Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on 1997's Interstate '76. We set the game a bit in its time, talk about Activision (almost as an afterthought), and then start getting into the characters and the vibe, of which there is much. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Early mission or two Issues covered: a game time forgot, playing a sim game genre, a unique take on the sim genre plus car combat, prepping the sim elements vs the actual play, other games from that year, taking a formula and doing something different with it, modern exploitation-inspired games, exploitation cinema, grindhouse, other potential influences and inspirations, why you pick sparse environments, breakable cacti, a huge variety of games, low-cost film-making and democratization, vigilantes, a bland corporation, text adventures, a business and not a game company, seeing the impact of acquisition or mergers, character introductions, fake actors playing characters, character names, Groove Champion vs Stiletto Anyway, stylized and simplified characters, flat shading and seeing every polygon, connecting to the character in the cockpit and via the radio, naturally cinematic, stylized presence, jitteriness and physics, compounding errors, deterministic physics, preserving this game and finding ways to play it, just shipping a game, dealing with a controller vs keyboard. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: TIE Fighter (series), Starfighter, MechWarrior (series), Voltron, Diablo, Resident Evil, The Last Express, Fallout, GoldenEye, Castlevania: SotN, Age of Empires, Outlaws, Curse of Monkey Island, Dark Forces 2, Shadows of the Empire, Wing Commander: Prophecy, Final Fantasy VII, Mario Kart 64, Gran Turismo, PlayStation, Dark Forces, Final Fantasy Tactics, Wet, Kane and Lynch, Suda 51, Grasshopper Interactive, Killer 7, Death Race 2000, Russ Meyers, Death Proof, Mad Max (series), MegaMan 8, Kaeon, Cleopatra Jones, Enter the Dragon, Jim Kelly, Bruce Lee, Game of Death, Quentin Tarantino, Kill Bill, Fist of Fury, Starsky and Hutch, River Raid, Pitfall, David Crane, Atari, Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Capcom, Blizzard, id Software, Interplay, Infocom, Zork (series), Witness, Enchanter (series), Ballyhoo, Lurking Horror, Electronic Arts, Bobby Kotick, Nintendo, BattleZone, Pac-Man, Jason Schreier, Play Nice: The Rise and Fall of Blizzard Entertainment, Hearthstone, Marvel Snap, Ultima (series), Bioware, Treyarch, Raven Software, Heretic/Hexen, Quake, Battletech/FASA Entertainment, Anachronox, Pam Grier, Chuck Norris, Dungeon Keeper, Half-Life 2, Indiana Jones and the Internal Machine, Video Game History Foundation, Star Wars: Episode I: Racer, Forza (series), Falcon (series), Dark Souls, Minecraft, LostLake86, Mors, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. In part 3 of the July – September 2024 installment of UNFOLDING THE CALENDAR, Film Forum's Repertory Artistic Director Bruce Goldstein has a lively, free-wheeling conversation with Odie Henderson, chief film critic of The Boston Globe, about our upcoming festival BLAXPLOITATION, BABY!, opening Friday, August 16, and continuing for a week with 16 genre classics from the early 1970s, including SHAFT, SUPER FLY, COFFY, CLEOPATRA JONES, and much more. The festival coincides with the publication of Henderson's new book, Black Caesars and Foxy Cleopatras: A History of Blaxploitation, available for purchase at our concession during the festival. As a young man, Odie attended every single movie in Film Forum's -- and the world's – very first Blaxploitation festival in 1995, programmed by Bruce and pioneering author and film historian Donald Bogle, who also collaborated on the current series. Justin Simien's 4-part documentary HOLLYOOD BLACK, based on Bogle's book, premiered this week on MGM+.

