Acclaimed debut novelist and award-winning poet Jeanette Horn spoke to me about writing experimental poetry, getting a fateful call from the Iowa Writer's Workshop, and the magical realism in her debut novel PLAY, WITH KNIVES. Jeanette Horn is an Iowa Writers' Workshop MFA program graduate and was a Maytag Fellow. Her debut novel, Play, With Knives, is described as the story of “A struggling theater troupe [that] tours the Midwest by surreal train—where aspects of their plays come to life and wreak havoc—in this inventive literary novel.” Elizabeth Gilbert, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Eat Pray Love, said of the book, "Play, With Knives is a work of wondrous imagination—a dream from which I did not want to awaken." Jeanette also earned a BA in English from the University of Texas, where she won several Adele Steiner Burleson Awards for poetry and essay writing. Her work has appeared in MARGIE, Poetry International, Stand, Washington Square, and other journals. And while we're at it, let's talk with Dr. Rachel Hope Cleves about how conceptions of food and sex informed one another in the minds of Americans in the 19th and 20th centuries. This week Hannah is chatting with Kerry Spark, former West End actor who is now a dedicated yoga instructor and sound healer.Kerry shares his journey of finding balance in the fast-paced city of London. After years of moving in and out of the city, he realised that the demands of urban life left him burnt out and disconnected. Through travels across the world, including experiences reminiscent of "Eat Pray Love," Kerry discovered that true home isn't a place - it's a state of mind. Now, he helps others find their own sense of home and inner peace amidst the chaos of city living, offering tools to recenter, realign, and reset.Kerry created HAUS OF SPARK, a transformative wellbeing practice that blends yoga, meditation, breathwork, sound, aroma, music, and light therapy. Designed to empower and liberate, it helps individuals connect with their personal energy frequency through a sensory-rich experience.During the pod, Hannah and Kerry chat about what sound healing is, how it works, and the benefits it brings, discussing how specific frequencies and vibrations can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support emotional and physical well-being.Hannah has personally attended one of Kerry's new immersive experiences and she loved it! As always, Hannah asks all the questions, and as a huge sound bath fan herself, shares her own ideas and experiences. Whether you're seeking to deepen your practice or craving something more immersive than your usual weekly routine, this episode will leave you inspired to explore the power of sound and the profound effects it can have on the mind, body, and spirit
"You actually have permission to orient your life according to your nature rather than according to your culture and what you were taught was expected of you" - Elizabeth Gilbert, Living an Imperfectly Perfect Life - In Conversation with Sarah Grynberg Welcome to Episode #105:After three days in Sydney pondering a workshop with Elizabeth Gilbert I come away with this share. It was a gift to myself to just get away for a few days, number one there was that. Number two, I could have just gone there to see the tsunami of women of all ages ready, pens and journals in hand waiting. There were people of all ages, including some men, one beside me scrawling notes, trying to catch what poet she quoted, all listening, waiting, watching, talking and mostly just feeling her words ricocheting off the podium where she stood. In such an experience there is before, there is then and then there is after. …. it's the holy trinity… And so it has been many years of knowing her work from afar, reading her books, loving her books and Liz sharing the art of creative living. For most of us it did start with the iconic ‘Eat Pray Love' - for some it was the love story, for some the epic travel journey, for some the long pasta lunches in Italy, for some it was the spiritual seeking and the searching for herself. For me, it was everything. Livy was in my belly when I first read ‘Eat Pray Love', and she is now sixteen years old. I have had three kids, and managed to live a creative life and stay married, in my mind it is quite the endurance test. It is lovely to see her and listen to her to talk, but it is bigger than that, Liz Gilbert does the work. She questions and she calls it out, and she is willing to ride the wave and get dumped a few times. And if you see her live, you are with her walking into the fire, you are warmed and you are transformed, rising from the flames, anew and alive to whatever you are calling in next! This share I go all the way in the deep end of living my own personal journey and feeling the rumble of change and growth and my own potential hovering in the wings as I share this podcast. It is creative living and I wouldn't change any of it - it's a grand adventure and a joy to share along the way…..Find all Shownotes at michellejohnston.lifeBuy my new book: In the Shadow of a Cypress - An Italian Adventure Book Link for my MichelleJohnston.life© 2025 A Writer In Italy - travel, books, art and lifeMusic Composed by Richard Johnston © 2025Support the show

