We've done a huge amount of work on analytics and data. When we started delivering something to the office market, it was something that was predictable, something pretty stable, and now we've just seen everything transforming. [06:20] Say I'm one of the tenants, what value do I get out of this product? An individual employee in a building is going to have the technology on their mobile phone and will be able to do a whole range of things in that workplace; from booking different meeting spaces, being able to work in different places to being able to use your phone as an access badge. Connecting you to those services and features as well as making your day in the building a lot happier and easier. Bringing perks to employees, thinking of discounts in the vicinity, or promoting local foods and beverages. [09:25] You have some well known investors; Insight Partners, JLL Spark, Navitas Capital, Cushman & Wakefield and Suffolk Capital. This has allowed you to grow across North America, UK and Europe. Are there any areas of focus or growth for the business which you are looking at? It varies from region to region so in Europe, we are consolidating what we deliver across those territories. Making sure that we can service a customer in all the different languages, all the different territories and all the different technologies. [11:20] You acquired Office App. How did that come about and what does it mean for the business? You also have a fantastic culture; how do you sort of balance that with the acquisition? They were a direct competitor of ours in the European market but our cultures weren't miles apart. What they brought to the table was where we had gaps and vice versa. [13:25] How does ESG play into obviously tenant experience? It is a necessity right now for real estate because they actually have to take action, they have to reduce their carbon footprint but they don't necessarily know how to do that yet. From the employer's perspective, this is becoming more important because we are in a great resignation period and people are looking for new employment opportunities. [15:50] Can you talk us through how HqO can help clients achieve their ESG goals? ESG = environmental, social, and governance. Social: Our customer success team can implement for our clients can be things like events that are going to bring about inclusion or can push a different cause. We've been able to include a lot of guidance to users. [17:00] JLL Spark has made an investment into HqO, what does this mean for the whole of HqO? Their knowledge of the marketplace has been put forward by them in the early days when no one knew who we were and it was really fundamental. They provide introductions that ratify who we are. Our clients know and trust JLL and their evaluations. [19:25] What's next for 2022 in HqO, in each of your regions? The great resignation and people in work spaces are really driving that more holistic experience for both users of our product and people in buildings. With our acquisition of Office App, we have acquired a lot of knowledge about the corporate market. The trend right now for us is; what can the landlord give to their tenant to enhance that tenant experience, to make the experience in the building as attractive as possible. Enriching the experience for the employee and creating that engagement for them in their workplace in general, not just the building. Landlords and corporations desperately want to understand more about their population. A big trend of 2022 in the real estate world, in France, is satisfaction, how do we gauge satisfaction? [23:40] The ‘LMRE' part, Louisa asks the guests to talk about: Lessons learned in your career Julia: Revolutions don't happen overnight but they do happen. To make revolutions happen, you need to keep pushing, you need to have energy, but you also need to have patience. Mention a person, product or service Samuel: Some of our early adopters, some of our customers that have got innovation teams that wanted to test the product and innovate, evolve, work with us. Rewarding parts of working in the space: Julia: Seeing my clients not refer to tenants anymore but rather as users. What are you most Excited about for the future of the space?: Samuel: A more holistic approach. The big goal is the way that physical space will be totally connected, be it whether you are in a residential component of it, whether you're in an office component of it, whether you're a public visitor. It's not about tenants anymore, it's about customers. My guest today is Paul Preston, CEO of TechNL, an organization that represents NL's advanced tech sector, where local companies are punching well above their weight globally. Paul is a former director at the Conference Board of Canada, and holds a BComm and MBA from Memorial University. He is passionate about the east coast tech scene and it shows! In this episode you'll learn: What's happening in NLs hot tech sector and what's ahead in the future How new