Today's guest is Luis Ubinas. Luis is someone who's been driven by a strong sense of responsibility from an early age. He grew up in the projects of the South Bronx in the 1970s, arguably the most dangerous neighborhood in the United States at the time. With the amazing support of others, including individuals and the government, Luis was not only able to survive that upbringing but also thrive in the years that follow. After graduating from Harvard in 1985, Luis went on to work at McKinsey and eventually become Senior Partner, where he developed and led the West Coast Media and Entertainment Practice. Following McKinsey, he became President of the Ford Foundation for 6 years and led a major restructuring of the organization during the Great Recession. Now, he's a Board Member of numerous large corporations including Electronic Arts, Boston Private, and Mercer. Even with all of this professional success, Luis has always made it a point to look back on his past and make sure that others can have the same opportunities he has had. In this interview, we discuss Luis' upbringing in South Bronx, how that upbringing shaped him, his work as President of the Ford Foundation, and the impact art and technology can have in driving social change. Today’s guest is none other than Silicon Valley Legend, Heidi Roizen. She is an accomplished, Entrepreneur, former head of developer relations at Apple and now, a legendary VC. She shares with us why today is the Golden Era for entrepreneurship, how any company is literally a tech company and more about VC-backed company, Memphis Meats. Silicon Valley's Greatest Connector The Financial Women of San Francisco honored Heidi as Financial Woman of the Year in 2018. She is also dubbed as “Silicon Valley's Greatest Connector.” She is currently sits on the board of companies such as Zoox, Planet, Memphis Meats, HelixRE and DMGT. “I talk about the fact that there should be more women entrepreneurs and there should be more women venture capitalists and diversity. Not just gender diversity but other diversity and I try to support that through my actions. I think it’s appropriate given my role in Silicon Valley. If I have an opinion about that, I should be vocal about that.” - Heidi Roizen Other than these achievements, Heidi is a self-proclaimed animal lover. She adopted several dogs from the shelter, which she fondly shares in her social media. Golden Era of Entrepreneurship Heidi describes the market as a seller's market when it comes to early-stage equity. There are a lot of sources of capital in the market, its very competitive. She enumerates all the positive assets entrepreneurs have in today’s world. “There's just so many different avenues for funding. There are so many tech breakthroughs that can be built upon, whether that is networking or processing power, sensors, devices, GPS, next-gen VR technologies, ubiquitous platforms. When you think about the kinds of businesses you can start today for pennies, which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars in the past.” - Heidi Roizen The only negative she can mention is about competition, as she believes everyone else can also solve many big, interesting problems. Additionally, she mentions why companies nowadays are considered tech companies. “I do think it’s interesting today is, every company is a technology company, right? For the most part, how they interact with the customers, how they distribute their products, how they garner feedback, how they handle customer service, tech support, logistics, supply chain, internally, HR systems—every company is deep in technology now.” - Heidi Roizen Memphis Meats. Cell-based Meat Heidi shares more about Memphis Meats and why she believes there is a huge growth potential for cell-based meat. First, she discusses how meat is inefficient to produce: from breeding to feeding to slaughtering and distribution to markets. Not only does it requires more resources, such as land and water use, it is also highly prone to contamination. “The great thing about being a venture capitalist is, we don’t have to actually invent this stuff. There are really awesome entrepreneurs that are way smarter than we are who come up with these ideas. We just have to make sure they want to come to talk to us, and that we can validate sufficiently what they are doing through our own research learning.” - Heidi Roizen To hear more about legendary Silicon Valley stories of Heidi Roizen, download and listen to the episode. Bio: Heidi represents the voice of the entrepreneur, having been one herself. But she also represents the voice of the user, as those are the roots that led her to start a company in the first place. She is on the boards of directors of Zoox, Planet, Memphis Meats, HelixRE and DMGT (LSE:DMGT.) After Heidi earned her undergraduate and MBA degrees from Stanford, she co-founded T/Maker, where she served as CEO for over a decade through its acquisition by Deluxe Corporate in 1994. Next, she joined Apple as VP of Worldwide Developer Relations, and from there, Mobius Venture Capital. She's been named to the Corporate Board Member's "Top 50 Women in Tech" list and Hot Topics' Top 100 Women in Tech. In 2018, Heidi was named the Financial Woman of the Year ...
