Was Liquid Death "Death Dust" a Big Mistake? | Beverage Identity Crisis

the Joshua Schall Audio Experience

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2024 13:44

Does it matter that Liquid Death “swung on and missed” its first attempt at extending its platform beyond the ready-to-drink beverage category? If you checked out my “beverage identity crisis” content from last week, I had originally intended to include these Liquid Death format expansion insights in that piece. But there was a bit too much strategic nuance that I believed would create confusion with the previous content's central focus. So, instead…I figured I'd give this important recent Liquid Death business activity its own content…because there's honestly a lot to unpack (learnings wise) that I believe can be valuable to my community of CPG industry leaders. In typical Liquid Death fashion, the beverage brand shared an entertaining video in mid-February 2024 to promote it had created a new powdered electrolyte hydration supplement drink mix. Death Dust comes in three flavor variants, each were formulated with the approach of them being lightly and naturally sweetened and flavored. Liquid Death also leveraged known flavor IP from its flavored sparking water SKUs. The Death Dust powdered hydration supplement stick packs were launched on Amazon (and direct-to-consumer) only. From a marketplace perspective, dollar sales for sports drink mixes were up 53% YoY for the last 52-week period ending 3/26/24. So, that's obviously an attractive adjacent category for a beverage brand with the “platform strategy friendly” tagline of “Murder your thirst.” And even though the billion-dollar sports hydration powder market is filled with heavy hitter brands owned by the likes of Unilever, PepsiCo, The Coca-Cola Company, and KDP…the unit economics of these products in terms of categorical gross margins (but especially net margins) are still quite desirable to Liquid Death. Now…for those pundits (that spewed hate when Death Dust launched), talking about Liquid Death profitability struggles and how this was a “Hail Mary” type move to save the company, come on guys let's be real here! Liquid Death has only been around since 2019…achieving triple-digit growth for three consecutive years and generating $263 million in retail sales last year. It's in over 120K retail locations and has become the fastest-growing brand in the water, flavored sparkling water, and tea categories. Liquid Death can pull that feat off because of its ability to achieve the rare feat of successfully building a truly distinct and memorable brand. Within the CPG industry, you'll hear A LOT of entrepreneurs say, “our CPG brand this or that.” But few ever get past being simply a company that attempts to sell undifferentiated products. Yet, when you can sell a product that also brings someone an extremely desirable emotion like belonging/connection or status…you've done something special. But this isn't just another one of those “I love the Liquid Death brand strategy” pieces of content…you've heard that story too many times already. Instead, I wanted to analyze nuanced strategic aspects about the Liquid Death “beverage identity crisis," which include the...CPG industry innovation paradox, double-edged sword effect of using known flavor systems, utilizing “lean startup” ideologies, leveraging the beautiful, underappreciated value of an online marketplace like Amazon. Liquid Death might not think “Death Dust” was a big swing, and by categorical size it wasn't, but we are still talking about a relatively young CPG brand that missed on its first format (and I'd argue functional beverage) expansion. What's the episode about? In this episode, hear author and vocal coach Clare Hogan discuss death anxiety, breath work, transpersonal psychology, performing death, death cafes and seeing death as an adventure and gateway to more life.   Who is Clare? After completing her GMus at the Royal Northern College of Music, Clare went on to do a Masters by Research at Keele University.  It was there that she discovered an interest in psychology.   Whilst still researching for her MA, Clare started tutoring at Keele and later at Salford University. Clare devised and has run the Master's course 'Psychology of Performance' at Salford for over 20 years. Clare is an expert in classical and operatic technique and has a keen interest in helping those suffering from anxiety and/or stage-fright.   