Who says you can't come home again? Not Jeremiah Gracia! In October, our City announced Jeremiah had accepted the position of Director of Economic Development. He brings nearly two decades of economic and business development experience, relationships throughout the region, plus two degrees from his alma mater, Bowling Green State University. Brent Schwoerer is the Owner and Founder of Engrained Brewing Company. Raised on a family dairy and grain farm, Brent earned his bachelor's in mechanical engineering and a master's in human resources from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. After a decade in the corporate world — including two years in Brazil focusing on new product development — Brent established Engrained Brewing Co., which has been in operation for over ten years. In this episode… Are you pursuing your passion? People are motivated by many different things and sometimes passion and motivation can lead them to working in the corporate world. Other times, the corporate world can make people realize they're lacking something. For Brent Shwoerer, who founded Engrained Brewing Company in 2012, working as a corporate employee for ten years led him to realize he needed to chase his passion — outside of corporate America — and he persevered through great difficulties to make it happen. Armed with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a master's in HR, he left his job at Caterpillar Inc. to launch a locally-owned micro-brewery and farm-to-table restaurant. After initially struggling for three years to get a bank to loan him money, Brent's brewery has since celebrated being in business for a decade and he has gone from homebrewing to winning awards for his craft beer. On this episode of the Top Business Leaders Show, Rise25's Chad Franzen welcomes Brent Schwoerer, Founder and Owner of Engrained Brewing Co., for a conversation about doing whatever it takes to chase your passion. Brent shares how he realized he was missing out on his passions while grinding away as a corporate employee, so he decided to start his own local brewery. He discusses the difficulties he endured in getting a loan to get started, his award-winning craft beer, and the values his brand is built upon.
On October 15, Polish voters elected a new parliament, with a broad opposition coalition led by ex-Prime Minister Donald Tusk winning a majority of seats, according to official results published on Tuesday. If the opposition coalition is able to form a government, it will mean the end of the eight-year rule of the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party. Under PiS, press freedom in Poland came under increasing pressure, with the government borrowing from the illiberal playbook of Hungary's Viktor Orbán. A report published by IPI and its MFRR partners last month documented how media capture and the widespread use of vexatious lawsuits have been used to create a hostile climate for independent journalism in the country. PiS was also widely seen as undermining the rule of law and judicial independence in Poland, which sparked an ongoing conflict with the EU. This edition of MFRR in Focus explores what the opposition's victory might mean for press freedom and the rule of law in Poland. Our guest is Aleksandra Sobczak, deputy editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland's leading daily newspaper, which had a clear pro-opposition editorial line and has been vocal in its support for media freedom. Guests: Aleksandra Sobczak, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Gazeta Wyborcza. Producer and Host: Karol Łuczka, Eastern Europe Advocacy and Monitoring Officer at IPI. Denise started making granola and muesli for her family during the pandemic in 2020. She explains, ‘It started out of pure necessity just for my own consumption and my families' consumption – we love to eat granola and muesli'. After getting the thumbs up from her family she started to give her gourmet granola and muesli to a few friends and neighbours to see what they thought and that's when it took off and Engrained was born. Denise says, ‘I did not set out to start a business at all but somehow it has turned into one and I'm the first one surprised to be honest'. Denise says she wanted to make her granola and muesli recipes appealing because, ‘it was initially intended for my children and myself so it had to be something that I was happy to dig into every day and that I knew they would get excited about as well'. The recipes also needed to be healthy and nourishing, ‘because I didn't want to be running around preparing snacks all the time, so it sort of had to tick a few boxes but yes I definitely put a huge emphasis on the flavours'. She won't be pushed into picking out her favourite flavour and with names like ‘Très chocolat' Granola, Carrot Halwa Granola and Almond Cinnamon Crunch Granola I don't blame her! Sustainability is also very important to her, ‘I see small businesses are really the ones leading the change and really putting change in consumers hands' which is why you can get refills of her recipes at select refill shops (see www.engrained.co.uk for details). The interview was recorded on Wednesday 20th October at 12pm BST.For more info

It is easy to get very comfortable with our surface-level understanding of history. Most of the time it is generally consistent with the facts, except when it isn't. When it comes to how we regard the notorious regime of Josef Stalin and this particular period of Russian history, there are more than a few areas which have been analyzed and considered completely outside the context of the time in an ahistorical manner. This kind of thinking not only leads to rather annoying comparisons of Stalin with people like Vladimir Putin, but also deprives us of a fulsome understanding of events, motivations, and decisionmaking by the people involved. James Ryan and Susan Grant join the podcast to discuss their excellent co-edited volume, "Revisioning Stalin and Stalinism: Complexities, Contradictions, and Controversies," which is a collection of articles examining the controversies of Stalin's leadership and questions regarding the cult of personality surrounding him. "The past must be understood historically," says Ryan in the interview. "Somebody like Stalin, the Stalinist regime more generally, must be understood historically in its context in its development. And that applies as well to the president today, so these comparisons between Stalinism and Putinism are ahistorical not least because of ideology."

