puzzling." As a magician, I am accustomed to people asking me about rabbits... As a writer, John Gaspard is accustomed to people asking him about magic. His wonderful Eli Marks Mystery Series features magician and reluctant amateur sleuth, Eli Marks, and his cranky Uncle Harry, also a magician and a debunker of magic scams. Soft-boiled, humorous, and taking place in the -- dare I say? -- enchanting world of professional magicians, this series is a treat. Let's do the important stuff first. Poof! -- John has pulled a free short story for you out of his hat! You can download it here, or listen to the incomparable Jim Cunningham read it here. John also makes movies! Check out his film blog, Fast, Cheap Movie Thoughts, which riffs off the name of one of his own books on movie making, Fast, Cheap and Under Control. In the interview, he recommends a book by William Bayer, Breaking Through, Selling Out, Dropping Dead and other notes on Film Making. You can keep abreast of Johns' many activities on Facebook. John gives a shout-out to fellow Minnesota writer Judith Guest (of Ordinary People fame, but also the writer of suspense novel, The Tarnished Eye) as well as mystery writer Lawrence Block, a long-time favorite of mine as well. He also talks about the great work The Amazing Randi has done in debunking frauds. Other magicians mentioned in this conversation: Dai Vernon, Lance Burton and Eugene Burger, and of course Harry Houdini. And I want to give a shout-out myself to Henery Press, which is doing a great job of publishing soft-boiled and cozy series, especially ones that are a little outside the lines, at a time when other publishers are ending many long-time series. They also publish Gigi Pandian's Jaya Jones series, another favorite of mine. If you missed my conversation with her, you can check it out here. This was such a fun conversation. Enjoy! -- Laura Transcript of Interview with John Gaspard Laura Brennan: My guest today may not be a professional magician, but he certainly creates magic on the page. John Gaspard’s novels are clever, funny and satisfying mysteries, with a flourish of stage magic. John, thank you for joining me. John Gaspard: Happy to be here. LB: Before we start talking about your novels, I'd like to talk a little bit about you. You also have a career in film and television, is that right? JG: Well, career might be a strong word. I have sold things to television and I have produced a number of low-budget feature films on my own. I started out as a teenager making films and I was directing them, so I was just always the director. LB: Well, I love that. I love that you take what you have and instead of letting it languish in a drawer somewhere, you actually went out and made it. And you started doing this when you were a teenager? JG: I did! I am one of the first people in the country or maybe even the world to make a feature-length Super 8 single sound system film. Which meant that the sound was right there on the film when you recorded it, as opposed to double system, where it is recorded separately. I did a couple of 16mm films in the '90s, they were all features, and then three digital features since around 2001. LB: So you have always wanted to write? JG: I always wanted to make movies, and since no one was handing me scripts I sort of fell into the writing part. LB: I like that because when you're writing a novel, you are both a writer and the director. JG: Yes. Yes, there's a lot more control going on in writing a novel. LB: So let's move into novels. How did you get started then, moving away from writing and directing features and into novels? JG: Well, I'd always figured that as I got a little bit older, I'd be doing less schlepping of film equipment and low-budget filmmaking. And I had read a book in my teens by William Bayer called, Breaking Through, Selling Out,
Episode 11: One of Elliott's dear friends, the Amazing Reverend Jared Kopf, Esq. sits down and chats about his mentor Bob White, the cult of Erdnase, the phenomenal innovator Dai Vernon, and much more. This is a great one! Enjoy!
Here is a repost of the two part interview with David Ben which was originally published in October of 2009. It has been remastered to remove the ads and consolidate both parts into one continuous interview. David talks about Marlo, Vernon and many other notable figures from the history of magic. From the original post: The public, the press and his peers have recognized David as one of the world's foremost sleight-of-hand artists. In Dai Vernon: A Biography (2006), David penned the first half (part two being in production) of the definitive portrait of Dai Vernon, the most influential magician of the twentieth century. He is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Magicana, a performing arts organization and registered charity which serves to educate and increase the public's understanding and appreciation of the art of magic. David joins me on the podcast to talk about his love of magic and his contribution to Genii's 75th Anniversary salute to the Jinx.