Jesse Eisenberg owes it all to an internet pop-up ad. A few years ago, while at an impasse with a screenplay about two friends on a trip to Mongolia, the writer-director and star of movies like The Social Network read an ad for “Auschwitz tours - with lunch.” And that jarring phrase unleashed an avalanche of ideas about, as he puts it, “the irony of wanting to connect to your ancestors' pain but at the same time not being willing to experience any pain yourself: stay at the Radisson, eat your continental breakfast, have your croissant in the morning and your coffee in the van going to a concentration camp.” Skip forward to 2025, and the film unlocked in his imagination by that ad – A Real Pain – is an awards season frontrunner, nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor at this year's Oscars. Its story of two cousins – David, played by Jesse, and Kieran Culkin as Benji – on a Holocaust “trauma trip” through Poland is a moving meditation on the shame it's easy to feel in today's world for feeling unsatisfied with life, when we think about the greater hardships our ancestors may have suffered. it's devastating and deliriously funny in equal measure, not to mention bold in how it refuses an Eat Pray Love narrative of having international travel solve these characters' problems back home. In A Real Pain, Culkin's erratic livewire Benji ends up exactly back where he started – but we as an audience are changed. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Jesse tells me about how the film worsened rather than resolved his complicated feelings around what pain he's entitled to feel. We get into that devastating final shot at the end of the film and why it is we feel the urge to connect to our pasts, with services like Ancestry and 23andMe. Listen out also for the parts of Jesse's life he folded into the script – such as his use of medication and medication to tackle OCD and depression – and how Jesse reflects on the unanswerable question of, how much grief to allocate to the terrible situation in the world right now, before we cease functioning. It's a fascinating chat about a fascinating film.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. In this episode I had the rare and wonderful opportunity to interview a personal hero of mine, the author of Big Magic and Eat Pray Love, writer, true creative and teacher, Elizabeth Gilbert. We discuss why the idea of 'purpose' is incorrect and making us confused and anxious, how to identify your calling, the difference between a career, hobby, job and calling, and how she managed setbacks and failure. We also discuss the creative process, her wisdom for imposter syndrome and how to let go of your worry and anxiety and have an authentic, true human experience. Listen now! Welcome back to The Twelfth House Podcast! Let me give you the sparkly SparkNotes version of this delightfully chaotic guide to understanding your own personal drama factory (aka your subconscious). This is essentially a 11-day deep dive into why you keep self-sabotaging like it's your job — except plot twist! You're not actually sabotaging yourself at all. *gasp*Key revelations that hit harder than your 2am existential fears:* Your patterns aren't trying to ruin your life — they're just overprotective helicopter parents doing their best impression of "helping" * Those "blocks" you keep hitting? They're actually just your system downloading updates at the worst possible moment (like an iPhone, but make it psychological)* Jealousy isn't toxic, it's your subconscious playing hot-or-cold with your actual desires (turns out hate-following people on Instagram is actually productive, who knew?)* Your fear isn't your enemy — it's more like that friend who's a little extra about your safety. Yes, they're dramatic, but their heart's in the right place. The Subconscious Audit guide walks through:* Pattern detection (aka "why do I keep doing That Thing™️")* Fear investigation (spoiler: it's usually protecting something valuable)* Tiny experiments (because nobody needs an Eat Pray Love moment to make changes)* Support systems (turns out willpower alone is giving very much "thoughts and prayers" energy)Bottom line: You're not broken, you're just running a particularly complex operating system that occasionally needs a reboot. Like Windows Vista, but make it personal growth. The goal isn't to become some enlightened being who floats above their patterns — it's about becoming fluent in your own chaos language. Think of it as learning to speak "fear" as a second language, complete with regional dialects and slang.Grab the Subconscious Audit here →
Description: At 24 years old, Jennifer Hatmaker was parenting her first diaper baby on no sleep as a stay-at-home mom and pastor's wife. By contrast, Jen's second-born, Sydney Hatmaker, spent half of her 24th year on a gap year travelling the world and banking a lifetime of memories. In this special two-part conversation, Sydney walks us through some of the best moments and lessons learned from her life-changing adventure, beginning in May in Berlin and ending in October in Vietnam. With stops along the way in Sicily, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, and Thailand, Sydney gives us some of her best tips for travelling solo on a shoestring budget. It might entail a 40-hour journey taking a car to a bus to a ferry to a bus, to another ferry, to a train, to a taxi, to a scooter, to a hostel, all to save $60, but the point is it can be done and she's here to inspire us all with tales from her adventure. Highlights from this conversation include: In our GenXcellence Travel-Edition, we reflect on what travel was like for us in the 80s-90s, before satellites and cell phones and Expedia (Sydney has never heard of Traveller's Cheques) Sydney gives us her best tips for getting into one of the world's most popular techno clubs in Berlin (shh! It's very hush-hush!) We learn about surfing camp on the coastline of the Portuguese Riviera Why you need to budget more for European travel than Asian travel and how you can eat in Asia on $4 a day Sydney talks about learning to be comfortable travelling on her own and being in her own company – something she thought she was already good at but was pushed to new limits And a lot more….. Be sure to tune in for part two of our conversation next week to hear how the story ends. