It helps make it stand out and will support booking of upcoming guests.'Episode NotesKnown in the yoga world as THE teachers' teacher, Annie Carpenter (@anniecarpentersmartflow) shares her story with Anne, who has been an avid student, first via online platform Glo.com, before attending live Zoom classes and IRL workshops with her in 2022. Annie's journey starts in Virginia, but she tells Anne how she found her path early on with dance, leading her to the Martha Graham company and New York City. From getting a scholarship to working at the junior company and briefly joining the main company, Annie found a calling in what she refers to as authentic self-movement and in teaching at the Martha Graham Center. An introvert, she shares with Anne how yoga became an essential part of her life, thanks to Integral yoga (Swami Satchidananda's school) which felt like a refuge from the competitiveness of the dance world.Annie explains how after a trip to LA and a conversation with her teacher Maty Ezraty, she impulsively relocated to the West Coast and turned to teaching yoga full time, training at Yoga Works under Maty and Lisa Walford. They go on to talk about teaching, about Annie's movement principles and energy, how to create inspiration for students, and why Annie founded her own yoga school, Smart Flow Yoga. Annie also shares why continuing to evolve is essential, as well as learning to let go of preconceived notions. She explains how she has learnt to tap into her students' expectations rather than relying on her own. Now based in Northern California, the teacher, who turned 65 this year, also talks about the stages of life, or ashrams, and she is learning to ‘retire' whatever is not supportive in her practice. Quoting Noam Chomsky, she says: "If you are teaching today what you were teaching five years ago, either your field is dead, or you are.” Annie also reveals her passion for bird-watching, her mindfulness and pranayama practices, and how learning to be still was the doorway to her meditation practice. Finally, she answers the most delicate and profound question of all, one that Annie regularly asks her students: who is Annie? A joyous, profoundly thoughtful and inspiring interview. For the 29th episode, I have invited Meytal Blanaru - a dancer, choreographer, teacher and a Feldenkreis practitioner. She is the founder of Fathom High - a Feldenkrais® based dance technique, that uses neuroplasticity to create changes in the way one moves, forms habits and overcome limitations. I met Meytal many years ago during my dance education and recently we worked closely for several months in which I have assisted her with the creation of her new website. Her work attracted me as I have seen in it a cross over between what I would called ‘somatic training' and ‘athletic expression' and I was interested to dive deeper into it. In our conversation we talk lengthly on the subject of attention as material, We talked about resiliency and the different between the mental aspects and the image we might have about physical resiliency. We talk about freedom of movement and limitations. How can we locate limitations and over come limitations. Connect to Meytal: https://meytal-blanaru.com Subscribe to get the podcast to your email: https://movementlab.eu/subscribe The podcast was recorded using riverside.fm - remote recording in studio quality: http://www.riverside.fm?via=matan

Today's guest and my very first guest on the Thriving singer podcast is non-other than the great David Jones, who has developed an international career as an author, vocal pedagogue, teacher of singers, and teachers in Europe and the U.S. David is celebrating 50 successful years of teaching the fall of 2022 He has trained singers performing at opera houses and festivals such as the New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Berlin Staatsoper, Vienna Staatsoper, Opera North U.K. the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, Salzburg Festival, and L'Opera Bastille in Paris. David Jones is a graduate of Texas Christian University with graduate research at the University of North Texas. Having also researched at the Groningen University Hospital (Groningen, The Netherlands) and the Laboratoire de la Voix Voice Clinic in Paris, he has had the opportunity to study how Old World concepts can be therapeutic in treating voice disorders. He also works in conjunction with the practice of Laryngologist Dr. Benjamin Asher in New York. In 1979, he studied with internationally known vocal pedagogue Allan R. Lindquest (1891-1984), founding member of NATS and the Amercian Academy of Teachers of Singing. It was through Mr. Jones' study with Lindquest that he learned the concepts of Lindquest's teachers, which included Enrico Caruso, Mme. Ingebjard-Isene (teacher of Flagstad), Joseph Hislop, Maestro Rosati (teacher of Gigli), and Mme. Novikova. Additional instructors of the Lindquest concepts with whom David Jones studied include Virginia Botkin, Dr. Suzanne Hickman, and Dr. Barbara Mathis, who performed scientific research on the therapeutic benefits of the exercises. It was through this study that Mr. Jones studied the concepts of the Swedish-Italian School of singing. In 1982, Mr. Jones studied with Dixie Neill, the primary teacher of Ben Hepner, and later with Dr. Evelyn Reynolds. Dr. Reynold's teachers included Lola Fletcher (student of Herbert Witherspoon), tenor Hollis Arment, William Vennard, author of “Singing: The Mechanism and the Technique”, and Ralph Erolle, instructor of the well-known soprano Arleen Auger. David Jones has trained singers performing at such opera houses and festivals as the New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Berlin Staatsoper, Vienna Staatsoper, Opera North U.K. the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, Salzburg Festival, and L'Opera Bastille in Paris. Mr. Jones has been published by both European NATS and Classical Singer Magazine. Presenting seminars for teachers twice yearly in New York City and in Europe, he now dedicates his energy toward sharing information with teachers, writing articles, and teaching in his New York Studio and in Europe. In our interview we travel far and wide, exploring how he got into the world of singing and how he gathered and refined the concepts he now teaches. We talk about vocal trauma and what causes it, the importance of sensations in singing, diagnosing Fach, and what a voice type consists of. We talk about collaborative teaching, and problem-solving together with the student, making them aware of the process. We dive into the realm of feeling safe in a voice lesson and what not to put up with. How some teachers might be qualified in their information but not in the psychology of teaching. Connecting mind and body through work such as Feldenkreis or Alexander Technique and the importance of identifying and releasing tension whatever the cause may be. And last but not least how to work with different coaches while keeping your technique. And many other things connected to healthy singing. Many of you know my long history of injuries and surgeries. More than 20 years ago, I had worked with a Feldenkreis practitioner who had noticed that I have a strong tendency to rotate onto the outsides of my feet (which unfortunately is still my tendency today), and favor my left knee due to the four surgeries I'd had to repair its ruptured quad tendon. Therefore, on the supposition that some of these subsequent issues might also be related to my biomechanics and running form, several years back I sought out Douglas Wisoff of Radiant Running in Lafayette, Colorado. Douglas was a strong trail runner in his earlier days, and has dedicated himself to helping runners improve their training and results. I am constantly reminding myself during my runs of the techniques he drilled into me, and I in turn share some of those with the athletes I coach. Douglas happened to be at the American Heroes Run where one of the athletes he coaches, Karen Kay, was running, so we decided to get together to chat. Hopefully there are some tips and ideas in this conversation that will be beneficial to your running. And if you feel this sort of work will help you run better and more injury-free, perhaps this will motivate you to look up a form coach in your community, or give Douglas a call because he can coach you remotely as well. As he says here, it often only takes a few sessions. Funny thing, just prior to Douglas and I recording this, we discovered that we are both from the same town, Huntington, Long Island, New York, and we didn't even know that about each other before! A once-small whaling village where back in the day at the bar at Finnegan's you could buy a beer when you were 16 years old without raising an eyebrow, order a hamburger at the Hamburger Choo Choo that would get delivered to your seat on an actual model train, and get slices of pizza at a joint called Village Pizza at 2 a.m. or later. I hope you enjoy joining us for this fun and educational chat!Douglas Wisoff303-499-2062douglas@radiantrunning.comwww.radiantrunning.comFacebook @radiantrunning Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