Logo theme by: Gail NoblesArt by: Gail NoblesAaliyah lived to make two movies. They were Queen of the Damned & Romeo Must Die. My favorite movie was Romeo Must Die starring Jet Li and Aaliyah. The movie led me to think Aaliyah would eventually star in martial art movies if she had lived. I can see her in my mind now. She might would have made a Blaxploitation film in the 2000's in Kung Fu action after Romeo Must Die. Blaxploitation films were made in the early 1970s. Some of the Blaxploitation female Kung Fu action movies that were made are Cleopatra Jones & TNT Jackson. In modern times like we live in, I believe Aaliyah could have been an even better Kung Fu action lady in films. I believe she could have made some big smash hit movies along with her music if she had been alive today. In Romeo Must Die, I saw some great strength in Aaliyah working on her fight scene with Jet Li. She made me think of Foxy Brown when I saw her shooting a gun near the end of the movie. Aaliyah had her hair covering one eye. That was a good idea. It has been said that it was Aaliyah's mother's idea and thought it would be a signature style that would set Aaliyah apart from other artists. And I think it did. Aaliyah had her own style in clothing. She probably would have had her own Kung Fu outfits if she had made Kung Fu movies. I saw a clip of Aaliyah trying on a robe in Japan back in 1996. If you knew Aaliyah, she believed in adding what she called Flava (flavor). There's one more thing I saw in Aaliyah. If she had lived, she might - might would have became a director or producer in film & in music after some years. It has been said that she had a 4.0 G.P.A. in school. It looked as if Aaliyah could have been her own dance choreographer too. After all, she knew how to dance anyway. She was around all of the things she could have became, & I know she was probably learning it all. It's sad that Aaliyah's life was cut short. God didn't give all that talent & ability to Aaliyah for nothing. I do not believe it was intended for her to go. But I guess we can say she paved the way for others.I'm Gail Nobles. Today's topic: My Picturization of Aaliyah.

Slam the Gavel welcomes back Attorney Ingrid Irwin from Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. The last time she was on the show was November 16th, 2021, Season 2, Episode #130. In this podcast we discussed her book, Nolle Prosequi in, which was published in 2020. The title of the book means "do not prosecute." This is a call to action and critically assesses the latest developments in the law in this area from 2018 to present day. This book is published under her name Ingrid Irwin. Attorney Irwin stressed the importance of sexual assault victims/victims of rape to have THEIR OWN ATTORNEY. The Prosecution in a Criminal Case IS NOT THE VICTIM'S ATTORNEY. This must be made clear at the very beginning that the crime takes place. The victim should not go to the police, but to retain an attorney first. This would save the victim from repetitious re-traumatizing of the incident. With two books written, Attorney Irwin is very passionate about victims getting justice the correct way and that is that they have THEIR OWN ATTORNEY. Attorney Irwin is a book author of two books on the law and sexual assault that can be found on AMAZON: Doli Incapax in 2018 (means accused is deemed incapable of criminal intent "guilty mind" due to their young age 10-14 yrs) This is my memoir, my pen name is Cleopatra Jones. Nolle Prosequi in2020 (means 'do not prosecute') This is a call to action and critically assesses the latest developments in the law in this area, from 2018 to present day. This is published under my name Ingrid Irwin. Again, Attorney Irwin is an Activist against sex abuse and child sexual abuse (CSA), on social media such as Facebook: Ingrid Irwin. Slam the Gavel welcomes Attorney Ingrid Irwin, 48 years old and a former Catholic. She is from Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, the pedophilic epicenter of Australia, which compares to Boston in the movie, "Spotlight." Attorney Irwin has been a lawyer since 1999, working in family violence, child protection, family law, civil law including sex assault survivors suing perpetrators for personal injury and intervention orders. She has also represented clergy sex abuse clients in the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (CSA). Attorney Irwin has acted for police complainants who alleged they were abused by Cardinal Pell and the bulk of her practice has involved acting for women and children in Family Law and family violence matters (where most of the victims are female because the violence if definitely gendered). At present Attorney Irwin is currently an Activist/Advocate to the plight of brave victims of sexual assault who