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: I didn't have a phone for the last two months of my trip. I still had a laptop so when I was at the hostel on wifi, I could do research and book things but it was a different kind of travel. I made the most of it and it ended up being a bit of an adventure.I obviously had an initial reaction of panic (not having a phone) but then I felt this complete freedom. – Sydney Hatmaker I did have some big ideas that I would get something out of my system on this trip, that I would come home and settle down, get a real job, root down in one place but halfway through my trip I realized there is so much more (in the world) that I want to see. There's so much to do, so much to see and explore and so many ways to make it happen. – Sydney Hatmaker Travelling feels different and way more real when you're by yourself. I love my own company and my company is better than some random person that I'm not really connecting with. And realizing that, makes it really easy to connect with more people. – Sydney Hatmaker Resources Mentioned in This Episode: The 9 Enneagram Types Descriptions - https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-descriptions/ Skyscanner - https://www.skyscanner.com/ Rick Steves Travel Guides - https://amzn.to/41mKeFX Berghain Techno Club in Berlin - https://bit.ly/4gfaMNq Sagrada Familia - https://sagradafamilia.org/en/ Jen's MeCamp - https://bit.ly/3D1qX2I The Banana Pancake Trail - https://trail.bananabackpacks.com/banana-pancake-trail/ Hostel World - https://www.hostelworld.com/ Pyramid Yogshala Yoga School - https://pyramidyogshala.com/ Guest's Links: Connect with Jen! We're calling on Mark Butler, Minister for Health and Aged Care, to champion and approve funding for the next stage of the DNA Screen Project at Monash University, to move towards population-wide DNA screening for adult disease prevention. This trial initiative is providing life-saving genetic testing for hereditary cancers and heart disease, preventing tragedies before they happen and dramatically reducing the financial burden on Australia's healthcare system. Led by Professor Paul Lacaze and Dr Jane Tiller, the DNA Screen Project has already demonstrated the life-changing potential in a trial of 10,000 people aged 18 to 40 years at risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, Lynch syndrome, and familial hypercholesterolemia. Genetic variations affect 1 in 75 people, and with genetic testing now available, there is no reason why it should be restricted. Despite the clear benefits, publicly funded testing is currently available only to those who meet restrictive criteria. Every Australian, of any age, deserves the right to know if they fall within the 2% of the population at high risk, so they can take preventive action to protect their health. We want a population-wide, criteria-free screening program. A national initiative like this would put Australia at the forefront of preventive healthcare, ensuring that every Australian knows their genetic risks and can take steps to protect their future health. Here's why this matters: The DNA screening test can cost as little as $200-$400 per person—an affordable price for a program that has the potential to save lives and reduce long-term healthcare costs. The cost of cancer care alone to the Australian healthcare system is over $6 BILLION annually By identifying genetic risks early, we can reduce the number of people needing expensive treatments later, saving taxpayer dollars while preventing disease. The 10,000-person pilot completed study at Monash University has laid the groundwork for a scalable, nationwide DNA screening program. But to move forward, the project needs government funding to expand beyond the initial trial group and make this life-saving test available to every Australian who wants it, regardless of age or background. By signing this petition, you are joining a community voice advocating for a future where genetic screening for high risk genetic variations is accessible to everyone, and where preventive healthcare can truly save lives. We ask Mark Butler and the Australian Government to support funding for the next phase of the DNA Screen Project and allow this innovative program to become a nationwide, population-based screening initiative. Join us in calling for change. Let's ensure that every Australian, at every age, has the chance to know their significant genetic risks and take proactive steps to safeguard their health and the health of their families. The future of genetic testing is HERE - now we just need access to it. Sign now and make your voice heard—because access to life-saving genetic screening should be a right, not a privilege. Help us get 10,000 signatures. Join our movement to live healthier for longer. Shelley Craft and Amanda Attwood The Aging Project and You Must Try It , Co-Founders www.theagingproject.com

When the book Eat, Pray Love came out I was worlds away from grabbing my passport and hopping on a flight to find myself.I love the book (and love travel) and I think Elizabeth Gilbert is amazing, but the adventure she so beautifully describes; one woman's search for everything, wasn't happening for this woman. Not then.At the time EPL hit the stands I was hitting the gas on my Mom Taxi hard.Literally and figuratively. I was in the midst of raising & homeschooling 3 boys (which ends up being my most profound spiritual journey to date), caring for 3 dogs, 2 cats and trying to keep that crazy circus running as smoothly as possible. Most days it didn't.