leaders (and non-tech folks) can tap into the career potential of the tech sector What companies are changing the game Paul's biggest lesson as a new manager....and more! Setting Up Clear Expectations and Accountabilities If you become too friendly without giving your team members or employees a clear picture of what the goals are, what you expect from them, and what their responsibilities are, things can become complicated later. And it will be frustrating for you as a leader and for everyone else you're leading because you did not make the expectations and accountabilities clear to them in the beginning. Getting Into The Tech Industry As much as we call it the tech sector, half the jobs are not actually tech jobs. There's marketing, accounting, sales, customer success, business development, et cetera. That's one thing we want to demystify to people is that you don't need to have a software development or coding background to get into the tech industry. There are other roles that are needed in this industry that people outside of this industry can definitely get into. The Slow Path to Success As a young person, you want to achieve so much especially in your career, but sometimes you just have to stick somewhere and learn, build a base of knowledge and gain an experience set. How do you cover a wide base of your target market without spending a ton of time and resources talking to each one of them? Jacob Perez has been investing in the Hamilton, Ontario real estate market since he was 23 years old and now has a portfolio of close to 10 million dollars with 40+ doors. Jacob is a Partner and Mortgage Agent with Synergy Mortgage Group, offering a digital experience backed by real people, working with both real estate investors and first-time homebuyers helping them leverage real estate to build wealth. Jacob also has experience in analytics and digital marketing with a BComm from McMaster University and Masters in Management Analytics from Queens University. In this episode, Jacob shares how he brings his digital marketing experience to the real estate investing world and the mortgage industry and helps him grow those businesses. If you're someone new to the real estate investing world, make the most of his thoughts and insights on where social media posts are concerned and which platform gives you the best traction. How about curating instead of creating content? He's got a lot of recommendations when it comes to brand communication. What if you don't yet have a story to tell, or you're not experienced enough to be putting yourself as a podcast guest? He knows how to flip the script and let it work to your advantage. He talks about a non-sleazy way of building trust and relationships for your brand building and marketing. This is the kind of route that had him a steady flow of clients through the years rather than just running an ad that you don't get anything when no one clicks. Get insider insights into where the mortgage industry is heading and why more people are interested in it. He assures everyone not to be scared of personally branding themselves. He states the many reasons why you shouldn't have to worry or avoid it. Topics Covered: 02:34 - How the digital experience at Synergy avoids geographical constraints and allowed for a much larger target audience 03:39 - What he considers the biggest differentiator in the mortgage world 04:28 - How Synergy works 05:22 - What the synergy brand is all about 06:44 - How he brings his digital experience to the real estate and mortgage world 08:56 - What participating in forums can do for your real estate investing brand 10:08 - A non-threatening way to build trust and relationship for your brand 11:02 - Forms of content and other communication you can use to build and market your brand 13:56 - Three things you can do in terms of your social media posts 16:09 - Thoughts on where the mortgage industry is headed 19:29 - Real estate investing turning into not just people consider doing but something they need to do 21:33 - Real estate investing as a ticket to freedom and lifestyle for millennials nowadays 23:00 - The kind of content you can put out there for branding and marketing 23:48 - Favorite personal brand that he really looks up to 24:52 - Books he is recommending 25:51 - Favorite resource that has been the best source of business and entertainment for him 27:14 - Which social media to focus on when you start building your brand 28:02 - What he believes in life 28:41 - His recommendation to people on building a brand 29:35 - What prevents people from building a brand? Key Takeaways: "And the beauty of forums or content or things like that, are a little bit different than the ads we do, is that they live online forever. So it's not like an ad where if they didn't click on that one-week campaign, you don't collect anything from it. This stuff is potentially generating new leads for years to come and things like that." - Jacob Perez "I came from a digital marketing