Dr. T and Truth Fairy are delighted to welcome a very special guest to the show in this episode. Rachel Harris, PhD, the author of Swimming in the Sacred, joins them for an intimate conversation about what led her to write the book and what it contains. She details how wise women are largely left out of the larger conversation on psychedelic potential and shares knowledge from the women guides she talked with who had never been interviewed before.One of the points Rachel makes is that the women guides are not therapists and do not refer to themselves as therapists. They will refer to therapists outside themselves. We tend to be the ones who have conflated psychedelic guides with therapists. Rachel talks about how long traditional indigenously trained shamans will be considered apprentices and some of the ceremonies around the work they do. Rachel's own experiences touch on many ancient wisdoms and draw from years of study and research beyond physical work with medicines and awareness.Rachel describes lifelong learning and an unending search through experiences, a continuous exploration of self and spirituality, of being alive in the work of medicine. She expresses the need to talk about not exactly adverse experiences but about the reality of what can be experienced, of the truths of the challenges the medicine presents. During a decade working in research, Rachel received a National Institutes of Health New Investigator's Award and published more than forty scientific studies in peer-reviewed journals. She has also consulted with Fortune 500 companies. Rachel was in the 1968 Esalen Residential Program, Big Sur, CA. This intensive six-month program focused on meditation and bodywork. In the early 1970s, Rachel studied with Dorothy Nolte in the movement system, Structural Awareness, based on Dr. Ida Rolf's Structural Integration (Rolfing). Rachel also co-edited the Journal of the American Dance Therapy Association for three years. Awareness of how people live and move in their bodies has always been an aspect of Rachel's approach to psychotherapy.In 2005 Rachel traveled to a retreat center in Costa Rica and serendipitously found herself with the opportunity to drink ayahuasca with Ecuadorian shamans. Brad Daw is an former bishop of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints and current advocate for plant medicines. Brad shares his experience with magic mushrooms. Jamie shares a fascinating story about traveling to the Peruvian jungle to take part in an Ayahuasca Ceremony to help him heal from his childhood trauma. The experience helps him to get sober and be the Dad that he wants to be and he's now the father of two 3 year old twin boys. It's an incredible story about death of ego and meeting the higher power of love which leads Jamie to purge addiction and substance abuse. A wild ride! Inspired by his Mother and Grandmother, Jamie has been cooking from an early age. As a Dad he has high standards when it comes to the family diet with 'low gluten' and no processed sugar. We both reflect on related behaviour of children after eating sugary foods...and a couple of ideas on how to deal with Halloween. Jamie is also very positive about embracing the process that his family is currently going through with assessments to see if his boys are on the autism spectrum.

What if someone told you that feeling the worst feeling and pain every was actually one of the most rewarding experiences of their life? In this episode, Nicole opens up about her Ayahuasca Ceremony Experience. It starts with Rapé, which in short is used to reach a greater level of consciousness. It is powdered tobacco plant blown through the nostrils. The feeling is as unpleasant as it sounds.  After that settles in, the Ayahuasca is consumed. Ayahuasca is a ceremonial tea made from an Amazonian plant, quite bitter in taste, which is prepared by a shaman. The word comes from two Quechuan Indian words: “aya” meaning spirit, ancestor, and “huasca” meaning vine, together it means “the vine of the soul”. It is important to note that the ceremony is as important as the plant itself. In Nicole's experience, she was in the ceremony led by a shaman and a psychologist to guide her through the process. Nicole talks about the joy of realizing that such pure love exists in the world because of what she experienced, how angry she didn't realize her inner child is, and how scary but enlightening it is to know there is a lot of work to do, but without these revelations she may have never found herself in the position to confront certain things. Ayahuasca is not for everyone, and you should do your own research whether or not it is something you want to consider. Different people react differently and have different experiences. Today's episode I share my first experience drinking Ayahuasca. It's hard to put into words the significance of the experience, how much it has impacted me in the days after or to communicate the sequence of events in a way that makes sense to the listener. I do my best to tell it as I remember it and not hold anything back.