Her latest book, Performance and Purpose in Death and Dying, was written over three years in response to the growing need for a sense of purpose in the wake of so much destruction and devastation, with the aim of communicating the message that there is no death as we commonly perceive it, and there is nothing to fear.   It developed and grew from the courses, classes and the Death Cafes that Clare has delivered and facilitated. The Alchemy of Performance Anxiety: Transformation for Artists was published in 2018, also by Free Association Books. How do I cite the episode in my research and reading lists? The existential fear of moving through life stages (our generation are now the adults). This topic was recommended by a friend. [ChatGPT Content]: The Millennial generation, also known as Generation Y, is the demographic cohort following Generation X. They are typically defined as those born between 1981 and 1996, although the exact years can vary depending on the source. This generation is often characterized by their use of technology and social media, as well as their tendency to delay traditional milestones such as marriage and homeownership. One of the defining characteristics of the Millennial generation is their existential fear of moving through life stages. This fear can manifest itself in various ways, such as a fear of commitment, a fear of failure, and a fear of not being able to live up to societal expectations. 1. Fear of Commitment: Many Millennials struggle with committing to long-term relationships, whether it be romantic partnerships or professional careers. They may fear being trapped in a situation that they can't escape from, or they may fear the uncertainty that comes with committing to something for the long-term. 2. Fear of Failure: Another common fear among Millennials is the fear of failure. This can manifest itself in a variety of ways, such as a fear of not being able to achieve one's goals, a fear of not being able to live up to societal expectations, or a fear of not being able to provide for oneself or one's family. 3. Fear of Not Being Able to Live Up to Societal Expectations: Many Millennials feel pressure to live up to societal expectations, such as achieving a successful career, owning a home, and starting a family. This pressure can lead to a fear of not being able to meet these expectations, which can be a source of anxiety and stress. 4. Fear of Financial Instability: Financial instability is a common fear among Millennials, as they have come of age during a period of economic uncertainty. Many Millennials are facing high levels of student loan debt, underemployment, and a lack of job security. This can lead to a fear of not being able to provide for oneself or one's family. 5. Fear of Social Isolation: Social isolation is a growing concern among Millennials, as they are often more connected to each other through technology than they are in person. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and a fear of not being able to form meaningful connections with others. 6. Fear of Political Instability: Political instability is a growing concern among Millennials, as they have come of age during a period of increased political polarization and division. This can lead to a fear of not being able to have a meaningful impact on the world, or a fear of not being able to trust in the political system. 7. Fear of Environmental Instability: Environmental instability is a growing concern among Millennials, as they have come of age during a period of increased awareness of climate change and other environmental issues. This can lead to a fear of not being able to have a positive impact on the world, or a fear of not being able to secure a safe and sustainable future for oneself and one's family. 8. Fear of Technological Advancements: Technological advancements are happening at a rapid pace, and many Millennials fear not being able to keep up with these changes. This can lead to a fear of not being able to adapt to new technologies, or a fear of not being able to find a job that utilizes one's skills. 9. Fear of Aging: Aging is a natural part of life, but many Millennials fear not being able to enjoy their later years. This can lead to a fear of not being able to maintain one's health, or a fear of not being able to find fulfillment in one's later years. 10. Fear of Death: Death is a natural part of life, but many Millennials fear not being able to make [ChatGPT Prompt: Write a 3500 word article on the Millennial generation and 10 topics related to existential fear of moving through life stages].