WOW! Today is a BIG day! It’s our 100th episode of the Epic Success Podcast! I feel like a kid in a candy store. Like, really? I got to 100?! Woohoo! Thank you for being with me along this incredible journey. I’ve learned so much over these past 20 years as an entrepreneur and Dr of Neuro-Psychology. It’s been a privilege to share some of those lessons in these 100 episodes! Today I want to share the key cornerstones of my message of these past 100 episodes and my mission to help you become the creator of your thoughts. If you are ready to learn how to change your brain for breakthrough results, then this episode is for you. The biggest take-aways from today’s episode are: “You are not hardwired to be an entrepreneur.” Your brain is designed to keep you safe and familiar, and as you know, entrepreneurship is full of risks. You must do the work to break down old neural-pathways and rewire new ones. Once you’ve laid down neural-pathways for success, that same system that was not working for you before is now beautifully working for your success. If it’s not working for you now, it’s because you still have stories that are automated in your subconscious that are taking you away from the very thing that you want. [4:15] “When you transform your brain, you transform your business.” Are you like millions of entrepreneurs searching for success in the next strategy, system, funnel, and course? Then you’re looking outside yourself for the secret to success. The truth is, it’s not the system, it’s in the way that you think about the system. Knowing that you can shift that puts all the power and control back into your hands. [15:17] “The stories that govern your daily actions and decisions about money, success, failure, and your worth - you can see evidence of those stories in your life, business, bank account, relationship, and health right now.” Our money stories permeate so many areas of what we’re doing. If you don’t have the success, impact, business, and income that you want right now, then you know that you have money stories that are running your subconscious. The great news is that there is a simple process to go through to recognize, remove, and rewire the mindset that you want, which I will be teaching you in the live virtual experience that starts March 28th! [20:36] To end this 100th episode, I’d like to leave you with two small, tangible wins that you can take away. Simple filter question: Stop and ask: “does this thought get me to where I want to be or take me farther away?” The most successful entrepreneurs think differently and are always assessing the quality of their thoughts. Engrained intention: Think about an intention that’s a way of being (ex: I want to be more joyful). Hold that intention in your body, feel what it feels like, and pause with it for a minute. Now set an alarm to go off every hour. Every time your alarm goes off, be aware of your intention. Where can you find joy, for instance? Where can you experience it, find evidence of it, and create more of it? Thank you for being a listener of the Epic Success Podcast! If you love this podcast and have found value, please subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a friend. It means so much to me! I can’t wait to bring you the next 100 episodes full of more amazing guests and help you to become the creator of your thoughts. ________________________________________________ You DO NOT want to miss this …. Engrained in us is a standard way of doing things. For early Christians, the law was engrained in them. Often, the story of Jesus was taken and appropriated into the religion of moralism and law. In fact, at Christmas, God interrupts the engrained patterns of achieving, earning, and striving. In Christ, we can go about our lives, but not simply as if things are business as usual.
