In this episode of Us Anxious Folk, I am joined by Raymond - all the way from New Jersey - who shares his anxiety story. Raymond talks about his experiences with panic attacks and agoraphobia in a way that so many of us can relate to - from his first panic attack as a teenager (and the consequent hospital trip) to facing derealisation, fear of dying and bodily sensations, and a deep fear of being alone. We discuss the use of alcohol as a coping mechanism, staying in comfort zones, and navigating relationships when you are someone who deals with panic and limitations, and Raymond shares how he worked through his SVT (Supraventricular tachycardia) diagnosis, which can cause heart palpitations and an erratic and rapid heartbeat. There was so much about this conversation that I loved - Raymond is a very real and intensely likeable human, and I hope you get as much joy out of this episode as I did. Leah Guy and Matthew Branham, MAcOM, LAc, discuss powerful topics based on finding the harmony within our lives, living in harmony with the breath, and overcoming the fear of death. Yin & Yang, breathing with nature, finding acceptance and flowing with the expansion and contraction and not forcing through or disrupting are part of this conversation. The breath dynamic happens every day, every season, with every breath, and as with Yin & Yang, the human body also functions seasonally, and part of our conversation is about how death has come to be perceived as a loss, a fear, and a negative occurrence. Perhaps nature has a different intention. To find out more about Leah, visit her website. To find out more about Matthew, visit his website. Matthew received his Master's degree in Acupuncture and Oriental medicine (M.Ac.O.M) from the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine where he was clinically trained in acupuncture modalities from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and even France. Matthew's Chinese herbal medicine training is broad and includes both classical and modern approaches. He is licensed as an acupuncturist and herbalist in the State of New Jersey and is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).In addition to his acupuncture expertise Matthew has been a massage therapist specializing in Asian Bodywork therapy for over ten years. Matthew's passion is in facilitating patient's journey of healing on a holistic level. Recognizing and honoring that while we appear as separate individuals, in truth we are all deeply connected. Likewise, our mind, emotions, and body are not separate. Disease and pain are often more obvious symptoms of an underlying imbalance.
Is it possible that our fear of death prevents us from living fully? For over 20 years Sue Brayne has been helping people to transform their relationship with mortality as a therapist specializing in trauma, as well as through her end-of-life research, workshops and books on spirituality, consciousness, and dying.
Happy September everyone. I can't believe we're turning the corner to Fall and then the holidays already, again. The seasons we are falling into, pardon the pun, are of things dying annnnd recognizing the beauty that also surrounds it. Finding beauty in dying is usually challenging. For most of my life I had total fear around it, which I think began when I was 13 when my great uncle passed away. It was my first experience with someone I was close with dying. He was bigger than life and everybody loved Uncle Sam. My family flew to Chicago to go to his funeral and we stayed in his home, which really spooked me at the time because all his things and medicine were in place as if he were still there. At the funeral they had his casket open and I'll never forget how scared I was as I saw him under this red-ish light that was hanging above, and my grandfather loudly crying over his brother. It was the only time I had seen my grandpa cry. Needless to say that left quite the impression on me with regard to death and dying. And not a good one. Last year I happened to watch a TEDx talk on this topic with Dr. Martha Jo Atkins from 2013, which has over a million views. And when I heard her say, “When we educate families and the patient about the experiences of dying, there is less fear. And my goodness, we need less fear around death and dying” I grabbed my computer and wrote to ask her to be my guest on Loving Later Life. And I am so thrilled to tell you that she said yes! Dr. Martha Jo Atkins, is a dog-loving, (Ph.D.) end-of-life licensed professional counselor and counselor supervisor (LPC-S), coach, speaker , doula and author. Dr. Atkins has a thirty-year career helping children and adults negotiate end-of-life and grief. She is the founder of the Children's Bereavement Center of South Texas, served as Executive Director of Abode Contemplative Care for the Dying in San Antonio, and is the author of the book Signposts of Dying. She is the founder of Dying School, designed to build community while deepening conversations around end-of-life + aliveness. Now don't touch that dial! I can't wait to share this conversation with you and I do believe that it will have you thinking a little differently about death and dying. And I really want to have her back because there is so much more I want to talk about with her that we just didn't have time for. So get comfy, and let's let Martha Jo help us think about and talk about dying…

It would be impossible to do a series helping women when they get a breast cancer diagnosis if we don't talk about dying-or the fear of dying. For many people that is a conversation they don't want to have or it may be a conversation they don't want to have right now- which is understandable. Others find it therapeutic and helpful to have frank conversations about it. If this is you, please listen to this special episode, where guest presenter Louise Court talks to three women about how they have dealt with this most difficult subject, from facing up to the possibility of the end of life, to grief itself. They are joined on the panel by Dr Kathryn Mannix, who is a palliative care expert, and she provides down-to-earth advice and practical steps to manage such a traumatic experience. If this episode might be too distressing to contemplate, please listen to any of our other programmes, and return to this if -and when- you feel ready. We are traversing a pivotal time in our earthly evolution. Many people are exiting the material plane – dying from the physical body. You may have lost people close to you. It can feel scary. “What if… Please, not me. I'm not ready to go.” None of us knows when our time will come, or the time of those closest to us. The most important thing is how we spend our time here. It's important to communicate with those we care most about so we have no regrets. This week's Meditation & Healing Circle addresses the fear of dying and the importance of living with clear and open communications with those we love. What are the words you want to leave with those you care most about? What is the legacy of wisdom you want to leave behind? What blocks do you need to clear from within yourself so you can allow the love to flow between you? As we let go of our fear of dying, we can truly live and thrive in this NOW! Kristi is joined by Mary Karman of Heart Light Healing. Mary had a multi-level near-death experience in 2010 which she calls her "near LOVE experience". Mary shares messages and perceptions experienced "on the other side". Join us as we discuss the love that connects us and living with the knowledge that there is more to us than this human identity we wear. Sorry for sporadic audio dips on Mary's line. Despite invitations, there was no live caller for mini integrative mind-body-spirit-emotions healing, so Kristi provides a Perspective Reboot® group healing segment. The overall focus was on releasing fear from lack of control (e.g., fear of ticks). Adapt this for YOUR fear. You can visit Kristi at www.PerspectiveReboot.com. In Episode 3, the hosts explore illness anxiety, which is a condition marked by preoccupation with acquiring a serious illness as well as hypersensitivity to physical sensations which are interpreted as indicative of an underlying illness. The relationship between illness anxiety and fear of death and dying is explored, as well as how embodiment—our relationship to our bodies and our experiences of being a body—helps us deal with illness anxiety.

The fear of death is real and present in many of our lives. Understanding the power of Jesus over death helps us overcome it.
In this episode, Whitney Woods opens up about her childhood and what it was like to have a brother diagnosed with cancer at a young age. Years later, Whitney found herself in her own battle with severe illness. Whitney tells the story of how she found out she was sick, and the research it took on her behalf to figure out what she needed to do to survive. In 2012, at just 26 years old, Whitney went through a 14 hour surgery to remove a vital organ and reroute her entire internal system-- a total pancreatectomy with an auto islet cell transplant. During the months leading up to this big procedure, there was a lot of discomfort not only physically but mentally. You see, Whitney always wanted to be a wife and mom, but she didn't know if that day would ever come. She talks about what it was like to not be able to walk, eat, go out with friends, or drive a car because of all the medications she had to take. She begged God for her life and told Him all of her desires, which ultimately came true, but not without its own set of complications in IVF and pregnancy. Whitney's positivity, hope for the future, and the impact of the support from her family and friends are all definitely heard throughout this entire episode and sure to leave you inspired!