What can be better than a magic trick on the radio?! We will be talking to magician Steve Spill. Plus all the regular Dereck and Kay you love, Weird News and Hot Topics. Steve Spill has spent his entire life performing magic, producing magic shows around the globe in places such as the French Riviera's Cannes Film Festival, Universal Studios Hollywood, Harrah's Tahoe, and Toronto's Massey Hall. Among the projects on which Spill has provided expertise are the CBS TV special “The World Greatest Magicians,” and the FX TV series “Penn & Teller's Sin City Spectacular.” Spill grew up at the Magic Castle, a private club for magicians in Hollywood where his father, Sandy Spillman, was a manager in the 1960's and the young aspiring magician was tutored by industry icons such as Dai Vernon, Charlie Miller and Francis Carlyle. At 21, he started working as a magic bartender at the Jolly Jester saloon in Aspen, Colorado, where he perfected and became known among magicians, for his interpretations of a number classic and original sleight-of-hand tricks. Author of 'I Lie For Money' "Steve Spill has been a pal of Penn's and mine since the 1970's. While we were still working for tips and eating dirt at fairs, Steve was running one of the classiest comedy magic clubs in the country, and still does (his current one is in Santa Monica). Nobody knows more about magic from the inside than Steve. And most important, Steve and I share the deepest bond of all: we both swallow needles." - Teller of Penn & Teller.
Steve Spill has a lot to talk about! We talk about some of his early days doing bar magic at The Jolly Jester, his venue, Magicopolis in Santa Monica, CA, and some stores from his latest book, I Lie for Money, Candid Outrageous Stories from a Magician's Misadventures. Throughout this interview we learn some bar magic strategy as well as some of the ins & outs of running a full-time magic venue. Steve Spill is a magician who’s had a lifetime of magic and still has room for more! Having studied under magical legends like Dai Vernon, Charlie Miller, and Francis Carlyle, he’s performed and produced shows around the world in places like the French Riviera’s Cannes Film Festival, Universal Studios Hollywood, Harrah’s Tahoe, and Massey Hall in Toronto. He’s had his hand in a number of TV magic specials like "World’s Greatest Magicians" on CBS and "Penn & Teller’s Sin City Spectacular.” on FX. He was the magic bartender at Aspen Colorado’s “Jolly Jester,” and along with fellow magician Bob Sheets, starred in the longest running show in Washington DC, called "Magicomedy Cabaret.” In 1998, Steve opened up his very own magic venue called Magicopolis in Santa Monica, CA which is the home of “Escape Reality,” the show that stars him and his wife, actress Bozena Wrobel. Finally, Steve just released his brand new book, “I Lie for Money, Candid, Outrageous Stories from a Magician’s Misadventures,” which is a memoir of his life so far. 22 Years ago, magician Phil Ackerly was laid off from his day job at Fujitsu Microelectronics with a wife, a ten month old son, and a brand new home that was just coming out of escrow. This ultimately resulted in him taking his passion of performing magic full-time, making it his career. Flash forward to today, Phil is an award winning magician taking home numerous awards like first place close-up from Pacific Coast Association of Magicians in 2010 and five-time Gold Medal Winner for favorite Party Entertainer by Bay Area Parent magazine. He now performs over 350 shows every year at corporate events and private parties. Success Quote: In order to be successful, you have to fail. Things Learned from Working for a Talent Agent • How to plan events. • You can't be hung up on yourself. • Finding out what the clients need and fill that need. • Up-selling to your client. Failure Moment Not showing up at a show because of a rescheduling and a paperwork mixup. Favorite Success Being able to make a living performing magic. Also, performing at the Hollywood Magic Castle and having The Professor, Dai Vernon compliment him on his show. Biggest Professional Challenge Balancing his "creative work" with his "business work." Other Topics Covered • Tells his story about how he got layer off from his day job and then was able to transition into his passion of performing magic full time. He talks about his first year out there. • Carving out a niche for himself in the family show market. • Increasing your fees. • Personalizing your show and differentiating yourself. • Value and perception of value. • The lengths he goes to confirm and re-confirm his bookings. • Thank you notes. • How he uses Yelp and how he gets reviews. • How he uses his blog to connect with his clients on a personal level. He talks specifically about one post entitled Treasure the Moments. Parting Advice "Make me care." — Max Maven Make your audience care. In this episode I talk to magician Suzanne! We cover various topics like what she learned studying under Al