In this episode we look briefly at Robert's father, William - Then a Farm called Mossgiel - Roberts turbulent private life and a book called 'Poem Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect'. This is a wild and unpredictable time in Roberts life, (roughly 1784 - 1786). His father passes away in 1784, they need to move to a new farm, Mossgiel, and as Robert is the eldest son, he is now the head of the family. This responsibility does not sit well on his shoulders and he needs a lot of help from his brother Gilbert. At this point in his life he is very interested in women and we talk about four in particular. Elizabeth Paton, Helen Miller, Jean Armour and Mary Campbell, (Known as 'Highland Mary' - even although her real name was actually Margret!). Robert is now in a bit of trouble and decides to emigrate to Jamaica...

Cape Breton's Information Morning from CBC Radio Nova Scotia (Highlights)
Mary Campbell, the founder of the online publication "The Cape Breton Spectator", has passed away.
Mary Campbell joins the show in-studio to share about tomorrow (Thursday May 2nd)'s National Day of Prayer. "Ma" Campbell is the Eastern PA Regional Coordinator and has served 32 years in support of the NDOP. She offers encouragement to participate, be it at an official event (such as the Liberty Prayer Alert (10am-2pm on the Independence Visitors Center grounds in Philadelphia) where Mary will be) or simply right where you are at any point tomorrow. This year's theme is "Lift Up The Word--Light Up The World" based on 2 Samuel 22:29-31. More information is available at www.nationaldayofprayer.org. Mary is 93 years young and has worked with AM 560 WFIL & sister station AM 990 WNTP (formerly WZZD) for 37 years. She is very excited about the NDOP and is a woman of God who lives a life of prayer. Dave Spadaro, Philadelphia Eagles Insider, is not 93 but has worked with the team about the same amount of time (35 years) as Mary has with WFIL :). We're privileged to have Spadaro on the program today as well, discussing several columns he wrote recently pertaining to the 2024 NFL Draft (including thoughts on Howie Roseman's approach and the addition of Jeremiah Trotter Jr) and A.J. Brown following his contract extension. It's tough being in ad-sales these days. Even tougher remaining positive. With advertisers migrating to DIY platforms, "no" has been replaced by the sound of crickets. In this episode, Corey & Gordon turn to a woman they think might be "the world's oldest living sales rep." Mary Campbell gets up every day, hops in her Cadillac SUV, and drives to work with a refreshing attitude and some well-weathered words of advice for her fellow reps.Stay in the loop with all things Borrell when you join our Research Alert Lists. In this episode, Chrisha and Catherine discuss how the car scene at the end of the episode should have been, as a giant infodump, dull--and yet it was not (thanks, Ackles and Thompson!). They also discuss the clapbacks to the Supernatural finale, how dying and going through the multiverse changed Dean, the John and Dean role reversals, how the concept of reparenting applies in a very Supernatural way, and delve deep into Dean's monologue at the end of the episode. Finally, they discuss what exactly Dean is now, and the implications that might have for any future iterations of Supernatural. Meg Donnelly is one of the most authentic people I have ever had the pleasure of sitting down and talking to. We start the conversation by getting properly into 'The Winchesters' -- her character and the cast. We talk about the storyline, her arc, and the future. During the conversation, she constantly praises her fellow castmates, crew, and writers. She downplays a lot of the skills she has infused into Mary, and I find myself continually reminding her of how good she is. After talking about the show for a while, we can't deny the fact that its predecessor Supernatural looms over us in more ways than one. So we begin to talk about what it was like working with Jensen on and off screen, seeing the Impala in person (and getting to drive it), advice Jensen gave her, celebrating Dean's birthday party, and that epic finale. We also manifested hope for a renewal of the show. While we talk, we find ourselves relating to one another in more ways than one as the conversation flows so effortlessly. After I was done recording, we both stayed on for a while, just talking about life and some fun things we can do behind the scenes for season two. It was a joy to get to know Meg on a deeper level, hear about her family, and constantly laugh together. She is a great person to know and hopefully a new friend for life. Enjoy the interview and the fan Q&As we added in at the end! Drake Rodgers took on John Winchester, one of the most famous fathers in television history. The Winchesters is a prequel to the fan-favorite Supernatural which had a few versions of John Winchester over a decade, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan cast as the original. So now that the first season of The Winchesters has ended, Drake sat down with us exclusively to do a deep dive into getting the role, the wardrobe, fun moments on set, behind the scenes details, acting with his cast mates, and a bunch of things he learned from Jensen Ackles (including some entertaining stories). I asked for an update on the latest renewal news and his plans now while the show is on hiatus. Drake even took the time to answer many fan questions from you directly. We also have something fun coming related to The Winchesters, Walker, and Walker Independence (but more to come later, so stay tuned to my social @Monica1236). In the meantime, enjoy! Our very own Mary Campbell joins us in-studio today on the Tim DeMoss Show. Mary tells of her path to working as an Account Executive at AM 990 WZZD (now WFIL's sister station, Philadelphia's AM 990 The Answer) and her current role as Sr Media Strategist for both 990 WNTP and AM 560 WFIL. Mary has also served with the National Day of Prayer for 32 years and is currently its Regional Coordinator. She discusses her passion for prayer and the unity of the Church. Recently Mary was honored by Dave Santrella, CEO of WFIL's parent company (Salem Media Group), with a special certificate commemorating 35 years of service with the stations. In that presentation--and again on the show today--Mary shared meaningful insights from her life, ranging from growing up in a very segregated Alabama to living in such a way that she doesn't leave this world "without the sweetest music being played" as she believes many do.Mary can be reached at 215-280-2954 or at mcampbell@salemphilly.com (for both radio advertising and the National Day of Prayer (May 4, 2023 / www.nationaldayofprayer.org).