The big foreign policy question of the day: how to calm down the North Korea nuclear crisis?, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on the task of turning around a 40 year-old, Deeply engrained company...and how his mother and his son influence how he thinks about business GUESTS: Sue Mi Terry, Gideon Rose, Bernard-Henri Lévy, Satya Nadella.
Download Episode! Hey there, lovely radicals... podcast time! This week on the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, it’s not just vulnerability time, it’s not just real, raw badassery time, no, it’s also ... Well, it’s actually the most fun episode with the most unexpected circumstances I’ve ever had. Mix that with the incredible depth of the conversation, and you’ve got a pretty unique ride ahead of you. And the mission for this one is pretty simple: It is to say, hey, who ever you are out there, you are not alone, you are not crazy, you are not broken... Recovery is messy like that. Eating disorders really come in all shapes and sizes, and they take many forms for the sufferer too. So, lovely radicals, It is my extreme pleasure to bring you Jennifer Rollin, a professional psychotherapist in private practice in Rockville, Maryland. Jennifer is an eating disorder and body image specialist, and expert writer and speaker. She is passionate about helping people to find freedom from eating disorders and body-hatred. Jennifer has completed certificates in CBT-E for Eating Disorders (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), and is a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. She is a member of The Junior Board of Directors for The National Eating Disorders Association, and her articles have reached thousands of people through print and online media including The Huffington Post, Psychology Today, FabUplus Magazine, Social Work Today Magazine... From out of her practice in Rockville, she offers eating disorder therapy and eating disorder recovery coaching to people worldwide. If you were wondering where the fun part of the situation comes in...... Well, listen for yourself! Jennifer talks about: – Why this very interview is proof that perfectionism is a hindrance to fully experiencing life – How she discovered Health at Every Size (HAES) and why she didn’t fully understand it at first – Why being weight-centric is an active hindrance to recovery from yoyo-dieting, disordered eating, eating disorders AND binge eating – Why she often gets frustrated when people completely misunderstand the message of HAES – When to invest in educating others about HAES and when to prioritize self-care and step back – Why it is so hard to recover into a world that actively promotes disordered eating and disordered exercise behaviors – How we can talk to ourselves when we’re struggling and there’s no one around who seems to understand – How weight-stigma in eating disorders treatment often hinders a full recovery for those who are in treatment, and prevents millions who suffer from actually GETTING treatment – What she would want the world to know about eating disorders and the myths surrounding them – Why the common depiction of eating disorders (anorexia, skeletally skinny, mostly white teenage girls) in the media actually represents the smallest percentage of how eating disorders manifest, and why this is detrimental for all of those who suffer and "don’t feel sick enough" – Why some of the sickest people are not officially diagnosable – What she means when she describes eating disorders as being "competitive and comparative diseases" – Her thoughts on exercise bulimia and why this – very common! – subtype of eating disorders is not being openly addressed more widely – What makes exercise bulimia so hard to overcome – How to reframe exercise behaviors in recovery from compulsive exercise, when the voice in our heads tells us that we "can’t rest" – How to decode those negative body thoughts and find what they really stand for – How to find out what our compulsive behaviors around exercise and food are really about – How to make behavioral changes and set small challenges that support recovery – Why discomfort is an inevitable result of going against our ED voice, and how to see that discomfort as a sign of success in recovery – How she would deal with a client who suffers from exercise bulimia – How she would address entrenched behaviors and habits/rituals that have been in place for years – Why it is so important (in any process of recovery) to find out what really brings us joy in life, and add those things into our lives that do NOT revolve around food or exercise – How we can start to decode and make sense of our are behaviors – How we can recognize moments of body neutrality and slowly create more of those – Why it’s important to ask ourselves "what would I like my life to look like in 5 years from now?" – How she addresses the fear of weight gain with her clients – How to find out what we really want when we say that we "just want to be thin" – How to give less of a damn about what