report to police. However, the system is in a SHAMEFUL STATE OF DISREPAIR despite NUMEROUS Government Apologies, Redress Schemes, Inquiries, and Royal Commissions into family violence and child sexual assault. Cleopatra Jones is a dynamic artist, fashion designer and poet, however, her talents and skills far exceed these titles. Her clothing brand, 444 alignment, features acrylic on fabric and embodies true wearable art of unique and eccentric designs. As an artist, her bold color choices and abstract visuals brings the audience into a new realm of fantasy and grandeur. Based in Chicago, IL, Cleopatra Jones pulls inspiration from many places, people and objects. Yet as a true cancer sun, her motives lie in emotional expression and inspiring others to feel through her art. Whether she is painting on canvas, designing a pant suit, or recording a feature for an upcoming music project, Cleopatra Jones brings her full, authentic self to everything that she does, allowing others to feel deeply connected to her vulnerability and thoughtfulness. A genuine and introspective guest, we hope you fall in love with Jones as much as we did. (At the end of this episode features the skit "Cloud Radio" ft. Cleopatra Jones from "From Milwaukee With Love" by A.C. the Ruler)

What makes for an ideal collaboration between actors and behind-the-camera talent? Misha Green and Jurnee Smollett, the respective creator-showrunner and star of HBO’s “Lovecraft Country,” have plenty of insights into maximizing creativity and trust on set. “You gotta have an environment in which the ‘captain’ has created a level of safety, a level for you to fail big,” says Jurnee. “We’re going towards the same goal, which is the truth of this character,” adds Misha. “And we’re both fearless in that.” Before “Lovecraft Country,” the supernatural horror drama adapted from novelist Matt Ruff’s riff on H. P. Lovecraft, Misha and Jurnee worked together on the hit WGN thriller “Underground.” As a writer-director-producer, Misha is also the creative force behind “Helix” and the upcoming “Cleopatra Jones” and “Tomb Raider 2.” For more insight into her craft, check out Misha’s Meet the Maker feature: https://bit.ly/3hSEXiE Jurnee began her career as a child actor, on “On Our Own” and “Full House,” then broke out in “Eve’s Bayou,” “The Great Debaters,” “Friday Night Lights,” and last year’s “Birds of Prey.” For her work as Leti on “Lovecraft Country,” Jurnee earned a Critics Choice Super Award and an ensemble SAG Award nomination. Funk music might be most commonly associated with 1970s bands like Funkadelic, Parliament, Sly & The Family Stone, the Ohio Players, and other more, but the 1990s saw their fair share of funk enthusiasts slip into the alternative mainstream. The Red Hot Chili Peppers had become an MTV staple, Primus and Faith No More explored the outer edges, while bands like the Beastie Boys, Living Colour, Infectious Grooves and more put their own spin on the sound. In Ann Arbor, Michigan, the remnants of 80s hardcore bands the Necros, Laughing Hyenas, and others formed Big Chief, whose 1991 skewed towards the alternative metal sound. That would not be the case on their 1993 follow-up, Mack Avenue Skullgame. Dubbed an "Original Soundtrack" for a movie that does not exist, the album is a faithful throwback to the 70s blaxploitation sounds of soundtracks like Shaft, Superfly, Cleopatra Jones and others. The band lays down authentic if updated funk sounds and adds the necessary vocals of Thornetta Davis to add melodic punch. But like all soundtracks, can the concept work without the imagery to go with it? Songs In This Episode: Intro - My Name Is Pimp (Mack's Theme) 19:08 - One Born Every Minute (Doc's Theme) 24:18 - If I Had A Nickle For Every Dime 27:32 - No Free Love On The Street 32:55 - Cop Kisser (Mack F*cks Up The Scene At The Freezer) Outro - Cut To The Chase Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. 1) “Shaft Theme”, Isaac Hayes2) “Superfly”, Curtis Mayfield3) “Give Me Your Love (Love Song)”, Curtis Mayfield4) “Exotic Dance”, Roy Ayers5) “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time)”, The Delfonics6) “Across 110th Street”, Bobby Womack & Peace7) “Theme From Cleopatra Jones”, Joe Simon8) “Theme From Enter The Dragon”, Lalo Schifrin9) “Blacula Strikes!””, Gene Page10) “Main Theme From Trouble Man”, Marvin Gaye11) “The Boss”, James Brown12) “Main Title Truck Turner”, Isaac Hayes13) “Shaft Theme”, Barry White & The Love Unlimited Orchestra
When fellow operatives (and childhood friends) Matthew Johnson and Melvin Johnson disappear during an undercover mission in Hong Kong, Cleopatra Jones travels there to find them. During the 1970s, U.S. Special Agent Cleopatra Jones proves to be an invaluable asset to the local police forces in the war on drugs.