"A world without heroes is like world without sun. You can't look up to anyone..." The words of KISS were never more true than at the beginning of a cold December in 1992 and ending in January of 1993. The doors outside of comic shops were lined with mourners on that comic book Wednesday. The Man of Tomorrow, The Last Son of Krypton, The Metropolis Kid, The Man of Steel - Superman was dead. Fans wept as they reached for the black polybagged issue, eager to see how our greatest hero could possibly leave us. Major news outlets across the world reported on how Earth's Mightiest Champion was finally and tragically meeting his demise. It was news that rocked the comic world, the fans of Big Blue and the entire planet. Now 30 years later we look back on story that was arguably one of the greatest Superman stories ever told. Also we look at how our hosts , Double A and CM, faced up against possibly their first major collectible event as comic book collectors and fans. We did it, folks- we've circumnavigated extreme metal itself. On the 94th installment of the only podcast that matters we return to a band featured in our very first episode. Please do not go back and listen- those were dark days- but aside from this exception, we have an episode of... primitive death metal? Today's intro review comes courtesy of Oregon-based deathrashers Phenom whose second full-length brings to mind the barbaric and primordial sounds of Master mixed with streaks of Brazilian and Teutonic thrash. Definitely a weird one, but also excellent- recommended for all sorts of extreme metal fiends regardless of genre preference. What better way to follow up that opening barrage with the return of legendary cheeseheads Jungle Rot? TDMG brought this on the show not expecting too many surprises, but quickly realized something highly unusual was afoot here. Jungle Rot's style shines through (as always) but with a tremendous helping of thrash and hardcore. Could this be the world's heaviest crossover record? But what's with the convoluted, nested riffing structures? And what the hell is going on with all the solos? A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. And finally we get back to the point of origin- the newest Horn album, bringing us all the way back to Terminus Episode 1. The world's greatest (and perhaps only) purveyor of Alpine Black Folk, Horn's new record provokes some excellent discussion- the different "modes" found within single projects and the power of iterative melodic refinement. This is an expansive record, ranging from oi-infused folkblack rippers to elegiac doom works, so there's something for everyone- but where does the strongest material lie? 0:00:00 - Intro/Phenom - Ov History and Death (Death is Imminent Records) 0:26:29 - Jungle Rot - A Call to Arms (Unique Leader Records) 1:11:18 - Interlude - Murder Squad - “Bloodfreak” fr. Unsane, Insane and Mentally Deranged (Pavement Music, 2001) 1:14:15 - Horn - Verzet (Independent) 1:54:54 - Outro - Liederjan - “Schitter Tod,” fr. Volksmusik Aus Der Heilen Welt (Polydor, 1979) and “Die Weber,” fr. Mädchen, Meister, Mönche (Polydor, 1978). The first of these is a version of “Es ist ein Schnitter, a 17c German folk song that inspires Horn. This is one part in a series of episodes on "The Untethered Soul". Part 12: Reflect on Death - Death is the best teacher, embrace it. - It puts things in perspective (big picture) - Why bother with small grudges? - Scarcity makes life precious - A dying person would envy your present. Would envy your normalcy - Death shows that everything can be changed in an instant. It is a promise that all good or bad will come to an end - Death can come at any moment. At any moment, what you’re doing right now is how someone died. - Live life like every moment is the last b/c it very well could be - How are you living right now? Is that how you want to live? What priorities, thoughts, actions would change? - There’s no warning for death. You had all that time. Don’t ask for an extension. Why didn’t you use the time you were already given wisely? - You can’t change life, only how you live your life - The ultimate gift from life is the growth from experiencing it. Willingness to experience life events is what gives life meaning - Don’t be mistaken, doesn’t mean YOLO recklessness. Your desire to get special experiences is just you making up for missing out on life’s regular special moments. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

"Capitalism and class society lead to inequality, instrumentalist thinking, unhappiness and loneliness. Capitalism makes people unhappy, and in some ways drives them mad. Violence in the form of crime, including murder is unavoidable within capitalism". We have, so far, been dealing with relatively abstract and idealist philosophical ideas, on their own. For our next pair of episodes, however, we will be looking at material realities and how (possibly absurd) concepts like death fit into a capitalist framework, using Christian Fuchs' Death and Love: The Metaphysics of Communication. With excerpts from thinkers like Thomas Nagel, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre and Karl Marx, this chapter (part of a larger book titled "Communication and Capitalism: A Critical Theory") raises (uncomfortable) questions about the nature of human