Innovation has long been thought of as crucial to an organization's success. But, too often, there seems to be little innovation (and diversity) within the organization's board. On this episode of The Corporate Director podcast, Margaret Whelan shares how boards can rethink value, innovation, growth, and diversity. Margaret is the CEO of Whelan Advisory, and also serves on the boards of the Housing Innovation Alliance, Mattamy Homes, John Burns Real Estate Consulting, and various other non profit boards. What we talked about: Rethinking a firm's value An ROI-only approach is no longer the only measure of value You have to balance innovation with core business investment Value creation requires creative thinking Innovation is at the core of a company's performance DNA of the board itself affects a firm's innovative approach Suggestions for the future of boards in America: Resources we mentioned during the podcast: A joint report by EY and Corporate Board Member on governing disruptive technology ISS report on 2019 U.S. Board Diversity Trends You can find more interviews like this on our Corporate Director Podcast, hosted by Dottie Schindlinger and Meghan Day. A cancer diagnosis causes a trauma so powerful, it splits your life around that single point in time: the Before-Why, and the After-Why. Breast cancer survivor Diane Simard was the classic type A, small business owner, charging at 100 miles an hour when she received the diagnosis. She shaved her head before the hair fell out because she needed to be in control. Imagine spending $200 every six weeks to have your hair colored and cut for years – and now it’s on the floor. But Diane held her chin up and said to herself: “I’m going to save probably about $1,000 this year.” Diane Simard seed-funded the Center for Oncology Psychology (COPE), an organization that continues to change lives for the better. She hopes that with her efforts, more women would not have to go through the humiliation of feeling raw and naked in front of random passersby. Watch the episode: Listen to the podcast: The Evolution Of “Why” With Breast Cancer Survivor Diane Simard We’re incredibly fortunate. We’ve been welcomed into the home of Diane Simard (https://www.dianemsimard.com/) . We’re going to have a bit of a different podcast in that we’re going to talk about before-why and after-why experience. Diane, thanks for taking the time and extending the hospitality of your home. My pleasure, Bob. Thank you for being here. For the folks, if you would thumbnail sketch a little bit of background and then we’ll dig in. I wear many hats. I’m part Angel investor, businesswoman, philanthropist, a breast cancer survivor, and I’m also very passionate about bringing attention to the psychological impact that a cancer diagnosis can have on an individual. It’s interesting when we were talking before we started the episode at the various directions we could go. You were the classic type A, hard-charging, small business owner, development person, 100 miles an hour, and you had an event. I don’t know if it was a routine exam or what, but take us to that experience for you. I was 49 and a half years old and maybe it’s this way from men too, but certainly for women, turning 50 is a big deal. There are a lot of changes that happen to our body during that time. At 49 and a half years old in January 2015, I had my mind set that the next phase of my life was going to be a lot more peaceful. The previous decade had been very challenging business-wise. I had invested in a lot of startup companies and had not had much success. The success that I’ve had came from those companies that I was not involved with. My ego had been hurt, but I was ready to live peacefully for things to be a lot calmer. I served on the boards of directors of several of the companies that I invested in. I was on the board of a bank that failed, and so the stress level had been monumental. I did what I was told to do, I’d had annual mammograms since I was 40 because I’d had a benign cyst when I was 40. It was routine and I didn’t expect anything would be different that year, but I got a phone call finally saying that the results were concerning. I was called back for what’s called a diagnostic mammogram and also an ultrasound test. It was during that ultrasound test that the ultrasound technician let it slip. I’m an inquisitive person. I have a journalism degree. I’m always asking “Why,” the questions. She sat me up and she pointed it out and to me it looks like snow on an ultrasound screen. I said, “How can you even tell what that means?” She said “I’m not supposed to say anything but it doesn’t look good.” That was the day that I likely suspected something was wrong. The radiologist came in, he didn’t even want to look at anything, and he said, “We’re going to have to have a biopsy to determine that.” All of a sudden my morning went from, “Got to get to the office. We got to do these things now”...