other people think of our recovery, our looks, our eating, our weight or any other comments – How to see the gift in losing those people who only "loved" us for an artificial version of ourselves – Why this process of recovery is the doorway to finding those people who really love us for who we are – The advantage of getting into the mindset of "giving recovery a try", just as one would do with an experiment – Why we need to change behaviors first, in order for the thoughts to be able to adjust and change (or in other words, why there is no "thinking ourselves into recovery") – Why eliminating all restrictions is the crucial step in recovery from anorexia and bulimia – How, after eliminating all restrictions, the most important next step must be to eliminate all compensatory behaviors for eating – Why never to forget that eating disorders are sneaky, and so behaviors can sneak back in almost unnoticeably and suddenly we’re deep in unwanted behaviors again – Why having an accountability partner when reducing the amount and intensity of exercise can be the key to avoid denial... ... On this episode of Unconventional Genius, Jaclyn Baumgarten, CEO of Boatsetter, a peer-to-peer platform for boat rentals, shares advice on how to be a successful entrepreneur. Boatsetter is the #1 boat sharing community and leader in the boat sharing industry. During this episode, you will hear Jaclyn tell me about how she led the company to become a provider of over 4000 boats in 2500 locations. Before starting Boatsetter, Jaclyn Baumgarten did everything from launching new divisions in Fortune 500 corporations that grew to over a billion dollars, to spearheading one of the largest commercial real estate developments in Los Angeles. Along the way, she has learned a lot about how to lead and grow a technology company. Listen to this episode to hear more about Jaclyn and to gain insight from her experience. Turn a challenge into an opportunity Jaclyn Baumgarten started Boatsetter out of a love for boating and a desire to earn money for herself instead of for someone else. Investing your time and energy into something that you are passionate about can give you the motivation to press on even through the most difficult situations. Jaclyn shares about some really large hurdles she had to jump over in order to make her idea a reality. One of the biggest challenges to starting Boatsetter was solving the insurance problem. Under traditional recreational insurance policies, boat owners can’t rent or charter their boats. Rather than letting that be a setback, Jaclyn faced the challenge head-on and worked with insurance companies to develop a new kind of policy that would allow for peer-to-peer sharing. Growing a company into both a locally and internationally recognized brand After determining the legitimacy of the idea, the next step for Jaclyn was to understand market potential and secure funding from investors. While there was already a value proposition in place, the operational side wasn’t solidified. Jaclyn explains how being diligent in learning as much as you can while remaining flexible enough to make necessary changes can help you become a successful entrepreneur. Boatsetter’s model was proven in South Florida, but now has expanded all over the country and internationally as well. There is also great potential for continued growth by tapping into the 13 million privately owned boats in the United States alone. Regarding growth, Jaclyn says, “With any marketplace, it is essential to maintain the equilibrium between supply and demand.” How to be a successful entrepreneur by creating a compelling culture One of the major reasons Jaclyn Baumgarten says she decided to start her own business was the opportunity to develop her own company culture. Engrained in the DNA of Boatsetter is a culture where people feel valued and are expected to contribute in meaningful ways. Jaclyn talks about the importance of having alignment of vision and communication within the organization. There are several ways that the culture of Boatsetter is maintained. There are incentives given to employees who execute above and beyond the set expectations. There is also built in opportunity for honest and constructive feedback. Jaclyn shares with me her views on culture and how she continues to monitor it at Boatsetter during this insightful conversation. 3 keys to being a successful entrepreneur So much of what is learned in business comes from making mistakes. Though they often seem like setbacks, often mistakes can open the door for greater understanding that can help you become a successful entrepreneur. Hard work and determination can help counter the inevitable missteps that you will make while trying to get a startup off the ground. From being in business and management to now starting a successful tech company, Jaclyn has learned several keys to success. She has especially pertinent advice to entrepreneurs looking to start or lead their own companies. During our conversation, she gives 3 keys to success.