background, a consulting background, and from the very beginning, which is a couple of years before the pandemic, we've never really done the face-to-face thing. And that allows you to have a much bigger target audience and don't have that geographical constraint." - Jacob Perez "I don't want to look like a billboard, and scream the mortgage rates and come at you from the perspective of, 'I'm a mortgage agent' rather, 'I'm willing to help you because I am willing to help you naturally, it's not fake.' If you're a real estate agent, but you have an Instagram page about home design, and you're consulting people in home design, it's a non-threatening way to build a relationship and trust and eventually transfer them over to your services." - Jacob Perez "I think there are more and more people entering the mortgage industry. The barrier to entry is very low. The other thing is, it's going to be the rise in technology, and you're going to see all the major five banks competing on who could have the best tab to have the best streamline mortgage experience." - Jacob Perez "I think real estate investors are a great niche because I think they're the least or rate-sensitive niche, and they appreciate you the most, whereas, some other type of buyers, you just might not see them for another five years plus kind of thing." - Jacob Perez "If anyone out there is looking to build a brand-related business or things like that, you just have to have the courage to go forward and do it. There are so many people who are afraid to brand themselves that just by that alone, your competition is actually very little, you'd be surprised. The kind of people that you're trying to attract, you will attract." - Jacob Perez Connect with Jacob Perez: Instagram Connect with Paul Copcutt: reibranded.com LinkedIn Email: podcast@paulcopcutt.com Music: Thank you to Zoax for the intro music

"Believe in yourself, sooner." – Tammy Heermann Today my guest is Tammy Heermann, a keynote speaker who's passionate about advancing women and high potential talent. I had the pleasure of seeing Tammy in action five years ago at a corporate offsite, and I appreciated her commitment and message. Currently residing in Toronto, Tammy holds a BComm from the University of Saskatchewan and a MSc from the London School of Economics. Before founding her own company in 2018, she was SVP of Leadership Transformation at Lee Hecht Harrison. In today's episode, we cover: -The importance of new leaders owning the entire experience. Management is difficult and rewarding, and new leaders must embrace both the good and the bad aspects of their role. -Prove possible. Building confidence becomes easier when you prove to yourself that it can be done. What have you attempted that you once thought was impossible? Regardless of outcome, you made it feel possible. -Reframe your story. Catch yourself when you start to say, "I can't, shouldn't..." etc. Reflect on why you automatically default to this way of thinking. Reframe and think about what is needed for you to say "I can, I will, I may, I am.." instead. -And much more! If you find this episode valuable, please rate us on Apple Podcasts! Women Empowerment and Why It Matters The experiment's hypothesis was that women would reduce their career aspirations if they were told that they weren't good at something. So at the beginning of the test, women had set higher expectations than the men in the study. And when the women were told that they performed equally well for this fake test as the men, they kept their career aspirations. But when they were told that they did worse than the men, they significantly reduced their career aspirations. Misconceptions About Working Women The common assumption is that women are less ambitious especially when they're in their family planning years. But what large studies have shown is that women actually seek balance and will make it work when their organizations are seen as investing in them and giving them opportunities and acknowledging their work. The Importance Of Speaking Up Some women think it's safer to not say anything. And I'm here to argue that it's actually not safer because then people think that you have nothing to add to the conversation, or that you don't know anything, or that you're too lightweight to operate on high-level responsibilities. And so the risk of not speaking up, I believe, outweighs the risks of speaking up. By not saying anything, you're actually putting yourself in a worse position. Holistic Dermatology indeed exists. And it’s all about healing your skin with Naturopathic Medicine. To explain how Holistic Dermatology works, join me and my guest, Dr. Stacey Shillington in this episode. Acne Struggles Dr. Stacey Shillington grew up in Alberta in the 80s and dealt with acne. At the time, she had no idea what Naturopathic Medicine or Holistic Dermatology was. As a teenager, she tried topical creams, and her doctor even put her on the birth control pill to control