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Nida Khurshid is one of the nicest people on the planet. She popped onto the screen with no makeup on and, of course, looked beautiful. She has a big smile and claims she is a dork, but we instantly connect, constantly joking and talking as if we have been friends for years. At first, I even forgot to hit record, but once we got into the interview, I saw a side to Khurshid where she became vulnerable. She got emotional as she discussed the importance of being a strong woman with a diverse background on a hit television show. After that, it's a juggle between getting through the episodes, talking about behind-the-scenes fun, and laughing. I didn't want the interview to end, and when we were finished, I felt like I was saying goodbye to someone I had known for years and couldn't wait to speak to again. Khurshid is a fantastic actor who instantly makes you feel comfortable (I must try her cooking) and quickly befriends you. I had one of the best times getting to really meet her and break down all things 'The Winchesters.' JoJo Fleites is one of the nicest human beings on the planet. The second JoJo pops on the screen for the interview, you immediately feel at ease. Fleites has this beautiful way of bringing a sense of calmness into the interview. We start off (before I even hit record) with a fun conversation about my love for JoJo and the amazing way they have broken barriers for so many people (shown by the massive amount of fan questions sent to me). As I hit record, Fleites causally sits (looking like an angel) as they answer all of my burning questions -- like what was it like working with Jensen? Are any pranks going on on set? How did the core cast bond? Will there be a season two? -- Basically, all of the things we want to know. Fleites tells some of the best behind-the-scenes stories as we laugh through the interview. JoJo is fun, heartfelt, incredibly vulnerable, and honest. I didn't want the interview to end. However, we stayed on for a long time, including an entire fan Q&A session. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did doing it. Let me know your favorite part! https://www.cake4kids.org/ "Cake4Kids Mission Statement We bake and deliver free birthday cakes for underserved children who might not otherwise receive one. In a world where the basics of a positive childhood are often out of reach and youth have little to call their own, the seemingly simple gift of a birthday cake can make a huge impact by raising their self-esteem and confidence. We partner with human and social services agencies to accomplish this mission. How Does It Work? Cake4Kids is powered by an amazing and compassionate group of volunteers who donate all the ingredients and supplies to bake cakes for the youth in their own homes and then deliver them to our partner agencies who support the youth. We have no minimum commitment — volunteers choose how often and which cakes they want to bake! Our volunteers never meet the children we support, but every cake is custom-made for each child and an enormous amount of love is baked into each one. We partner with agencies and organizations throughout the country who serve the youth. Our partners request a cake on behalf of the youth, and Cake4Kids volunteers deliver directly to the agencies." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loveletterstovirginia/message

Mary Campbell had what she called a pipe dream of living in Europe. She recently turned that pipe dream into a reality and is now living as a permanent resident in Portugal. You'll hear how she did it and how she feels about it... (FREAKING AWESOME!) and with so much more. Mary and I met in the public schools where I worked as a music teacher and Mary worked as a school psychologist. Mary grew up in the Pacific Northwest, joined the USAF right out of high school, and served as a German cryptologic linguist (listened to East German Air Force radio transmissions & analyzed them for intelligence). After her enlistment, she got my grad & undergrad degrees at UC Davis in psychology/school psychology & worked in public schools in CA and ID for 30+ years. Most of that time was as a school psych, but she took a brief foray into administration and served as a building principal at the middle school level. Mary has worked with children from preschool through high school. She retired in July 2020, a little earlier than she had originally planned (a Covid-inspired decision), and decided to move to Portugal in Spring 2021. She arrived in Lisbon in April 2022, after selling her home, and applying for a long-term residence visa. She has two grown sons (ages 40 and 34) who still live in the Boise area, as does their father, her former husband. Here are the takeaways... Hearing limiting things like "I don't know about a single woman her age....(fill in the blank)" can feel limiting until you realize, you'll be a woman your age ANYWHERE. You might as well be where you want to be. Intentional connections can be made through meet-up groups like meetup.com, Facebook groups, and buy-nothing groups. Looking for shared interests. It can be an easy way to make friends. You don't have to know the language of a country as long as you are willing to learn the language. Recognizing the circumstances of international moves is really important. There is a difference between being an immigrant and a refugee. International moves are going to take time. Have patience, be polite, be persistent and recognize you might not understand everything. You'll need to ask questions and be patient. Decisions terminate panic. Living your best life empowers other people to live their best lives. Mary doesn't do a lot on social media but I'll be sure to pass on anything to her. Just DM me on Instagram or email me. On a rare in-person episode of the podcast at PJ's on Maple, I have a conversation with Mary Campbell and Susan Hassig about COVID and where we are two years later.