"As the deadline to pay off Coyote Pass looms, tensions rise over how the family will divide the property. Meri takes an empowering solo trip to England, and Christine and Janelle host a graduation party for Savannah." Meri goes on a pathetic Eat Pray Love to look at a bunch of stacked rocks. Maddie puts on her boss babe hat and starts whipping Janelle into shape– while simultaneously Kody wishes he could screw Janelle so hard. Robyn is sick of pretending to like Meri and Savannah gets the worst graduation party the Browns have ever hosted. Go ahead and leave us a 5 star review– when we say we are open to feedback, we mean compliments! Thank you!

Another day, another kookalook collection of topics from us, including new lingo care of (honorary Bob) Jack Schlossberg, wrinkle makeup, minimalist shoes, LaGuardia Airport, and a straw cupdate. Wrinkle makeup—not what you think, probably! Check out a couple of looks by @shine__rising and rachy_mua. Related: crackle lips. In which we dip our toes into the minimalist shoes conversation: Gait Happens, Born to Run by Christopher McDougall, and The Infinite Race 30 for 30 doc by Bernardo Ruiz are all relevant on the content front. Some brands of interest: Muki, Vivo Barefoot, and Groundies. They kind of remind us of Prada Sport from the late 90s/early aughts, Miu Miu rope sandals, and ballet flats with wide toe boxes from Sandy Liang and Proenza. Also: Let's take this opportunity to shoutout Yoga Toes. We've been considering giving our ComfiLife a break and trying a kneeling chair. Memor and Varier are good-looking options! Elizabeth Gilbert is one of the most brilliant authors of our time. She authored ‘Eat, Pray, Love' which sold over 12 million copies and was then turned into a movie starring Julia Roberts. She's also written books like ‘Committed', ‘Big Magic' and ‘City of Girls'. Elizabeth shares so many teachings around vulnerability, connectedness, living a life that is led by love, and now how to become ‘a relaxed woman, pushing back on the expectations of what society wants from you'. Today we spoke about: Being an award winning writer who wrote about men and was sympathetic to the male experience, until she wrote the number 1 ‘chick-lit' book of our time. Funnily enough, the award nominations dried up. The shared experience of having everything that we are meant to ‘want' and feeling so deeply unhappy. How Liz used to drain herself by giving her everything to relationships, and how free she now feels being emotionally autonomous The facts about how marriage affects women: married women don't live as long as single women, they're more likely to report being depressed and anxious, they are more likely to have autoimmune conditions, more likely to be addicted to substances etc. How all of our lives could be titled ‘not exactly what I had in mind' The complexity of falling in love with someone knowing it will hurt other people that you care about Learning about loss through grief You can find Liz's Aus and NZ tour dates You can follow Liz on Instagram You can watch us on Youtube Find us on Instagram Join us on tiktok Or join the Facebook Discussion Group Tell your mum, tell your dad, tell your dog, tell your friend and share the love because WE LOVE LOVE! xx See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Masie & Stuart take a trip to the cruel and twisted realm of Ryan Murphy with his wildly successful 2010 film adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert's bestselling memoir Eat Pray Love. Garnering its fair share of criticism over the years, our hosts sample the film's bizarre brand of white feminism and its often racist portrayal of countries in the Global South, while trying to find the parts of its menu that are worthy of praise. The Church is a movement of God's people called out for a specific purpose. Here at Emmanuel Church, our purpose is lived out in our relentless pursuit of people far from God. While many of us deeply desire to see people come to Christ, several obstacles hold us back from going “all-in.” Obstacles such as uncertainty about how to begin a conversation, a lack of urgency, or feeling insecure about our Bible knowledge. In Week 1 of our series, “I Love My Church,” Pastor Matt Scobell draws from Matthew 9 to reveal the simplicity of Jesus' method for reaching the lost: eat, pray, and love. In this episode, Nicole talks about the complex relationship between body image, intuitive eating, non-corrupted exercise, and the impact of social media and parental influence on our self-talk and perception of ourselves and food and exercise. She explores how societal standards and unrealistic portrayals on social media can distort our views of our bodies, leading to negative self-talk and harmful behaviors. She also discusses the importance of intuitive eating and listening to our bodies' hunger and fullness cues, as well as engaging in exercise that is fun and fulfilling, rather than driven by guilt or punishment. She examines how our upbringing and parental attitudes towards food and body image can shape our own beliefs and behaviors, and offers strategies for cultivating a positive and empowering relationship with our bodies and food.