her acne. For a few years, everything was fine. But in her late 20s, Dr. Stacey Shillington wanted to go off birth control. She got into yoga to get into her body and get interested in health. Eventually, Dr. Stacey Shillington decided to get off the birth control pill. As a result, her skin completely flared up. She recalls being in Asia at the time traveling the world. When this happened, it changed Dr. Stacey Shillington’s personality. She was outgoing before the flare up and turned to hide away from the world. Dr. Stacey Shillington was shocked at how much her acne changed her personality. Then when she went back to Toronto, Dr. Stacey Shillington couldn’t face going back to her old job nor meet her friends. “Doctors suggested many things. Looking back, I’m surprised I didn’t go for those options because I was so desperate. But something inside me said that wasn’t the solution,” recalls Dr. Stacey Shillington. She adds, “I spent a ton of money trying everything out there. So, I spent all my time researching skin care. Not much made my skin better. I was married when I went off the birth control pill, and my skin flared up. Then I ended up getting divorced.” Seeking Natural Remedies Somebody then suggested to Dr. Stacey Shillington to see a Naturopathic Doctor. The Naturopathic Doctor wasn’t able to completely clear her skin, but the doctor really changed Dr. Stacey Shillington’s philosophy on health care and eventually fast-tracked her journey to learn about Holistic Dermatology. “She said my skin is like this because there is an imbalance in my body. And the way to heal your skin is to balance your body and find the root cause of your acne,” shares Dr. Stacey Shillington. “So, I went back to school to become a Naturopathic Doctor, so I could learn how to do this.” Realizations Dr. Stacey Shillington realized acne and skin care problems are debilitating to people. They affect our quality of life. And the solutions out there are not solving the problem. There’s a huge void. So that is what inspired Dr. Stacey Shillington to go back to school and learn all about Holistic Dermatology. “My whole career as a Naturopath has been focused on treating the skin, learning how to heal the skin, really helping people get their lives back and living their lives fully,” Dr. Stacey Shillington said. More To Learn A year after graduation, Dr. Stacey Shillington started working in a dermatology clinic in Toronto. She worked there for about 11 years. Time and work allowed her to become proficient in her career. “When I was a Naturopathic Doctor studying, they always said the gut and the skin are intimately related. And it’s true. Your skin is often a reflection of what’s going on in your gut,” said Dr. Stacey Shillington. Dr. Stacey Shillington also said that there are tons of research in the last 6 to 10 years about the microbiome. There are a hundred trillion microbes that live in our gut and on our skin. And when there’s an imbalance in the microbiome in the gut, eventually that imbalance is going to present itself on the skin. Right Diet According to Dr. Stacey Shillington, changing your diet and eating foods that are less inflammatory is essential. This is to heal your skin and to reduce inflammation in the gut. Healing gut is critical to improving your skin. “You can be eating the very best diet, but if your gut is in trouble if you have an overgrowth of certain pathogens, that has to be addressed as well in addition to changing the diet. This is to heal the skin fully,” Dr. Stacey Shillington advises. She adds, “I get my patients into an anti-inflammatory diet. There are certain foods out there that cause inflammation more than other foods. Dairy is a very inflammatory food especially for people who have acne.” Recommended Foods Sugar is a drug in itself. And Dr. Stacey Shillington says it impairs insulin sensitivity. It leads to high androgens and again points to acne. High sugar fruits, maple syrup, and honey also have the same effect. “It’s not that you can never eat these foods again. But you cannot eat these foods while you are healing the gut and reducing inflammation in the body,” said Dr. Stacey Shillington. Dr. Stacey Shillington on the contrary, reveals that berries are amazing for acne patients. It is because berries reduce inflammation and have a low glycemic index. They’re not likely going to spike insulin levels. “I also love cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli, arugula, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts detoxify the liver. Food is a fantastic medicine, and it can help the body function so much more efficiently. It sets the stage for diving in to start healing the skin,” Dr. Stacey Shillington said. Other Foods To Avoid Dr. Stacey Shillington shares that doctors at the turn of the century used to call acne diabetes of the skin. So, treating acne as a metabolic condition is often one of the keys to solving it. “I love berberine. It is amazing for acne. Not only