In this episode, we break tradition. Meaningful Marketplace interviews female food company founders and female entrepreneurs in the food marketplace. But Tory Campbell's family business is truly worthy of a message that needs to be shared with the entire food world. Their company, Felton & Mary's Artisan Foods, produces the magic behind that glorious, mouth-watering global pastime, Bar-B-Queuing. Along with the spectrum of sauces that cater to all tastes, Felton & Mary also offers spice rub for advanced meat preparation, and they have now branded their very own link sausages, a recipe of ground pork, ground beef and an ideal blend of their special seasonings. And now the story behind the company name and the family. Felton and Mary Campbell were Tory's grandparents. If you knew them you would have known, as Tory says, “…two amazing people who really had a knack for hospitality…”. They always had big pots of food on the stove at their home and always welcomed friends, family and neighbors to come over and enjoy their food. To them, community was built through hospitality and food. Felton and Mary met in the Bay Area and retired up to Portland, Oregon in the mid-80's. Their children and grandchildren, including Tory, followed them there and it was only natural to start a family business around the food and community they had enjoyed all their lives. Felton and Mary were particularly adept a Bar-B-Que and there's a reason behind that. Bar-B-Queuing is an intensive love affair with the meal. It's a commitment of time, labor, multiple ingredients and is a community project. There's downtime in the process, time where people play board games, shoot the breeze and catch up on events. Plus, there's tradition and showmanship; the cook has center stage. It also revolves around a big fire, so it's somewhat primal as well. The recipes developed at home were the impetus to start a restaurant, which coincidently wound up being in their home. Felton, Mary, kids, grandkids and neighbors all pitched in, knocking down walls, painting and pulling up tree stumps (Want a tough job? Try that some time.) and the quaint home became Campbell's Bar-B-Que restaurant. They were big believers in urban farming and utilized the collard greens, basil and other ingredients from their backyard garden. It ran continuously until a few years ago, with Tory's aunt in charge. Then in 2014 after the closing, she turned the recipes over to Tory, telling him it was time for the third generation to take the ball and run with it. Tory's mission is to spread his family's recipes and traditions to the world in an effort to create communities everywhere. The labeling is homage to Felton and Mary for a couple of reasons. First, Tory feels people want to know the source and authenticity for a branded food. They want to know the reason someone was compelled to search for a recipe or a process that was different and worth sharing. But second for very practical reasons, there are lots of Bar-B-Que sauces out there and as Tory says, “You've got to stand out!”. A college friend of Tory's used to go to the restaurant and went on to become a successful graphic designer. He was a natural to work on the labeling and one more shining example of the community that has been built around the Campbell family. Currently, the business is not yet large enough for Troy to be involved fulltime, so he has recruited family members to handle different parts of the business until it grows into a full-time occupation.

This final episode takes a slightly different approach, Mary Campbell, CEO of TAFE Queensland reflects on her 30 years at TAFE, sharing her insights into leadership and cultural development, as she talks with host Lisa Alexander AM. There are no shortcuts to achieving a strong culture and high performing teams, it’s about the long game. Leaders must believe in the work they do, be driven to achieve goals and passionate about the journey. With three decades in the vocational training and education space and leading a staff of 4000 across the state, Mary embodies these ideas because she believes to her core that the goal of TAFE Queensland is to provide people with skills and the dignity of work. In keeping with Better Read than Dead’s mission of bringing you literature’s greatest failsons -- and Tristan’s favorite genre of novel, “feckless boob goes on a trip” -- may we present Sydney Owenson’s The Wild Irish Girl and its hero, Horatio M. (We assume he just forgot the rest of his last name.) Horatio is an English aristocrat whose dad exiles him to Ireland in penance for his failsonery, but he soon becomes quite horny for both a harp-playing Irish princess and for Ireland itself, where Horatio learns they do many mind-blowing things -- have picturesque ruins, speak Irish, and grow mustaches. We’re talking gender, the nation, internal colonialism, and more! We read the Oxford edition with notes and introduction by Kathryn Kirkpatrick. For more on Owenson (a nineteenth-century radical!), we recommend Mary Campbell’s biography Lady Morgan: The Life and Times of Sydney Owenson. Episode Notes: In 1758, Delaware Indians kidnapped a Pennsylvania girl as a surrogate for a tribal chief's dead granddaughter, and brought her with them to live in the Ohio country. For nearly a century, books, paintings and commemorative plaques held that the girl, Mary Campbell, lived with her captors in a cave in what is now Gorge Metro Park in Cuyahoga Falls.
