So an email landed in my inbox - Spark Arena named among the world's top 20 arenas. Now, this is a big deal. This isn't a list that's put together by some random Instagram account in Norway with 100 followers. This is a list put together by IQ Magazine. And if you're into music in a big way - like, really into it, more than a Rolling Stone kind of way - you'll know IQ Magazine is a big deal. So for Spark Arena to be named in the top 20 arenas in the world is a big deal. Since moving back to Auckland three years ago, I've been to Spark Arena more times than I can remember. I've seen everything there. I've seen The Wiggles, Suzy Cato, big noisy rock like The War on Drugs, Mumford & Sons, Lenny Kravitz - he was the best, wasn't he? I've seen big stars like Lizzo and Lorde and shows like Hamilton. I've been there in previous years, obviously, for things like Oprah Winfrey and Celine Dion. And every single time - honestly, without fail - I've had a great experience. Now, we can have a debate about the acoustics because, frankly, yeah, they do suck sometimes. I mean, you know, it's not the best. If you've experienced the best acoustics, you'll know this place is far from it. But otherwise, it's a great experience. It never feels empty in there, even with smaller crowds, because it's versatile enough to adjust for them. It's in the central city so it's easy to get to and from the great bars and restaurants around it. It's easy to walk out and grab an Uber, easy to find a car park nearby, easy to get to the train station or catch a bus. Staff are always helpful in getting you to your seat or pointing you in the right direction. The drinks are served fast. It's really easy to get in. I think we've become so consumed in Auckland in recent years with the debate that flares up every now and again about how we don't have a decent new stadium, that we forget what we actually do have - which is a really good arena right in the centre of town that does its job brilliantly. Chris has gone for an Arnie classic this week. Released in 1988, Red Heat arrived right in the thick of the buddy-cop boom, pairing Arnold Schwarzenegger's granite-faced Soviet policeman with Jim Belushi's wisecracking Chicago detective. Directed, co-written and co-produced by Walter Hill, the film sits somewhere between Cold War curiosity, action thriller, and odd-couple comedy, with Hill bringing his usual muscular, stripped-down approach to men glaring at each other near explosions. The cast also includes Peter Boyle, Ed O'Ross, Laurence Fishburne, Gina Gershon and Brion James, which is a very 1988 way of saying, “Yes, this will involve shouting in warehouses.”Production took the film across Chicago, Los Angeles and Budapest, with Budapest doubling for Moscow, while the filmmakers were also granted approval to shoot establishing material in Moscow's Red Square — noted by the AFI Catalog as a first for an American feature production. The film was released by TriStar Pictures on 17 June 1988, opening to just over $8.1 million domestically and finishing with around $35 million at the US box office. There are noteworthy changes in every decade of modern music, but the seismic shifts and chaos of the 1990s were unparalleled. Whether it was the music of your youth, your kids' youth, your parents' youth or even your grandparents' youth, most everyone has noticed (either at the time or now, in retrospect) that the '90s were just different. It was the decade that saw Generation X hand over the music reins to millennials. MTV went from a driving force in music to more of a footnote, and music videos lost importance in the gap years between emphasis on cable channels and the advent of YouTube and streaming in the 2000s. Stylistically, hip-hop was a juggernaut, swinging from gangsta rap to a mainstream phenomenon that permeated into R&B, pop and even rock. Also, fueled by the momentum of Madonna in the 1980s, pop in the 1990s became dominated by women artists - with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion taking turns at the top of the charts, and wholesome teen singers like Debbie Gibson and Tiffany, who ushered the genre into the 1990s, had been replaced by decidedly less wholesome singers like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera by decade's end. Latin artists also became permanent fixtures in the mainstream, and thanks to Garth Brooks, country reinvented itself into yet another huge crossover genre, with "hat acts" ruling the roost in the mainstream. And in rock music, huge shifts came in waves. The "hair metal" bands that controlled rock in the late 1980s were all but wiped out by grunge in the early 1990s, flipping the genre's script from mindless, flashy formula pop-with-guitars to something far more introspective, anxious and angry. But grunge was at the forefront for only a few year, and soon enough all manner of "modern rock," "alt-rock" and "college rock" bands - from Weezer to Radiohead to Beck - brought freshness and ingenuity to the sonic landscape. Meanwhile, the 1990s saw the rise of traveling mega-festivals such as Lollapalooza to the Vans Warped Tour. And the Lilith Fair emphasized the unprecedented prominence of women in rock, who came in hard with gritty sounds and raw self-assuredness beyond the jangly pop-rock of 1980s bands like The Go-Go's and The Bangles. This week on "How We Heard It," your hosts - who were young men in the 1990s and at Ground Zero in the music business - shine a light on what was going on in the tumultuous 1990s and how everything seemed to forever change, across the board, in music.