does it help regulate the blood sugar, but it also helps support the liver, and it is also anti-microbial. So, it helps solve any dysbiosis in the gut,” Dr. Stacey Shillington said. According to Dr. Stacey Shillington, chocolate is so inflammatory for people with skin problems because it contains theobromine. She says there was a May 2014 study where it showed that theobromine could increase acne. Thus, dairy, sugar, and chocolate are the foods that should be looked at if you have inflammatory skin disorders. The other food as well that many people find surprising is oatmeal. Dr. Stacey Shillington says oatmeal contains an element that decreases sex hormones binding globulin in the blood. “And when you have decreased levels of it, you have more testosterone in the blood. Testosterone is an androgen and contributes to the production of acne,” explains Dr. Stacey Shillington. To get started, Dr. Stacey Shillington recommends that for three days, eat vegetables, low glycemic index fruits, lean proteins and see how you feel. If you feel better than you did when eating grains, that is a sign that you need to spend some time not eating grains while you are healing and balancing your body. “And I’m not saying forever because some starchy carbs are essential. Gluten is also so inflammatory. I can’t heal skin when people are eating gluten,” said Dr. Stacey Shillington. Recommended Oils Dr. Stacey Shillington said when there are too many omega-6 fatty acids in the body, it’s highly inflammatory. It is found in soybean oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, peanut oil, corn oil, a lot of other veggie oils. Instead, focus on oils like olive oil which has omega-9 fatty acids, avocado oil, and coconut oil which is saturated fat. Also eat foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, mackerel, sardines, organic eggs, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and flax seeds. Dr. Stacey Shillington also advises to be aware of the oils we are using so we can reduce inflammation. “Olive oil should be used raw. When it’s heated up at a certain temp, it starts to oxidize. That will create inflammation. So, cook with avocado or coconut oil. Fish oils can be beneficial, and it can make a difference on the skin,” Dr. Stacey Shillington said. She adds, “But for acne, I would never recommend fish oils. It’s one of the supplements that will contribute to acne. It’s much better to address other skin conditions like psoriasis.” Dr. Stacey Shillington also mentions that every single cell of our body is composed of fatty acids. So, to have a healthy body, we have to make sure those cell membranes are indeed nourished. “There’s a moisture barrier on the skin, and it looks like a brick wall. If the fatty acids are deficient, that brick wall is going to start to break down,” said Dr. Stacey Shillington. “And things that are not supposed to get into the body are going to get into the body and vice versa. So, it’s important to keep that moisture barrier intact to half healthy skin.” Genes We all manifest imbalances differently. Dr. Stacey Shillington says it’s based on our genes. But 90% of our health is determined by our lifestyle. Diet, sleep, and stress can also improve or worsen our skin condition. “When you’re stressed and prone to acne, three different biochemical pathways that are activated in the body that contribute to acne,” said Dr. Stacey Shillington. She adds, “Exercise is also an important thing. Mindset is also huge. Positive mindset creates resilience against stress.” Contributing Factors How much sunlight, regular eating, sleeping, and wake times are also factors that contribute to healthy skin. Dr. Stacey Shillington also says relationships and resentments play a significant role as well. Our emotions also play a significant role in good skin health. Meditation is essential, and Dr. Stacey Shillington says skin health is better when people practice self-love. You need to be relaxed for your body to heal. “Make sure your liver is supported, do detoxes and work on your gut. Try to work on your gut before you get off birth control pills. You want to be balanced as possible,” advises Dr. Stacey Shillington. She adds, “When you’re on birth control, you’re not making any natural estrogen or progesterone. It’s shutting down your natural hormone production. And it’s also suppressing androgens which are the hormones that are going to cause acne.” Effective Cleanse Dr. Stacey Shillington recommends Manuka honey to cleanse. She also said that if you don’t have a microbiome that disrupted, you can use oil to cleanse, which is very beautiful and nourishing. “If you do have a microbiome imbalance, which will result in fungal acne, use something like micellar water. Cleansing should be incredibly gentle. For moisture, use aloe vera gel or jojoba,” Dr. Stacey Shillington advises. She adds, “In the palm of your hand, put about a teaspoon of aloe vera gel and a teaspoon of the oil of your choice. Mix it