relationships and the role of socialism in combating the phenomenon of death. Considering the length and density of the discussion, the episode has been divided into sections according to the structure of the essay itself, the timestamps to which are below: Part 1: 7:10 Part 2: 17:40 Part 3: 57:10 We hope you enjoy this one; it was a satisfyingly tough nut to crack. "The only hopeful counterpart to death is love as the principle of human sympathy and as the social principle of socialism". ELEVEN RARE STAMPS = DEATH IN SIX FIGURES... Jonathan Knox was an auctioneer of somewhat dubious repute with a photographic memory. So when a frightened woman offered him a discount on eleven of the rarest stamps in existence, worth something like $500,000, he became suspicious. He figured also that if the stamps had been stolen he might net a pretty reward by returning them to their rightful owner. But he couldn't find a single collector willing to admit to owning them. And when the girl who had originally offered them was murdered, Knox knew that he'd be the next one canceled unless he could find the person who would pay the growing postage-due bill from the devil's own mail carrier. That's when the auctioneer found himself forced to play very reluctant sleuth, with his own life as the stakes. In this colorful, never-reprinted 1950s classic you will encounter: Jonathan Knox: This auctioneer's photographic memory coupled with his lack of scruples made him a detested necessity to many people. And, too often, it also marked him for murder. Elly Watson: She was better at bargaining than Knox. But when she gave him a bargain - it was more than he bargained for. Edmund Dorsey deLong: Like many philatelists, he would stop at nothing for his stamp collection. Not even a killing. Henrietta Noyes: They had to kill her to break her hold on them. So they targeted her for murder. Louis Plummer: His customers were interested in his goods, but not where they came from. This case was the exception. Everett Kirkland: He should never have been an actor - too many people had seen his face. That could make it unhealthy for a man involved in murder. "Fresh background material and a fine storytelling knack." (Lewisville Courier-Journal) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Suffering: Why do Christians struggle to accept that suffering is part of the normal Christian life? Death: Death is a breaking process in us as we die to our own desires and allow Christ to be formed in us. The Christian life is an exchange - you die to your old life in order for a newness of life (Christ’s life) to take hold of you. Resurrection: Resurrection life is the product of death, there can be no life without death. Our eyes must always be on the end product, we suffer and die in order to receive His Life.   One of the tasks assigned to physicians, and certainly not a task one thinks of when entering medical school, is to verify death. The first time you declare someone dead - for me, it was as a first year resident in the ICU - is a weird feeling because of the finality of it. As with anything you do as a physician for the first time there is some uncertainty that you aren't "messing up." But you don't need to be a doctor to declare someone dead because anyone can tell when someone or something is dead, right?   However, what happens when they are breathing on a machine, being fed by a tube, and receiving medicines by IV? Are they dead? Unconscious? Can the rest of the body be alive while just the brain isn't? Is brain death declared at the bedside really a way of being dead despite the rest of the body continuing on?   My guest, Dr. Alan Shewmon, is a professor emeritus in pediatric neurology who spent his career evaluating brain and neurological disorders. You can find a lot of his work online and much of it now has to do with whether brain death (as we traditionally think of it as declaring someone dead because of a loss of brain function) can be a separate definition of death. He presents a number of extraordinary clinical cases which challenge the reasons most physicians feel comfortable declaring death without the cellular death of the patient's other organs.   Aside from being an interesting philosophical or bioethical discussion, there are practical considerations for not being able to declare patients brain dead. Primarily, the solid organ transplantation specialty would be dramatically scaled back and the number of patients needing transplants would increase. Also, the ability of hospitals to stop life saving interventions, i.e. life support, for "hopeless cases" would be made more difficult legally.    Dr. Alan Shewmon is Professor Emeritus in Pediatrics & Neurology at UCLA. He has publicly questioned whether we can die twice - whether there is truly a brain death that should count as the death of the patient while the rest of their body may be viable.   show notes The Curious Case of Jahi McMath- Dr. Shewmon's discussion and evidence from his review of the case of the young girl. His discussion begins at the 41:35 mark. What Does it Mean to Die? An article from the New Yorker regarding the case of Jahi. Episode 017:  The practice of forced organ harvesting in China where they don't bother to determine whether someone has an irreversible loss of brain function - they execute the donors.