Schneider and what you can learn about your audience from a horse! Suzanne is a world class magician and expert story teller from Minneapolis/St. Paul MN! Using her magic as a vehicle to play with her audiences, Suzanne specializes in performing close-up magic for corporate and private audiences as well as at a number of restaurants in her area. She’s also a favorite at the Hollywood Magic Castle where she's been the only female magician to not only be nominated for, but also win Close Up Magician of the Year which she received in 2010. She’s also appeared on the covers of Genii and MUM magazines. She makes shy people shine and bold people laugh. Jonathan Levit says "Her routines are masked in stories that touch your heartstrings and tie into her mystical imagination.” Success Quotes: Follow your bliss. — Joseph Campbell Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!” — Hunter S Thompson Failure Moment: This isn't a failure per se, but Suzanne talks about her struggle with cancer and what she took away from that. She learned how to stand up for herself and how to separate work and personal life. She also tells how magic, her bliss, helper her through this challenging time. Favorite Success: Being so accepted at the hollywood Magic Castle. Lessons from Al Schneider Suzanne had the opportunity to study under Al Schneider. A couple things she learned from him are in magic, all your movements need to look natural, whether you're putting a coin in your hand or faking it. Also, when you create a moment of magic, give your audience the time they need to fully process what they just experienced. Don't just plow through it. It's very personal to them. Lessons from a Horse Believe it or not, there's a lot to be learned about your audience from a horse! • Magicians can be likened to a predator and the audience, prey. • Communicating subconsciously. • Reading body language and adjusting your performance accordingly. • Putting your audience at ease. • Be aware of your own body language. How Does Suzanne Differentiate Herself? The magic is not about her, it's about how she makes her audience feel. What's worked best for growing her business? Word of mouth. Biggest Professional Challenge Breaking the preconception of the magician and teaching the lay audience about magic. What would she have done different? She wouldn't have tried to do everything. She would have hired people do do things like marketing and other tasks she's not good at. Interesting Story from Career Suzanne tells about her first interaction with The Professor, Dai Vernon. Parting Advice Always do what you love. Other Topics Covered • The importance of having support from your spouse when pursuing your dream. For most of his life, Jeff Altman resided in Los Angeles where he was a sought after stand up comedian, as well as an accomplished actor, starring and guest starring in TV shows the likes of the Dukes of Hazzard, Nurses, Baywatch, Night Court and the Tonight Show plus many others. In his career, Jeff starred in over 30 national commercial campaigns where he represented such companies as Budweiser, Arby's, Panasonic and General Motors. His movie credits include American Hot Wax, Easy Money, Highlander 2, Soul man and Doin' Time. And, of course, over 40 appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman. Now, because of the strangest of love stories, Jeff has moved to Central North Carolina and is focusing on his life long love of sleight of hand card magic. Growing up in Syracuse, New York, Jeff's love of card magic was instilled in him at an early age, as his dad, Arthur Altman, was one of the finest card handlers in the country. It wasn't long before Jeff, as a young boy, began fiddling with a deck of cards. Somehow, despite some of his "strange behaviors" Jeff was accepted into Johns Hopkins University to study Social and Behavioral Sciences. During his time in Baltimore, Jeff became close friends with card man extraordinaire, Frank Thompson. After graduating from college, Jeff immediately set his sights on Hollywood and the world famous Magic Castle. It was during this time at the "Castle" that Jeff was able to meet and befriend such card greats as Steve Freeman, Ricky Jay and the greatest of them all the "Professor" Dai Vernon. As his close friend David Letterman says: "If the magic has gone out of your life, call my friend, Jeff Altman, close up card handling at its finest. If you are not amazed and delighted, you may need a full neurological work up, He can do that too!"Check out Jeff's magic page here:https://www.jeffaltmanmagic.com/If you'd like to support the show and get some cool perks, check out our Patreon page:https://www.patreon.com/btbpcLook for new stuff for Patrons soon!Head over to the Behind the Bits website for extra content:https://www.thebtbpc.com/Get on our mailing list for news about future guests and more great content:https://www.thebtbpc.com/p/mailing-list/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