vigorously with a finger for 30 seconds until it turns into a lotion. Apply to face and add essential oils if you like.” Skin Care Classes Dr. Stacey Shillington has some amazing classes that will teach you how to take care of your skin. Topping off the list is her 7-week Clear Skin Program which you can also sign up via my link www.learntruehealth.com/clearskin. There’s a new module each week, and the lessons are simple yet effective. Another excellent program is Dr. Stacey Shillington’s 8-Week Anti-Aging Skin Care Program. Like the 7-week program, it’s very holistic and effective as well so make sure to check it out on her website. “I want to change the way the skin is approached. My experience and the treatments available right now are just not helping people and often making skin situations even worse. My mission is to help change that. Get some real healing going on with our skin,” said Dr. Stacey Shillington. Bio Dr. Stacey Shillington has been practicing Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto for over twelve years with some of the city’s top dermatologists. John McInroy is a South African born social activist, philanthropist, social entrepreneur, ultra endurance athlete, international field hockey player, actor and vegan yogi. John and I got super deep in this session covering topics of how he regained love for himself and in turn spreading that love with like minded people. John's charisma sone through the entire time and he talks how he made a conscious decision to focus that energy towards the the health of the planet and all sentient beings. This guy creates and innovates but most importantly he has an innate ability to inspire people to find their true self. Born in South Africa, John McInroy spent most of his childhood in England before returning to com- plete his schooling in Cape Town. He has a BComm from the University of Cape Town and an MBA from University College Dublin in Ireland. He attended the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, as an MBA exchange student. An enthusiastic team player, John also represented South Africa in hockey. While living in Dublin, the red socks (known as the shoOops!) came to life in 2007 when a very close friend staying with him decided to return to work in South Africa. Inspired by a story of three South African prisoners of war who had been captured at the Siege of Tobruk in 1942 and vowed to each other that should any of them make it back alive, they would wear red socks to remember each other and always be “together”. John and his friend made a promise that they would wear red socks every Friday. Red Sock Fridays have since grown into a global movement, with the socks being worn in more than 70 countries in the world – spanning all 7 continents. More importantly is what they represent and how they bring together and impact the lives of many people. John was awarded the “Ideas for the Future” scholarship by the University College of Dublin’s Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, in recognition of his dream to connect people all over the world one pair of red socks at a time. In 2010, the story of Phil Masterton-Smith whose nickname was “Unogwaja”, the zulu word for a hare, made its way to John. In 1931, Masterton-Smith became the youngest ever Comrades winner, aged 19, which is a record that still stands to this day. However, in 1933, Masterton-Smith was living in Cape Town and couldn’t a ord the train fare to get to the start of the Comrades Marathon. He refused to give up and cycled across the country to take part in the race. Masterton-Smith lost his life on 5th June 1942 in the Battle of Tobruk. In 2011, the first ever Unogwaja Challenge took place. It began as a 1650 km bike ride in 10 days across South Africa from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg followed by the Comrades Marathon on day 11. Today, The Unogwaja Charitable Trust has been established and founded by John. The cycle journey and the red socks continue to unite people from all over South Africa and around the world but it is John’s mission to support primary education as a means to empower South African people, and address the significant inequalities the majority of South Africa still contend with that is at the core of Unogwaja, the red socks and John McInroy. In 2015, John completed the Unogwaja journey on foot to allow more people to become a part of the movement and call it their own. John inspires people to join together and be the best they can be. And while he may be a uniquely gifted orator, John prefers to be judged on his actions. With a somewhat spiritual journey and pulling himself out of the all consuming world of his charities, John explored and studied his 300 hour yoga teacher training in India and a tantra course in Thailand. These passages in life opened up a new world of love and compassion that motivated him to write his first autobiography aptly named Butterfly Man that launches on 22 February 2018.