Ok...in homage of a potential game changer for the James Bond franchise, let's make this show description, straight with no chaser! Welcome to Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review (MWIR) podcast, airing every Wednesday at 7pm eastern. The topics up for grabs this week are: the crew paid a visit to Brooklyn's third annual Blerd City Con held at Saint Francis College and we give you a run down of the festivities; freshmen congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib better known as "The Squad" appear to have raised the ire of President Trump to such a degree-ad hominem racial attacks are apparently not off limits for this Commander in Chief; the many years of speculation that Idris Elba might be in line to assume the role of James Bond, many media outlets are intimating that Captain Marvel's Lashana Lynch might be considered for a racial and gender twist to the character (no Cleopatra Jones redux, huh?); noted futurist/inventor, Elon Musk has more news about the prospects of a human-A.I. interface device; Thor 4 and Kingsmen prequel news; lastly, the Chinese (only) ancestry casting call for Marvel's Shang Chi film is causing a viral frenzy in China. Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever does. Joining Tim this time is journalist and broadcaster Samira Ahmed, who wonders if anyone else has hazy recollections of ITV Saturday Morning show The Saturday Banana, Children's BBC drama The Changes, Mary Quant-designed action doll Havoc, Nurdin & Peacock Own Brand Cola, ZX Spectrum game Thro' The Wall, childhood misapprehensions about the news, and that time that ITV schools show Picture Box used a clip from Cleopatra Jones. Along the way we'll be pondering what Jacob Rees-Mogg could have learned from Metal Mickey, swapping stories about writing to Newsround and Week Ending, and finding out the appropriate circumstances for marrying off poseable action figures. And if you can find the edition of Picture Box in question, please get in touch...!! More episodes of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/

In the news this week, some issues where being "TRUMPED" for lack of better words. To start, according to Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton is a sore loser and even worse, a hypocrite because she's now challenging the results of the election. Trump is referring to Clinton's attack after he said during the third presidential debate he was non-committal on challenging the results of the election. Clinton called Trump's hedge "a direct threat to our democracy. Clinton has joined Green Party candidate Jill Stein's recount effort in several key states that went for Trump. What do you think? Want to boycott all things Donald Trump? Get excited, because there's an app for that! After all, with films like Love Jones, Boyz N the Hood, Daughters of the Dust, Menace II Society, The Best Man, Waiting to Exhale, Get on the Bus, Slam, The Five Heartbeats, Eve’s Bayou. While the 1970s were ruled by heroes like Cleopatra Jones, Shaft, Truck Tuner and Foxy Brown, and the 1990s offered a fuller picture of Black life, lately Hollywood ain’t been no crystal stair for filmmakers of color - thoughts? This week Lee and Daniel take a look at two blaxploitation films with a female lead that don't star Pam Grier (don't worry, they'll eventually get to her as well). Up for review first is the Bondish "Cleopatra Jones" (1973), and then the cheap, chopsocky cash-in "TNT Jackson" (1974). Listener comments are also covered. This one is a bit more of a casual episode again -- short and sweet and hard to defeat. Take a hard line and you'll have a bad time. Turn that frown upside down or you'll enter demolition town. It has kicks to the head that will leave you dead. Okay, we'll stop now. "Cleopatra Jones" IMDB "TNT Jackson" IMDB Featured Music: "The Wrecking Yard" and "The Theme from Cleopatra Jones" by J. J. Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold (1975) continues Blaxploitation History Month. Tamara Dobson and the Karate Brothers return for this bigger, crazier, Hong Kong-ier sequel. Kim Robinson's father, a tailor, inspired me. The first thing Kim ever made, a halter top, was the kind with the choker ring around the neck. She attached some yellow yarn as hair, buttons for eyes, and for lips, a red licorice. Sadly, the California sun melted the licorice all over the place, but every little girl in the neighborhood was exchanging their toys for one. In addition to continuing her sewing throughout high school, Kim was in the modeling club, where she, along with her friends showcased her designs. Remember, this was the late 70’s when Superfly and Cleopatra Jones were The Thang. Kim progress to making long coats and lace up pants out of recycled Levi’s. Currently writing a story entitled Street Life to Housewife, Kim assures you that the title speaks for itself.
